The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that a quart of oil each was added each week. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the charcoal canister needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, no additional assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Rav4. The contact noticed that his vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil upon inspection. The contact stated that he had to add two quarts of oil to the engine every five weeks. The contact went to a dealer where he purchased a PCV valve and a hose connection; the contact's neighbor performed the work on the vehicle. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
Excessive oil consumption. Oil checked religiously every Friday. (Added 1-1.5 quarts weekly 500-700 miles). Vehicle owned 21 months. Oil checked and added on Friday 10/08, Saturday 10/09 Engine failed, no oil on dipstick and motor has a grinding sound.
this is a follow up email regarding my car 2007 toyota rav 4 FWD 4 cylinder ; oil consumption of this model is too much 1 quart every 250 - 300 miles. Toyota already know and acknowledge the problem but with my case when I went to the dealer they just told me that it passed the test. If NHTSA will help us voice our concern maybe toyota will consider this to become a recall

VEHICLE CONSUMES HIGH AMOUNTS OF OIL. I DRIVE THE VEHICLE AROUND 300 MILES PER WEEK IT CONSUMES AROUND A QUART AND A HALF. ALSO THE ENGINE IS LOSING COMPRESSION. ALSO THE ENGINE IS LOSING COMPRESSION
THIS CAR BURNS ENGINE OIL DRAMATICALLY. I DID MY OIL CHANGE AT JIFFY LUBE AND I HALF WAY THRU TO THE NEXT OIL CHANGE THE MAINTENANCE REQUIRED LIGHT CAME AND WHEN I TOOK IT BACK TO THEM THEY HAD TO ADD ALMOST 2 QUARTS OF OIL. I THINK THAT'S UNACCEPTABLE. THERE ARE NO OIL LEAKS AND THIS IS HAPPENING EVERY TIME WE CHANGE OIL. WE GOT THE VEHICLE IN FEB 2019
SIGNIFICANT BURNING OF ENGINE OIL, ALMOST NOTHING APPEAR ON THE DEEP STICK WHEN I CHECK IT, NO LEAKED OR WHAT SO EVER FROM TOP TO BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE.
TOYOTA USES A SOY FOOD BASED PRODUCT IN THE INSULATION OF THE ENGINE WIRING. APPARENTLY IT ATTRACTS MICE THAT CHEW ON THE WIRING. THIS CAUSED THE ENGINE TO START MISFIRING FROM THE DAMAGE AND EVENTUALLY STOPPED RUNNING. THIS WAS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD TO THE OCCUPANTS. THE DAMAGE COST ME $1,000 TO REPAIR. THESE CRUCIAL WIRES SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN MADE FROM A PRODUCT THAT IS FOOD FOR MICE. I UNDERSTAND FROM THE TOYOTA SERVICE MANAGER THAT THIS IS NOW A COMMON PROBLEM. MY CAR WAS ON A CITY STREET WHEN IT STALLED OUT. HOWEVER, MOST MILES ARE ON FREEWAYS.
MY VEHICLE HAVE A SEVERE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE, IT BURNS OIL AT A RATE OF 1 QUART PER 250-500 MILES. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WAS A TSB ISSUED IN 2016 BY MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS EVEN THOUGH IT FIT THE MODEL YEARS OF THE BULLETIN. *TR
2.4 LITER ENGINE HAD BEEN BURNING 1 QUART OF OIL EACH 800 TO 1000 MILES, AND HAS STEADILY GOTTEN WORSE. NOW WITH 192,000 A NICE CAR OTHERWISE HAS BEEN BURNING 1 1/2 TO 2 QUARTS EVERY 800 TO 1000 MILES. THIS HAS ADVERSELY EFFECTED SPARK PLUGS, OXYGEN SENSORS AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER. TOYOYTA TEST THE CAR IN 2016 BUT DEEMED THE PROBLEM AS ACCEPTABLE, BUT THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW WITH THE PISTONS AND RINGS, WHICH THEY HAVE SINCE ADMITTED IS A DESIGN FLAW. THESE ENGINES SHOULD BE RECALLED AND THE DESIGN FLAW CORRECTED.
IN 2015 OR 2016 TOYOTA SENT ME A LETTER TELLING ME TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR A CHECK UP BECAUSE IT WAS BURNING OIL BUT THAT LETTER HAD AN EXPIRATION DATE WHICH DID NOT REALIZE I THOUGHT IT WAS A RECALL SO I TOOK THE CAR TO CHECK AND THEY STARTED A PROCESS THE CAR FAILED ALL THE TESTS THAT THEY DID AND BY THE END THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY COULDN'T FIX IT BECAUSE THE LETTER HAD EXPIRED. WHICH THAT IS NOT RIGHT FOR ME WHAT I NEED FROM TOYOTA IS IF THEY CAN OPEN THAT PROGRAM ONE MORE TIME SO THEY CAN FIX MY CAR BECAUSE IT IS BURNING A LOT OF OIL AND IT HARDLY HAS 50,000 MILES

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CROWN TOYOTA OF LAWRENCE (3430 IOWA ST, LAWRENCE, KS 66046) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE PISTON RODS FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 148,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 1909110525. NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 108,267.
TOYOTA PERFORMED AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST ON MY RAV4 "FOLLOWING TOYOTA POL14-12". TO QUOTE THE SERVICE CENTER REPRESENTATIVE, IT "FAILED THE TEST MISERABLY". THE OIL WAS REPORTEDLY DRY AFTER LESS THAN 1200 MILES. NO MAINTENANCE LIGHT APPEARED. TOYOTA HAD A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT FOR THIS ISSUE. THE CAR IS WELL UNDER THE MILEAGE LIMIT, BUT THE TIME HAS EXPIRED. THE COST TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS $4897.79 PLUS TAX. I CALLED TOYOTA AT 800-331-4331 AS SUGGESTED BY THE SERVICE CENTER REPRESENTATIVE TO REPORT THE PROBLEM AND INQUIRE ABOUT ASSISTANCE. TOYOTA CORPORATE REFUSED TO PROVIDE FURTHER ASSISTANCE.

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THAT SAME PART WAS REPLACED THREE YEARS AGO. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 158,000. *TR*JB
THE VEHICLE BURN EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL. ANY DRIVING FOR MORE THAN TWO HOURS WILL LEAD THE VEHICLE TO BE EMPTY OF OIL. THIS EXCESSIVE OIL BURNING HAPPENS QUICKLY OVER HIGHWAY AND SLOWLY DRIVING CITY.

EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION MAY LEAD TO ENGINE FAILURE
MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4, 113,000 MILES, IS EXPERIENCING SERIOUS EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. TOYOTA FIRST ACKNOWLEDGED THIS VEHICLE HAD AN EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM IN 2011 WHEN IT ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (T-SB-0094-11) . I TOOK THE CAR IN TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND IT WAS SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED. IN 2014, TOYOTA WAS THEN THE SUBJECT OF A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT BY TOYOTA OWNERS WHO ALLEGED CONTINUING PROBLEMS WITH EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. TOYOTA ENTERED INTO A SETTLEMENT. IN 2015, TOYOTA OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY REPAIRS. I TOOK MY CAR IN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND IT WAS SUPPOSEDLY "REPAIRED." IN RECENT MONTHS, THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN MUCH WORSE. AT ONE POINT, I HEARD ODD ENGINE NOISES. I WAS ALARMED TO SEE THE OIL LEVEL WAS SO LOW THAT IT DIDN'T REGISTER, DESPITE THE FACT I HAD GOTTEN AN OIL CHANGE A FEW WEEKS EARLIER. I CALLED TOYOTA ON 9/10/2018 AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING TO FIX THE CAR THAT TOYOTA TWICE FAILED TO FIX. TO NO AVAIL, I TOLD ANGIE, AT TOYOTA'S NATIONAL CONSUMER AFFAIRS DIVISION, THAT. TOYOTA'S SUPPOSED "FIXES" WERE INSUFFICIENT AND DID NOT WORK. SHE SAID THAT'S MY PROBLEM. AS A RESULT, I HAVE A CAR THAT IS UNSAFE. DESPITE FREQUENT OIL CHANGES, THE ENGINE CAN RUN OUT OF OIL AND SEIZE UP AT ANY TIME, LEAVING ME (A 67-YEAR-OLD WOMAN) STRANDED IN THE DESERT IN 120 DEGREE TEMPERATURES OR ON THE ROADWAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION HAS BEEN A COMMON COMPLAINT AMONG OWNERS OF THE OWNERS OF 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4 VEHICLE FOR YEARS. TOYOTA CLEARLY HAS FAILED TO DO WHAT IT ADMITS IT WAS OBLIGATED TO DO AND PROMISED TO DO - FIX IT. WHY HASN'T THE GOVERNMENT ALREADY STEPPED IN TO REQUIRE TOYOTA TO IMMEDIATELY REPAIR THE AFFECTED VEHICLES? INDIVIDUAL CONSUMERS HAVE NO POWER TO MAKE MULTI-NATIONAL CORPORATIONS RESPECT THEIR RIGHTS AND THE LAW.
ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION ON THIS VEHICLE IS UNACCEPTED, TOYOTA KNEW THIS PROBLEMS AND SHOULD MAKE A RECALL YEARS AGO ABOUT THIS ISSUE
MY TOYOTA RAV4 (2007) STARTED SHOWING SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE OIL COMBUSTION. I STARTED HAVING OIL CHANGES EVERY 2-3K MILES. 1200 MILES AFTER MY LAST OIL CHANGE THE ENGINE SEIZED DUE TO A LACK OF OIL. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AT A CONVENIENCE STORE WHEN IT DIED. I'VE SINCE LEARNED THAT THE ISSUE IS KNOWN AND THEIR IS A TSB THAT WAS ISSUED TO DEALERSHIPS.
ON JULY 24, 2018; I CONTACTED TEMECULA VALLEY TOYOTA REGARDING MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4 WITH 122,00 MILES ON IT. I CONTACTED THEM TO SPEAK REGARDING THE EXCESSIVE USE OF OIL THAT MY VEHICLE WAS RECENTLY USING. I HAVE BEEN DILIGENT ABOUT BRINGING MY CAR IN FOR ALL RECALLS AND HAVE INQUIRED EACH TIME IF THERE WAS ANYTHING THAT SHOULD BE FIXED UNDER WARRANTY OR RECALL THAT NEEDED TO BE ADDRESSED ON MY VEHICLE. BEFORE CONTACTING TOYOTA, I LOOKED ONLINE TO SEE IF ANY OTHER VEHICLES WERE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM. I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A LAWSUIT FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE. IT WAS TITLED THE ECONOMIC LOSS CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT. IT READS THAT TOYOTA RAV 4 WITH THE YEARS 2006-2008 RAV 4 SHOULD BE ENTITLED TO BE REPAIRED IF THEY ARE BROUGHT IN FOR REPAIR WITHIN 10 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES. IT DOES NOT STATE WHICHEVER IS LESS. HOWEVER TOYOTA IS IMPLYING BECAUSE MY CAR IS OVER 10 YEARS OLD THAT THIS IS NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. AS STATES PREVIOUSLY, MY VEHICLE HAS 122,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS UNDER THE AMOUNT REQUIRED FOR THE LAWSUIT. IN ADDITION I HAVE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN BEFORE THE 10 YEAR WARRANTY EXPIRED AND IT WAS NEVER MENTIONED TO ME THAT THIS COULD BE COVERED AT THE TIME OF REPAIR FOR OTHER RECALLS. I WAS BRINGING THIS VEHICLE IN TO BE REPAIRED PRIOR TO A FAMILY EMERGENCY THAT I WOULD HAVE TO USE MY VEHICLE TO DRIVE THROUGH SEVERAL STATES. THE VEHICLE HAD AN OIL CHANGE BEFORE I LEFT. MY VEHICLE USED UP ALL OF THE OIL BEFORE I MADE IT HALF WAY. THE PRESSURE IN THE ENGINE WAS SO HOT THAT IT BLEW THE OIL CAP OFF AND NEARLY BLEW UP MY ENGINE AND THE OIL LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. THIS OCCURRED WITHIN APPROXIMATELY 1,000 MILES BEING DRIVEN. I WAS TRAVELING ON THE I70 WEST TOWARDS KANSAS. THERE ARE FEW PLACES TO TURN OFF, NEAR VAIL, COLORADO. IT ENDANGERED MY LIFE AND THE LIFE OF OTHERS DURING THE TIME THAT I WAS STOPPED ON A FREEWAY ON A MOUNTAIN.
THE MOTOR MOUNT ARE BROKE FROM CORROSION. AND MY MUFFLER WAS REPLACED FOR THE SAME THIS...
WE WERE DRIVING ON THE AUTOBAHN IN GERMANY (MIL FAMILY) WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT ANY WARNING. OUR OIL LEVEL WAS FINE THE DAY BEFORE WE STALLED. WE CHECK OUR OIL EVERY WEEKEND SINCE OUR RAV4 HAS A VERY HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION RATE. OUR EGGINE SEIZED WHILE WE WERE GOING ABOUT 90 MPH WITH OTHER CARS AROUND US GOING EVEN FASTER. WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE NOT CAUSED AN FATAL ACCIDENT. WE WOULD LIKE SOMETHING DONE ABOUT THIS.
MY RAV4 TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE AS OIL LIGHT CAME ON, HOWEVER, TRUCK WAS NOT DUE FOR AN OIL CHANGE AS SERVICE WAS DONE MAY 2018. TECHNICIAN INFORMED ME THAT THE TRUCK WAS BURNING OIL AND REQUIRED THE REPLACEMENT OF PISTONS INSIDE ENGINE. AT THAT TIME, I WAS INFORMED THAT UNDER THE EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION WARRANTY, IT WOULD BE COVERED AT NO CHARGE TO CUSTOMERS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED FOR MY TRUCK AND NOTHING CAN BE DONE BY TOYOTA. HOWEVER, REGULAR MAINTENANCE ON THE TRUCK NEVER INDICATED A PROBLEM AND NO MENTION OF THIS ISSUE WAS EVER ADDRESSED BY THE TECHNICIANS. A YEAR AGO THE TRUCK WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED AND NOW MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS IS BEING COMPROMISED. OF COURSE, ENGINE FAILURE DID NOT OCCUR UNTIL AFTER THE WARRANTY PERIOD EVEN THOUGH REGULAR OIL CHANGES WERE BEING DONE. JUST BECAUSE THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED DOESN'T MEAN THE ISSUE DOESN'T EXIST! WHY IS A COMPANY ALLOWED TO PUT LIVES IN DANGER? TOYOTA IS QUICK TO ADDRESS A RECALL ISSUE YET DOESN'T SEEM TO THINK THIS IS SUCH AN ISSUE. IN NO TIME, YOU COULD BE OUT OF A CAR/TRUCK WITHOUT YOU EVEN KNOWING WHY ESPECIALLY WHEN SERVICES ARE BEING DONE IN A TIMELY MANNER. HOW IS IT THAT DEALER SERVICE CENTERS KNOW WHEN YOU HAVEN'T DONE A RECALL ON YOUR CAR YET DON'T ADDRESS/ADVISE AN ISSUE THAT POTENTIALLY BE A PROBLEM IF NOT TAKEN CARE OF IN THE LONG RUN. I GUESS THE CUSTOMERS SAFETY IS NOT A PRIORITY.
MY CAR BURNS MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL. I GET REGULAR CHANGES AT GOODYEAR. I TOOK IT IN TO TOYOTA WOLFCHASE MEMPHIS FOR NOT 1 BUT 2 RECALLS AND ASKED ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF OIL IT WAS BURNING. THEY INFORMED ME THIS VEHICLE PER VIN# HAD A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT ON IT B/C PISTON DOES NOT SIT PROPERLY AND THAT IS WHY THE LARGE CONSUMPTION OF OIL. AFTER MUCH DISAGREEMENT I ASKED FOR A SUPERVISOR WHO CALLED ME BACK AND INFORMED ME LEGALLY THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO AND THEY COULD NOT HELP ME WITH THE BILL IF I GOT THIS PISTON FIXED. I ASKED HER IF THE ORIGINAL OWNER WAS NOTIFIED BC I COULD NOT IMAGINE NOT GETTING IT FIXED. I SAID THIS ONE MODEL HAS SO MANY RECALLS! IT IS A LEMON. THEN AGAIN SHE EXPLAINED THEY COULD DO NOTHING. SHE NEVER STATED IF THE ORIGINAL OWNER WAS NOTIFIED. (THIS WAS ONE OWNER CAR) I AM NOW USING ABOUT 7 QTS OF OIL PER 5K MILES. YEAP 7 QUARTS. I BEGAN BUYING IN 5 GALLONS AND WRITING MILEAGE ON THE BOTTLE BEFORE I ADD ANY. (IT WAS 3 PER 5K AND HAS INCREASED TO THE LATEST HIGH OF 7 IN THE 2 YRS. SINCE I PURCHASED. I AM AN OLDER DRIVER AND BABY THIS VEHICLE. AT THE DATE I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE PISTON UNDER WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT I WAS IN FOR 2 RECALLS!!! SEAT BELT AND REAR SUSPENSION! IN DEC 2014 MY CAR EXHAUST WAS LOUDER THAN USUAL, THE REPAIR SHOP NOTED THAT THE FRONT CENTER CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS RUSTED AND PERFORATED AND REPLACE IT AT AT COST OF $1844.11. IN JAN 2017 TOYOTA ISSUED SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN G0Y REGARDING THIS EXACT ISSUE, CLAIMING IT WILL EITHER FIX RUSTED SYSTEMS OR REIMBURSE THOSE WHOSE SYSTEMS WERE ALREADY RUSTED AND REPLACED. I SUBMITTED MY REQUEST FOR REIMBURSEMENT, RESPONDED FOR A REQUEST FOR MORE PAPERWORK, AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY DENIED WITHOUT EXPLANATION. TODAY WHEN I CALLED FOR MORE INFO, I WAS TOLD THAT THE DECISION CANNOT BE APPEALED (NFI). SHE FINALLY SAID THAT THE REPAIR SHOP NOTE DID NOT MENTION RUST. EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION RELATING TO TOYOTA'S WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION - ZE7. I KNEW MY ENGINE CONSUMED OIL CHRONICALLY SINCE AT LEAST 75,000 MILES SO WAS NOT SURPRISED WHEN THIS WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT CAME IN THE MAIL. HOWEVER, WHEN I BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET TESTED, THEY SAID IT PASSED THE TEST (THIS WAS IN APRIL 2015 AT ABOUT 135,000 MILES). I WAS FRUSTRATED AND SHOCKED. I THOUGHT I WAS STUCK WITH NO OTHER OPTIONS. RECENTLY, WHEN ADDING OIL I NOTICED I WENT THROUGH 2-2.5 QUARTS IN A WEEK. THAT'S WHEN I INSISTED ON ANOTHER OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. IT FAILED THIS TIME, BUT ACCORDING TO TOYOTA, IT WAS TOO LATE FOR THEM TO COVER AS I WAS OVER THE TERM OF 150,000 MILES (CASE #1803133073). I ASKED FOR OTHER ALTERNATIVES SINCE I BELIEVED THE ORIGINAL TEST TO BE FLAWED (ALLOWING FOR 1-1.5 QUARTS OF OIL CONSUMPTION WHEN THE OWNER'S MANUAL RECOMMENDS OIL CHANGES AT 5,000 MILES. SINCE THE CAR ONLY HOLDS JUST OVER 4.5 QUARTS OF OIL, NO OIL WOULD BE LEFT AT OVER 4,000 MILES). AT THE RATE OF CONSUMPTION, I WORRY ABOUT EXCESSIVE ENGINE HEAT LEADING TO FIRES AND OBVIOUSLY EXCESSIVE WEAR ON THE ENGINE. THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A 'WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT' AND INSTEAD A RECALL AS THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION IN THE 2AZ-FE TOYOTA ENGINE IS WELL DOCUMENTED AS A DESIGN FLAW OR ENGINEERING ERROR WITH THE PISTON RINGS NOT BEING LARGE ENOUGH TO DRAIN OIL OR NOT HAVING ENOUGH HOLES, TRAPPING THE OIL AND CAUSING OIL BURNING. TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR POOR ENGINE DESIGN AND ANY SAFETY ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH IT. AT A MINIMUM THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT SHOULD BE EXTENDED FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE.

THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER AN UNKNOWN RECALL. NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE RECALL DETAILS WERE NOT PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,332.
OUR 2007 RAV4 IS CONSUMING/BURNING OIL AT AN EXTREME RATE. THERE IS NO OIL LEAKING FROM THE VEHICLE. WE ARE ADDING A QUART EVERY 2-3 WEEKS. (RECORDS WILL SHOW THAT PRIOR TO THE RECALL EVEN COMING OUT, WE HAD TAKEN IT IN FOR EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION...SO WHEN THE RECALL CAME OUT WE HOPED IT WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM.) WE WERE SHOCKED WHEN WE WERE TOLD IT DIDN'T "QUALIFY". WE UNDERSTAND THE RECALL PERIOD HAD EXPIRED, BUT THE VEHICLE STILL HAD UNDER 200,000 MILES ON IT WHEN IT FAILED. HOW DOES A VEHICLE GET RECALLED ONLY FOR A CERTAIN WINDOW OF TIME, WHEN WE WERE TOLD IT DOESN'T MEET THE CRITERIA - AND AFTER THAT WINDOW IS "CLOSED" THE VEHICLE FAILS THE TEST? BUT IF I WAITED TIL MY OIL CHANGE THE ENGINE WOULD BE DESTROYED. AND THE VERY LEAST THEY NEED TO ISSUE A RECALL AND FIX THE PROBLEM.

TOOK IT TO ANOTHER NON TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER FOR SECOND OPINION AND WAS TOLD THAT I HAD TWO OPTIONS: TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE AT A COST OF $5K OR TO LIVE WITH IT AND CHECK OIL LEVEL WEEKLY AND REFILL IT YOURSELF IF OIL LEVEL IS LOW. ALSO RECOMMENDED USING 10W40 OIL DUE TO HIGH MILEAGE. I CHOSE THE LATTER AND SO FAR GOING GOOD. REALLY NOT HAPPY WITH TOYOTA DEALERS RESPONSE AS THEY WERE HESITANT TO HELP AND KEPT TELLING ME TO CHANGE THE ENTIRE ENGINE THAT WOULD COST ME $$$ SINCE MY WARRANTY EXPIRED.

AS I READ UP MORE ON THE ISSUE, TOYOTA HAS A DESIGN FLAW IN ITS PISTONS, LEASING TO OIL CONSUMPTION (2006-08 RAV4) WITH THE 2AZ-FE ENGINE. TOYOTA PERFORMED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST (2 STEP ON 10/05/2017), MY CAR FAILED (TOO MUCH OIL CONSUMPTION), BUT TOYOTA WILL NOT FIX, AS MY RAV4 PASS THE WARRANTY DATE. BOUGHT THE RAV4 AT TOYOTA OF MORRISTOWN, NJ IN MAY 2007. OTHER TOYOTA MODELS ALSO USE THE SAME ENGINE. THEY SOLD ME (AND MANY OTHERS TOO) THE RAV4 EVEN WITH THE KNOWN DESIGN FLAWS. IT WILL COST OVER $3.5K TO REBUILD THE ENGINE AT TOYOTA. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATIONS, THEY ONLY ISSUED A FIX IN 2011 WITHIN TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE REP CLAIMS TO RECEIVE MULTIPLE CALLS PER WEEK ON THIS ISSUE. OUR ENGINE FAILED ON A MAJOR INTERSTATE. WHILE TRAVELING 60 MILES PER HOUR.

FOR THE NEXT 1.5K MILES NEED TO ADD 2-3 QUARTS (I ADD 1 QT AT A TIME TO SAVE $, ALWAYS KEEP A QUART IN THE CAR AND LARGER AMT IN THE GARAGE). DEALER SAID IT'S OUT OF WARRANTY AND THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THIS VEHICLE FALLS UNDER THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE; THE DEALERSHIPS WON'T REPAIR IT UNDER WARRANTY, I NEED TO ADD OIL TO IT WEEKLY, IT HAS NO VALUE AND CAN NOT BE SOLD DUE TO THIS AND I'M WORRIED THAT THE ENGINE WILL SEIZE. DURING COLD START AND SOMETIMES WARM START, THE ENGINE MAKES A 2-3 SECOND RATTLES COMING FROM THE CAM GEARS DUE TO LACK OF OIL LUBRICATION
SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN SEPT.2006 I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE 6 IGNITION COILS. #4 HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE AS OF YESTERDAY MARCH 28,2017. THE PROBLEM FIRST BEGAN IN 2010. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN DUE TO THE FACT THAT WHEN THIS ISSUE ARISES MY CRUISE CONTROL DISENGAGES AND ANY VEHICLE FOLLOWING BEHIND WILL SEE NO BRAKE LIGHTS AND MAY REAR END THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE ALSO BECOMES SLUGGISH AND WILL NOT RESPOND LIKE IT SHOULD.
WE HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4 THAT HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM FOR AT LEAST THE PAST TWO YEARS. WE HAVE BROUGHT IT IN THE OUR MECHANIC ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS AND ALSO TO THE DEALERSHIP. THERE WAS A RECALL NOTICE LAST YEAR AND WE HAD THE REQUIRED TESTING DONE TWICE IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH OF 2016 BY THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CLAIMED THE CAR PASSED THE TEST AND WAS NOT DEFECTIVE. HOWEVER THE PROBLEM CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. THE WE HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE CAR AT THE TIME OF THE TESTING WHICH HAS ONLY JUST EXPIRED IN OCTOBER 2016. THIS PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED PRIOR TO THE EXPIRATION OF OUR WARRANTY BUT TOYOTA CLAIMED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. WE HAVE ALWAYS FOLLOWED THE MANUFACTURERS SUGGEST MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE AND HAVE THE SERVICE RECORDS IN OUR POSSESSION. IN THE LAST YEAR TO 18 MONTHS TO TWO YEARS WE WOULD HAVE TO BRING THE CAR IN MORE FREQUENTLY THAN THE MFG RECOMMENDED SERVICE SCHEDULE, AS IT WAS NOT MAKING MORE THAN 2000 MILES BEFORE THE CHECK OIL LIGHT WOULD COME ON. MOST RECENTLY AS LITTLE AS 1200 MILES.

THIS VEHICLE IS USED FOR SCHOOL AND GOING TO ATLANTA FOR APPOINTMENTS OVER 50 MILES FROM MY HOME.FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA BUT WAS TOLD THAT I WAS OVER THE 10 YEAR MARK BY 2 MONTHS HAVENT REACHED THE 150,000 MARK YET JUST AT 135,000 MILES.
STARTING IN 2014, I HAD TO REFILL 1 QT OF OIL EVERY ~1200-1500 MILES DESPITE METICULOUS MAINTENANCE. AFTER RECEIVING A "WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION" LETTER FROM TOYOTA MOTOR SALES U.S.A., INC. ADDRESSING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION, A FIRST OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WAS INITIATED AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN OCTOBER 2015 AND EVALUATED IN DECEMBER 2015. ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE CAR PASSED THIS TEST; OIL CONSUMPTION WOULD STILL BE WITHIN ENGINE SPECIFICATION. THIS WAS A SURPRISE, GIVEN THAT THE OFFICIAL MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE REQUIRES AN OIL CHANGE EVERY 5000 MILES, AND THAT THE PERMITTED OIL CONSUMPTION IN SUCH AN INTERVAL ACCORDING TO ENGINE SPEC. COULD LEAD TO SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE, OR FAILURE. A SECOND OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WAS INITIATED IN SEPTEMBER 2016, AND EVALUATED EARLY DECEMBER 2016 BY THE SAME TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THIS SECOND TEST CONFIRMED AN EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION, I.E. THE TEST HAD FAILED. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE WOULD BE REPAIRED UNDER THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT FREE OF CHARGE. SOON AFTER, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENHANCED WARRANTY PERIOD OF MY VEHICLE HAD EXPIRED 10/31/2016; THEREFORE, ANY COST FOR THE ENGINE REPAIR WOULD NO LONGER BE COVERED. CONSEQUENTLY, THE ENGINE REPAIR WAS CANCELLED. THE DEALERSHIP ARGUED THAT ALTHOUGH THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WAS INITIATED DURING THE WARRANTY PERIOD, THE CONFIRMATION OF THE CONDITION TOOK PLACE AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRATION. THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST REQUIRES ME TO DRIVE 1100-1300 MILES BEFORE I CAN BRING THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR EVALUATION. THE DEALERSHIP RESPONDED THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MY DUTY TO DRIVE THE REQUIRED MILEAGE BEFORE THE END OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE. I CHECKED THE DETAILED CONDITIONS OF THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT AND FOUND NO WRITTEN STATEMENT MENTIONING THAT THE TEST HAS TO BE EVALUATED BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRES; IT IS ONLY STATED THE TEST HAS TO BE INITIATED DURING WARRANTY. *TR

EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. NOTICES MY VEHICLE USED 1/2 A QUART OF OIL IN 480 MILE. TOOK IT IN FOR EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. DEALER INDICATED I MAY HAVE TO DO $170-$1200 IN GASKET REPLACEMENT TO QUALIFY FOR WARRANTY REPAIRS. FIRST I COULD NOT SEE WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT, I.E. NOT LEAKS VISIBLE/APPARENT TO ME. ALSO THIS DID NOT MAKE SENSE ESPECIALLY SINCE THE REPAIRS THEY INDICATED I MAY NEED TO DO, WILL HAVE TO BE REDONE DURING THE WARRANTY REPAIRS. WHEN ASKED WHY, THEY SAID THEY HAD TO REQUIRE THEM TO BE DONE BECAUSE TOYOTA HQ WOULD STICK THEM WITH THE WARRANTY REPAIR BILL IF THEY DISAGREED WITH THEM AS TO WHETHER TO AUTHORIZE THE WARRANTY REPAIRS. TOYOTA HAS ADMITTED THEY HAVE A DESIGN FLAW IN THIS ENGINE IN THIS VEHICLE. WHY WON'T THEY FIX IT WITHOUT SUCH A HASSLE. THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE A FORMAL RECALL SO THEY ARE FORCED TO STOP TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS.

OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE - DEALER CONDUCTED A TEST AND PASSED THE VEHICLE DESPITE IT BURNING A QUART OF OIL AT 1100 MILES - WHICH POINTS IT A 0.009 QUARTS PER MILE - THIS MEANS AND 5000 MILES (THE RECOMMENDED MILEAGE BETWEEN OIL CHANGES) THE CAR HAS BURNED THROUGH 4.54 QUARTS WHEN IT ONLY HOLDS 4.5 QUARTS - IT CONSUMES ALL THE OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. HOW CAN THIS CAR PASS THE TEST?
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE OIL INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT CHECKED THE OIL AND NOTICED THAT THE OIL TANK WAS EMPTY. THE CONTACT ADDED FOUR QUARTS OF OIL AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED AN OIL CHANGE. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND TO BRING IT BACK AFTER 1,100 MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AT 1,100 MILES. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT QUALIFY FOR AN OIL CONSUMPTION SERVICE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. STARTING IN MARCH 2016 IT BECAME EVIDENT THE VEHICLE IS CONSUMING A LOT OF OIL, IT IS NOT MAKING IT BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. NOW BETWEEN OIL CHANGES AT LEAST 2 QTS OF OIL HAS TO BE ADDED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE RECEIVED A RECALL REPAIR THAT INVOLVED REBUILDING THE ENGINE. A MONTH AFTER RECEIVING THE REPAIR, SMOKE APPEARED UNDER THE HOOD WHEN ACCELERATING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE BLEW OUT BECAUSE FUEL FROM THE FUEL INJECTOR LEAKED ONTO THE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE UNKNOWN.
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. ENGINE LOCKED. AFTER CONTACTING TOYOTA MAIN HOTLINE TO ALERT THEM OF THE PROBLEM. THEY PROVIDED ME WITH INFORMATION TO TEST THE OLI CONSUMPTION AND TO TAKE THE RESULTS TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. AFTER COMPLETING INITIAL TESTING, THE DEALERHSHIP INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS NOT BURNING OIL. THE VEHICLE STILL WAS BURNING OLL. TOYOTA SUBSEQUENTLY ISSUED A NOTICE THAT THE VEHICLES WERE BURNING OIL AND THAT THEY WOULD SEND A PART TO THE DEALERSHIPS TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP THEN INFORMED ME THAT THEY WERE WAITING ON THE PARTS TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE PARTS NEVER ARRIVED AND NOW MY ENGINE HAS LOCKED DUE TO INSUFFICIENT OIL. I WANT TO BE MADE WHOLE.
TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR AN UNRELATED RECALL AND WAS TOLD WE NEEDED TO HAVE AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST, VEHICLE FAILED - HAD ENGINE REBUILD WORK PERFORMED AT TOYOTA DEALERSHIP (AS RECOMMENDED BY TOYOTA TO REMEDY THE OIL CONSUMPTION FAILURE) FREE OF CHARGE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE DEALERSHIPS RECOMMENDATION OF REPLACING THE WATER PUMP AND GASKETS WE PAID FOR. LESS THAN 10K MILES LATER THE MOTOR IS BLOWN - CAUSE GIVEN: OIL STARVATION. WE HAD THE OIL CHANGED EVERY 3000 MILES AND THE OIL WAS CHECKED ONCE A MONTH AND NEVER SHOWED LOW ON THE DIP STICK. THE DEALERSHIP AND AN ENGINEER DEEMED THE PROBLEM IS OURS AND TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY. WE AS CONSUMERS WERE NEVER REPRESENTED AT THE TIME THE DETERMINATION WAS MADE. I HAVE REQUESTED THE ENGINEER'S REPORT IN WRITING. TO BE CLEAR, THE VEHICLE WAS PERFECTLY FINE WHEN ORIGINALLY TAKEN IN FOR THE UNRELATED RECALL, IT DIDN'T EVEN REQUIRE ADDITIONAL OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES.
I STARTED AN EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WITH WESTCHESTER TOYOTA ON 2-27-15 AND FAILED ON 4-7-15. SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN REPEATEDLY TOLD THAT I AM A WAITING LIST AND IT IS UNKNOWN WHEN MY ENGINE WILL B OVERHAULED. MY CURRENT RATE OF OIL CONSUMPTION IS 10 QUARTS OF OIL FOR 3000 MILES AND THIS HAS STEADILY INCREASED. MY EXHAUST IS COATED IN BURNT OIL AND I FEAR THE ENGINE WILL SEIZE AT SOME POINT. YET I AM ON A WAITING LIST FOR OVER A YEAR WITH NO REPAIR DATE IN SITE.
PURCHASED MY RAV4 USED FROM TOYOTA/SCION OF GRAND RAPIDS AROUND JANUARY/FEBRUARY OF 2016. IT HAD JUST A SMIDGE OVER 77,000 MILES ON IT. MY FIRST OIL CHANGE WAS EARLY DUE TO LOW OIL LIGHT COMING ON. I TOOK IT INTO A PRIVATE OWNED SHOP WHERE IT WAS DISCOVERED THERE WAS HARDLY ANY OIL IN IT AT ALL. CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP, THEY HAD ME BRING IT IN TO CHECK, AND START MY OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. TEST COMPLETED AT 81,711 MILES. THE TECHS "CHECKED IT" AND THAT IT PASSED THE TEST AND THEREFORE, WOULD NOT PERFORM THE REBUILD. ADDITIONALLY, TOLD ME THAT IT'S NORMAL FOR VEHICLES TO CONSUME OIL. I THOUGHT IT WAS A BIT EXCESSIVE, GETTING A LOW OIL LIGHT HALFWAY IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. I ACCEPTED THE NEWS THINKING MAYBE IT WAS JUST A FLUKE. AFTER 2,000 MILES, I DECIDED TO RE-CHECK MY OIL. AGAIN, THERE WAS PRACTICALLY NOTHING ON THE DIPSTICK, MY LIGHT HAD NOT TURNED ON. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND I ASKED ABOUT HAVING ANOTHER TEST DONE. TO WHICH THEY REPLIED, "TOYOTA ONLY ALLOWS 2 FREE TESTS (PER YEAR?)" . SO INSTEAD OF STARTING ANOTHER TEST, I WAS TOLD TO CHECK MY OIL EVERY THOUSAND MILES. AND IF MY LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, CONTACT THEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THEIR GOAL WAS TO "MAKE IT FAIL" SO THAT THEY WOULD PERFORM THE REBUILD FOR ME. AT THE 1,000 MILE MARK, I CHECKED THE DIPSTICK. ALREADY DOWN TO ABOUT 3/4. I THOUGHT THIS ALONE WAS PRETTY EXCESSIVE. AT THE 2,000 MILE MARK I CHECKED AGAIN. HARDLY ANYTHING ON THE DIPSTICK THIS TIME. COULD NOT READ THE LEVEL PROPERLY. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THE TECH ASKED SOME QUESTIONS. STILL WASN'T "GOOD ENOUGH." I QUESTIONED HIM ABOUT THE NEWEST READING, HE SAID IT WAS "NORMAL" AND GAVE ME SOME GARBAGE ABOUT OIL USE AND THINNING OUT, ETC. HE INSTRUCTED ME TO PUT IN 2 MORE QUARTS OF OIL AND TO KEEP CHECKING EVERY 1,000 MILES. SEEMS TO ME THAT THERE IS DEFINITELY AN ISSUE, AND THE DEALERSHIP IS NOT ACKNOWLEDGING IT.
CAR COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN DURING DRIVING. JUST BOUGHT THIS 2 DAYS AGO AND IT'S HAPPENED TWICE ALREADY, ONCE ON CITY ROADS AND ONCE ON HWY. EVERYTHING SHUTS OFF, LIGHTS/ENGINE/EVERYTHING.
CAR LOSING OIL COMPARABLE TO OTHER COMPLAINTS LOGGED BY OWNERS ON VARIOUS BOARDS AND TOYOTA SITES ACROSS WWW. DEALERSHIP REPLACED OIL PAN GASKET AND VALVE COVER GASKET AND PROBLEM IS NOT RESOLVED.
VEHICLE IS CONSUMING AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL WHICH I FEEL COULD LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE, AND IF THIS SHOULD OCCUR WHILE I AM DRIVING ON AN EXPRESSWAY AT A HIGH SPEED IT COULD BE DISASTROUS. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND SAID THAT THE CONSUMPTION IS NORMAL AT THE RATE OF 1 QT PER 1000 MILES WHICH I DISAGREE.
SINCE 2015 I WAS INFORMED BY THE ELGIN TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DURING MY OIL CHANGES THAT MY TOYOTA 2007 RAV4 HAD VIRTUALLY NO OIL. THE DEALERSHIP REPLENISHED IT AND 1000 MILES LATER THE OIL LIGHT COMES ON AND NO OIL WAS REGISTERED ON THE DIPSTICK. SEPT 2015 I WAS FINALLY TOLD ABOUT AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WHICH THEY SAID I PASSED YET OIL WOULD DISAPPEAR NOW WITHIN 800 MILES. THEY AGREED TO DO ANOTHER OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND DURING THAT TIME THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON SO I DROVE TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP WHICH WAS IN ST. CHARLES, IL. THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE CAR AND THE ELGIN DEALERSHIP SHOULD HAD NEVER PASSED MY CAR. I HAD TO DO A 3RD OIL CONSUMPTION TEST BECAUSE I WAS A FEW MILES OVER THE REQUIRED MILEAGE FOR THE 2ND TEST TO BE VALID. IN FEBRUARY 2016 I FAILED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND THEY PUT ME ON THE WAIT LIST AND TOLD ME THEY'RE OUT OF PARTS TO FIX THE CAR. DESPITE REPEATED PHONE CALLS TO SERVICE MANAGER AND OPEN CASE AT THE RECOMMENDED TOLL FREE # I HAVE NOT BEEN TAKING CARE OF. THE CAR CAN NOT DRIVE EVEN 400 MILES WITHOUT ME REFILLING THE OIL. THEY BASICALLY TOLD ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND THE DISTRICT MANAGER DID NOT APPROVE A RENTAL CAR. I AM A PROFESSIONAL BUSINESSWOMAN AND HAVE TO GO UNDER MY VEHICLE EVERY 2 DAYS! I HAVE TO PURCHASED A 5 QUART JUG OF OIL EVERY TWO WEEKS AND WAS TOLD TO KEEP MY RECEIPTS BECAUSE THEY WILL REIMBURSE ME, WHICH AT THIS POINT I DON'T BELIEVE THEM BECAUSE THEY DON'T APPEARED TO HAVE ANY ATTENTION ON FIXING THE PROBLEM. I'M WORRIED MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION WILL BLOW ITS ENGINE WHICH IS WHAT TOYOTA PROBABLY WANTS TO HAPPEN SO THEY CAN BLAME ME AND THAT'S ONE LESS PERSON THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH. I PAID OVER 20K FOR THIS CAR.
WE WERE DRIVING STRAIGHT ON I-95 AT 70 MPH WHEN WE HEARD SOME LOUD NOISES AND THE CAR STARTED SWERVING (BETWEEN EXITS 65 AND 71 IN NC). WE THOUGHT THE TIRE BLEW OUT, BUT THEN WE SAW SMOKE IN THE REAR WINDOW. WE MANAGED TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SAW SOME OIL LEAKING IN THE BOTTOM. WE OPENED THE HOOD AND SMOKE WAS COMING OUT. THE OUTSIDE OF THE TAIL PIPE WAS COMPLETELY BLACK. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND WERE INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE WAS BLOWN. A PISTON DROVE THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK.
TOOK A TRIP FROM WA.STATE TO UTAH.HAD OIL CHANGED AND CHECKED BEFORE DEPARTING. CHECKED OIL IN UTAH AND SAW THAT OIL WAS WAY DOWN. BOUGHT MORE OIL FOR TRIP HOME.WE USED ABOUT 4-5 QRTS FOR ENTIRE TRIP. TOOK CAR TO TOYOTA DEALER TO DO OIL USAGE TEST. AFTER TEST DEALER SAID IT DID NOT USE ENOUGH OIL TO FIX THE PROBLEM. WE ARE VERY UNSATISFIED WITH THIS RESULT AND ARE WONDERING WHAT TO DO NOW. AFTER READING MANY BLOGS WE SEE THAT THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM THAT TOYOTA IS NOT VERY EAGER TO FIX. SHOULD WE TAKE LEGAL ACTION?
OIL CUMSUMPTION RECALL. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD POP ON ONLY A FEW WEEKS AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. BROUGHT THE CAR BACK IN 1200 MILES AFTER THE OIL CHANGE, AND THEY SAID THE CAR FAILED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST, AND THAT I WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN THEY HAVE A FIX. FOUR MONTHS LATER I AM STILL WAITING. HAD ANOTHER OIL CHANGE NEAR THE END OF MARCH, I INQUIRED ON WHAT THE STATUS WAS FOR THIS FIX, THEY TOLD ME THAT SINCE THIS IS A LARGE NATIONAL RECALL THAT I WAS ON THE BOTTOM OF A REPAIR LIST, AND THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE PLANT IN THE UNITED STATES MAKING PARTS FOR THIS RECALL. THEY THEN TOLD ME THAT I HAVE BEEN MOVED UP TO NUMBER 5 ON THEIR WAIT LIST. TOWARD THE END OF APRIL, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN. I FIRST CHECKED THE DIPSTICK, AND THERE WAS NO OIL ON IT. I REFILLED THE OIL MYSELF AND IT TOOK A FULL 5 QUARTS. NOW THERE IS OIL ON THE DIPSTICK, STILL HAVE YET TO HEAR A THING FROM TOYOTA. WHY ARE THEY MAKING ME WAIT? ARE THEY WAITING UNTIL THE WARRANTY ON MY CAR EXPIRES SO I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR? IN MY OPINION, TO MAKE ME HAVE TO WAIT THIS LONG IS NOT RIGHT. TOYOTA IS A BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY AND SHOULD HAVE THE PARTS READY ESPECIALLY FOR A RECALL OF THIS MAGNITUDE.
TOYOTA IS A WELL KNOWN GLOBAL AUTO COMPANY WITH HIGH STANDARD AND HIGH PERFORMANCE AUTOS. IT'S TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR AN ENGINE TO CONSUME OIL AFTER 60,000 MILES. THE LOW MILEAGE ENGINE MALFUNCTION IS TOTALLY DUE TO BAD QUALITY MANUFACTURING PRACTICES, LOW STANDARDS OF QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE WHICH MAY CAUSE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN LOSSES AND PENALTY FOR THE TOYOTA 01/15/2016 FILE NUMBER: 1512120607 MOTOR SALES COMPANY. ONLY IN CALIFORNIA OVER 40 CUSTOMERS REPORTED COMPLAINS TO CALIFORNIA BUREAU OF AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR A DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIR OVER THE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION OF TOYOTA RAV4. THE TOYOTA MOTOR SALES COMPANY IS REQUIRED TO CORRESPOND WITHIN THREE BUSINESS DAYS UPON RECEIVING THIS LETTER TO PREVENT FURTHER LEGAL COMPLAINT BY THE PLAINTIFF. HEREBY THE PLAINTIFF DEMAND THE TOYOTA MOTOR SALES TO ISSUE A FULL REFUND IN AMOUNT OF $ 1395.63 FOR THE COST RELATED TO THE AUTO PARTS DAMAGED AS THE RESULT OF ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION. HERBY THE CUSTOMER IS LOOKING FOR PROMPTED RESPONSE FROM TOYOTA MOTOR SALES PRIOR TO HIS/HER FURTHER COMPLAIN TO CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIR WHICH MAY LEAD TO A RECALL ON THE TOYOTA RAV MODEL, AND CAUSES THE TOYOTA MOTOR SALES TO PAY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON PENALTY, AND FEES TO GENERAL PUBLIC. UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AFTER THE CAR HIT A POT HOLE ON I-270 SOUTHBOUND. WITH BOTH BRAKE AND EMERGENCY BRAKE FULLY ENGAGED THE CAR STILL WENT WITH A SPEED FASTER THAN MOST OF THE CARS ON THE ROAD. I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE THE CAR IN THE GRASS INTERMEDIATE AREA FOR ~10 SECONDS TILL THE CAR ROLLED OVER AND THE ENGINE FINALLY CAME TO A STOP. THIS RAV4 WAS RECALLED BY TOYOTA AND HAD ITS "STUCK GAS PEDAL" PROBLEM FIXED A FEW YEARS AGO. TOYOTA ALSO FIXED THE EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM LAST YEAR AND I HAVE BEEN PLEASED WITH TOYOTA'S SERVICE AND HOW THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CAR IN GENERAL TILL THIS LIFE THREATENING EVENT OCCURRED YESTERDAY.

BURNING 1.5-2 QUARTS OF ENGINE OIL PER WEEK, THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS. OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WAS DONE ON THE VEHICLE AND IT FAILED. THE DEALERSHIP HAS FAILED TO FIXED THE ISSUE.
2007 RAV4 USES AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED WITH APPROXIMATELY 146,000 MILES. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 4,000 AND I HAVE HAD TO ADD 2 QUARTS OF OIL TO THE ENGINE. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THE SAME SITUATION AND TOYOTA IS DOING NOTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM.

REPLACED ENGINE WITH A REBUILT. ONLY HAD 136,000 MILES ON RAV4. THE RAV4 HAD REGULAR OIL CHANGES AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. NOW I AM SEEING ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE THAT TOYOTA KNEW ABOUT ENGINES PROBLEMS. ON OCT 19 WRITTEN NOTICE RECEIVED, STATES REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPLACING THE ENGINE DENIED. RECEIVED NOTICE FROM TOYOTA REGARDING WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT ZE7 AFTER ENGINE FAILED THAT RAV 4 HAD AN EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. LAST YEAR, THE MILEAGE DROPPED PRECIPITOUSLY-- BY 10 MPG, IN FACT. SINCE THEN, MY LOW OIL LIGHT INDICATOR CAME ON IN LESS THAN 3,000 MILES. TOYOTA WON'T FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE REDEFINED WHAT IT MEANS TO BURN EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL-- 1 QUART EVERY 1200 MILES ISN'T A PROBLEM ACCORDING TO THEM. THOUSANDS OF TOYOTA OWNERS NOW FIND THEMSELVES WITH CARS THAT BURN OIL, HAVE REDUCED MPG, AND NO RECOURSE WITH TOYOTA. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE OF EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. IT HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS PURCHASE NEW. I HAVE BEEN HAVING REGULAR OIL CHANGES AT MY LOCAL AAA SHOP AS SCHEDULED FOR MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHEN MY MAINTENANCE LIGHT CAME ON I TOOK IT IN TO AAA WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. I WAS TOLD IT HAD ONLY BEEN 3000 MILES SINCE MY LAST OIL CHANGE, BUT THAT THERE WAS ONLY 1 QT. OF OIL LEFT IN THE CAR. THERE WERE NO LEAKS DETECTED AND THEY SAID THE CAR WAS NOT SMOKING TO INDICATE IT WAS BURNING OIL. TWO MOS. LATER I TOOK THE CAR TO MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR AN INSPECTION STICKER. I TOLD THEM THE CAR WAS RUNNING ROUGH AND TO CHECK IT OUT. THEY REPLACED SPARK PLUGS AND VALVE COVER GASKET. SHORTLY THEREAFTER I RECEIVED NOTICE FROM TOYOTA ABOUT EXCESSIVE OIL USE FOR MY MODEL. I TOOK IT IN FOR THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. DURING THE 1000 MI TEST IT BURNED ANOTHER QUART AND A HALF OF OIL. THEY DISREGARDED MY COMPLAINT ABOUT BURNING ALL BUT 1 QT. WITHIN 3000 MI. AND SAID THE CONSUMPTION WAS NORMAL. CAR CONTINUES TO RUN ROUGH.
MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4 IS EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE OIL USAGE WHICH TOYOTA KNOWS IS A PROBLEM WITH VEHICLES THAT HAS A 2AZ ENGINE. THEY ADDED 4/5 QUARTS OF OIL, AND TAPPED UP EVERYTHING INCLUDING DIP STICK SO I COULD NOT CHECK THE OIL. TOLD ME I HAD TO DRIVE 1,100 TO 1,300 MILES AND THEN COME BACK. I WAS QUITE UPSET, BECAUSE I WAS UNABLE TO KNOW IF OIL WAS LEAKING AGAIN, SINCE THEY TAPED THE DIP STICK. CALLED CORPORATE WAS TOLD TO TAKE TAPE OFF DIP STICK. HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE 1,100 MILES BUT OIL IS A LITTLE BELOW THE 2 DOTS. I CALLED TOYOTA, TOLD THEM I HAD TO BE IN RALEIGH FOR WORK AND ASKED THEM TO JUST FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID I HAD 2 CHOICES, DELAY MY EMPLOYMENT UNTIL I HIT THE 1,100 MILES FOR A RE CHECK OR LEAVE FOR RALEIGH AND IF OIL LIGHT COMES ON HAVE CAR TOWED TO TOYOTA. REALLY, I AM 62 AND TRAVELING WITH 2 BIRDS IN THE HEAT OF THE SUMMER. THEY TOLD ME IF I GET TO 1,100 MILES AND OIL IS LOW IT DOES NOT MEAN THEY WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. V6 ENGINE MAKES A RATTLE NOISE AT STARTUP. IT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED BY THE DEALER AS THE VVT CAMSHAFT GEAR. TOYOTA HAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (T-SB-0094-09) IDENTIFYING THE CAUSE AS THE INTAKE OR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT VVT ASSEMBLY. HOWEVER THE LEXUS DIVISION OF TOYOTA HAS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM ON IS AND GS MODELS (REFERENCE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V395000). THE CONSEQUENCE IS THAT THE LOOSE BOLTS COULD CAUSE THE VVT GEAR HOUSING AND SPROCKET TO SEPARATE AND RESULT IN THE ENGINE STOPPING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. IF THIS IS DANGEROUS ENOUGH TO CAUSE A CRASH FOR A LEXUS CUSTOMER, THEN WHY ISN'T THIS DANGEROUS ENOUGH TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR A TOYOTA CUSTOMER. THE DAY BEFORE THE SERVICE APPOINTMENT AND DRIVING ON THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY, MY ENGINE SLOWED WAY DOWN AND LOST ALMOST ALL POWER. THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A VERY LOUD NOISE AND WOULD ONLY GO ABOUT 30 MPH. THE NEXT DAY THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP CALLS AND INFORMS ME THAT I NEED A NEW ENGINE. I WENT WITH A JASPER REBUILT ENGINE WHICH STILL COST ME $6,100 INSTALLED. *TR

ADDED 3 QUARTS OF OIL AND HAD OIL CHANGED AT TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ON 6/30/14 AT 87829. CONTINUED TO CHECK AND ADD OIL-NEXT ROUTINE OIL CHANGE: 11/19/14 AT 93035 MILES AT TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. WITHIN A FEW MONTHS, CAR WAS STRUGGLING UP HILLS AND SOUNDING LIKE IT WOULD STALL. EMERGENCY OIL CHECK-LOW OIL AT 94709 MILES. LOCAL MECHANIC HAD TO ASSIST TO PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE TO VEHICLE. RECEIVED AN "EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION" NOTICE FROM TOYOTA ON 2/6/15. PROTOCOL TO ADDRESS MALFUNCTIONING ENGINES IS TO HAVE TOYOTA VERIFY "EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION". CUSTOMER MUST PAY FOR OIL CHANGE IN ORDER TO BEGIN PROCESS, REGARDLESS OF PAST EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT CLAIMS OF EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. DANGEROUS, FAULTY ISSUES WITH ENGINES SHOULD NOT BE THE DRIVERS' RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVE. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE OWNER HAS MAINTAINED ALL RECORDS TO DEMONSTRATE PROPER CARE OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
1. MY CAR USES AN ALARMING AMOUNT OF OIL (1 QUART BEFORE EVERY 1500 MILES). 2. IN ADDITION, THE OIL WARNING LIGHT NEVER COMES ON. I DISCOVERED THIS DEFECT WHEN I FIRST REALIZED MY CAR WAS BURNING AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF OIL, AND I WAS THREE QUARTS LOW JUST PRIOR TO MY OIL CHANGE. *TR
I HAVE BEEN BRINGING MY CAR TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. DURING THIS PERIOD MY CAR WAS COVERED UNDER MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY. I'VE HAD MY BRAKES REPAIRED, SEVERAL RECALLS TENDED TO, AND MANY OIL CHANGES PERFORMED. THERE WAS ONE OCCASION WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A CHAIN AUTO SERVICE STORE TO HAVE AN OIL CHANGE PERFORMED. IT WAS AT THIS CHAIN THAT I WAS INFORMED THAT THE OIL LEVEL IN MY CAR WAS DANGEROUSLY LOW. I CALLED THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT I USUALLY BRING MY CAR TO FOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY NEEDED TO PERFORM AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST ON MY CAR. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS SO THAT THEY COULD PERFORM THE TEST. ON THE FINAL TEST DAY I WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS INDEED LOSING ABNORMALLY EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL AND THAT THE FIRST STEP TO REMEDYING THE MATTER WOULD REQUIRE TAKING THE ENGINE APART. AT THIS POINT MY MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND I AM NOW RELYING ON MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, I FOUND THAT THE EXCESSIVE LOSS OF OIL IN CARS LIKE MINE IS A ISSUE THAT TOYOTA IS VERY FAMILIAR WITH. IN 2011, TOYOTA ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ACKNOWLEDGING THE PROBLEM. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHICH SERVICED MY CAR NEVER TOLD ME THIS EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP HAS TOLD ME THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY MAY DECIDE NOT TO COVER THE COST OF REPAIR AFTER THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REMOVED AND TAKEN APART AT WHICH POINT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR THE REPAIRS. HOWEVER, IF THE REPAIR NEEDED TO BE DONE WHEN MY CAR WAS UNDER MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY, THEN WHY DIDN'T THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPAIR IT? THE TSB WAS ISSUED IN 2011 AND I BEGAN BRINGING MY CAR TO THEM IN 2012. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE MY CAR REPAIRED. *TR
JUST AFTER OIL CHANGE, ABOUT ONE WEEK LATER AND HAVING DRIVEN ABOUT 500 MILES, OIL WAS ALREADY ONE QUART LOW. SINCE THEN IT VARIES, BUT IT BURNS MORE OIL THAN ANY CAR I'VE EVER OWNED. NOW MY CAR HAS EXCEEDED THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY AND TOYOTA HAS INFORMED ME THAT MY EXTENDED WARRANTY MAY NOT COVER THE COST OF REPAIRS EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS UNDER MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY BEFORE THE PROBLEM WAS POINTED OUT TO ME. I WAS ALSO INFORMED TODAY THAT IT COULD COST ME $1100-$1200 JUST TO HAVE TO ENGINE TAKEN APART. THE COST OF REPAIRING THE VEHICLE WILL INCREASE IF THEY TAKE IT APART AND THE PROBLEM ISN'T COVERED BY MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. *TR

THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING; HOWEVER, WHEN RESEARCHED ONLINE THERE IS A PENDING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST TOYOTA AND THERE WAS ALSO A SERVICE BULLETIN IN 2011 ADVISING THE DEALERSHIPS TO REMEDY PROBLEM. AT THAT TIME MY CAR WOULD HAVE STILL BEEN UNDER WARRANTY BUT SINCE IT IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO COVER IT. THEY ESTIMATE COST BETWEEN $4-6000. *TR

BETWEEN OIL CHANGES IT IS NOT UNUSUAL TO PUT IN TWO TO THREE QUARTS OF OIL. DRIVER CARRIES AT LEAST ONE QUART OF OIL IN VEHICLE AT ALL TIMES TO HOPEFULLY PRECLUDE ENGINE SEIZURE. TWO DAYS AGO, I THOUGHT I SAW THE OIL LIGHT FLASH, IT ONLY IS A QUICK FLASH. I DECIDED TO CHECK THE OIL, IT TOOK 4 QUARTS. NO WARNING EXCEPT ONE EXTREMELY RAPID FLASH SO FAST THAT YOU'RE NOT SURE IF YOU SAW IT. AND THE CAR WAS DOWN FOUR QUARTS! THE OIL WAS PUT IN BY A MECHANIC WHO COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO LIVE IN FEAR OF THE ENGINE SEIZING UP BECAUSE IT HAS RUN OUT OF OIL. I GET MY OIL CHANGED EVERY 3000 MILES AS RECOMMENDED BUT THIS CAR BURNS OIL AT AN UNUSUAL RATE. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CHECK THE OIL EVERY DAY BUT IT SEEM I HAVE NO CHOICE. A CAR WITH THIS LOW MILEAGE SHOULD NOT BE BURNING OIL AT THIS RATE. TOYOTA INSISTS THAT THIS IS NORMAL. AND THAT I NO LONGER NEEDED TO COME IN FOR TESTS. 96,546 MILES 3/19/14 HAD OIL CHANGE, THERE WAS NO MENTION OF OIL LEVELS. 99,434 MILES 5/23/14 OIL LIGHT CAME ON, TOOK CAR IMMEDIATELY TO DEALER, WAS TOLD ?VEHICLE HAD A QUART OF OIL LEFT: IT HAS BEEN 3,000 MILES SINCE LAST OIL CHANGE. THIS IS NORMAL TECHNICIAN TOPPED OFF OIL. THE OIL LIGHT HAS NOT COME BACK ON SINCE THIS TIME. 101,628 MILES 7/23/14 WENT IN FOR OIL CHANGE. NO MENTION OF OIL LEVELS. WAS TOLD TO TOP OFF OIL HALF WAY THROUGH TILL NEXT SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE. AFTER AROUND 2500 MILES CHECKED OIL AND ADDED 3 QUARTS OF OIL, CHECKED AGAIN BEFORE GOING IN FOR 5000 MILE OIL CHANGE AND ADDED 2 QUARTS. 106,232 MILES 11/06/14 WENT IN FOR OIL CHANGE INSISTING THAT THIS CAN NOT BE "NORMAL" OIL CONSUMPTION NEED TO HAVE THE ENGINE CHECKED OUT. DEALER RECOMMENDING THAT WE DO CONSUMPTION TESTS AGAIN. BEING TOLD THAT ANYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO ADDRESS OIL PROBLEMS WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
MY 07 RAV 4 HAS HARD/ ROUGH IDLING ISSUE. THE CAR WILL (AT TIMES) HAS ROUGH IDLING ISSUE RIGHT AT COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS ISSUE DOES NOT OCCUR WHEN AC/HEAT FAN IS ON. I CHANGE MY OIL EVERY 3,0000 MILES EVEN SYNTHETIC OIL RECOMMENDS THAT 5000 MILES ARE DEALERS RECOMMENDED AND CAR CAN RUN EVEN LONGER ON A FULL SYNTHETIC OIL. BUT NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY I CHANGE MINE EVERY 3000 MILES. FOR LAST MANY OIL CHANGE I FIND MY OIL LEVEL TO BE VERY VERY LOW. I MEAN ALMOST 1 AND A HALF COURT DOWN, IN LESS THEN 30000 MILES. FUNNY THING IS I PUT HALF COURT OF OIL BETWEEN THE 3000 MILES DRIVEN ON OIL CHANGES. SO THEORETICALLY IT WAS 2 QT DOWN FROM OIL. THIS PROBLEM I STARTED TO NOTICE AROUND 60,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE. THERE IS NO LEAKS. I HAVE GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF CARS AS I HAVE WORKED ON HONDA ACCORDS AND CAMRYS FROM OLDER MODELS. I HAVE CHANGED STEERING PUMP TO GASKETS TO SPEED SENSORS AND MANY MORE ON CARS. I CAN ASSURE THAT THIS CAR DOES NOT HAVE ANY LEAKS EXCEPT FOR OIL PAN GET SLIGHTLY WET AROUND THE BOLT AREA BECAUSE OF PERHAPS NEEDS A SEAL OR NEW BOLT. IN TOTAL THAT OIL WONT ADD UP TO MORE THAN 10-20 DROPS IN TOTAL THROUGH OUT THE TIME OF OIL CHANGE IF THAT. THIS EXTREME AMOUNT OF ENGINE OIL BURNOUT SEEMS LIKE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR. TOO COMMON TO BELIEVE IT WAS MADE BY TOYOTA. IM VERY SURPRISED AS TO WHY TOYOTA WON'T RECOGNIZE AS THEIR FAULT. (WELL NOT REALLY THAT SURPRISED). *TR
WE RETURNED FROM A TRIP TO RENO/CALIFORNIA IN MY TOYOTA RAV 4. I HAD DECIDED TO WAIT UNTIL I RETURNED TO CHANGE OIL SINCE THERE WAS ONLY ABOUT 3000 OR LESS ON THE LAST CHANGE,. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE INCLUDING CHANGING THE TRANSMISSION OIL (ABOUT $600 ). A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER, I CHECKED THE OIL AND IT WAS DOWN 1 1/2 QUARTS. I NOW STILL HAVE ABOUT 2000 MILES TO GO BEFORE MY CAR NEEDS ANOTHER OIL CHANGE AND IT WAS AGAIN LOW AND ANOTHER QUART WAS ADDED. PER MY RESEARCH I FIND THAT TOYOTA HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND SENT OUT INFO TO DEALERS IN 2011 TO FIX THE PROBLEM IF IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. ACCORDING TO WHAT I'VE READ, IT REQUIRES A PISTON TO BE REPLACED. TOYOTA HAS TOTALLY IGNORED THIS PROBLEM AND I FIND THAT IT SEEMS TO BE COMMON ON RAV4'S. *TR

MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 STARTED TO CONSUME COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF OIL. THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF OIL LEAKAGE AND NO SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE. I ALWAYS HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AT A TOYOTA DEALER SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW. AFTER MY RECENT OIL CHANGE, I DROVE APPROXIMATELY 1,500 MILES AND HAD TO PUT IN 2 QUARTS OF OIL. I ASSUMED THIS WAS A FLUKE AND TOYOTA DID NOT FILL THE OIL UP. BUT NOW AGAIN, I DROVE ANOTHER 1,500 MILES AND THIS TIME IT WAS BONE DRY ON THE DIP STICK. I DID NOT RECEIVE A LOW OIL LIGHT. I ADDED ANOTHER 2 QUARTS OF OIL TO BRING IT UP TO THE BOTTOM LINE. *TR

THE EXTERNAL OIL PRESSURE LINE TO THE REAR CYLINDER HEAD BUSTED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS CAUSED THE ENGINE TO COMPLETELY DUMP ALL 6 QUARTS OF MOTOR OIL ONTO THE HIGHWAY. FORTUNATE FOR ME I WAS ONLY 0.8 MILES FROM AN EXIT WITH A SAFE PARKING LOT. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE OIL FROM MY VEHICLE CAUSED ANY WRECKS ON THE INTERSTATE, HOWEVER THE POTENTIAL FOR A MOTORCYCLE WRECK OR ANY VEHICLE THAT HAD TO MAKE A SUDDEN SLOW DOWN OR QUICK MANEUVER WOULD BE AT A HIGH RISK OF AN ACCIDENT. NOT ONLY DID THIS PUT MY ENGINE AT RISK FOR CATASTROPHIC FAILURE, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY AVOIDED. TOYOTA IS NOT ONLY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT HAVE PROCEDURES IN PLACE TO FIX THE HOSE WHEN IT RUPTURES. ITS NOT A MATTER OF IF THE HOSE WILL RUPTURE, BUT WHEN WILL THE OIL HOSE RUPTURE. IF I HAD BEEN INFORMED OF THE NEED TO REPLACE THE HOSE I WOULD HAVE GLADLY HAVE HAD THE HOSE REPLACED. THE LEAST TOYOTA SHOULD DO IS SEND EVERY OWNER OF THIS TYPE OF ENGINE WITH THIS TYPED OF HOSE A LETTER EXPLAINING WHAT COULD POSSIBLY HAPPEN AND WHAT THEY NEED TO DO TO PREVENT THIS VERY PREVENTABLE PROBLEM. *TR

AFTER THE CHECK ENGINE, VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL & 4WD WARNING LIGHTS DISPLAYED ON MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 WITH 89,400 MILES, I WENT TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM. UPON INSPECTION AND TESTING, THEIR SERVICE ADVISOR STATED, "THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM HAS MALFUNCTIONED SINCE WATER HAS LEAKED INTO THE EMISSION SYSTEM & ITS CHARCOAL CANISTER". THE SOURCE OF THE WATER OCCURRED SINCE THE FUEL FILLER TUBE HOUSING NO LONGER WAS PROPERLY ATTACHED/SECURED TO THE VEHICLE. THIS ALLOWED RWATER COMING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE TO ENTER THROUGH THE FUEL FILLER DOOR BY THE FUEL CAP INTO THE CHARCOAL CANISTER. TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM, THE FUEL FILLER ASSEMBLY ALONG WITH GASKETS, SOME ELECTRONIC AND THE CHARCOAL CANISTER REQUIRED REPLACEMENT FOR THE EMISSION SYSTEM TO PROPERLY FUNCTION AND TO BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH EPA STANDARDS. THE TOTAL COST OF THE REPAIR $1,400 WHICH TOYOTA WOULD NOT COVER SINCE IT WAS NOT UNDER RECALL, NOR WOULD THEY CONSIDER PAYING UNDER MY EXTENDED 6 YR 100,000 MILE WARRANTY SINCE THAT EXPIRED JULY 5, 2013. I FIND IT INCREDIBLE THAT TOYOTA WOULD NOT PAY FOR THESE REPAIRS SINCE THEY INVOLVE EMISSIONS AS WELL AS A SAFETY ISSUES. BASED ON MY REVIEW OF VARIOUS BLOGS COVERING RAV4'S, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND TOYOTA ADMITS NO FAULT. AS WITH ALL ISSUES WITH TOYOTA THEY DENY THEY HAVE DESIGN/SAFETY ISSUES WITH ANY OF THEIR VEHICLES - SUDDEN ACCELERATION, STEERING SUSPENSION & BRAKING. IT TOOK ME REPEATED SERVICE VISITS TO GET THEM TO REPLACE THE FRONT STEERING RACK UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. I FEEL MY FUEL FILLER ASSEMBLY AND CHARCOAL CANISTER REPAIR IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE GASOLINE COULD EASILY LEAK OUT DOWN THE TUBE ON GASOLINE OVERFILL AND CAUSE A FIRE IF IT REACHED THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. 20 YRS AGO I HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH A HONDA WHICH WAS REPAIRED UNDER A RECALL AT NO CHARGE. MY MECHANIC JUST FOUND OUT THAT IN 2011, TOYOTA PUT OUT A SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION ON THIS CAR MAKE AND MODEL YEAR, AND OTHER TOYOTAS DUE TO A FAULTY PISTON ASSEMBLY. THEY ONLY COVER THIS REPAIR UP UNTIL 60,000 MILES. THIS IS AN ENGINE DEFECT AND MILEAGE SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. COST TO REPAIR IS $5,500 ACCORDING TO MY TOYOTA DEALER. I DID ANOTHER OIL CHANGE WITH ONLY TWO QUARTS OF OIL LEFT IN THE PAN WHEN IT TAKES 4-1/2 QUARTS. I TOOK MY RAV 4 TO THE DEALER(4-23-2013) I BOUGHT IT FROM AND WITHOUT LOOKING AT IT I WAS TOLD THE OIL RINGS GET STUCK AND I NEED AN ENGINE REPAIR FOR $3,000 PLUS TAX. I HAD THEM CHECK IT OUT AND I GOT A WRITTEN DOCUMENT WITH THE REPAIR THAT IS NEEDED DOCUMENTED. THIS "NEEDS" TO BE A RECALL ITEM. IF A CAR DOING 70MPH HAS AN ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO LOSS OF OIL THEN THE PERSON WILL LOOSE STEERING AND BRAKE CONTROL LEADING TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND MOST LIKELY DEATH. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH AS TO WHY THIS KEEPS HAPPENING, I FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH RAV4'S MODEL YEARS 2006-2008, AND THAT TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW THIS IS A PROBLEM, THEY ARE STATING THAT THE OIL CONSUMPTION IS WITHIN TOYOTA'S ACCEPTABLE LIMITS! HOW CAN THAT BE? A CAR SHOULD NOT GO THROUGH 3 QUARTS OF OIL IN 3 WEEKS! ON MONDAY MORNING TOYOTA SAID THE CAR ARRIVED WITH NO OIL. HOW COULD THIS BE? THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE KOST PARKING LOT, IN MY DRIVEWAY OR ON THE TOW TRUCK BED ( CAN BE VERIFIED BY ALL SOURCES). MY RAV4 HAS BEEN CONSUMING LOTS OF ENGINE OIL LATELY AND I HAVE TO GET THE OIL REFILLED FOR COUPLE OF MONTHS THIS YEAR BEFORE ITS SERVICE IS DUE. ON 10/18/13, THE CHECK ENGINE OIL WARNING LIGHT AGAIN STARTED SO I TOOK IT TO GET THE OIL REFILLED AND THE SERVICE GUY TOLD ME TO BRING IT BACK AFTER A WEEK SO WE CAN CHECK THE OIL LEVEL AGAIN. SO IT TOOK IT BACK ON 10/26/13 AND WAS SURPRISED TO FIND THAT MY RAV4 HAD BURNED I QUART OIL IN JUST 8 DAYS. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I READ SIMILAR REVIEWS IN EDMUNDS WEBSITE REGARDING THIS ENGINE OIL ISSUE WITH RAV4 MODELS. IS THERE ANY SOLUTION? MY WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND I AM THE ONLY OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE. *TR
CONTACTED TOYOTA ABOUT LOW ENGINE OIL AND THEY SAID THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SERVICE REP CALLED IT INTERNAL ENGINE FAILURE AND SEEMED VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS NOT PART OF A RECALL. I EXPECTED ALOT MORE THAN 100000 MILES OUT OF THIS CAR BEFORE A MAJOR REPAIR LIKE THIS. *TR
DRIVING DOWN A FREEWAY WHEN A LOUD CLUNKING SOUND CAME FROM THE ENGINE, HAD TO PULL OVER AND HAD THE CAR TOWED. AND AS IT ENDS UP THE RAV4, WHICH HAD EVERY SINGLE SERVICE ON TIME AND WITHOUT PROBLEMS, HAD SOMEHOW BURNED UP ALL IT'S ENGINE OIL AND CAUSED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OF DAMAGE TO MY ENGINE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE TOYOTA DEALER REFUSE TO EXPLAIN HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN TO A PERFECTLY HEALTHY CAR AND REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS EXACT PROBLEM IN HUNDREDS OF OTHER 2007 RAV4'S. IN ADDITION, THEY FAIL TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS OBVIOUS FAULT OF THEIRS AND CONTINUE TO PUT THEIR "VALUED" CUSTOMERS IN DANGER AS THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I AM BEING TOLD THAT THE ENGINE WAS LEFT WITH ONLY 1/2 QUART OF OIL FROM THE PREVIOUS SERVICE WHICH WAS 4 MOS PRIOR TO THIS WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO BE DESTROYED. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY CHECKED FOR LEAKS AND COMPLETED AN OIL CHANGE. 1500 MILES LATER, THE VEHICLE IS LOW ON OIL AGAIN. REPEATED A COUPLE OF TIMES. VEHICLE IS BURNING OIL, MECHANICS CANNOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS. *TR

I BROUGHT MY RAV4 FOR SERVICE LAST JAN 31, 2013 AT A TOYOTA DEALER HERE IN HAWAII. THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE IS A SIGN OF A LEAK ON THE WATER PUMP AND CHARGING ME $602 JUST FOR PARTS. I DECLINED FOR THE REPAIR. AT HOME, I SAW IN THE INTERNET THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS VEHICLE. AT A MILEAGE OF 55109, I DON'T THINK THIS SHOULD A PROBLEM. WAS TOLD TOYOTA WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR OR PART UNDER THEIR EMISSIONS WARRANTY. TOYOTA IS ATTEMPTING TO BLAME THIS PROBLEM ON CONSUMER ERROR WHEN FILLING THE GAS TANK. HOW IS THE CHARCOAL CANISTER NOT PART OF THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM WHEN IT'S PURPOSE IS TO SERVE AS A FILTER OF GAS/EXHAUST FUMES. TOYOTA IS ONCE AGAIN NOT STANDING BY THEIR WARRANTIES OR PRODUCTS. *TR

THIS MAY HAVE BEEN ACCEPTABLE IN A CAR BUILT IN 1940, BUT IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN A CAR DESIGNED TO GO 5000 MILES BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION CAN LEAD TO EXCESSIVE ENGINE HEAT AND WEAR CAUSING FAILURE AT HIGH SPEED WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. TRANSMISSION DEVELOPED AN ANNOYING WHINE FROM 40 TO 60 MPH. VERY DISTRACTING WHILE DRIVING BECAUSE OF THE HIGH PITCH NOISE IT MAKES INSIDE THE CABIN. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! *TR
VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT NEW AND HAD 148MILES ON IT WHEN DELIVERED AS IT WAS DELIVERED TO ME FROM ANOTHER DEALERSHIP. FOR THE PAST 20,000 MILES IT HAS BEEN USING 3-4 QUARTS OF OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. TOYOTA KNOWS THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES AND HAS A TSB 0094-11 TO FIX THE DESIGN FLAW. THIS "FIX" BASICALLY REBUILDS THE ENGINE WITH NEW PISTONS, RINGS AND CRANKS. CALLED THE DEALER WHEN I SAW THIS TSB AND TOLD THEM I HAD 59923 MILES ON VEHICLE SO I'LL BE OVER THE WARRANTY BY THE TIME I BRING IT IN AND WAS TOLD IT WAS NO PROBLEM. DROPPED OFF VEHICLE WITH 60114 MILES ON IT AND THEY STARTED AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST BY FIRST FILLING THE OIL. IT TOOK 3 1/2 QUARTS JUST TO TOP IT OFF. NEED TO GO BACK IN 1200 MILES TO CONFIRM THAT IT IS USING OIL BUT THEY TOLD ME THE WARRANTY WILL NOT BE VALID AND I WOULD NEED TO PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS OUT OF POCKET. TOYOTA USES THIS ENGINE IN MANY DIFFERENT VEHICLES AND A SEARCH ONLINE FINDS THAT THERE ARE QUITE A FEW PEOPLE WITH THIS PROBLEM BUT TOYOTA WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. *KB

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 40,000.

THE DEALER THEN INFORMED HER THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REPAIR HER VEHICLE AND THAT SHE SHOULD RETRIEVE IT FROM THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 49,411.
THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM THAT HAS EXISTED SINCE I OWNED THE VEHICLE. MORE THEN HALF THE TIME WHEN I STEP DOWN ON THE GAS HARD, MY VEHICLE NEARLY STALLS, SEVERE HESITATION, THEN SLOWLY RECOVERS AND APPLIES POWER. THIS WOULD BE WHEN YOU HAVE TO PASS A CAR ON A TWO LANE ROAD OR MERGE INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC. IT IS HARD TO KNOW IF IT WILL BE THERE WHEN I NEED IT OR IF I WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE ENGINE TO CATCH UP. I HAVE REPORTED IT TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT MULTIPLE TIMES; THEY HAVE TEST DROVE IT, HAD A FACTORY REP. LOOK AT IT AND AT COMPUTER PRINTOUTS. THEY ADMIT THERE IS A PROBLEM BUT DON'T SEEM TO KNOW HOW OR WANT TO FIX IT. ENGINE OIL LEAK OVER SEVERAL WEEKS. UPON OPENING THE OIL FILL CAP, THE REST OF THE OIL CAME OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR. I WAS FORCED TO HAVE IT CARRIED TO THE DEALER BECAUSE OF THAT. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT IT IS V V T I HOSE ON ENGINE BANK 1 THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, THAT TOYOTA KNEW OF THE PROBLEM BUT THEY NEVER RECALLED TO FIX THE CARS, THEY FIXED THEM AS CUSTOMERS BROUGHT THEM IN (ACCORDING TO BULLETIN). IT TOOK ABOUT 10 DAYS TO FIX. A MECHANIC I KNOW WHO SAW THE INVOICE TOLD ME THAT TOYOTA REPLACED ALMOST HALF THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE( REPLACED BANK VTI HOSE, BOTH V V T I GEARS, CAM SHAFTS AND HOUSING A TOTAL OF 31 PARTS. I DID NOT HAVE TO PAY , BUT I WAS VERY UPSET AT TOYOTA FOR KNOWING THAT A PROBLEM EXISTED BUT DID NOT ALERTED CUSTOMERS. *TR

CONSUMER STATES DISSATISFACTION RELATED TO THE REPLACEMENT OF A DEFECTIVE OIL LINE. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED SHE DID NOT EXPERIENCE A FAILURE BUT WANTED THE OIL LINE REPLACED FOR SAFETY REASONS, BECAUSE IT COULD CAUSE CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE AND SHE DRIVES MANY MILES EACH DAY WEEK FOR WORK. WE BOUGHT OUR TOYOTA, A NEW 2007/4430C RAV4 (5-DOOR 4X2 SUV), ON 9/7/07, AND HAVE NOTICED SEVERAL PROBLEMS IN THE OPERATION OF THIS VEHICLE. OUR RAV4 CURRENTLY HAS AROUND 24,000 MILES ON IT, AND THE PROBLEMS HAVE NEITHER INCREASED NOR DECREASED IN FREQUENCY. BECAUSE THESE PROBLEMS ARE INTERMITTENT, OUR DEALER, DUNNING TOYOTA OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN, WAS UNABLE TO REPLICATE WHAT WE EXPERIENCE. HOWEVER, WE BELIEVE THAT DOCUMENTING THIS SITUATION IS IMPORTANT AS PROBLEMS'SOME OF WHICH SOUND SIMILAR TO WHAT WE HAVE EXPERIENCED'ARE CURRENTLY SURFACING ON OTHER TOYOTA VEHICLES. (2) THE GAS PEDAL SOMETIMES DOES NOT SMOOTHLY ENGAGE, AND THE CAR 'JUMPS' AHEAD WHEN THE PEDAL SEEMS TO FINALLY ENGAGE. (3) OCCASIONALLY THE CAR DOES NOT SEEM TO SLOW WHEN THE BRAKE IS APPLIED. IN THE WINTER OF 2008, I WAS TRAVELING AT A LOW SPEED (BEGINNING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP) ON SLICK PAVEMENT WHEN THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME UNEXPECTEDLY STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED THE BRAKE BUT THE CAR DID NOT SEEM TO SLOW DOWN. THE RESULTING COLLISION RESULTED IN $615.63 IN DAMAGE TO OUR VEHICLE. I DO NOT KNOW THE EXACT DATE OF THE ACCIDENT. I BOUGHT THE BRAND NEW 2007 RAV4 LIMITED V6 FROM CHICAGO GROSSINGER TOYOTA 2 AND 1/2 YEARS AGO. THERE WAS SOME BOILING WATER NOISE COMING OUT FROM THE ENGINE AT AROUND 28K MILES. I TOOK THE RAV4 TO THE CGT DEALER FOR REPAIR SINCE IT WAS STILL UNDER THE WARRANTY. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. TOLD ME THAT THE REASON WHY THE ENGINE HAD SOME BOILING WATER NOISE BECAUSE THE CAMSHAFT WAS BENDED. HE LIED! HE DIDN'T EVEN TELL ME THAT THE OIL HOSE WAS THE CAUSE OF THE DAMAGE. THE NOISE PROBLEM WAS FIXED (HOPEFULLY) BUT I DON'T KNOW IF THE ACTUAL PROBLEM IS STILL GOING OR NOT BECAUSE I FOUND THERE WERE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM THAT I HAD ONLINE. MOST COMPLAINTS SAID THAT THE PROBLEM WAS BECAUSE THE OIL PIPE WAS MADE WITH HALF RUBBER/METAL. THE RUBBER PART WILL SOON BE CRACKED DUE TO THE WEATHER OR SOMETHING. I CALLED THE CGT CUSTOMER REP TO VERIFY THIS PROBLEM AND THEN HE TOLD ME THAT MY CAR MIGHT HAVE THAT PROBLEM AND HE WAS AWARE OF THAT SO HE TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD SWITCHED OIL PIPE TO METAL. HE LIED AGAIN! I CHECKED IT AND THE OIL PIPE IS STILL MADE WITH HALF RUBBER AND METAL. HE SEEMS LIKE COVERING SOMETHING. I BELIEVE THIS PROBLEM HAS HAD BEEN EXISTING FOR A LONG TIME BUT TOYOTA NEVER DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE. 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4: ENGINETYPE V6 1) DRIVING CAR ON HIGHWAY AT NIGHT, STOPPED AT LIGHT, SMELLED OIL BURNING THOUGHT SMELL WAS FROM OTHER VEHICLES. CONTINUED TO DRIVE WHEN STOPPED AT NEXT STOP LIGHT SMELLED OIL BURNING, SAW LIGHT TRAILS OF SMOKE AROUND HEAD LIGHTS. WATCHED GAUGES AND GOT THE CAR HOME. 2) SHUT OF ENGINE RAISED HOOD AND REMOVED PLASTIC ENGINE COVER. SAW OIL WAS ALL OVER THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT OF ENGINE NEAR FIRE WALL AND WHEEL ON WELL COVER. HAD WIFE START CAR, SAW OIL SQUIRTING IN A SMALL STREAM FROM A RUBBER HOSE ATTACHED TO METAL PIPE. THE PIPE THE HOSE WAS ATTACHED TO WAS ATTACHED TO ENGINES CYLINDER HEAD NEXT TO FIRE WALL AT THE FRONT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. 3) I HAVE HAD THE CAR SINCE DEC. 2007 WHEN IT WAS BRAND NEW IT NOW HAS 80,000. MILES. I TALKED TO THE LOCAL DEALER ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC FAILURE, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A BULLETIN FOR THIS PROBLEM. I GAVE THE DEALER MY VIN AND MILEAGE, I WAS TOLD MY VIN WAS NOT ON THE LIST AND MY MILES WERE WELL OVER THE VEHICLES WARRANTY LIMIT OF 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD IF I WANTED A QUOTE I WOULD NEED TO GET IT TOWED IN AND THEY WOULD GIVE ME A QUOTE FOR THE WORK. AT THIS TIME BASED ON ALL THE INFORMATION STILL AM INVESTIGATING MY OPTIONS FOR THIS REPAIR TO ATTEMPT TO REDUCE MY COSTS. THE REPAIR OF THIS FAILED OIL LINE ENTAILS THE REMOVAL OF THE COMPLETE FAILED OIL LINE END TO END AND THE INSTALLATION OF A COMPLETE METAL PIPE ASSEMBLY. SO FAR I AM FINDING THIS FAILURE SEEMS TO BE A QUITE COMMON WITH THIS MODEL ENGINE WITH THIS OIL LINE CONFIGURATION. BASED ON THIS FAILURE AND THAT IT IS A KNOW PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA, I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT I'M STUCK WITH ALL THE COSTS. AFTER A DANGEROUS SURGE-AT-STOP PROBLEM, WE TOOK OUR 2007 RAV4 TO OUR DEALER YESTERDAY, BUT SO FAR THEY CLAIM THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. WE TOLD THE DEALER THAT WE DON'T WANT THE CAR BACK UNTIL THEY FIX THIS LIFE-THREATENING CONDITION. YESTERDAY WAS ACTUALLY THE THIRD TIME THAT THIS HAPPENED, AND EACH TIME THE PROBLEM WAS MORE INTENSE THAN THE PRIOR INCIDENT. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, AROUND THREE WEEKS AGO, MY HUSBAND WASN'T SURE IF HE HAD ACCIDENTALLY HIT THE ACCELERATOR, SO HE IGNORED IT. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED, FIVE DAYS AGO, HE WAS MORE AWARE, AND KNEW WHERE HIS FOOT WAS PLACED, AND KNEW FOR SURE THAT THIS WAS AN ENGINE SURGE ENTIRELY UNRELATED TO ANYTHING HE WAS DOING. IT WAS ONLY BECAUSE HE HAD HIS FOOT PLACED FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE THAT HE WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE RAV4 AND PREVENT IT SURGING PAST THE RED LIGHT. YESTERDAY WAS THE WORST INCIDENT, SINCE THE SURGE HAPPENED, AGAIN AT A RED LIGHT, WITH CARS PASSING IN FRONT OF OUR RAV4 (WE WERE FIRST IN LINE) AND WHEN MY HUSBAND JAMMED HIS FOOT HARDER ON THE BRAKE, THE ENGINE SURGED EVEN HARDER, AND LOUDER, AND HE HAD TO REALLY FORCE THE BRAKE PEDAL DOWN. IF OUR DAUGHTER HAD BEEN DRIVING THE RAV4 THERE IS NO DOUBT IN OUR MINDS THAT SHE WOULD HAVE GONE RIGHT INTO THE INTERSECTION, AND EITHER BROADSIDED A VEHICLE, OR BEEN BROADSIDED HERSELF, WITH CATASTROPHIC RESULTS. MY WIFE WAS STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF AN INTERSTATE WHEN OUR TOYOTA 2007 RAV4 V6 HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF AN OIL HOSE WHICH RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF ALMOST ALL THE OIL IN THE ENGINE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. THE 3.5L V6 ENGINE IN THIS VEHICLE IS IDENTICAL TO THE V6 IN THE TOYOTA AVALON WHICH IS EXPERIENCING A VERY LARGE NUMBER OF FAILURES SUCH THAT A TSB WAS ISSUED. THE AVALON STARTED USING THIS ENGINE PRIOR TO THE RAV4. I WAS TOLD BY A PARTS MANAGER THAT THERE ARE SO MANY OF THESE FAILURES THAT OWNERS ARE WAITING 6 WEEKS FOR THE BACKORDERED REPLACEMENT PART AND THAT 2500 PARTS ARE ON NATIONAL BACKORDER. TOYOTA KNOWS THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS WITH THE V6 RAV4 SINCE THE ENGINE IS IDENTICAL BUT REFUSES TO PUT OUT AN ASSOCIATED TSB FOR THE RAV4. THIS FAILURE IS DANGEROUS IN THAT IT CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO LOCK UP ON THE HIGHWAY POTENTIALLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. TOYOTA IS "QUIETLY" REPLACING THE FAILING HOSE WITH A METAL HOSE ONLY AFTER A FAILURE HAS OCCURRED.(A DEFECT ADMISSION OF A DESIGN FLAW). A RECALL IS COMPLETELY WARRANTED FOR THIS DEFECT. TOYOTA IS AWARE THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS HOSE LEAKING AND A TSB EXISTS FOR THE FIX. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO RECALL OR EVEN A MANDATORY INSPECTION OF THIS HOSE AT REGULAR SERVICE INTERVALS. OUR ISSUE WAS A COMPLETE RUPTURE AND IT WOULD HAVE COST US THOUSANDS TO REPAIR ON OUR OWN IF THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY.
