Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 149)
Air Bags →6 issues
Your airbag warning light is on, indicating a potential problem with your airbag system. Toyota has informed you that a safety recall may affect your car, but they cannot repair it until the recall is officially announced. According to Toyota, your airbag could deploy unexpectedly, and they cannot provide a timeline for when the recall will be issued. The repair will likely involve replacing or servicing the airbag system components once the recall becomes available.

Your car's airbags failed to deploy during a serious crash that totaled the vehicle. This is a critical safety failure that should have provided protection during the collision.

You were in a head-on collision at approximately 50 mph that caused severe front-end damage to your vehicle. Your airbag warning light came on indicating deployment, but your steering wheel airbag remained intact and failed to inflate during the crash. You were not injured, but this raises concerns about whether the airbag system functioned as designed. A diagnostic scan and airbag system inspection would be needed to determine why the airbag did not deploy.

Your car's passenger-side airbag has been deemed unsafe by Toyota, and the dealership has advised you not to use the passenger front seat until it's repaired. The dealership says they don't know when replacement parts will be available—potentially months away—leaving you unable to safely seat a fourth adult passenger. Fixing this will require replacing the faulty airbag system with new parts once they become available.

Your Corolla was hit on the passenger side in a crash, but the airbags didn't deploy even though the airbag warning light came on. The dealer couldn't figure out why the airbags failed to activate during the collision. The airbag system will likely need to be diagnosed with specialized diagnostic equipment and may require replacement of the airbag control module or sensors.

You received a recall notice for your 2002 Toyota Corolla's airbags, but the replacement part wasn't available when you tried to get it repaired. You've been waiting longer than a reasonable amount of time for the manufacturer to provide the necessary part and complete the repair. The manufacturer is aware of the delay, and you haven't experienced any airbag failure so far. The fix will likely involve replacing the airbag component once the part becomes available.

Engine →5 issues
Your car is burning through oil rapidly — you need to add 2 quarts every week. You'll notice blue smoke coming from the exhaust when you start it each morning. This indicates oil is leaking past the piston rings into the combustion chamber and being burned off. The fix will likely require removing the engine head and replacing the pistons and rings, which is a major repair job.

Your engine is consuming oil much faster than normal — you need to add about 1 quart every 300 miles to keep it at the proper level. You've also noticed blue smoke coming from the exhaust when you accelerate, which typically indicates oil is burning in the engine. Even though your car has been regularly serviced according to Toyota's schedule, this excessive oil consumption at 120,000 miles suggests internal engine wear or damage. A mechanic will likely need to inspect the engine for worn piston rings, valve seals, or other internal components that may need repair or replacement.

Your engine appears to be burning excessive oil—about 1 quart every 250 miles. The owner believes this is caused by a design flaw in the pistons where there aren't enough oil passages. This excessive oil consumption needs to be diagnosed by a mechanic, as it could indicate piston wear, damaged piston rings, or valve seal issues that are allowing oil to enter the combustion chamber.

Your engine is making a low rumbling sound while driving, and you're noticing a strong exhaust smell inside the car along with burning more oil than normal—you're adding about 5 quarts of oil every 150-200 miles. Your check engine light is on and the car isn't accelerating properly. A mechanic diagnosed a failed head gasket, but the problem came back even after repair.

Your car is experiencing unexpected power loss during acceleration, followed by sudden uncontrolled acceleration that requires heavy braking to slow down. The dealer has replaced the oxygen sensor and catalytic converter, but the problem persists even though diagnostic tests couldn't find an error code. The issue may require further inspection of the fuel system, ignition system, or engine control computer to identify the root cause.

Suspension,wheels →1 issue
While braking at highway speed (60-65 mph) after the car in front of you stopped, your vehicle lost control, spun across all three lanes, and rolled three times on the interstate. You sustained injuries including a sprained ankle, cuts, road rash, and whiplash. You suspect a tire failure may have caused the loss of control, though you're uncertain of the exact cause. The incident totaled your six-month-old car, which has been in impound since April 2002.

Steering →1 issue
Your steering suddenly became very stiff and difficult to turn. The Toyota dealer found a failed steering rack and replaced it for $1,060, but the same problem returned three weeks later. The dealer then diagnosed a corroded and stuck intermediate shaft joint as the underlying cause. This is a dangerous sudden failure that needs investigation.

Tires →1 issue
Your tires are showing exposed belts after only 11 months and about 10,000 miles of normal city driving, even with regular maintenance. This is a safety hazard that requires immediate replacement. You'll need to purchase a new set of four tires.

Suspension →1 issue
When you drive on bumpy roads, you hear a loud clunking noise coming from underneath your car. A mechanic identified this as a strut problem, and there's a recall for this exact issue on your 2002 Toyota Corolla. However, one dealer refused to perform the repair. The fix will involve replacing the worn struts to eliminate the noise and restore proper suspension function.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
Your car is burning through oil at an unusual rate—about one quart every 400 miles—even though the dealer found no leaks and the engine appears clean. This excessive oil consumption creates a safety risk, as running the engine dry at highway speeds could cause the engine to seize and leave you stranded. The issue may be related to how the replacement 1.8L engine was installed, and you'll need to monitor oil levels frequently or have the engine inspected more thoroughly for internal wear or improper seating.

Seats →1 issue
Your driver's seat back frame has broken away from the seat base because the steel support arms that hold it in place have cracked and split. You may notice the seat back won't stay upright when adjusted, or a large piece of the frame protruding from the left side of the seat. The right side arm also shows a crack in the same location, suggesting both arms are made of weak material that's failing. Repairing this will likely require replacing the entire driver's seat assembly or the seat back frame with its steel support arms.

Seat Belts →1 issue
Your front seat belts occasionally lock up and won't pull out any further when you try to fasten them. The belt only releases after you drive the car and apply the brakes. Even after the dealer replaced both front seat belts, the problem persists, and the Toyota dealership says you'll need to pay for diagnostics to identify the underlying cause. This could involve issues with the seat belt retractor mechanism or the vehicle's safety system.
