DASHBOARD MELTING ' I JUST NOTICED MY DASHBOARD MELTING YESTERDAY AND CONTACTED TOYOTA TODAY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT FOR THIS PROBLEM EXPIRED LESS THAN A YEAR AGO, AND THAT THEY WERE SORRY, BUT THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO HELP ME. I KEEP MY CAR IN A PARTIALLY CLIMATE-CONTROLLED GARAGE AND DRIVE ONLY A FEW THOUSAND MILES A YEAR. THEREFORE, MY CAR IS HAVING DELAYED SYMPTOMS OF THE MELTING DASHBOARD PROBLEM. BECAUSE I TOOK EXTRAORDINARY STEPS TO PROTECT MY CAR, I AM BEING EXCLUDED FROM THE WARRANTY PROGRAM. THIS BOILS DOWN TO TWO SAFETY PROBLEMS: 1. TOYOTA CANNOT OR WILL NOT TELL ME THE MATERIAL OF THE DASHBOARD, BUT I SUSPECT IT IS A PETROLEUM-BASED PLASTIC VINYL. THEREFORE, THE OOZING SUBSTANCE IS QUITE POSSIBLY AN ENDOCRINE DISRUPTOR. NO ONE SHOULD NOT BE EXPOSED TO THIS TOXIC SUBSTANCE. THEY REFUSE TO HELP ME REPLACE IT, AND REFUSE TO TELL ME HOW TO CLEAN IT, BUT SHARE MY CONCERNS AND OFFER THEIR SORROW. 2. THE GLARE FROM THE MELTING DASHBOARD IS A DRIVING HAZARD. I GET A TERRIBLE REFLECTION IN MY WINDSHIELD AND CAN EASILY MISTAKE WHAT IT REAL VS A REFLECTION, AND IS WORSE ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS. IT PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD TO OCCUPANTS AND PEDESTRIANS, AND ADVERSELY AFFECTS MY ABILITY TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE IN THE SAFEST MANNER. I HAVE PURCHASED 9 TOYOTAS, YET THIS IS MY 1ST ISSUE AND REQUEST FOR SAFETY REPAIR. I GUESS LOYALTY ONLY GOES ONE WAY. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT MY HEALTH AND SAFETY.
WHILE DRIVING MY 04 TOYOTA SOLARA AT 45MPH THERE WAS A VERY LOUD NOISE THE SUNROOF EXPLODED CAUSING GLASS TO FLY ALL OVER THE INSIDE OF THE CAR, INTO THE STREET, AND HIT THE BACK OF MY TRUNK CHIPPING THE PAINT. THE SCREEN WAS OPEN, BUT THE SUNROOF WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME. IF MY CHILDREN WERE IN THE BACKSEAT AT THE TIME THEY WOULD OF BEEN INJURED BY THE GLASS. THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE ROAD IT WAS A NICE SUNNY DAY WHEN IT HAPPENED. I FIRST CALLED TOYOTA THEY OPENED A CASE AND RESPONDED SAYING AT THIS TIME TOYOTA IS NOT DOING A RECALL ON THIS OR HAS THERE BEEN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST THEM. I SUBMITTED PICTURES TO THEM AND FILED A CASE. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS I WAS SO SHAKEN AFTER THIS HAPPENED AND CAN'T STOP THINKING WHAT COULD OF HAPPENED IF MY KIDS WERE IN THE CAR THAT DAY. TOYOTA NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE SUNROOFS BEFORE THIS HAPPENS TO MORE PEOPLE.
CRACKING AND MELTING DASHBOARD. TOYOTA PUT OUT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO COVER THE REPLACEMENT. THE PROBLEM I HAVE...I RECEIVED THE FIRST LETTER STATING THE PROBLEM, BUT IT STATED A SECOND LETTER WILL BE SENT, WITH NOTIFICATION WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE, I NEVER RECEIVED THE SECOND LETTER. AS TIME WENT BY, I FORGOT ABOUT GOING TO A DEALER RATHER THAN WAIT FOR THE LETTER. A BIG MISTAKE, I LEARNED TODAY DEC 22, 2017, THE DEADLINE WAS MAY 31, 2017. THE PROBLEM DOES EXIST, SO WHY, BECAUSE I NEVER FOLLOWED UP ON A LETTER I NEVER RECEIVED, BE REJECTED. I CALLED TOYOTA AND WAS GIVEN A COMPLAINT # 1712221373, BUT WAS ALSO TOLD, BECAUSE OF THE MISSED DEADLINE, THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I SEEK FURTHER HELP.
I WAS SLOWLY PULLING INTO A PARKING LANE, STARTED TO TURN LEFT TOWARDS A PARKING SPOT WHEN MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE ACCELERATED SUDDENLY AND PRESSING ON THE BRAKE DID LITTLE TO STOP THE CAR. THIS HAPPENED IN A SHOPPING CENTER PARKING LOT. AS A RESULT, TWO OTHER CARS WERE DAMAGED AND THE MY CAMRY WAS TOTALED. THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 148000 MILES ON IT. THE CAR HAD BEEN ROUTINELY MAINTAINED. THE CAR HAD PREVIOUS ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING USING THE CRUISE CONTROL BUT THE PROBLEM HAD NEVER BEEN TRACED DOWN AS TO WHAT CAUSED THIS ISSUE. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE RPM NEEDLE JUMPED FROM LOW RPM TO HIGH RPM. IN ADDITION, WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH HAD COME ON UN-EXPECTEDLY. THESE ISSUES WERE NEVER REPRODUCED WHEN TAKEN TO THE MECHANIC AND THE PROBLEMS NEVER RESOLVED.
DASH HAS COMPLETELY CRACKED AND CONTINUES TO SPLINTER OFF. I HAVE SEEN MANY WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS AS WELL.
IGNITION SWITCH NOT WORKING PROPERLY. KEY CAN BE REMOVED WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING AND IN MOTION, AND THE CAR WILL CONTINUE TO RUN.
I PURCHASED MY CAR NEW AND HAVE DONE ALL THE SERVICING REQUIRED. MY CAR HAS BEEN GARAGED AND I WORK FROM HOME. THE DASHBOARD STARTED CRACKING AND IF YOU SCRATCH IT WITH YOUR FINGERNAIL, IT PEELS OFF! IT HAS PROGRESSIVELY BEEN GETTING WORSE AND I AM FEARING IT IS AFFECTING OTHER PARTS OF THE CAR. IT LITERALLY SEEMS LIKE IT IS FALLING APART. I THINK THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG HERE AND THINK IT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND RECALLED.
CAR ACCELERATED BY ITSELF WHEN PARKING AND WOUND UP ON SIDEWALK. COULD NOT BRAKE. CAR WAS PUT IN PARK WHILE MOVING AND THEN STOPPED WHILE STILL APPLYING BRAKES.
WAS CLEANING REAR WINDOW THIS AFTERNOON AND NOTICED A CRACK IN THE COVER. BARELY TOUCHED IT AND IT CAVED IN. THERE IS CRACK IN THE OTHER COVER AS WELL. SEARCHED ONLINE TO FIND MANY OTHER CAMRY OWNERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT AS NEVER HAD ISSUE IN PRIOR CARS. TOYOTA SHOULD ISSUE RECALL AS CUSTOMER'S SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY THE $600+ FOR REPAIR. *LN
WE OWN A 2004 CAMRY LE. THIS CAR HAD BEEN IN TWO SEPARATE ACCIDENTS - ONE IN 23 DECEMBER 2007 AND 21 AUGUST 2009 WHEREIN THE ACCELERATOR TOOK OVER THE CAR CAUSING ACCIDENTS AND EXTENSIVE HOOD DAMAGES COSTING THE INSURANCE WELL OVER $5,000. "I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER MY CAR" WAS THE ONLY REASON I CAN GIVE FOR THESE TWO INCIDENTS. THESE INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED TO ROMANO TOYOTA ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT MAINTENANCE CANNOT EXPLAIN WHY THESE UNCONTROLLABLE INCIDENTS HAPPENED. IN THE MEANTIME OUR INSURANCE COMPANY DROPPED US AND OUR INSURANCE PREMIUMS HAVE INCREASED. ON THE RECENT WAVE OF REPORTS ON TOYOTA CAMRY FAILURES, ROMANO TOYOTA WAS AGAIN APPROACHED TO HAVE MY CAMRY LE EVALUATED FOR THE SAME FAILURES. WE WERE TOLD THIS TIME THAT MY CAR IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL YEARS. DO WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THERE IS A LOSS OF LIFE BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE WITH MY CAR? THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SPORADICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEARS OF OWNERSHIP. ALTHOUGH BOTH INCIDENTS WERE NOT REPORTED TO THE POLICE, THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAD THEIR REPRESENTATIVES INSPECT THE DAMAGES. *CN
I PURCHASED MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY IN FEB. '04. FROM THE DAY I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT, THE CAR SURGES AS YOU BEGIN TO ACCELERATE. I RETURNED IT FOR REPAIR AND THE TECHNICIANS COULD NOT FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. IT HAS BEEN A CONTINUAL PROBLEM AND STILL OCCURS DAILY. IN DEC. 2004 AS I WAS PARKING MY CAR AT THE HOTEL WHERE I WORK THE CAR SURGED, JUMPED THE CURB AND DROVE INTO A HOTEL ROOM CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING AND THE CAR. TODAY IS 3/23/10 AND ON THE WAY TO WORK THIS MORNING IT SURGED TWICE.
MY SON REPORTED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY HE TOOK HIS FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR TO BEGIN BRAKING, THE CAR/ENGINE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE FORCING HIM TO APPLY FULL FORCE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN. HE ALSO REPORTED THE CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS "SURGING." HE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND EXIT THE HIGHWAY SAFELY. THE NEXT DAY, WE TOOK THE CAR TO NORTH HILLS TOYOTA (PITTSBURGH) WHO REPORTED THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE PROBLEM. NO SURPRISE! HE IS AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER WITH A PERFECT DRIVING RECORD AND WAS TRULY UPSET BY WHAT HAPPENED. HE IS ALSO THE SOLE DRIVER OF THIS VEHICLE, SO HE KNOWS HOW THE CAR DRIVES, ETC. BY THE WAY, WE DO NOT HAVE FLOORMATS ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE OF THE CAR DUE TO THE RECENT REPORTS OF ACCELERATORS BEING WEDGED IN THE FLOORMAT. *TR
ON 09/20/08 I DROVE MY 2004 TOYOTA SOLARA TO A GREEK FESTIVAL ON MOUNTAINVIEW AVENUE IN SANTA ROSA. I WAS DIRECTED TO PARK MY CAR IN THE PARKING FIELD. I ACCELERATED SLIGHTLY TO GO OVER A SMALL BUMP AND THE MOTOR ROARED OUT OF CONTROL. I HAD TO QUICKLY THROW IT INTO ANOTHER GEAR TO KILL THE MOTOR. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR IT SEEMED TO BE OK. IT WAS A VERY FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. ON 9/22/08 I TOOK IT TO THE FREEMAN TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN SANTA ROSA. A REPRESENTATIVE TOOK ME OUT FOR A RIDE IN MY CAR AND WAS UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM WITH MY CAR. THEY DID NOT MAKE OUT A REPORT ON THE INCIDENT. NO ONE AT THE DEALERSHIP SEEMED VERY CONCERNED. *TR

THE ODOMETER READ 3% MORE THAN THE CONSUMER HAD ACTUALLY DRIVING. THIS CAUSED DISCREPANCIES IN SPEED CONTROL, WARRANTY ISSUES AND CAUSED AN OVERAGE OF 1440 MILE IN THE CONSUMERS 48000 MILE LEASE. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD, BY A REPRESENTATIVE, THAT A 10% ERROR VARIANCE WAS ACCEPTABLE FOR THE ODOMETER READINGS. *AK *NM
