EXITED FREEWAY AND HIT BRAKES TO SLOW AND STOP AT TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE MOTOR ACCELERATED, THE BRAKES WERE TOO WEAK TO STOP THE VEHICAL, AND I CRASHED INTO THE STOPPED CAR AT THE TRAFFIIC LIGHT. IT SEEMED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT TURN OFF WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL. THEY FAILED TO TURN THE CRUISE CONTROL OFF.
THE SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE STOPPED MOVING ONE DAY AND ANOTHER DAY IT MOVED ERRATICALLY. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE SHIFTING BECAME REALLY HARD, WOULD TAKE A LOT OF PRESSING OF THE PEDAL TO INCREASE SPEED. FINALLY, IT WOULDN'T EVEN GO ABOVE 20-30MPH ON HIGHWAY NO MATTER WHAT. LATER IT WAS FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR HAS GONE BAD. REPLACING THAT FIXED THE PROBLEM BUT STILL THE CAR HESITATES BEFORE SHIFTING, ESPECIALLY IN LOW GEARS (<550MPH).

WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SHIFTED TO A LOWER GEAR; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. FEBRUARY 1, 2017, TURNING INTO A PARKING LOT AT 700 E. MAIN ST., GRASS VALLEY, CA, TURNED RIGHT INTO A PARKING SPACE AND AS THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED, THE CAR SURGED FORWARD, JUMPING A CEMENT CURB, THE FENDER GRAZING A TREE ON THE LEFT, COMING TO AN ABRUPT STOP WHEN IT HIT THE CEMENT BASE OF A LIGHT POLE. FLUIDS WERE LEAKING FROM BENEATH THE CAR, THE FRONT BUMPER WAS HANGING OFF, THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR CAUGHT AS IT WAS OPENED. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP. THIS WAS THE SECOND INCIDENT, WITH THE SAME EVENT OCCURRING 2 YEARS PRIOR BUT WITH LESS SURGE AND NO CAR BODY DAMAGE. BOTH INCIDENTS REPORTED TO TOYOTA IMMEDIATELY. TOYOTA INVESTIGATED AND BOTH TIMES FOUND NO CAUSE FOR THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. SINCE THE CAR HIT A STATIONARY OBJECT I AM FOUND "AT FAULT" BY MY INSURANCE, WHICH IS ANNOYING. I DID NOT HAVE THE CAR REPAIRED SINCE IT IS CLEARLY UNSAFE. TODAY, MAY 1, 2017, A SALVAGE COMPANY PICKED UP THE CAR TO BE USED SOLELY FOR PARTS. THE CAR IS IN OTHERWISE EXCELLENT CONDITION, BUT I COULD NOT PLACE ANOTHER HUMAN BEING IN JEOPARDY BY REPAIRING AND SELLING IT, NOR COULD I EVER FEEL SAFE AGAIN DRIVING THE CAR.
CAR WAS STALLING, ENGINE CODE REVEALED THROTTLE STUCK IN CLOSED POSITION. THROTTLE BODY WAS GUMMED UP WITH CARBON, THROTTLE BODY WAS CLEANED WITH FOAMING THROTTLE BODY CLEANING AGENT DESIGNED FOR CLEANING INTAKE PARTS. COMPUTER CANNOT UNDERSTAND NEW THROTTLE POSITION AFTER CLEANING, ENGINE SURGES FROM ABOUT 800 RPM TO ABOUT 3000 RPM IN IDLE. WHEN PLACED IN GEAR, CAR ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN TO WELL OVER 40 MPH IN IDLE. CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION. MUST RIDE BRAKES TO CONTROL SPEED. CAR IS UNDRIVABLE IN ITS CURRENT STATE.
I WAS SLOWLY PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR SURGED WITHOUT WARNING. IT ACCELERATED SO FAST THAT I WENT THROUGH THE BUSHES ACROSS THE ADJACENT SIDEWALK AND SLAMMED INTO A LIGHT POLE TOTALING MY 2004 CAMRY.
SLOWLY MAKING A RIGHT TURN TO PARK IN A WIDE OPEN PARKING SPACE IN A PARKING GARAGE. CAR LUNGED FORWARD HITTING A WALL IN FRONT OF THE PARKING SPACE AND DAMAGING THE FRONT END OF THE CAR. NO BRAKE PROBLEMS OR PREVIOUS ACCELERATION PROBLEMS
UNINTENDED (UNEXPLAINED) ACCELERATION: SLOWLY APPROACHED RED LIGHT AT INTERSECTION. AS I EASED ON BRAKE TO STOP BEHIND LINE OF TRAFFIC, ENGINE SURGED. I PUSHED BRAKE TO FLOOR AND PUSHED ON EMERGENCY BRAKE WITH OTHER FOOT WHILE SHIFTING INTO PARK. MY NEXT STEP WOULD HAVE BEEN TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL, BUT CAR STOPPED A FEW INCHES BEHIND THE CAR AHEAD. THIS WAS ALL IN THE SPACE OF PERHAPS 5 SECONDS. FORTUNATELY, I WAS NOT GOING FAST OR ON A WET/ICY ROAD. LIGHT CHANGED TO GREEN AND I SHIFTED INTO DRIVE. CAR FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. DEALER HAD CAR A FULL DAY, WENT THROUGH TOYOTA HQ INTERVIEW AND TESTS, THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPEAT THE UA, STATED "VEHICLE IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED" BUT WOULD NOT TELL ME THE CAR WAS SAFE OR UNSAFE. I BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW IN 2004, LOVED THE WAY IT HANDLED FOR 75K MILES, BUT NOW I DO NOT TRUST IT. I WONDER IF TOYOTA'S TESTS EVER ALLOW THEM TO RECREATE THE UA, BUT THEY COULD/WOULD NOT TELL ME THAT WHEN I TALKED WITH THE CASE MANAGER AT HQ. MY CAR WAS NEVER ON THE UA RECALL LIST. BECAUSE I DID NOT CRASH, THE COMPUTER WOULD NOT HAVE RECORDED THE ACCELERATOR OR BRAKE USE TO PROVE THE UA HAPPENED! SEEMS LIKE A CATCH 22. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR AND WILL GIVE FULL DISCLOSURE IF I TRADE IT IN OR SELL IT. I ASKED AND WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA HQ CASE MANAGER THAT THIS INCIDENT WILL BE AVAILABLE IF THE CAR IS CHECKED ON CARFAX. WHILE THE DEALER WAS ALWAYS SENDING ME REQUESTS TO TRADE IN MY CAR AS IT WOULD SELL WELL, I'M SURE THE VALUE HAS DROPPED CONSIDERABLY NOW. I AM NOT PLEASED WITH THE OUTCOME AT ALL, ONLY GRATEFUL THAT NO ONE WAS HURT OR KILLED IN THIS INCIDENT.

THE VEHICLE STALLS WHEN GAS IS APPLIED OR IT JERKS WHEN GOING FROM LOW SPEEDS TO HIGH SPEEDS, AFTER GAS IS APPLIED. THE VEHICLE ALSO HESITATES TO ACCELERATE AFTER FULL STOPS. I WENT TO A TOYOTA CAMRY DEALER, SANSONE TOYOTA LOCATED AT 90-100 ROUTE 1 NORTH IN AVENEL, NJ 07001. THEY FOUND THAT THE CAR IS SHIFTING ABNORMALLY AND SO THEY UPDATED CALIBRATION SOFTWARE IN THE VEHICLE. AFTER SERVICE AT SANSONE TOYOTA, THE CAR STILL JERKS WHEN SWITCHING FROM LOW SPEEDS (LIKE 20 MPH) TO HIGHER SPEEDS (LIKE 60 MPH). SOMETIMES IT JERKS VERY VIOLENTLY AND IT ALWAYS HESITATES WHEN GAS IS APPLIED, AFTER FULL STOPS (LIKE AT A STOP SIGN OR A RED LIGHT). IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE SOMETIMES ACCELERATES, A LITTLE, WHEN I APPLY BREAKS WITH THE INTEND TO SLOW DOWN. A COUPLE MECHANICS I WENT TO SAY THAT THE VEHICLE MAY NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION, BUT I HAVE READ COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE THAT A LOT OF TOYOTA VEHICLES MAY HAVE ACCELERATION PROBLEMS. SOME 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA VEHICLES HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR SPEED CONTROL PROBLEMS. I DON'T WAN TO INVEST INTO A TRANSMISSION IF THE CAR WILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I NEED TO KNOW IF MY 2004 TOYOTA SOLARA SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL RECALL.
ON 9/20/15 WHILE REVERSING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AT THE SOUTH WINDSOR PUBLIC LIBRARY, I DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR LIGHTLY AND THE CAR SURGED BACKWARDS INTO VERY TIGHT CIRCLES. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND PRESSED ON THE BRAKES AND TRIED TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK. AFTER ALMOST 2 ROTATIONS THE CAR HIT ONE CURB AND THEN ANOTHER AND AFTER THAT I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK, ALL THE WHILE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. MY VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND I CONTACTED MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THE INSURANCE COMPANY REVIEWED MY CLAIM AND HAS ISSUED ME A CHECK TO HAVE THE VEHICLE FRONT END AND UNDERCARRIAGE DAMAGES REPAIRED. I HAVE ASKED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IF THE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE AND THEY REFERRED ME TO TOYOTA NATIONAL. TOYOTA SENT OUT AN INDEPENDENT EVALUATOR WHO EVALUATED THE VEHICLE AND THEN SENT ME A FLASH DRIVE WITH THE EVENT DATA RECORDER RESULTS. HOWEVER NO SUMMARY REPORT OR NARRATIVE WAS PROVIDED, SO I DO NOT KNOW IF THE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE. I CALLED TOYOTA BACK AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT IS UP TO ME TO FIND SOMEONE TO INTERPRET THE RESULTS.
I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGH SPEED. THERE WAS A RED LIGHT SO I TRIED TO HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL. BUT BY DOING THAT I THE CAR HAD A SUDDEN ACCELERATE AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND THE BRAKE POWER IS SUPER WEAK. I WAS LUCKY THAT THE CAR STOPPED RIGHT BEHIND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME SO NO ACCIDENT HAPPENED. I DRIVE MY CAR TO A LOCAL BRAKE SHOP, THEY INSPECTED THE WHOLE SYSTEM AND TELL ME THAT THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG THERE. IT WAS REALLY SCARY TO FEEL THAT YOUR CAR IS NOT CONTROLLED BY YOURSELF.
I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF PARKING MY CAR IN A PARKING GARAGE WHEN IT SUDDENLY STARTED ACCELERATING AND HIT THE CONCRETE WALL OF THE GARAGE. THE CAR WAS DRIVABLE, BUT AFTER GETTING IT INSPECTED, IT WAS FOUND TO HAVE SIGNIFICANT FRAME DAMAGE AND WAS TOTALED BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY.
I WENT TO A LOCAL STORE TO SHOP. I WAS ATTEMPTING TO PARK IN THE STORE LOT, SAW A SPACE CLOSE TO THE FRONT OF THE STORE. IT KEPT GOING LIKE SOMEONE ELSE HAD CONTROL OF THE CAR! I COULDN'T STOP IT AND IT RAN INTO A CAR THAT WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF THE SPACE. IT PUSHED THE OTHER CAR COMPLETELY OUT OF THE PARKING SPOT AND RAMMED HER CAR IN THE FRONT AREA. WE BOTH SUFFERED VEHICLE DAMAGE AND I WAS CHARGED. THERE WAS SMOKE COMING OUT FROM UNDER MY CAR AND AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO STOP MY RUNAWAY CAR, MY FOOT SLIPPED ONTO THE ACCELERATOR. I THOUGHT MAYBE MY BRAKES HAD GIVEN OUT BUT THE OFFICER SAID THE BRAKES WERE NOT BAD. THERE WERE SKID MARKS SHOWING I TRIED TO STOP AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT HOME, VERY SLOWLY. I WAS SO SCARED!! I REMEMBER SEEING A SEGMENT ON TV ABOUT TOYOTA HAVING PROBLEMS REGARDING SUDDEN ACCELERATION IN SOME OF THEIR CARS. *TR

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED AS SHE PULLED INTO HER DRIVEWAY, THOUGH A SECURITY GATE, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND HIT A STONE POST IN FRONT OF HER HOUSE. THE IMPACT SEVERELY DAMAGED THE LEFT FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AND ALSO CHIPPED OUT SEVERAL PIECES OF THE STONE FROM THE POST. *JB

THROTTLE BODY FAILURE, ENGINE SHUTS DOWN, WILL RESTART IN LIMP MODE. CORRODED DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY. NEW PART ON ORDER FROM TOYOTA. $900 REPAIR. THIS ALSO HAPPENED IN 2007 AN $850 REPAIR. I CALLED TOYOTA IN 2007 AND AGAIN THIS TIME. TOYOTA REFUSES TO PROVIDE NEW THROTTLE BODY OR PAY FOR REPAIR. I HAD SLOWED DOWN TO TURN INTO SIDE ROAD, FOOT WAS OFF GAS AND IT ACCELERATED. I IMMEDIATELY PUT ON BRAKES AND IT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. THIS IS ABOUT THE 3RD TIME IT HAS HAPPENED. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED FAST AND I THOUGHT IT WAS ME. THE NEXT TIME SAME THING SO I HAVE BEEN AWARE TO WATCH AND NOTICE. I STARTED MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY LE IN MY DRIVEWAY. AT THE TIME OF IGNITION, THE ENGINE CHUGGED THEN IDLED AS USUAL, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. I PUT THE VEHICLE INTO RESERVE AND ROLLED BACK ABOUT 20 FEET INTO THE STREET, THEN PUT THE VEHICLE INTO DRIVE. I STEPPED ONTO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND NOTHING HAPPENED. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO IDLE WHILE IN THE DRIVE GEAR, HOWEVER, IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE DESPITE ME PRESSING THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND WAITED APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES, THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS NO LONGER ILLUMINATED AND WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PUT INTO DRIVE THE ACCELERATOR WORKED PROPERLY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY AND WAS TOLD ABOUT 2 CODES IN MY COMPUTER: P2112 - THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL SYSTEM - STUCK CLOSED, AND P2102 - THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUIT LOW (SUGGESTING THE THROTTLE BODY BE REPLACED). I CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP IN FARMINGTON, MI AT WHICH THEY REPORTED THROTTLE BODY ISSUES WERE A KNOWN AND COMMON PROBLEM THAT THEY GET CALLS ABOUT FREQUENTLY, BUT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE VEHICLE REGARDING THIS ISSUE AT THIS TIME. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I WAS ON A SIDE STREET NEAR MY HOME WHEN THIS OCCURRED, BUT AM CONCERNED THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN WHILE DRIVING (AS I HAVE READ IN MANY SAFETY COMPLAINTS ON THE VEHICLE SAFETY WEBSITE). *TR

I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND SAID TO MY WIFE (SHE WAS ON THE PASSENGER SEAT), "WHAT'S GOING ON THIS CAR?" AT THE SAME TIME I WAS PLANNING TO BACK IT OUT. 3. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DRIVERS SIDE DOORS WERE DAMAGED. THE VEHICLE GRAZED THE CONCRETE BASE OF A LAMPPOST IN ORDER TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH A PARKED VEHICLE. SATURDAY AFTERNOON 19 NOV 2011, THE ACCELERATOR ON MY 2004 4-CYLINDER CAMRY BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE -- INEXPLICABLY SLOWING TO A CRAWL AND/OR SURGING FORWARD SEEMINGLY INDEPENDENT OF HOW HARD I DEPRESSED THE GAS PEDAL. I BARELY GOT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WITHOUT BEING HIT FROM BEHIND OR SMASHING INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR HAD DIED, AND REPLACED IT AT A COST IN EXCESS OF $600!!! I'VE SEEN REPORTS THAT THIS IS RELATIVELY COMMON IN THIS "FLY-BY-WIRE" DESIGN AND AM VERY CONCERNED THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED THIS MODEL TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. ANOTHER TOYOTA ACCELERATOR PROBLEM I WAS A GREAT BELIEVER IN TOYOTA'S RELIABILITY REPUTATION UNTIL 6/3/2011 WHEN MY WIFE CALLED FROM THE SIDE OF A ROAD TO SAY THAT THE GAS PEDAL DIDN'T WORK. LUCKILY, BEFORE SHE HAD PULLED OUT INTO THE TRAFFIC LANE THE ONCOMING CAR HAD ALREADY STOPPED TO TURN INTO THE ROAD SHE WAS LEAVING; OTHERWISE SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN T-BONED. SHOP DIAGNOSTICS INDICATED FAILURE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR (APPS). THE CAR IS A 2004 V-6 CAMRY WITH 140,000 MILES ON IT. WHEN CONTACTED ABOUT THE PROBLEM, TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS IN CALIFORNIA DENIED CULPABILITY. THE APPS IS AN ELECTRONIC GADGET WHICH REPLACES THE OLD CABLE/PULLEY GAS PEDAL LINKAGE BETWEEN THE GAS PEDAL AND THE FUEL INJECTORS OR CARBURETOR(S). ITS PURPOSE IS TO IMPROVE EMISSIONS CONTROL. THERE IS NO DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE TO TEST ITS REMAINING LIFE. THE OLD CABLE/PULLEY SYSTEM COULD BE CHECKED VISUALLY AND BY TOUCH AND BE REPLACED RATHER CHEAPLY IF NEED BE. APPS FAILURE RESULTS IN THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY REVERTING TO IDLE SPEED. IF IT FAILS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT HIGH SPEED, THERE WILL BE AN INSTANTANEOUS LOSS OF SPEED AND POWER. THE PERSON BEHIND YOU WILL HAVE NO WARNING AND YOU WILL PROBABLY BE REAR-ENDED. IF IT FAILS DURING ACCELERATION TO CROSS TRAFFIC OR MERGE INTO TRAFFIC YOU WILL PROBABLY BE HIT FROM THE SIDE. CLEARLY THE APPS TRADES OFF VEHICLE SAFETY FOR IMPROVED EMISSIONS CONTROL. IF THE OLD CABLE/PULLEY WERE STILL IN PLACE AS A FAIL-SAFE MEASURE, THEN APPS FAILURE WOULD NOT PRESENT A SAFETY HAZARD. I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE LESS THAN 30 DAYS FROM THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT FROM A CERTIFIED USED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP (STONE MOUNTAIN TOYOTA). MY CAR SPUN OUT OF CONTROL AS I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR TO PULL OUT OF A STORE PARKING LOT. I WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE CAR BY BRAKING AND ENDED UP ROLLING OVER AN EMBANKMENT AND ON TO RAILROAD TRACKS. I WAS WEARING MY SAFETY BELT AT THE TIME. I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE CAR AND AWAY FROM IT AS I FEARED IT WAS GOING TO BLOW UP. I HAD NO IDEA OF WHAT WENT WRONG AS IT ACCELERATED SO FAST. OBVIOUSLY, I WAS TERRIFIED AND REMAIN EMOTIONALLY AND PHYSICALLY DAMAGED FROM THIS EVENT. I WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE ER VIA AMBULANCE AND WAS EVALUATED FOR INJURIES. MY MAIN INJURIES WERE GENERAL BODY, HEAD, NECK, AND BACK PAIN. SUBSEQUENTLY, A LUMBAR FRACTURE WAS FOUND YEARS LATER ON A SCAN FOR ANOTHER MEDICAL ISSUE. I STILL SUFFER FROM LOW BACK PAIN AND THE EVENT HAUNTS ME. ESPECIALLY SINCE I TOLD THE POLICE, AMBULANCE WORKERS, INSURANCE COMPANY, AND THE MANAGERS AT THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. NO ONE INVESTIGATED THE ACCIDENT FURTHER AS IF I WAS NOT MAKING ANY SENSE. I ALSO MISSED A FEW DAYS OF WORK AND WAGES BECAUSE I AM AN RN AND COULDN'T PERFORM MY JOB DUE TO THE PAIN. THE THIRD INCIDENT HAPPENED WHEN THE CONSUMER WAS PROCEEDING UP A DRIVEWAY TO A HOSPITAL. AS SHE WAS SITTING WAITING TO PROCEED WITH HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE ALL OF A SUDDEN LURCHED FORWARD. ON JULY 5 2008, I WAS DRIVING MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH 67,000 MILES ON IT ON I95 IN BREVARD CO. FL. AS I ACCELERATED A LITTLE TO PASS INTO THE LEFT LANE, MY CAR TOOK OFF AND PROCEEDED TO GO FASTER EVEN THOUGH I HAD TAKEN MY FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR. AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS, MY ENGINE DIED. I MANAGED TO PULL THE CAR OFF THE SHOULDER. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, I FINALLY GOT THE CAR STARTED AGAIN AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. LUCKILY THERE WAS AN EXIT CLOSE BY AND I SLOWLY DROVE MY CAR OFF I95 AND STRAIGHT TO MIKE ERDMAN TOYOTA IN MERRITT ISLAND. THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE THROTTLE BODY. THEY TOLD ME I WAS "LUCKY" THAT MY CAR CHOSE TO SHUT OFF AS A LADY IN MERRITT ISLAND HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO HER BUT HER CAR DIDN'T STOP UNTIL IT RAN INTO A BANK! MY TOTAL BILL, PARTS AND LABOR WERE $1048.26 PLUS ANOTHER $99.64 FOR THE RENTAL CAR FOR A GRAND TOTAL OF $1147.90. AFTER THIS HAPPENED, I WENT ONTO THE TOYOTA WEBSITE AND FILED A COMPLAINT AS I DON'T THINK A CAR WITH THIS LOW MILEAGE SHOULD HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO IT. I BELIEVE THE CAR WAS VIBRATING WHEN THIS SOUND OCCURRED. I PUT MY RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND MOVED THE GEAR SELECTOR TO THE PARK POSITION. WITHIN ABOUT 3 SECONDS THE ENGINE RACED SO HIGH--AS IF THE CAR WAS TRAVELING 120 MILES +. I HAVE NEVER HEARD AN ENGINE ACCELERATE AS RAPIDLY AND AS HIGH AS THIS. IT WAS AS IF ROCKET FUEL WAS SUDDENLY ADDED TO THE FUEL LINE. IF THIS VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE, I WOULD HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO STOP. MY RELATIVE IS PROFICIENT IN BOTH COMPUTERS AND CARS. HE SUGGESTED THAT THERE COULD BE SEVERAL REASONS FOR THIS PROBLEM INCLUDING CORROSION ON COMPUTER PARTS, IC CHIPS NOT SEATED PROPERLY, PROBLEMS WITH THE WIRING HARNESS, AND THE LAST SUGGESTION, THAT THE ECM (CAR COMPUTER) GAVE THE WRONG COMMAND TO OPEN UP THE THROTTLE BODY, WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO RACE. AFTER I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND BACK ON, THE CAR WORKED NORMAL--MY RELATIVE SAID THAT THE ECM COULD HAVE RESET ITSELF. EVEN IF TOYOTA COULD CLAIM THAT THE PROBLEM IS IN THE GAS PEDAL, ITS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT THERE IS A SENSOR BY GAS PEDAL (WIRES ATTACHED) WHICH I UNDERSTAND WOULD TELL THE ECM WHERE ITS [PEDAL] POSITION IS. SINCE THERE IS NO MECHANICAL LINKAGE (CABLE) THAT CONNECTS TO THE THROTTLE BODY--THE ACCELERATOR WOULD HAVE TO BE CONTROLLED ELECTRONICALLY. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 49,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 10,000.

TOYOTA HAS RECALLED NUMEROUS OTHER YEAR MODELS WITH SIMILAR COMPLAINTS BUT HAS FAILED TO RECALL THE 2004 YEAR MODEL. *JB
I OWN A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. I HAVE HAD TWO ACCIDENTS IN IT. BOTH TIMES THE CAR FAILED TO BRAKE BUT ACCELERATED INSTEAD. NO ONE BELIEVED ME THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDDLE STUCK INSTEAD OF BRAKING. MY INSURANCE PAID FOR REPAIR BOTH TIMES (EXCEPT FOR THE $500 DEDUCTIBLES). MY HUSBAND HAD JUST PULLED HIS 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY INTO A SCHOOL PARKING LOT AT A SLOW RATE OF SPEED. HE STOPPED WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE, AND SHIFTED INTO REVERSE AS HE WAS GOING TO BACK INTO A PARKING SPACE. SUDDENLY, THE ACCELERATOR SURGED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED WITHOUT WARNING AND HE HIT THE BACK OF THE SCHOOL BUILDING AT A GREAT RATE OF FORCE. THE ENGINE STOPPED BUT THE AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE SCHOOL BUILDING ($19,000) AND TO HIS VEHICLE ($9000.) CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO AUTO BODY DEALERSHIP. THIS WAS THE FIRST INCIDENT THAT THE CAR'S ACCELERATOR SURGED. AUTO BODY SHOP REPAIRED THE BODY OF THE CAR, BUT NO REPAIR TO ACCELERATOR AT ALL. WE HAD NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY THE CAR ACCELERATED AT SUCH A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. NOW THAT WE HAVE BECOME AWARE OF ALL THE OTHER TOYOTAS THAT HAVE HAD ACCELERATION FAILURES, WE ARE NOW FILING THIS COMPLAINT. THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE SERIOUS, AS CHILDREN WERE COMING IN AND OUT OF THE BUILDING FROM A SPORTS EVENT. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS HURT. VEHICLE SUDDENLY EXPERIENCED A SURGE IN ACCELERATION. *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE PROBLEM HAPPENED WHEN THE GAS PEDAL WAS APPLIED HARD. *JB
WHILE MY WIFE AND I WERE AT A COMPLETE STOP IN A LINE OF TRAFFIC, OUR ELEVEN MONTH-OLD CAMRY LE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY AND WITHOUT WARNING WHILE MY FOOT WAS SQUARELY AND FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. WITHIN A FEW SECONDS: A) THE CAR VIOLENTLY LURCHED FORWARD, AND I INSTINCTIVELY PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKE TO KEEP FROM PLOWING INTO THE LINE OF VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME; B) WE HEARD THE ENGINE ACCELERATING; AND, C) I CHECKED THE TACHOMETER AND OBSERVED IT STEADILY INCREASING FROM A NORMAL IDLE SPEED TO ALMOST THE MAXIMUM. I MAINTAINED CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND PREVENTED THE ENGINE SPEED FROM CONTINUING TO ITS PEAK BY QUICKLY SHIFTING THE CAR INTO PARK AND TURNING IT OFF. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 20-30 SECONDS I RESTARTED THE CAR, AND THE IDLE WAS ONCE AGAIN NORMAL. I DROVE THE CAR TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, APPROXIMATELY 3 BLOCKS AWAY. THE CAR HAS NOW BEEN IN THE POSSESSION OF THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR OVER TWO MONTHS, AND THEIR MECHANICS HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE EVENT OR FIND ANY RECORD OF THE INCIDENT IN THE ON-BOARD COMPUTER.*AK

WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. AS A RESULT THE VEHICLE COLLIDED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE. THE CAUSE HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED. I WAS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC ON IH-35 IN AUSTIN DUE TO AN ACCIDENT AHEAD. I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO MOVE TO AN EXIT LANE AND AFTER MOVING TO THAT LANE, NOTICED A VEHICLE COMING TOWARD ME AT HIGH SPEED. MY WAY WAS CLEAR TO ACCELERATE AND I DID SO, PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR ABOUT 1/2 THE WAY DOWN. NOTHING HAPPENED AND I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR THE REMAINDER TO THE FLOOR. AFTER A SHORT TIME, THE ENGINE FINALLY ACCELERATED. THREE DAYS LATER, ON DEC. 7, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAD HAPPENED. AFTER EXAMINING THE CAR, THE DEALER CALLED TO EXPLAIN THAT THEY HAD CHECKED THE CAR OVER AND EVERTHING WAS FINE. HE FURTHER EXPLAINED THAT THE 2004 CAMRY WAS EQUIPPED WITH A "DRIVE-BY-WIRE" ACCELERATOR. NO ONE WAS INJURED, NO DAMAGE WAS DONE, BUT I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS CAR WILL NOT RESPOND QUICKLY IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. NOR DO I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS AN ISOLATED SITUATION. WE HAD DRIVEN A DEMONSTRATOR, A 4 CYLINDER CAMRY, ABOUT SIX MONTHS BEFORE WE PURCHASED OURS. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AND PRESSED HARD ON THE ACCELERATOR TO GET IT TO MOVE UP AN ENTRANCE RAMP AND IT ALSO DID NOT RESPOND. AT THAT TIME, I DIDN'T PLACE ANY SIGNIFICANCE TO THE CAR NOT RESPONDING, THINKING MY WIFE WASN'T ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE A QUICKLY AS SHE INSISTED. *AK

THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND DROVE IT TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC WAS NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *JB

THIS COMPLAINT IS REGARDING A PROBLEM WITH ACCELERATION THAT I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING WITH MY 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY V6. AFTER APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE ENGINE HESITATES FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS BEFORE RESPONDING ABRUPTLY. I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO, BUT THE ACCELERATION TROUBLE DID NOT BEGIN UNTIL AFTER I HAD BEEN DRIVING IT FOR ABOUT THREE MONTHS. THE SPEED REGISTERS MUCH FASTER THAN ACTUAL ROAD SPEED. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW WHAT ACTUAL SPEED THE VEHICLE IS TRAVLLING.*AK
THIS OCCURS ON A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH A 3.0L V6 AND A 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. ON OCCASION WHEN SLOWING FROM A SPEED OF 20 MPH OR MORE, THE DRIVER PRESSES THE ACCELERATOR AND CAR HESITATES AND STUMBLES. BECAUSE OF NO RESPONSE, THE DRIVER WILL FLOOR THE ACCELERATOR, THERE WILL BE A 1-2 SECOND DELAY AND THEN THE ENGINE WILL RACE TO 5000 RPM AND THE CAR WILL TAKE OFF. DEALER HAS LOOKED AT THE CAR TWICE AND SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. TOYOTA AND THE DEALER STATE THAT THE CAR IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED AND THIS DELAY IS NORMAL FOR THIS CAR. CONSUMER WAS PARKING THE VEHICLE WHEN IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES, BUT THE VEHICLE JUST KEPT GOING ,CAUSING PROPERTY DAMAGE. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERS. OWNER DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE DONE.
