I BOUGHT A USED 199 CAMRY TWO WEEKS AGO. THE FIRST WEEK I NOTICED A PROBLEM WITH THE PASSENGER WINDOW. IT WOULD NOT ROLL UP OR DOWN AFTER HAVING ROLLED IN DOWN AND UP SEVEREAL TIMES. I MENTIONED TO MY BROTHER THAT I HAD A PROBELM WITH MY CAMRY AND BEFORE I COULD EVEN STATE THE PROBLEM HE ASKED IF IT WAS A 1999 CAMRY AND IF I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE WINDOW ROLLING UP AND DOWN. APPARENTLY HIS MOTHER HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM -- BUT JUST TURNED IT IN AT THE END OF HER LEASE. THE DEALER SAYS THAT IT IS PROBABLY THE REGULATOR. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM ALTHOUGH THERE IS NOT RECALL ON THIS. DEALER SAYS IT WILL COST $400. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM IN THE WINTER ( I LIVE IN WISCONSIN). THERE IS ALSO A CONSIDERABLE SAFETY AND SECURITY CONCERN. I AM NOT SURE WHETHER I WILL RETURN THE CAR OR GET IT REPAIRED.

PASSENGER WINDOW CAME OFF TRACK AGAIN FIXED BY MECHANIC 1/2 DEALER PRICE. BOTH REAR WINDOW MOTORS FAILED AND REPLACED AT COST OF OVER $400. EACH. TOYOTA SUPERCEDED THE ORIGINAL PART WITH A NEW ONE. APPARENTLY A KNOWN DEFECT WITH NO RECALL. PASSENGER WINDOW CAME OFF TRACK ONCE AGAIN. NEXT CAR MAY NOT BE TOYOTA. *NLM

RE: STRUTS 3 SERVICE CENTERS, INCLUDING ANTWERPEN, CHECKED. ALL 3 AGREE ON RR STRUT AND MOUNT. THE OTHER TWO ADDED THAT THE OTHER STRUTS WERE LEAKING. ANTWERPEN SAYS THAT'S "NORMAL" FOR TOYOTA. HOWEVER, A CHECK AT THE SERVICE CENTER OF 2 OTHER TOYOTA'S REVEALED NO LEAKS. AFTER CUSTOMER CALLED A "WISE ASS" BY TOYOTA REP, EFFORTS TO SPEAK TO MANAGERS REVEALED THEM UNAVAILABLE FOR THE ENTIRE DAY (THIS AT 8:30 A.M.) RE: POWER WINDOW. WHEN IT WAS FIRST REPORTED, THE WINDOW BECAME OPERABLE BEFORE I COULD GET IT INTO THE SHOP. IN AUG. 2002 I KEPT THE MOTOR RUNNING AND DROVE DIRECTLY THERE. ANTWERPEN SAID IT WAS THE POWER MOTOR AND THAT THEY WOULD ORDER THE PART. ALTHOUGH I HAVE CALLED SEVRERAL TIMES AND MENTIONED IT AGAIN DURING THIS INCIDENT, THAT HAS NOT YET "COME IN" FROM TOYOTA IT'S NOW 4 MONTHS LATER. DT

WHY DOESN'T THE GOVERNMENT ORDER A RECALL. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MY WARRENTY IS OVER? THERE IS A REAL DESIGN DEFECT WITH THESE CARS, SO WHY ISN'T SOMEONE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS? WINDSHIELD WAS SCRATCHED WHEN BOUGHT. DEALER TRY TO POLISH OUT BUT COULDN'T SO REPLACED WINDSHIELD WITH OEM GLASS. REPLACED GLASS HAS EXTREME DISTORTION AND WAVINESS WHEN LOOK OUT TOWARDS REARVIEW MIRROR AND PASSENGER SIDE. TOOK BACK TO DEALER AND THEY ORDERED NEW WINDSHIELD. HAD SAME DISTORTION. DEALER ORDERED MORE WINDSHIELDS AND HAD SAME DISTORTIONS. CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE. NOW CUSTOMER SERVICE AND AREA REP TELLING ME ALL TOYOTA CAMRYS HAVE THIS DISTORTION IN GLASS AND IS CONSIDERED A "COMMON ITEM" INSTEAD OF A DEFECT. HAVE CHECKED AFTERMARKET GLASS AND MOST SEEMS TO HAVE SOME DISTORTIONS TO A VARYING DEGREE. THIS DISTORTION IS NOT JUST AT THE EDGE OF THE WINDSHIELD AND IS DISTRACTING WHEN DRIVING AND COULD POSSIBLY AFFECT SAFETY. IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM IN NEW VEHICLES? MY PREVIOUS VEHICLES DID NOT HAVE THIS DISTORTION. GLASS TECHNICIAN CALLS IT "CROSS GRAIN DISTORTION". *AK
