While turning a corner with light brake pressure, your car suddenly accelerated on its own without you pressing the gas pedal. Even pressing both feet hard on the brake didn't slow it down, and the car jumped a curb, hit a stop sign, and nearly hit electrical towers and lawn equipment before the engine suddenly died and stopped the car. Toyota's inspection found no mechanical problem, but you're now afraid to drive it. This type of unintended acceleration issue has been reported in other 1996 models. Resolving this may require a thorough diagnostic of the fuel injection system, throttle controls, and engine computer.

FUEL SYSTEM: FOR ABOUT THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF, CERTAIN MORNINGS MY CAR WOULDN\\'T START BY SIMPLY TURNING THE IGNITION; I HAD TO TRY IT THE \\"OLD FASHIONED\\" WAY AND DEPRESS THE GAS PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES PRIOR TO TURNING THE IGNITION KEY. POWER WINDOW: THE DRIVER SIDE POWER WINDOW MOTOR SOUNDS LIKE IT IS DYING; IT TAKES QUITE A LONG TIME FOR THE WINDOW TO OPEN AND CLOSE. OTHER: THE DRIVER SIDE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE JUST BROKE OFF IN MY HAND FOUR (4) WEEKS AGO!!! PLEASE BEAR IN MIND THAT THIS CAR HAS LESS THAN 29,000 MILES AND IS VERY WELL MAINTAINED. SOMETHING WHICH HAS OCCURRED OVER THE LAST YEAR OR SO IS QUITE DANGEROUS AND I NEED TO POINT THIS OUT BECAUSE I, NOR ANYONE I HAVE SPOKEN TO HAS EVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING. THE BLACK WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY (WHICH ATTACHES THE WINDSHIELD WIPER TO THE MOTOR), FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON, THE BLACK PAINT HAS "WORN AWAY", EXPOSING A BRIGHT SILVER METAL, WHICH REFLECTS THE SUN DIRECTLY INTO MY EYES. IT IS QUITE DANGEROUS. SINCE I DON'T DO A LOT OF DRIVING AND ALWAYS WEAR SUNGLASSES ON SUNNY DAYS, THEY HAS HELPED ME SOMEWHAT. HOWEVER, RECENTLY I WAS DRIVING ON A CLOUDY DAY WHEN THE SUN DID IN FACT COME OUT WHILE I WAS WITHOUT SUNGLASSES. THIS PROVED TO BE MOST DANGEROUS AS I MANAGED TO AVOID AT LEAST ONE ACCIDENT DUE TO THIS CONDITION..
ABOUT TEN MINUTES AFTER TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF THE FUEL PUMP RELAY CONTINUED TO RUN. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO BE CONSUMED BY FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED BUT NO ONE WAS INJURED BY THE INCIDENT. THE MANUFACTURER NOR THE DEALER HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. *NLM
THE IDLE SPEED CONTROL VALVES ON TWO 1996 TOYOTA CAMRY'S SOLD IN CALIFORNIA, FAIL EVERY 20,000 TO 30,000 MILES, AND REQUIRE REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $425.00 PER REPLACEMENT. THIS IS NOT NORMAL WEAR IN OTHER CARS SOLID IN CALIFORNIA. THERE HAVE BEEN THREE FAILURES PER CAR. *NLM

CONSUMER WAS AT GAS STATION TO FILL HER VEHICLE, AS SOON AS SHE OPENED GAS TANK FLAMES BURST OUT. VERY LITTLE FUEL WAS LEFT IN TANK , FIRE BURNED OUT QUICKLY. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALER, WHO TOLD HER CAR WAS FINE. STATIC HAD CAUSED FIRE. ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF.*AK

CAR DOES NOT TURN OVER AT FIRST START OF THE DAY. DEALERSHIP (WESTCHESTER TOYOTA, NY) STATES FUEL INJECTORS NEED TO BE CLEANED. DEALERSHIP PROCEEDED AND CLEANED THE INJECTOR'S YET THE CAR STILL DOES NOT TURN OVER. *AK

NOTICED STARTING PROBLEM, THEN NONE OF THE ELECTRICAL DEVICES WORKING, THEN WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED UP TO 25MPH AND DOWN TO 10MPH. *AK
