NHTSA Campaign: 23V754000
Component: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2024 Crosstrek, Impreza, 2023-2024 Forester, and 2023 WRX vehicles. The front driveshaft assemblies' outer race may develop cracks and break.
Risk: A broken driveshaft can cause a loss of drive power while driving or vehicle rollaway when the vehicle is in park without the parking brake engaged. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the left and right front driveshafts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 8, 2024. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRP-23.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 65)
Unknown Or Other →4 issues
Your 2023 Forester has developed multiple issues before 30,000 miles: rusty brake pads, a failed wheel bearing, and a faulty tire pressure sensor. Most concerning, a greasy film is forming on the inside of your windshield that turns milky and blocks visibility in cold weather; the dealership says it's from an AC leak causing condensation, but you believe it's something else with potential health risks. The dealer may need to inspect the AC system for leaks and determine the source of the windshield film, then address the root cause and clean the glass.

Your rear passenger-side window suddenly shattered without warning while driving on the highway, spraying tempered glass into the cargo area and passenger footwell. You didn't see or hear anything strike the vehicle, and there's no visible damage to the exterior or interior. This type of spontaneous failure can be startling to drivers and poses a serious injury risk, especially if passengers had been seated nearby. The repair will likely involve replacing the rear passenger window assembly.

Your left front tire has developed a puncture or air leak on the driver's side. This will cause the tire to lose air pressure over time, potentially affecting handling and fuel economy. You'll likely need to either patch or replace the tire, depending on the size and location of the puncture.

Lane Departure →2 issues
Your EyeSight camera (the system that helps detect lane departures) randomly turns off and on while you're driving. This has been happening consistently over several months and appears to be an ongoing issue that was also reported on older Foresters from 2014-2021. The fix will likely involve inspecting the camera connections, cleaning the camera lens, or replacing the camera unit itself.

Your car's safety features, including blind spot warning, suddenly stopped working while driving. The dealership found an error code related to fuel vapor leaks, which can disable safety features, though your gas cap was properly secured and a smoke test found no leaks. The issue resolved after a code reset, but you experienced a similar problem again over a year later, raising concerns about an underlying defect.

Air Bags →1 issue
Your Forester's passenger seat air bag may not activate when you sit in it, even though the system works correctly for heavier passengers. Two dealers have confirmed this issue happens consistently — the air bag detection light stays off when you're seated, but turns on when heavier people sit in the same seat. The problem appears to be with the seat's weight detection sensor that tells the air bag system whether to arm itself.

Service Brakes, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your car's Automatic Emergency Braking system has engaged multiple times when there were no obstacles in the road, including while driving straight at 25 MPH, on a curved off-ramp, and while making a U-turn. These unexpected brake engagements are creating dangerous situations and could cause accidents, especially at highway speeds. The system needs to be diagnosed to determine why it's triggering incorrectly, which may involve sensor inspection, software updates, or replacement of the forward collision detection components.

Electrical System, unknown Or Other, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your forward collision avoidance system (EyeSight) failed to warn you or apply automatic braking when a car turned in front of you at an intersection, forcing you to swerve to avoid a collision. The system has been problematic since you bought the car, requiring multiple dealership visits, recalibrations, software updates, and even a complete replacement—but it continues to malfunction and drop offline several times daily. A repair may involve additional software updates, camera recalibration, or further diagnostic work, though Subaru has not yet provided a permanent solution.

Engine →1 issue
Your car caught fire shortly after an oil change at the dealership. Oil leaked from the oil filter onto the hot catalytic converter, which ignited the fuel. The owner reports that the oil filter may have been installed upside down, making leaks more likely. This issue has reportedly occurred in multiple vehicles.

Steering →1 issue
While driving at 15-20 MPH and attempting to turn right into the right lane, your steering wheel didn't respond and instead pulled the vehicle to the left, causing you to cross the lane divider and hit another vehicle. The airbags did not deploy. The dealer later found that several warning lights had been triggered in the vehicle's system, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired at that time. The crash resulted in injuries to both you and your front passenger, and your vehicle required body damage repairs.

Air Bags, seats, unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your driver and passenger seats are collapsing unevenly, causing you to sink into them and feel the internal hardware. You're hearing intermittent dinging sounds while driving, which the dealership says is related to airbag sensors in the seats. The seat covers are splitting significantly, and because of the collapsing seats, the airbag timing and deployment during an accident could be affected, or airbags might deploy unexpectedly. Even after the passenger seat foam and cover were replaced once, the problem has gotten worse.

Forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your brakes suddenly locked up while driving at 45 mph on an empty road with no other vehicles nearby, which could have caused a collision if another car had been behind you. There was no warning before this happened, and you found nothing on the road that might have triggered it. This safety concern requires immediate diagnosis to determine why your forward collision avoidance system engaged unexpectedly.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your vehicle caught fire that started at the battery wiring, which is suspected to have been installed incorrectly during assembly at the factory. The fire caused the vehicle to be a total loss. This is a serious manufacturing defect that created a fire hazard.

Fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car developed a major oil leak before 60,000 miles, causing the oil level to drop critically low. The warning light didn't activate even though you were nearly out of oil, which could have caused severe engine damage if not caught in time. The dealer had to replace multiple components including the oil filter and related caps to stop the leak.

Exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your 2023 Forester's factory headlights have a dark band across the middle of the beam that's designed to reduce glare for oncoming drivers, but this design significantly reduces visibility on dark, winding roads and makes nighttime driving unsafe. The dealer says these projector-style headlights can't be swapped for traditional ones, though Subaru suggests aftermarket headlights might be an option when available. You may need to explore aftermarket headlight solutions or additional lighting options like upgraded fog lights to improve visibility.

Fuel/propulsion System,lane Departure,forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your check engine light came on along with warnings that your safety features (Eyesight, lane departure warning, and RAB) have been disabled. The dealership diagnosed a leak in the evaporative emissions system and says the leak detection module needs to be replaced, but the part is back-ordered until mid-March 2025. You've also noticed the car is sluggish when accelerating and burning through gas faster than normal. Even though the dealership temporarily cleared the lights, they came back on after a few days.

Tires →1 issue
The owner has reported a tire-related issue with their 2023 Subaru Forester but did not provide details in the summary. Without additional information about the specific problem (such as uneven wear, punctures, noise, or vibration), the exact nature of the concern cannot be determined. The owner may need to contact NHTSA directly or provide more details about what they're experiencing with their tires.

Visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your windshield developed a crack during extreme temperature changes, going from the mid-60s to below freezing within hours, with no prior impact or damage. The crack appeared and grew over several days with multiple temperature swings. You may need to have the windshield replaced, as this appears to be a manufacturing defect rather than impact-related damage.

Electrical System →1 issue
Your car's battery is being drained by the vehicle's electrical system even when the car is off. This could leave you unable to start your vehicle if it happens repeatedly. The issue may require diagnosing which electrical component is drawing power when it shouldn't and repairing or replacing that part.
