2017 Subaru Forester Airbags Problems

My 2017 Subaru Forester [Touring] (VIN: [VIN]) has a recurring front passenger airbag deactivation problem even when an adult is seated and belted. The console shows “Passenger Airbag OFF” with an adult occupant. The seatbelt chime recognizes a passenger, but the airbag remains OFF.

There is intermittent failure of the passenger air bag occupancy detection system (ODS). This shows up as aporadic display of the passenger air bag failure code in the car, and became more frequent until the code rained on. This was previously an issue, but a couple years ago I performed the Subaru issued recall related to this sensor and it went away for a time.

Airbag light came on intermittently at first, then constantly in 2023. It was determined to be a defective ODS in the passenger seat, and was repaired at Subaru’s expense “Goodwill” on November 2 2023. Again in 2025, the SRS alert appeared intermittently at first, then continuously that the system needed service.

In 2020 my ODS wireharness had been replaced. I'm now having the same issue in 2025 with the ODS system. I had the ODS recall fixed but the dealership is telling me it is the ODS seat mat not the harness that needs repair and that is not covered under the recall.

My srs airbag system is off for the drivers. It went off for no reason. I went to Subaru but they said it would be $3000 and an undetermined wait for the part to come in.

Lately, Airbag warning light comes on intermittently often. Sierra subaru would not fix without charging me for inspection for $240 and then cost of rapair. Also cruise control is malfunctioning where it gets disengaged near the vehicle in front where I have to apply brake hard to avoid serious accident.

Vehicle was struck by a dump truck traveling approximately 50 MPH that ran a red light. Impact was on the front passenger side. Although, the collision was violent and there was substantial frontend damage, no airbags deployed.

I want to bring a widespread safety issue up that is not being resolved by the manufacturer. I have a 2017 Subaru Forester with a faulty ODS sensor. This is a known issue to Subaru and there are bulletins issued on this topic (WUM-98 and 17-19-24).

I just noticed today that the air bag warning light was illuminated. There was an adult in the passenger seat and the car indicated that the passenger air bag was OFF. This vehicle had a previous air bag recall applied that was to correct these same symptoms.

On 8/14/25, a diagnostic fee was charged by White Bear Lake Subaru in Vadnais Heights, MN for an issue that was later confirmed to be part of an open Occupant Detection System (ODS) recall on a 2017 Subaru Forester. When the recall repair was completed on 8/27/25, the dealership refused to refund the diagnostic fee, saying reimbursement had to come from Subaru of America.

The WUM-98 recall fix did not address the problem with the front passenger occupancy detection system. We, and many other Subaru Forester owners are continuing to experience problems post recall repair with the SRS Airbag light on, indicating error code B1760 "Occupant Detection Sensor Mat" failure.

Passenger air bag light on dash coming on, started off dinging even with no one sitting in the passenger seat. Now the Air bag light stays on constantly. I was told by the Subaru dealership near me that they found a B1650 in the system for occupant detection malfunction.

I have a problem with the recall issue that the service dealership said they completed but now its showing alert and it seems to be wasn't fixed good. Please help because I dont understand why it would have been completed when its an problem now. My vehicle had the WUM98 Safety recall completed on March 09, 2020. In July 2022, the SRS system started giving error messages that the system needed to be checked. It seemed to reset when the vehicle was turned off and restarted.

I understand the NHTSA is investigating possible passenger airbag defects in 2016-2018 subaru foresters. The passenger airbag sensor in our 2017 forester is not working on a consistent basis and has been defective since we bought the car.. My wife needs a seat cushion for her bad back and many times, when my wife sits in the seat, the air bag stays in the "off" status.

Purchased our 2017 subaru forester on 09/24/16. On 09/05/17 the warning light on dashboard came on warning that the passenger airbags were not functioning. This happened when a passenger was in the passenger seat and the car was on a highway.

Within the last two months while driving with my wife in the passenger seat the passenger air bag system has disengaged several times and we receive three warning lights. A red srs light in the lower dash. A white "I" on a red background next to the trip odometer letter, and the srs indicator in the middle of the dash next to the time indicator comes on sayinf the srs is off.

The passenger airbag periodically turns off without notice. The airbag indicator light shows that there is an issue and subaru has contacted us about the issue. When we talked to the dealer they said it was a known interference issue related to cell phones and other devices and that if it continues to happen we should bring it in to have the passenger seat replaced.

Our starlink system is constantly alerting the dealership of the problem.we have brought the car in for service 3 times.they tell us they cant find the problem.although the warning light indicates that the problem still exists. My air bag (srs) warning light has come on repeatedly since the car was new. It was mentioned at the 5000 mile service, but no action was taken. I august 2017 it began staying on most of the time.

Passenger airbag light comes on saying off while passenger is in the car

I have been in contact with Michael Hohl Subaru for the last 1 1/2 years or more regarding airbag turning off while seats are occupied. I have continuously been told that the part to fix it is on eternal back order. Contacted to Shalana at Subaru of America and was told there is nothing they can do.

Airbag light for passenger seat comes on while seat is occupied by a 200+ lbs passenger.

I am locating in vilseck, germany on dod us army military official order from may 2018 to present. I am schedule to pcs from germany back to san antonio, texas. With this recall I will have problem of shipping my car back home and I can't get it fix due to subaru, germany is not available to get it done due to lacks of service contact with subaru usa.

Recall notice via us mail, also read about another recall that will be coming, I believe the boxer engine.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 subaru forester. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 19v701000 (air bags). The contact called parkway subaru of jacksonville (910-968-0758, located at 2400 n marine blvd, jacksonville, nc 28546) and was informed that the parts were not available.

The airbag fault light comes on steadily.

The passenger air-bag is malfunctioning as the gel layer in the seat is malfunctioning.

My sms manual airbag warning came on and told me to refer to the manual. I saw my passenger airbag was no longer on, even though I had a passenger in the front seat belted in. I noticed this seems to be a common issue, one that is being investigated.

While traveling at any speed, the passenger air bag will switch to off. An error message will appear indicating that the srs airbag system needs checked. Issues appears to be located with the occupant detection system in the passenger seat.

Passenger airbag sensor indicated off, when it should've been on. There was an adult in the passenger seat. The indicator was on after starting the car.

Airbag light stays on stating that the airbags are not functioning on the passenger side. Was told that this was my fault due to damage to the sensor? Only normal use, no damage, rarely anyone sitting there.

Passenger airbag turns off randomly.

At random times the front passenger airbag would turn off even though it was occupied by an adult. This happened while the vehicle was in motion on the highway.

Takata recall notice was received

29 june wife and I are on the highway driving when the passenger airbag light goes to off and the fault code appears on the heads up display tell us to take into service immediately. Well we car off and we don't hear anything back for a few days. We called them back on the 5th of july because of the holliday.
