The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while at a stoplight, her vehicle would intermittently stall without warning. The contact had a friend inspect her vehicle, who immediately smelled an oil odor emitting from the vehicle. The contact's friend checked under her hood and discovered that oil had leaked out of her transmission and into her side spark plugs. The contact called the dealer where she had previously serviced her vehicle and was given an estimate for a diagnostic test. The contact declined the diagnostic test and called Darcars Nissan of College Park (9330 Baltimore Ave, College Park, MD 20740) and was given an appointment. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and the contact was given a case number. The vehicle had yet to be repaired or diagnosed. The failure mileage was approximately 176,000.

The contact's sister owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while her sister was driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine revved loudly but the vehicle would not accelerate above 20 MPH. Additionally, the vehicle overheated, causing the antifreeze to leak. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, but the mechanic could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, and the dealer informed the contact's sister that there was a recall for the continuously variable transmission (CVT) that was unrepaired. The dealer referred the contact's sister to West Herr Nissan of Orchard Park (3580 Southwestern Blvd, Orchard Park, NY 14127). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

The CVT transmission CONTINUES to "FAIL"; the transmission goes into "fail-safe mode" when the driving long distances. The engine/transmission will decelerate right in the middle of the roadway while traveling at highway speeds. This is dangerous and WILL cost someone their life.

Loss of power after 2-3 hours of driving, speed dropped down from 70mph to 45mph and then continue to drop to 20-25mph on the highway. Pull over on the should waited for about an hour and then it regained power for about an hour till once going uphill it loss power again. This is very dangerous to loose power like this on a high traffic interstate highway.

My transmission went out on me while I tried to accelerate at a busy intersection. There was no check the engine light or maintenance required light that popped up but just wouldn't go nowhere. I had to call 911 in order to direct traffic on top of calling a tow truck. I had to wait 45 on both and directed traffic myself from not getting hurt or prevent someone from hitting me and my car. The transmission was already replaced once in 2016 now its needing to be replaced again with a price tag of about $4000 which is wrong when I took car of the car very well by doing what was required of the maintenance and the part that they put on through the warrenty in 2016 only is good for 1 year which is not fair for the car owner knowing that this is an ongoing problem with nissan. I feel like if it's under 5 years or 100,000 after a part have been replace they should pay for it because thats the price for another car

THE DRIVER PULLED OFF THE ROADWAY, RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, AND THE VEHICLE DROVE AS DESIGNED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS WORKING AS DESIGNED. THE LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE CONTACT STATED THE FAILURE WAS SIMILAR TO TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN TSB-10052883-6508 (POWER TRAIN). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000.

THIS VEHICLE WILL NOT OPERATE IF IT'S DRIVEN FOR MORE THAN 45 MINUTES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE POWER TRAIN GOES INTO A NEUTRAL MODE. IT THEN REQUIRES A PULL OVER ONTO A FREEWAY TO ALLOW IT TO COOL DOWN FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES BEFORE THE VEHICLE WILL WORK. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS OUTSIDE. WHEN DRIVING AT SPEEDS LOWER THAN 50 MILES PER HOUR IT DOES NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM. PER THE NISSAN MECHANICS THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE CVT AND THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT IS TO COMPLETELY REPLACE THE CVT. WE HAVE TRIED A TRANSMISSION COOLER BUT THAT DOES NOT WORK. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT REQUIRES THE VEHICLE TO BE STOPPED AND TURNED OFF FOR 20 MINUTES WHICH CAN BE A BIG SAFETY PROBLEM AS IT WOULD REQUIRE SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY OR, IF ABLE, SITTING IN THE VEHICLE IN AN UNSAFE NEIGHBORHOOD.

THE CVT TRANSMISSION HAS GIVEN ME MAJOR PROBLEMS AFTER DRIVING FOR 60+ MILES. UP UNTIL THEN IT DOES FINE JUST AS IT HAS ALWAYS DONE AROUND TOWN DRIVING. AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR AND HALF OF DRIVING THE VEHICLES STOPS ALLOWING YOU TO GO OVER 40 MPH AND I FOUND THAT THIS IS CALLED 'LIMP MODE' WHICH IS TO PROTECT THE TRANSMISSION. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE CAR IS NOT EVEN GETTING OVER HEATED WHATSOEVER AT ALL. I HAD THE TRANSMISSION SERVICED BY NISSAN AND THOUGHT THIS WOULD FIX THE ISSUE BUT NO SUCH LUCK. WHEN YOU HAVE A CAR THAT YOU GOT BRAND NEW AND HAVE TAKEN CARE OF IT AND LOW MILEAGE YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DRIVE SOMEWHERE THAT IS MORE THAN AN HOUR AWAY. MY CAR IS UNABLE TO BE TAKEN ON ANY ROAD TRIP WHATSOEVER. I HAVE HAD MYSELF IN SOME UNFORTUNATE SITUATIONS DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. I HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED AND WAS TOLD IT WAS GOOD TO GO ON A ROAD TRIP THE NEXT DAY AS I HAD EXPLAINED THE SITUATION TO THEM AND WAS ASSURED THAT I COULD SAFELY MAKE THE TRIP. LOW AND BEHOLD SIXTY MILES OUT OF TOWN I COULD ONLY GO 40MPH ON A HIGHWAY WITH A 75 SPEED LIMIT. NISSAN DEALERSHIP WAS NOT ANYWHERE NEAR ME. I WAS 100 MILES AWAY FROM ANYWHERE I COULD GET HELP WHICH IS ALL NISSAN TOLD ME TO DO WAS BRING IT IN TO A DEALERSHIP! I DID JUST THAT BEFORE MY TRIP TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND IT WASN'T FIXED. NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR SINCE I PURCHASED IT. HAD TO REPLACE ALL TIRE SENSORS, SPEED SENSORS, COILS, FRONT PASSENGER TIRE ROD, THE CTV TRANSMISSION, AND THE TRUNK LEAKS INTO THE TRUNK AND THE TAIL LIGHT'S. I HAVE REPAIRED ALL THESE THINGS OUT OF MY OWN POCKET.I HAVE BEEN STRANDED SEVERAL TIMES, I HAVE ALMOST BEEN HIT, AND HAVE HAD THE CAR TOWED. THE DASH HAS BECOME STICKY AND EVERYTHING STICKS TO IT. IT PRODUCES A GLARE ON THE WONDOW WHICH MAKES IT HARD TO SEE.THE ENGINE EXPERIENCES LOSS OF POWER AND NO MECHANIC CAN PINPOINT THE PROBLEM. I DO NOT DRIVE IT MUCH SINCE I HAVE PURCHASED IT. THIS CAR SHOULD BE A LEMON OR RECALLED. THE PROBLEMS KEEP COMING.

THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR SOME TIME NOW, BUT NOW I HAVE A SECOND ALTIMA THAT IS HAVING VERY SIMILAR ISSUES. AFTER SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY FOR A HOUR, THE CAR RETURNS TO NORMAL. THIS CAN NOT BE A NORMAL PROBLEM, I HAVE SEARCHED AND FOUND THAT A NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD VERY SIMILAR ISSUES AND IN FACT I RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THAT 2014-2018 NISSANS WHERE HAVING ACCELERATION ISSUES. ( I HAVE ATTACHED THE LETTER) I HAVE 2 CARS NOW THAT HAVE THE SAME ISSUE AND I CAN NOT AFFORD TO FIX THEM, ESPECIALLY IF I AM NOT 100% SURE WHAT THE CORRECTION IS. THE DASHBOARD IS LITERALLY MELTING CAUSING A BLINDING GLARE WHEN THE SUN (DURING THE DAY) OR OTHER HEADLIGHTS (DURING THE NIGHT OR RAIN) HIT IT...IT CREATES A BLINDING GLARE MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE. THE LAST TIME I REPLACED IT WAS 3 YEARS AGO IN 2016. MOST OF MY MILEAGE IS HWY MILES. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE REGARDING THE CRAPPY CVT TRANSMISSION IN THE ALTIMA. THE DEALER IS PUTTING IN MY 3RD TRANSMISSION TODAY AND ONLY GUARANTEEING A 1 YEAR / 12000 MILE WARRANTY. THIS DOES NOT SOUND LIKE THEY ARE BACKING THEIR PRODUCT. THE NEXT INCIDENT WAS AFTER I EXITED OFF OF THE INTERSTATE AND STOPPED AT THE STOP SIGN ONCE I BEGIN TO ACCELERATE MY CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET CAUSING A CAR COMING AROUND THE CURVE TO QUICKLY EXIT ONTO THE INTERSTATE TO KEEP FROM HITTING ME. WHEN I EXPLAINED ALL OF THIS TO NISSAN THEY ALREADY KNEW ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND I SAID WHY WASN'T THIS SOMETHING YOU SEND OUT TO CONSUMERS BECAUSE IF YOU ALREADY KNOW THEN THIS ISN'T THE FIRST INCIDENT. AT THE TIME I REPORTED THIS I HAD 119,876 MILES ON MY CAR THE REP PROCEEDED TO TELL ME I WAS PAST THE EXTENDED WARRANTY I SAID WHAT EXTENDED WARRANTY I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THIS AND NEVER RECEIVED ANYTHING IN REFERENCE TO THIS. NEEDLESS TO SAY NISSAN NEVER FOLLOWED BACK UP WITH ME AND I REACHED OUT TO THEM AGAIN RECENTLY ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE AND TOLD THEM NOBODY EVER FOLLOWED UP AND I WAS ALMOST HIT ONCE AGAIN DUE TO LOSING POWER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE. TOOK THE CAR IN TO A NISSAN SERVICE DEPART EXPLAINED THE ISSUE ONCE AGAIN THEY SAID OH THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN ON THE ENGINE BUT THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TRANSMISSION BUT ASSURED ME THIS WAS THE ISSUE NEEDLESS TO SAY TWO DAYS LATER AND $390 LATER THE PROBLEM STILL ISN'T FIXED. DRIVING HOME FROM WORK LATE AT NIGHT, JUST GOT OFF THE FREEWAY AND THE CAR MADE A LOUD SOUND AND THEN STOPPED MOVING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THEN CAME ON. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS PRIOR TO THIS EVENT THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. FORTUNATELY, THIS INCIDENT DID NOT OCCUR 5 MINUTES EARLIER WHILE I WAS STILL ON THE FREEWAY. THE CAR HAD BEEN INTO THE DEALER FOR NEW BRAKES AND CHANGE IN TRANSMISSION FLUID 3 WEEKS PRIOR TO THIS EVENT. AFTER THE EVENT THE DEALER ALLEGEDLY FOUND METAL BELT PIECES IN THE CVT OIL PAN. THE COST OF THE REPAIR WOULD BE $4600, IN EXCESS OF THE BLUE BOOK VALUE OF THE CAR. THE CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED AT NISSAN DEALERS SINCE THE TIME IT WAS PURCHASED. IT WAS PURCHASED WITH THE EXPECTATION FROM THE SALES STAFF THAT THE CAR WOULD GO AT LEAST 200,000 MILES. CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 124000 MILES. NISSAN AGREED TO PAY 50% OF THE COST OF THE NEW TRANSMISSION. HOWEVER, I CHOSE NOT TO REPAIR THE CAR AS THE REMAINING AMOUNT IS COST PROHIBITIVE AND I HAVE LITTLE CONFIDENCE IN NISSAN PRODUCTS AND THEIR SERVICE. IT APPEARS TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS ARE COMMON IN THE ALTIMA AND NISSAN DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT OR TRY TO CORRECT THE ISSUES. THEN ONCE I AM DRIVING UP A FAIRLY STEEP HILL THE CAR WILL NOT DOWNSHIFT TO ACCOUNT FOR THE INCLINE. THE CAR SLOWS DOWN FROM 65 MPH TO LOW SPEEDS (E.G. 40 MPH) AND THE ENGINE WILL NOT GO ABOVE 2000 RPM. THE CAR DOES NOT COME OUT OF OVERDRIVE (6TH GEAR). ATTEMPTS AT PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR ALL THE WAY DOWN OR MANUALLY SHIFTING TO A LOWER GEAR HAS NO EFFECT. THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE CAR TO SHIFT NORMALLY AGAIN ONCE THIS HAPPENS IS TO PULL OVER AND TURN OFF THE CAR AND RESTART IT. THIS PROBABLY INDICATES A REBOOT ON THE TRANSMISSION'S COMPUTER IS NEEDED. I RESEARCHING PROBLEMS FOR THE 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA CVT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS I AM NOT ALONE WITH SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND LACK OF DEALERSHIP REMEDY TO THE PROBLEM. I TALKED TO A NISSAN FACTORY TRAINED TECH. AND ASK HIM IF THIS PROBLEM IS WHY NISSAN TIGHTENED UP THE TRANSMISSIONS STARTING IN 2013 AND HE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT WAS THE REASON. SLIPPAGE IS THE ONLY REASON THAT THE EPA MPG ESTIMATES FOR 2013-2015 VEHICLES ARE 7 MPG GREATER THAN PREVIOUS MODELS. NISSANS ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM IS TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THE TRANSMISSION FROM 60000 MILES TO 120000 MILES. THAT IS FINE AND DANDY, BUT THAT DOES NOT REMOVE THE DANGER OF A REAR END COLLISION THAT CAN KILL OR SEVERELY INJURE FAMILIES WHEN THE CAR DOES NOT CONSISTENTLY ACCELERATE WHEN THE DRIVER HAS A REASONABLE EXPECTATION IT WILL. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE DEALER THAT THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE TRANSMISSION HAD RECENTLY CHANGED AND THERE WAS AN EXCESS OF TRANSMISSION FLUID IN THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER REMOVED ONE HALF QUART OF THE TRANSMISSION FLUID, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO RECUR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 41,550 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42,800.

S10 APPROPRIATE HANDLING- COPY OF A LETTER TO NISSAN RE ACCELERATION PROBLEMS WITH HIS 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5 SL *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN SHE MERGED ONTO A MAJOR HIGHWAY, SHE APPLIED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, AND SOON DISCOVERED THE VEHICLE WAS DECREASING IN SPEED, INSTEAD OF INCREASING. THE CONSUMER STOPPED TO A REPAIR SHOP, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY PROBLEMS. AFTER APPROXIMATELY AN HOUR AND A HALF OF DRIVING AT A CONSTANT SPEED OF 60 MPH, THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM RETURNED. GOING UP HILLS, WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND THE TOP SPEED OF GOING UP A HILL WAS 45 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER AND THE NEXT DAY THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE AND FIX THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEMS. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HER LOCAL DEALER, AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE A PROBLEM AS WELL. *JB

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING FOR 150 MILES, HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE TACOMETER DID NOT DISPLAY A READING AND THE VEHICLE RAPIDLY DECELERATED. AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AT DUPLICATING THE FAILURE AFTER FIVE ATTEMPTS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 85,325.

VEHICLE TRANSMISSION FAILED. FROM A STAND STILL AT A STOP LIGHT, THE VEHICLE SHOOK AND THEN JUMPED FORWARD 2 FEET AS IF BEING REAR ENDED FROM BEHIND. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I STEPPED ON THE GAS AND THE VEHICLE STARTED TO ACCELERATE. THEN THE VEHICLE MADE GRINDING NOISES, HESITATED, SHOOK, AND COMPLETELY LOST POWER TO THE WHEELS. THE FIRST INCIDENT (JUMPING 2 FEET) ALMOST CAUSED ME TO HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THE SECOND INCIDENT ALMOST CAUSE THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME TO REAR END ME BECAUSE WE WERE ACCELERATING TO MERGE ONTO A MAIN ROAD, AND MY VEHICLE ALL OF A SUDDEN STOPPED DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, BUT WITH THE ENGINE STILL RUNNING. *TR

A TRAFFIC OFFICER AND INVESTIGATED AN INCIDENT WHERE A VEHICLE OWNER WAS RUM OVER BY HIS VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE A PHYSICAL KEY TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE. THERE IS AN ELECTRONIC "KEY" AND A PUSH BUTTON START/SHUT OFF SWITCH. THE DRIVER PARKED THE VEHICLE IN A DRIVEWAY WITH A STEEP GRADE. THE VEHICLE WAS LEFT IN "DRIVE" WITH THE ENGINE OFF. THE DRIVER EXITED AND STARTED TO WALK AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE STARTED TO ROLL BACKWARDS, DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. THE DRIVER RAN TO THE VEHICLE TO TRY TO STOP IT AND WAS RUN OVER BY THE VEHICLE. IT IS POSSIBLE TO PARK THE VEHICLE, SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND EXIT THE VEHICLE WITH THE TRANSMISSION ANY GEAR SELECTION AND EXIT THE VEHICLE. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT WITH THIS SAME MODEL VEHICLE, BUT DIFFERENT YEARS, THAT THE ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF, THE TRANSMISSION WAS LEFT IN DRIVE AND THE VEHICLE RAN OVER THE DRIVER. IN BOTH INSTANCES THE VEHICLE WAS OWNED BY THE DRIVER FOR A SHORT TIME. *TR
