NHTSA Campaign: 21V164000

Component: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2021 Telluride, K5, and Forte vehicles. The Occupant Classification and Detection System (OCS/ODS) unit may not detect the presence of a child restraint system in the front passenger seat. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Risk: In the event of a crash, deployment of the front passenger air bag, with a child in that seat, can increase the risk of injury to the child.

Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the OCS/ODS unit, free of charge. The recall began March 18, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC207.

Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will install a new fuse and a wiring harness extension. Dealers will also inspect and replace the tow hitch harness assembly, as necessary. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 12, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC247.

Your engine failed suddenly at under 90,000 miles with no warning lights or gauges alerting you to a problem. When you took it to the dealership, they found the engine was missing 3.5 quarts of oil—nearly half its 7-quart capacity—yet your low oil warning light never came on. The engine's push rod bearing had failed, requiring a complete engine replacement at a cost of $9,000 that Kia denied covering under goodwill warranty. Addressing this may require diagnosing why the low oil warning system failed to alert you and investigating the cause of the bearing failure.

The 3.8L Lambda II GDI V6 engine suffered catastrophic failure at approximately 102,000 miles. The root cause is excessive oil consumption documented by an independent repair shop well before the 100,000-mile powertrain warranty expired. At 81,207 miles, during a routine oil change, the mechanic checked oil level before draining and found nothing on the dipstick.

Your sunroof came off its track in May 2025, leaving your roof exposed to weather, and you had to pay for repairs at a Kia dealership. The same sunroof mechanism failed again in March 2026, even though you haven't used it since the first repair due to fear it might get stuck open. The fix will likely involve realigning or replacing the sunroof track and mechanism components.

highSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Mar 2026

Your car's parking brake automatically engages when you turn off the engine due to a safety recall software update. However, in wet, salty, and snowy conditions common in northern states, this causes the brake pads and rotors to rust together and freeze, which locks up your brakes and can damage the braking system when you try to drive away. This premature wear may eventually lead to brake failure.
