Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 Kia Sportage vehicles manufactured August 9, 2007, to May 13, 2009. The wire harness cover on the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may be improperly sealed allowing water to get onto the HECU circuit board. If the water is contaminated with salt, such as could occur from melted snow, the wire harness connector pins may corrode and the circuit board may short circuit.
Risk: If the HECU short circuits, there is an increased risk of an engine compartment fire.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the connector pins for corrosion, if no corrosion is found, the connector cover will be replaced. If corrosion is present, the dealer will replace the HECU assembly and the connector cover, free of charge. The recall began on November 28, 2016. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC138.

Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.
NHTSA Campaign: 22V800000

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2008-2009 Sportage vehicles previously recalled under recall 16V-815. An engine compartment fire originating from around the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may occur while parked or driving.
Risk: A fire increases the risk of injury.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and other vehicles until the recall repair has been performed. Dealers will inspect and replace the HECU, its wiring harness, and its fuses, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 22, 2022. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC253.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 98)
Service Brakes, Hydraulic →4 issues
Your brakes locked up while driving, and you discovered the ABS system was stuck with a brake warning light on. You also noticed brake fluid leaking and found the brake pedal felt soft and spongy. The dealer confirmed the vehicle shouldn't be driven but said repair parts weren't available. Fixing this will likely require replacing the ABS module, brake calipers, and possibly the brake master cylinder to restore proper braking function.

You noticed heavy corrosion on your vehicle's subframe during an inspection underneath the car. The subframe is a structural component that supports major parts of your vehicle, and rust damage can weaken it over time. This issue should be inspected by a mechanic to determine if the corrosion affects the vehicle's structural integrity and safety. Addressing this may involve rust removal, protective coating application, or subframe replacement depending on the extent of the damage.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic,engine →1 issue
Your check engine light came on while driving at 40-45 MPH, and the vehicle started shuddering. On another occasion, your brakes failed completely while driving, nearly causing a crash. The vehicle was not repaired and was eventually totaled at around 117,000 miles. This will likely require a full brake system inspection and possible replacement of brake components, as well as engine diagnostics to identify the source of the check engine warning.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
Your radiator fan began smoking while the car was parked at low speeds, then released white smoke followed by heavy black smoke and a loud pop. The hood melted shut and components around the radiator and battery were damaged by heat. The radiator also expelled all its coolant onto the ground. This appears to be a serious cooling system or electrical failure that requires inspection of the radiator, cooling fan, and related wiring.

Power Train,electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
Your car produced heavy smoke coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment. Removing the fuses (likely related to the ABS brake system) temporarily stopped the smoking, and a technician suggested a control module may be causing the problem. This requires immediate inspection to identify the source of the electrical issue before driving the vehicle again.

Vehicle Speed Control,engine →1 issue
While driving on the highway with cruise control set at 65 mph, your car unexpectedly accelerated on its own. Pressing the brake and turning off cruise control only temporarily slowed it down — once you released the brake, it accelerated again. Even after stopping the vehicle completely and putting it in Park, the engine raced to full throttle by itself. After restarting the engine, it behaved normally for about 10 minutes, but then the problem returned with unintended acceleration occurring again. This issue likely involves a malfunction in the cruise control system or engine throttle control that needs professional diagnosis and repair.

Electronic Stability Control (esc),service Brakes →1 issue
While driving at a steady 55 mph, your car's stability control light came on and the transmission suddenly jerked into 1st gear, leaving you unable to drive it. Since then, your brake pedal sinks to the floor without stopping the vehicle. This likely requires inspection of the stability control system, transmission, and brake system, potentially including brake fluid level checks and component replacement.

Electronic Stability Control (esc) →1 issue
Your car's Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system intermittently displays an "ESC Off" message while driving at various speeds, and when this happens, your vehicle doesn't accelerate as expected. The problem occurs unpredictably and mechanics have been unable to reproduce or diagnose the issue. The fix may involve scanning the vehicle's computer for fault codes, inspecting wiring and connections to the ESC system, or replacing the ESC control module.

Power Train, unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your engine RPMs jump up and down while driving, making your car feel like you're suddenly pressing the gas hard then letting off. This happens at various speeds but is more noticeable around 40 mph and 80 mph, and occurs on highways and city streets alike. You've already replaced the transmission, but the problem persists. The issue could be related to your cruise control system or transmission shift solenoid, and a mechanic will need to diagnose which component is causing the erratic RPM behavior.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your check engine light came on while driving at 35 MPH. The used car dealer replaced the oxygen sensors and another component, but the problem continued to occur. When you contacted the Kia dealer about the persistent issue, they did not diagnose or repair it. The fix will likely involve a thorough diagnostic scan to identify what's causing the check engine light, followed by replacement of the faulty component.
