Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. THE WIRES CONNECTED TO THE C123 AND C124 CONNECTORS CAN BE PUT UNDER TENSION BY MOVEMENT OF THE ENGINE, THUS PULLING THE WIRES AND CONNECTORS, LOOSENING THEM AND RESULTING IN A LOSS OF CIRCUIT CONTINUITY.
Risk: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE ENGINE STALLING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SPRING CLIPS TO LOCK THE CONNECTORS TOGETHER. IN ADDITION, THE DEALERS WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO SOLDER A SPLICE IN THE WIRE HARNESS.
NHTSA Campaign: 97V234000
Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:LOCK
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. A MICROSWITCH ON THE REAR HATCH LOCK CYLINDER CAN MALFUNCTION CAUSING THE POWER DOOR LOCKS TO UNLOCK INADVERTENTLY.
Risk: SHOULD THIS OCCUR, SECURITY FROM UNWANTED INTRUSION INTO THE VEHICLE IS LOST.
Fix: DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE REAR HATCH DOOR UNLOCK CIRCUIT.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 217)
Air Bags →8 issues
Your airbags deployed unexpectedly while the vehicle was parked and stationary with the engine running. This happened without any collision or impact. The airbag system may have a faulty sensor or electrical issue that's causing it to activate when it shouldn't.

Your airbags deployed suddenly while your vehicle was parked and you were sitting in the driver or passenger seat, even though there was no crash. Fortunately, no one was injured. The dealer told you they couldn't diagnose why this happened because the vehicle is too old, so the problem wasn't fixed.

Your driver's side airbag deployed suddenly while the vehicle was parked and stopped, with no crash or impact occurring. No one was injured, but this unexpected deployment indicates a serious malfunction in the airbag system. The airbag system will need to be professionally diagnosed and repaired by a qualified technician, likely involving replacement of the airbag module or associated sensors.

While driving in reverse, both the driver's side airbags unexpectedly deployed — one from the steering wheel and one from beneath it. The airbags struck you in the face and hip area, causing minor injuries. This happened without any crash, and the vehicle was never repaired.

Your driver's side airbag warning light came on after the warranty expired and hasn't turned off since. Your passenger side airbag light stays on constantly, even when an adult is sitting in that seat. These warning lights indicate the airbag system isn't functioning properly and needs diagnostic testing. A mechanic will need to scan the airbag control module and inspect the wiring and sensors to identify and repair the underlying issue.

Your airbags deployed suddenly while driving at 15 mph for no apparent reason — you didn't hit anything and the vehicle hasn't been in an accident. This is a serious safety concern since airbags should only deploy during actual crashes. The dealer has been difficult to reach, so the issue remains unfixed. You'll need the airbag system diagnostics performed and likely the airbag control module or sensor replaced.

Your driver's side airbag deployed without warning while you were backing slowly out of a driveway, even though there was no crash or impact. No warning lights or signals appeared before it happened. The airbag system may have a faulty sensor or wiring issue that needs professional diagnostic testing and repair at a dealer.

Fuel System, Gasoline →3 issues
Your Sportage has been leaking gasoline for several years, and you can smell gas and see visible leaks under the vehicle. Kia sent you a repair notification letter in February 2008 about a known tank leak issue, but when you took it to a dealer, they said your vehicle didn't qualify for the recall repair. Kia's customer service then refused to help because your 10-year warranty had expired in 2007—even though the notification letter came after the warranty ended. Any repair to fix the gas leak will be at your own expense.

Sand and pebbles accumulated under your fuel tank's protective shield, eventually causing the tank to leak fuel. You've tried temporary putty fixes multiple times over two years, but the leaks keep returning. Your fuel tank likely needs to be professionally repaired or replaced to stop the leaking permanently.

Your fuel tank is leaking, causing gasoline to smell around your vehicle and puddle on your garage floor. You've already had the tank repaired, but you received a recall notice after the repair was completed and are seeking reimbursement for the repair costs. Fixing this typically involves replacing or sealing the fuel tank to stop the leak.

Fuel System, Gasoline, vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your engine stalls without warning while driving on the highway at around 55 mph, forcing you to slow down and stop. After restarting, it usually runs fine for a while, but stalls again on bumpy roads. You also can't fill up your gas tank because fuel leaks out from underneath the vehicle, and your car vibrates severely after driving for more than 2 hours. These issues may require inspection of the fuel system for leaks, the fuel pump or filter for clogs, and the engine's ignition or fuel delivery components.

Electrical System,visibility →1 issue
After your Sportage was in an accident with a bent frame, the dealership's repair left your vehicle shutting off unexpectedly—a problem they couldn't fix even after two visits. Your electric windows also stopped working and won't roll back up, and you noticed a whistling noise coming from inside the vehicle. The repair may require inspection of the electrical system for accident-related damage, window motor replacement, and diagnostic work to identify the source of the whistling and engine stalling issues.

Fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your fuel tank is leaking, which means gasoline may be dripping from underneath your vehicle. This is a safety concern that should be addressed promptly, as fuel leaks can be a fire hazard and may cause you to lose fuel while driving. The repair will likely involve inspecting the tank for cracks or holes and either sealing the leak or replacing the fuel tank entirely.

Engine And Engine Cooling, power Train →1 issue
Your 1997 Kia Sportage has been overheating, and even after the dealer replaced the radiator and main hose, the problem continued. A mechanic diagnosed the issue as a stuck cooling fan and overheating clutch, with possible transmission fluid circulation problems. The vehicle now won't start, and the original dealer is no longer in business to help resolve the issue.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
You're concerned that Kia has refused to include your 1997 Sportage EX 4WD in recall 1CMP005, which is supposed to replace the engine control module (ECM). You're also unsure whether recall 2CMP014 for wiring issues has been performed on your vehicle. The main issue is that Kia is not honoring the ECM recall. You may need to contact Kia directly or pursue the recall through NHTSA to have the engine control module replaced as part of the recall service.

Latches/locks/linkages →1 issue
While driving at 55 mph, your hood latch suddenly broke and the hood flew open, blocking your view. You were able to pull over and hold the hood down. The dealership was notified but didn't fix the problem, and your damaged hood and broken windshield haven't been repaired. The hood latch will likely need to be replaced to prevent this from happening again.

Electrical System →1 issue
Your vehicle unexpectedly revs up to nearly 2000 RPM, then jerks and stalls while driving. This problem has been occurring for about 5 years and continues even after multiple service visits. A recall was issued for your vehicle, but the dealership's computer shows the recall repair was supposedly already completed. Diagnosing this issue will likely involve checking the ignition system components, fuel delivery system, and verifying whether the recall repair was actually performed correctly.

Power Train →1 issue
Your car is making a loud noise from the rear that sounds like an airplane engine, which multiple mechanics have identified as a damaged rear differential. This problem appeared early in the vehicle's life (at 25,317 miles in 2003) and persisted despite replacing the rear bearing. The repair typically costs around $865 and involves replacing or rebuilding the rear differential assembly.
