CERTAIN MINI VANS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 209, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES." THE SECOND AND THIRD SEAT BELT BUCKLE ANCHOR BOLTS DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE STANDARDS.
Risk: IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH, THE OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED.

ON CERTAIN MINI VANS, DURING ASSEMBLY, THE THROTTLE CABLE WOULD TWIST ITSELF OUT OF POSITION.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE THROTTLE CABLE FREE OF CHARGE. VEHICLES PRODUCED FROM MARCH 20, 2001 THROUGH NOVEMBER 7, 2001 WILL HAVE A GUIDE CLIP INSTALLED ON THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT THE TENSION FORCE CABLE DOES NOT MOVE OUT OF POSITION. VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BEGINNING ON NOVEMBER 8, 2001, ALREADY HAVE THE EXTENDED GUIDE, WHICH ACCOMPLISHES THE SAME OBJECTIVE. THE RECALL BEGAN MARCH 21, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAT STRIKERS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 25, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 255)
Air Bags →5 issues
You were driving at 45 mph when your vehicle collided with another car, but none of the airbags deployed during the crash. You sustained injuries to your neck, lower back, left shoulder, and chest. This failure suggests a serious problem with your airbag system that would require diagnostic testing and likely replacement of airbag components.

Your 2002 Kia Sedona's front passenger seat occupancy sensor is faulty, causing the airbag warning light to stay on. More importantly, if you're in a head-on collision, the front passenger airbags may not deploy when needed. The occupancy sensor will likely need to be replaced or repaired to restore proper airbag function.

Your Sedona was involved in a crash at 45 mph, but the airbags failed to deploy. You suffered head, neck, and back injuries as a result. The vehicle was destroyed in the accident. Fixing this issue would require a complete airbag system inspection and replacement of any faulty sensors or modules.

Your airbag warning light is staying on constantly. Multiple mechanics have checked your vehicle and confirmed it's related to an airbag system problem, but they were unable to fix it. The mechanics recommended reporting this issue to Kia for further investigation. Fixing this will likely require Kia service to diagnose and repair the airbag system components.

Your airbag warning light stays on continuously, even though you haven't been in an accident or caused any damage to your van. This indicates a problem with your airbag system that needs to be diagnosed. A mechanic will need to scan your vehicle's diagnostic system to identify what's triggering the warning.

Both of your front door interior handles broke off completely in the same way, leaving you unable to exit through the doors normally—you can only get out by rolling down the window and opening the door from outside. Your sliding door handle, made of the same material, also broke off. This is a safety concern because if your windows stop working, you'd have no way to exit the vehicle.

Your exterior door handles are made of plastic and have broken off on all four doors, making them difficult to open since only part of each handle remains. The interior door handles have a plastic chrome coating that peels off and has sharp edges that have cut your hands several times.

Your car's air conditioning and heating units have wiring problems that are affecting their operation. Your dashboard lights aren't illuminating properly, and your power door locks and power windows are cutting out intermittently. An independent mechanic wasn't able to pinpoint the cause of these electrical failures. Fixing this will likely involve a thorough electrical system inspection and rewiring of the affected components.

Electrical System,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
While driving just a block from your house, you noticed smoke coming from the driver's side fuse panel, which then caught fire and engulfed the entire panel in flames. You called the fire department to extinguish the fire, but the damage was severe enough to total the vehicle. This type of failure typically involves inspecting the fuse panel wiring, power distribution connections, and electrical components for shorts or corrosion that caused the overheating.

Electrical System,seats →1 issue
Your van caught fire while parked in your yard, with flames coming from the driver's side door and windshield area. The fire melted the dashboard, radio, steering wheel, and windshield on the driver's side. The electrical system or seat components in the driver's area may have been the source of the fire.

Air Bags,seat Belts,seats →1 issue
Your 2002 Kia Sedona's rear captain chair seat belt latches were difficult to buckle before a severe accident on August 18, 2015. The rear seats themselves also had issues latching when installed. During a high-impact collision, none of the airbags deployed, and you and your three young children sustained injuries including seat belt abrasions, bruising, shoulder pain, and back issues. The driver's seat was also completely broken off in the crash. Repairs would involve replacing the airbag system, seat belt assemblies, and driver's seat.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your parked Kia caught fire in the engine compartment with no warning signs beforehand. The entire engine compartment was destroyed by the fire, and no one was in the vehicle at the time. This appears to be an electrical or engine-related fire that requires investigation of the wiring and engine components.

Electrical System,seat Belts →1 issue
Your vehicle stalled without warning while driving at 55 mph on multiple occasions and wouldn't restart. At the same time, the front passenger seat belt tightened up and got stuck—it wouldn't retract back to its normal position. The problem hasn't been diagnosed or repaired yet. This combination of an electrical stall and a stuck seat belt suggests issues in both your electrical and restraint systems that need professional inspection.

Tires →1 issue
After driving home from work at 35 mph, you noticed the next morning that the tire tread had separated from the sidewall around most of the tire's perimeter, and the tire was flat. This type of separation can happen suddenly and may have caused the tire to lose air overnight.

Engine →1 issue
Your camshaft rear plug has fallen out twice now (first in 2014, again recently), causing oil leaks both times. You're not sure whether the plug itself is faulty or if there's an underlying issue with the camshaft that's pushing it out. A mechanic should inspect the camshaft and install a new plug, and may need to check why the original plug isn't staying seated properly.

Fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your fuel door or filler neck may have an issue that's preventing gas from flowing properly into the tank. The fuel pump nozzle keeps shutting off automatically no matter how slowly you try to pump or how deep you insert it, making it very difficult to fill your tank. This could be caused by a blocked vent line, a faulty fuel door seal, or a problem with the filler neck itself, and may require cleaning or replacement of these components.
