Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 1349)
Engine →6 issues
While driving on a highway with approximately 160,000 miles, your engine suddenly lost power and stopped responding to the gas pedal, forcing your daughter to pull over on the shoulder. The check engine light began flashing and the car wouldn't restart properly, leaving her stranded in active traffic at highway speeds. The vehicle had to be towed to a shop and showed no warning signs before this sudden failure occurred. Diagnosis and repair will require a full engine diagnostic evaluation to determine the cause of the complete power loss.

Your 2013 Kia Optima stalled while driving at 55 MPH but restarted, and the check engine light came on. A mechanic discovered metal shavings in the oil and a broken valve and lifter in the engine, indicating internal engine damage related to a known technical service bulletin (TSB PI2002/PI2002A). The engine would need to be disassembled for repair, and Kia confirmed there is no recall to cover this failure. Resolving this issue would likely require engine disassembly, inspection of internal components, and replacement of damaged parts like the valve, lifter, and possibly bearings.

Your 2013 Kia Optima's engine seized and stalled while you were driving, and it wouldn't accelerate. Warning lights appeared on the dashboard, and mechanics confirmed the engine had failed completely. Because your vehicle has a rebuilt/branded title after a previous hit-and-run accident, the dealer refused to repair it, and Kia declined to cover the repair under warranty. The engine failure occurred at approximately 136,000 miles.

Your engine failed almost immediately after you purchased this 2013 Kia Optima. Kia has a known safety recall (SC147) for engine bearing wear caused by manufacturing debris, which typically results in engine replacement. The dealership confirmed the failure but denied your warranty claim and refused to process the recall, even after you requested recall compliance. This complaint alleges the dealership failed to honor Kia's own safety recall for this known defect.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your car shut down while driving, and afterward the ignition key wouldn't turn. You took it to the dealership, but they didn't complete a required recall and never told you to return. The dealership's diagnostic report shows communication failures across multiple electrical systems (smart key, lights, air conditioner, brakes), suggesting a deeper electrical problem rather than just a dead battery, yet they blamed only the battery without proper testing. The dealership also failed to address an open recall related to electrical and fuse issues before these failures occurred. This likely requires diagnosing and repairing the vehicle's electrical network, addressing the unresolved recall, and potentially replacing faulty modules or the fuse box.

Steering,power Train,service Brakes →1 issue
While driving on the highway at 55–58 mph, your rear driver-side electronic parking brake motor suddenly failed with a loud bang, followed by heavy smoke and a burning smell. The brake caliper locked up, causing the wheel to screech and drag, making the car very difficult to control at highway speed and creating a dangerous situation. The electronic parking brake actuator assembly appears to have failed suddenly rather than from normal wear. Repair will likely require replacement of the electronic parking brake motor and actuator assembly, and inspection of the rear brake caliper.

While your niece was driving at 65 MPH, a strong fuel smell came from the vehicle without warning, followed by violent shaking. When she pulled over, black smoke and flames came from the vehicle, which was completely destroyed despite the fire department's response. Your vehicle was subject to a known safety recall (NHTSA Campaign 23V652000) for brake system issues, but the manufacturer's investigator never showed up to inspect it. The repair would have involved inspection and service of the hydraulic brake system components.

Electrical System,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your 2013 Kia Optima began smoking and briefly caught fire while you were driving it, shortly after receiving a recall notice about engine fire risks. The fire stopped once you turned off the engine, and the vehicle was towed to safety with no injuries. You believe this is related to a known engine fire defect covered by the recall, and Kia has delayed repairs.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic, engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
While driving at 70 MPH, your speedometer malfunctioned and the check engine light flashed. You noticed a burning smell and smoke coming from under the hood, so you pulled over and let the car cool for an hour. When you tried to restart, multiple warning lights appeared and the car wouldn't start. After the dealer looked at it, they said the warnings cleared but recommended replacing tires, oil, and the oil filter—even though you'd replaced the oil and filter just two weeks before. You declined the repairs, picked up the vehicle, but the same problem happened again and the car stalled while driving. The vehicle has not been fully repaired, and the dealer towed it again but provided no updates. The repair will likely involve diagnosing and replacing components in the engine cooling system, fuel system, or electrical system causing the overheating and starting failure.
