POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 42RLE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, THE CUP PLUG THAT RETAINS THE PARK PAWL ANCHOR SHAFT MAY BE IMPROPERLY INSTALLED. IF THE SHAFT MOVES OUT OF POSITION, THE VEHICLE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE 'PARK' POSITION.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSIONS AND INSTALL A BRACKET TO ENSURE THE PARK PAWL ANCHOR SHAFT IS RETAINED IN THE PROPER POSITION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 28, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

Your Jeep's frame rails have rusted severely from the inside out, even though the outside looks normal. Water and debris enter through manufacturing holes and have no way to drain, causing the frame to deteriorate. In this case, the driver's side frame rail crumbled while the vehicle was slowly entering a street, causing the transmission pan to fall off and damaging the transmission, transfer case, axle, and driveshaft. The frame was so compromised that a repair shop couldn't safely lift the vehicle on a lift without risking further collapse.

Your Jeep is experiencing multiple electrical and engine issues that started around 143,000 miles: the engine loses power while driving (as if getting too much or too little fuel), the oil pressure gauge won't register even though the engine has oil pressure, and your dashboard gauges are gradually failing. Your airbag warning light blinks rapidly and you're going through spark plugs and coil packs monthly. You've already replaced the oil pump, oil sensor, ground wires, and terminals, but mechanics have identified that your oil pump drive gear and PCM (powertrain control module) need reprogramming, and ground connections may still be faulty. JEEP STARTED STALLING EITHER WHEN PARKED OR IN TRAFFIC. DEALERSHIP SAYS ITS THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL UNIT (PCM OR COMPUTER). TWICE ENGINE STALLED AS I WAS DRIVING. ONCE AS I WAS MAKING A TURN LUCKILY HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO PULL OVER AND ANOTHER TIME GETTING READY TO PROCEED AFTER A RED LIGHT IT STALLED ALL OF A SUDDEN AND AGAIN ABLE TO PULL OVER. I HAVE FOUND MANY JEEP OWNERS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM AND I AM AWARE JEEP IS AWARE BUT NOTHING HAS EVER BEEN DONE. STARTED MOTHERS DAY 2018 AND A FEW TIMES UP TILL JULY WHEN I JUST PARKED IT AND HAD IT TOWED TO 3 SHOPS INCLUDING DEALERSHIP.
OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL DAYS THE VEHICLE STARTED SHIFTING HARD AND EVENTUALLY WENT INTO "LIMP" MODE AND STARTED THROWING DIFFERENT CODES FOR VARIOUS SENSORS. AFTER MANY VISITS TO DIFFERENT MECHANICS I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM MYSELF AND PINPOINTED THE PCM AS THE PROBLEM.
2005-2006 JEEP WRANGLERS ARE INCURRING AN APPARENT LARGE NUMBER OF PCM/ECU FAILURES (AS EVIDENCED IN MANY ONLINE FORUMS AND A HIGH BACKLOG OF PCM ORDERS WHICH JEEP/CHRYSLER IS UNABLE TO FILL OR PROVIDE AN ETA FOR). THE FAILURE OF THE PCM REVEALS ITSELF IN MANY WAYS INCLUDING EMISSIONS SYSTEM FAILURES (AND RESULTANT VEHICLE INSPECTION FAILURES I WILL ADD), TRANSMISSIONS FAILING TO SHIFT, HARD FORCEFUL TRANSMISSION SHIFTS WITH VEHICLE LUNGES AND MORE. ON MY VEHICLE SPECIFICALLY THE O2 SENSOR CODES ARE COMING ON AND THE VEHICLE WILL RANDOMLY NOT SHIFT OUT OF SECOND GEAR WHICH PRESENTS ITSELF AS A SAFETY HAZARD WHEN ENTERING HIGH SPEED FREEWAYS AND INTERSTATES. THE O2 SENSORS WERE REPLACED NEW WITH OEM PARTS AND THE CODES DID NOT GO AWAY. THE FAULT WAS TRACED BY A REPUTABLE MECHANIC (CHRISTIAN BROTHERS AUTOMOTIVE) TO THE PCM AND FURTHER ONLINE INVESTIGATION INDICATES THIS A FREQUENT AND RECURRING ISSUE. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE THE PCM THROUGH JEEP/CHRYSLER I AM UNABLE TO BECAUSE THE PART IS BACKLOGGED. I HAVE PLACED A PRICEY $1600 ORDER FOR THE PART BUT THUS FAR (1 WEEK) I HAVE NOT BEEN PROVIDED WITH AN ETA OR ANY ANSWERS AS TO WHY THIS DESIGN DEFECT HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED. BASED ON THE LARGE NUMBER AND TYPE OF ISSUES REPORTED ONLINE WITH THIS PCM I AM LEFT WONDERING WHY IT IS NOT A SAFETY, EMISSIONS AND/OR RECALL ISSUE. MY SPECIFIC PCM PN IS R6044529AC BUT MULTIPLE VARIATIONS OF THE PN APPEAR TO BE EFFECTED.
THE 2005 JEEP WRANGLER SPORT WAS A TOTAL LOSS AFTER IT CAUGHT ON FIRE AND SEVERELY DAMAGED THE ENGINE AND THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. IT JUST HAD THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED THE DAY BEFORE THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO DEMONSTRATE TRANSMISSION ISSUES DESPITE THE NEW TRANSMISSION (INCLUDING DIFFICULTY SHIFTING AND A LOSS OF POWER WHILE GOING UPHILL). WHILE DRIVING UPHILL, THE VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION SLIPPED AND SMOKE STARTED POURING OUT OF THE ENGINE. THE DRIVER IMMEDIATELY PUT IT IN PARK AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. THE DRIVER RAN FROM THE VEHICLE AND SAW THAT THERE WAS A FIRE UNDERNEATH THE CAR - NEAR THE TRANSMISSION PAN. THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WENT UP IN FLAMES WITHIN 2 MINUTES. UNFORTUNATELY, IT WAS A TOTAL LOSS BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. AN INVESTIGATION WILL BE COMPLETED TO DETERMINE IF A TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK CAUSED THE FIRE. THE JEEP WRANGLER WAS A RIGHT HAND DRIVE THAT WAS BEING USED ON THE MAIL ROUTE THE DAY THAT THE FIRE OCCURRED.
VEHICLE WILL NOT SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR. THIS STARTED WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN TOWN AND NOW ONLY RUNS IN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR. DIAGNOSTIC CODE P0765 (SHIFT SOLENOID D) IS THE ONLY CODE SHOWING. OTHER (03-05) JEEPS WERE RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2005 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, SMOKE EMITTED FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS MANEUVERED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, WHERE THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND THEN THE FRONT END AND UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE IGNITED INTO FLAMES. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE SAFELY AND NOTICED THAT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKED ONTO THE GROUND. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES AND INFORMED THE FIRE ORIGINATED WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
SO WAS DRIVING MY JEEP WHEN I STOPED LOST ALL OIL PRESSURE DROPPED TO 0 PRESSURE WHEN ACCERLERATED OIL PRESSURE WENT BACK BUT CONTINUES TO DROP TO 0 WHEN STOPPED I HAVE REPLACE THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH WITH NO CHANGE .I HAVE RESEARCHED ONLINE AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH MOST 2005 HEEP WRANGLERS SO MY QUESTION IS IS WHEN IS ENOUGH /ENOUGH WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO RECALL AND DO THE RIGHT THING?
MY JEEP STARTED MAKING A VERY LOUD NOISE WHEN DRIVING. THE MORE GAS I GAVE IT THE LOUDER IT GOT AND NOW IT IS UN DRIVABLE DUE TO A DISTRIBUTOR OIL PUMP. BIGGEST PROBLEM IS ALL THE JEEP PARTS PEOPLE HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE PART IT WAS AND NOW THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY IN THE SYSTEM NOR CAN THEY TELL ME WHEN THEY CAN HAVE ME ONE. THERE IS A LOT OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS, STAND UP AND DO RIGHT FOR US JEEPERS!
THE BUSHING THAT ATTACHES THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER LINKAGE CABLE BROKE AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS RENDERED INOPERABLE. THIS SITUATION HAS HUNDREDS OF INCIDENTS DETAILED ON THE INTERNET AND JEEP SHOULD BE FORCED TO RECALL THE EFFECTED VEHICLES SINCE THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECTIVE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURER PART. CHRYSLER/JEEP IS BEING DISHONEST WITH CONSUMERS BY SAYING THEY HAVE NOT HEARD OF THE PROBLEM, YET THE PARTS MANAGER AT MY DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED ISSUE AND JEEP IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ISSUE, IS THE DEFECTIVE SHIFTER TUBE SLEEVE NYLON INSERT THAT CRACKS. THIS IS ALSO WELL DOCUMENTED ON THE JEEP FORUMS. JEEP IS AWARE THAT BOTH PARTS ARE DEFECTIVE AND THEY SHOULD BE FORCED TO FIX THE PROBLEM FREE OF CHARGE FOR OWNERS. PLEASE HELP! *TR

AROUND JUNE 2010, I PARKED THE VEHICLE IN A HOSPITAL PARKING LOT. UPON RETURNING TO VEHICLE, SHIFT LEVER JUST FLOPPED BACK AND FORTH. COULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK. HAD JEEP TOWED TO JEEP DEALERSHIP. THEY REPLACED THE SHIFTER CABLE AT A COST OF OVER $300.00. TWO WEEKS AGO, JUNE 2012, WHILE DRIVING, JEEP SHIFTER BROKE AGAIN WHILE LOCKED IN DRIVE. SAME DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE SHIFT CABLE BUSHING. ANOTHER $100. I CALLED JEEP/CHRYSLER AND THEIR REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAD NO OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. FUNNY, SINCE THERE ARE MANY WEBSITES ABOUT THIS VERY, ONGOING, PROBLEM WITH JEEP SHIFTER CABLES. IN MY OPINION, THIS COULD BE A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THERE IS NO WARNING OF FAILURE. IF IT HAD OCCURRED A DAY PRIOR, I COULD HAVE BEEN BACKING DOWN THE BOAT RAMP! I FEEL A RECALL, OR AT LEAST, A NOTIFICATION TO JEEP OWNERS, SHOULD BE INITIATED BY JEEP/CHRYSLER. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT IF HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, THEY WOULD PAY A PORTION OF THE REPAIR COST. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25000.
PURCHASE A USED 2005 JEEP WRANGLER (SPORT) WITH 103,000 MILES IN EARLY 2011. THE SIX SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION POPS OUT OF FIRST GEAR ABOUT ONCE A DAY WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOPPED POSITION. IT ALMOST SEEMS RANDOM, NEVER KNOW WHEN TO EXPECT THE EVENT. THE EVENT IS QUITE DISTURBING AND LOUD, WITH A LOUD "POP". THE JEEP ROLLS FORWARD BUT OUT OF GEAR. I MUST QUICKLY PUT IT BACK IN FIRST GEAR TO CLEAR THE INTERSECTION, RED LIGHT, ETC. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS TRANSMISSION? IS IT NORMAL WEAR-AND-TARE, OR IS THERE A DESIGN DEFECT WITH THE TRANSMISSION? WHAT IS THE SOLUTION TO THIS UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITION? HAS THERE BEEN A RECALL? *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED TWICE UNDER THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V460000 (POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND ROLLED BACKWARD UNTIL HE ENGAGED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RESPONSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY THE DEALER AND WAS FOUND THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 52,000.
HAVING TROUBLE WITH MY 2005 JEEP WRANGLER GOING INTO PARK. *TR
6 SPEED TRANSMISSION FORKS ARE POORLY DESIGNED. VEHICLE CAN POP OUT OF 1ST GEAR STARTING AT UNDER 15K MILES. CAN LEAD TO VEHICLE ROLLING AWAY WHEN PARKED IN GEAR AS WELL AS ROLLING BACK WHEN STARTING ON HILLS. MY VEHICLE HAD THE PROBLEM ALREADY AT ABOUT 90K WHEN I BOUGHT IT. NO IDEA HOW LONG IT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM IN THIS VEHICLE. MANY REPORTS INDICATE THE PROBLEM CAN OCCUR IN THIS PARTICULAR TRANSMISSION AT AS EARLY AS 15K DUE TO DESIGN. I AM AN ASE CERTIFIED MECHANIC, AND WHILE IT IS NICE TO BE PAID TO REPLACE THESE PARTS REGULARLY, IT CAN BE A DANGEROUS CONDITION AND NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED. *TR
I WAS TOWING MY 2005 JEEP WRANGLER WHEN A PASSING MOTORIST SIGNALED ME THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I STOPPED AND CHECKED THE JEEP WHICH WAS COVERED WITH AN OILY MATERIAL. I HAD A TOW TRUCK TOW THE JEEP TO SAN MARCOS CHRYSLER/JEEP. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT IT WAS NECESSARY TO REBUILD THE FRONT AND REAR DIFFERENTIALS AND REPLACE THE TRANSFER CASE AND BOTH FRONT AXLES. THEY CLAIMED IT WAS CAUSED BY HAVING A ONE SIZE LARGER TIRE ON THE FRONT TIRES THAN THE BACK TIRES. THIS WOULD ONLY CAUSE THE PROBLEM IF THE CAR WAS DRIVEN IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE WHICH IT NEVER WAS. *TR
2006 GMC SIERRA, WAS TOWING A 2005 JEEP WRANGLER USING A TOW BAR. THE TRANSFER CASE OF THE JEEP ENGAGED CAUSING THE WHEELS OF THE JEEP TO LOCK UP. THE VEHICLE IN TOW SPUN AROUND, TRAVELED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROADWAY. HE STATED THAT THE OTHER GEARS OPERATE NORMALLY. THE DEALER REPLACED THE THROW OUT BEARING, HOWEVER, THE FAILURE STILL PERSISTS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 34,461 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,000.

OCCURRENCE NOT CONSISTENT OR REPEATABLE ON DEMAND BUT IS FREQUENT. CAN OCCUR WITH APPLICATION (OR RELEASE) OF POWER BRAKE, TURNING OF STEERING WHEEL (POWER STEERING) OR AIR CONDITION CYCLING. WHEN THIS HAPPENS IN TECHNICAL TRAIL MANEUVERS (OFF ROAD CONDITIONS IN TREACHEROUS TERRAIN) OR IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO TREES, LARGE ROCKS, ABRUPT DROP-OFFS ALONG ROAD, THE RESULTS ARE POTENTIALLY DEADLY. NO CORRECTIVE ACTION CAN BE TAKEN BY ANY, NON FACTORY REPRESENTATIVE AS THIS IS A PROGRAMMING ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE COMPUTER. THIS VEHICLE IS NOT UNIQUE. MANUAL TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN GRINDING AND POPPING OUT OF REVERSE SINCE PURCHASE IN JANUARY 2005. RECENTLY TRANSMISSION WAS POPPING OUT OF FORWARD DRIVE GEARS AND FAILING TO ENGAGE. DEALER INSPECTED AND FOUND THE TRANSMISSION NOT GOING INTO REVERSE, POPPING OUT OF 3RD, GRINDING IN 5TH AND GENERALLY VERY NOISY. REVERSE SHAFT AND GEAR, COUNTER SHAFT AND SYNCHRONIZERS ALL SEVERELY WORN OUT. METAL CHUNKS WERE FOUND THROUGHOUT TRANSMISSION. TRANSMISSION HAD LESS THAN 15,000 MILES. COMPLETE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT WAS REQUIRED. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE GEARS WHICH OCCURS AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. WHILE THE SHIFTER WAS IN FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE IT SLIPPED TO NEUTRAL. THERE WAS A WHIRLING NOISE PRESENT WHEN THE SHIFTER WAS IN REVERSE AND A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE OTHER GEARS. UPON INSPECTING THE VEHICLE THE DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED A SECOND TIME. THE DEALER TIGHTENED THE GEAR LEAKAGES AND DETERMINED THE TAB ON THE FAN BLOWER HAD BROKEN AND WAS CAUSING THE WHIRLING NOISE. THE BLOWER FAN IS GOING TO BE REPLACED.
RECEIVED LETTER FROM MANUFACTURER SAFETY RECALL E14. SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT WITH DEALER WHERE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. VEHICLE WAS AT THE DEALERS AT 8:30 AM ON DAY OF APPOINTMENT. WENT TO PICK UP AT 4:30 PM (ON A FRIDAY) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY NEVER GOT AROUND TO FIXING IT. "TOO BUSY". I WASTED AN ENTIRE DAY AND SOMEONE'S ELSE'S TIME GETTING THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND BACK. NO TIME WAS GIVEN AS TO WHEN THEY WOULD FIX THIS PROBLEM AND I LEFT THE DEALER. I WANT THIS ON RECORD IN CASE SOMETIMES DOES HAPPEN WITH VEHICLE THAT CAUSES DAMAGE, INJURY OR POSSIBLY DEATH. SIX SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION GRINDS GOING INTO REVERSE/ POPS OUT OF REVERSE. DEALERSHIP PROVIDED TECHNICAL BULLETIN STATING THIS CONDITION WILL LEAD TO AN EVENTUAL LOSS OF FORWARD DRIVE GEARS IF NOT CORRECTED. HOWEVER, PROBLEM WAS UNABLE TO BE DUPLICATED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND SUBSEQUENTLY WAS NOT REPAIRED. *NM
2005 JEEP WRANGLER SPORT. PURCHASED 4/17/2005. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS SHIFTING FROM 4RD TO 3RD AND FROM 2ND TO 1ST WITHOUT CONTROL, WHILE DRIVING, THEN REMAINS IN 1ST GEAR AND NO LONGER SHIFTS. 5 DAYS IN SHOP AND NOTHING WAS FOUND. 3200 MILES ON VEHICLE. DANGER OF POSIBLE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL IS IMMINENT WHEN SHIFTING GEARS WITHOUT CONTROL. PROBABLE CAUSE OF MAJOR ACCIDENT. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED TWO TIMES.. GOING BACK TO SHOP. 2005 JEEP WRANGLER PURCHASED 4/13. ON 4/12 TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON IN TRAFFIC, VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD AND WOULD NO LONGER SHIFT GEAR (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) IN SHOP FOR PAST 8 DAYS. DEALER STATES POSSIBLE BAD SEALS. LESS THAN 600 MILES ON VEHICLE. ALSO VEHICLE SOLD WITHOUT RECALL WORK BEING COMPLETED ON VEHICLE, VEHICLE IS NOW PENDING RECALL WORK ON CAMSHAFT AND OIL PUMP.
