NHTSA Campaign: 15V046000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, to March 28, 2003, 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, to May 23 2003, and 2003-2004 Dodge Viper vehicles manufactured November 1, 2001, to June 30, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ECM), a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.

Risk: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.

Fix: Chrysler dealers will replace the air bag control module and side impact sensors as required, free of charge. This recall remedy was applied during earlier recall campaigns of these vehicles under safety recalls 12V527 and 13V040. All owners that have not had the recall repair performed under safety recalls 12V527 or 13V040 are strongly encouraged to have it performed and not wait for the final remedy to be deployed to the field. The recall began on December 29, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R06.

NHTSA Campaign: 12V527000

Component: AIR BAGS

Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2002 and 2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, through March 28, 2003, and 2002 through 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, through May 23, 2003. A component in the air bag control module may fail causing the front airbags, side curtain airbags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.

Risk: Inadvertent deployment of the airbags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module, free of charge. Owners were notified of the recall by interim letter in January 2013. The remedy for affected Liberty vehicles is expected to be available in April 2013. The remedy for affected Grand Cherokee vehicles is expected to be available later in the year. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.

Your 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee is under recall for airbag issues, but the dealership (Liberty Jeep in Hinesville, Georgia) has not scheduled an appointment or provided service despite your repeated requests. You've contacted Jeep headquarters about the dealership's lack of response, and the airbag recall remains unrepaired. Contact the dealership directly or escalate through Jeep customer service to schedule your recall repair appointment immediately.

Your Jeep Grand Cherokee was subject to an airbag recall (Campaign 15V046000), but the required repair part wasn't available from the dealer for an extended period. While driving, your vehicle lost power and the airbag warning lights came on. The dealer was unable to diagnose or repair the issue. The repair typically involves replacing the defective airbag control module or related electrical components.

Filed: Aug 2024

Your driver's side and passenger's side curtain air bags deployed suddenly while driving at 40-45 MPH, even though there was no impact or accident. This happened at approximately 212,000 miles on your vehicle. The manufacturer has been notified and opened a case, though it hasn't been assigned to a case manager yet.

NHTSA #: 11606525

Filed: Oct 2020

While your Jeep was stationary at a traffic light with windows up and AC on, both airbags suddenly deployed without any accident or impact to the vehicle. The deployment shattered the glove box, scattered plastic debris, destroyed the steering wheel, and filled the cabin with a strong burning smell. No injuries occurred, but this unexpected airbag deployment suggests a potential electrical or sensor malfunction in the airbag system.

NHTSA #: 11372374
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Sep 2020

Your airbags deployed on their own while the vehicle was moving at just 5 mph, with no warning light to alert you beforehand. The driver sustained burn injuries to his right arm from the deployment. This happened as part of a known safety recall (NHTSA Campaign 15V046000), and your dealer will need to inspect and replace the faulty airbag system components.

NHTSA #: 11354187
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Sep 2020

Your steering wheel and front passenger airbags deployed suddenly while you were sitting at a drive-thru, even though there was no collision or impact. The airbag deployment caused damage to your windshield, steering wheel, glove box, and dashboard, and the glove box struck your chin and forehead. No warning light appeared before or after this happened. The airbag system likely has an electrical or sensor fault that caused the unintended deployment.

Filed: Jul 2020

Your front driver's and passenger's airbags deployed suddenly while driving at 35 mph, even though there was no crash or impact. This happened without any warning. The dealer was notified and your vehicle is part of a known safety recall, but the issue was not repaired.

NHTSA #: 11339276

Filed: Sep 2019

Your driver's side front airbag deployed on its own while your 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee was parked. The dealership said they would replace the airbag control module (ORC) but not the airbag inflator itself, and the vehicle was never actually repaired. This is a known issue covered under NHTSA safety campaign 15V046000. Fixing this will require replacing the faulty airbag system components to prevent future unintended deployments.

Filed: Sep 2021

Your 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee is subject to a Takata airbag recall, but when you took it to the dealer, they told you the replacement parts were on backorder and unavailable. You're concerned that the manufacturer has taken too long to make parts available for this recall repair. The fix will involve replacing the defective airbag components once parts become available at your dealer.

NHTSA #: 11432488
Seats2 issues
criticalSEATS
Filed: Oct 2020

Your driver's seat frame has broken at the front mounting bracket, causing the seat to lean and slide backward away from the steering wheel and toward the rear seats. This problem appears to be widespread among other owners of this model year. The broken frame raises concerns about whether the seat would remain secure during a rear-end collision. Fixing this will likely require replacing the broken seat frame bracket or the entire seat assembly.

NHTSA #: 11365224
criticalSEATS
Filed: Jan 2020

Your front power seat brackets have snapped and separated from the floor, causing your seat to become detached and wobble side to side, especially when turning. This makes your seatbelt ineffective in a crash since the seat is no longer properly secured. The brackets will need to be replaced and the seat reattached to the floor.

NHTSA #: 11300269
Air Bags,seat Belts1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
Filed: May 2023

Your side curtain airbags deployed unexpectedly while driving at low speed, startling you but causing no injuries. When you took the car to a Jeep dealership to address this issue and complete a recall repair, the dealer said they couldn't fix the airbags because replacement parts (seat belts and headliner components) are no longer available from the manufacturer. The dealer also told you that if parts were available, you would have to pay for the airbag repair yourself, and they charged you for the diagnostic work. The airbag warning light is now on. Repairing or replacing the side curtain airbag system and associated seat belt components may require ordering specialized safety parts or a full airbag module replacement.

Filed: Mar 2020

Your Jeep unexpectedly shifted into reverse and accelerated aggressively on its own when you closed the driver's door while the engine was running. Your passenger was able to shift to neutral and turn off the engine before impact. Since this incident, your Jeep runs poorly when shifted into drive. This may require a full diagnostic of the transmission control system and engine sensors to identify what caused the unintended acceleration.

NHTSA #: 11315974
Fuel/propulsion System1 issue
criticalFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Sep 2019

Your shift cable is rubbing against the fuel line and has worn a hole through it, causing fuel to leak. You may notice a strong gasoline smell and see fuel dripping underneath your vehicle, especially when the engine is running. The leak stops when the engine shuts off because fuel pressure decreases. Fixing this will require replacing the damaged fuel line and repositioning the shift cable to prevent future contact.

NHTSA #: 11256274
Engine1 issue
criticalENGINE
Filed: Aug 2019

Your hydraulic cooling fan stopped working while driving, causing your engine to overheat and requiring a tow truck to get you off the highway. The fan solenoid works when you apply power directly from the battery, but it won't engage when the engine is running, suggesting an electrical connection or control issue rather than a solenoid failure. The repair will likely involve diagnosing the wiring, electrical connectors, or control module that signals the fan to turn on during normal operation.

Filed: Jun 2023

Your 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee has two unresolved recalls, including an issue where the seats overheat. Additionally, your turn signal and brake lights have been intermittently failing—they were completely non-functional for nearly a month, then started working on their own, though they continue to fail occasionally despite all fuses being fine. The manufacturer may be responsible for covering recall repairs at no cost, and a technician should diagnose the electrical wiring or switch components causing the light failures.

Your airbag warning light remains on even after you replaced the battery, and your check engine light is now also staying on. Both of these warning lights typically indicate that your vehicle's diagnostic system has detected a fault that needs to be addressed. A mechanic will need to scan your vehicle's computer to identify what's triggering these lights and determine what repairs are needed.

Filed: Mar 2020

Your front passenger window and back driver-side window have both fallen down while driving, including once during snow while your son was in the car. You're hearing a popping noise coming from the steering wheel area or front end, and your cruise control accelerate button is malfunctioning — when you press it to speed up, the car won't stop accelerating. Fixing these issues will likely involve replacing the window regulators, inspecting the steering and suspension components for the noise, and diagnosing the cruise control electrical system.

Filed: Aug 2019

Your turn signals aren't working properly, and the flasher relay that controls them fails after only 6 months to a year. Your brake lights also malfunction due to a faulty design — the light fixtures clip into place but disconnect on bumpy roads, making them unreliable. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the flasher relay and potentially redesigning or securing the brake light assembly.

Your driver's side electric door lock makes a loud buzzing noise when you try to lock or unlock it. This suggests the lock actuator motor may be struggling or failing. You should have the door lock actuator inspected and likely replaced to restore normal operation.
