POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT

ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, IF A DRIVER HAS NOT PLACED THE SHIFTER LEVER FULLY INTO THE "PARK" POSITION AND LEAVES THE VEHICLE RUNNING, THE VEHICLE MAY UNEXPECTEDLY MOVE REARWARD AFTER SEEMING TO BE STABLE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SECONDARY DETENT SYSTEM TO THE FLOOR SHIFTER ASSEMBLY. DAIMLERCHRYSLER SENT INTERIM NOTICES TO OWNERS CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM ON MARCH 22, 2002. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 23, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

While driving your 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the engine suddenly lost power with no warning lights appearing. When you pressed the brake pedal all the way to the floor, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle, causing you to leave the road and roll into a drainage ditch. The airbags did not deploy during the rollover. The vehicle was towed but never inspected or repaired. HEAVY FAILURE ANALYSIS DONE. ALLEGE THAT JEEP CUT CORNERS THAT RISK DRIVER SAFETY. THEY USED AND MAY STILL BE USING CHEAP CHINESE MICROPROCESSOR CHIPS IN THEIR PROGRAM CONTROL MODULES (PCM). FRED BAILEY FATAL ACCIDENT IS TELLING. HIS JEEP SHUT DOWN ON A BRIDGE. PLENTY OF GAS IN THE TANK. TRACTOR TRAILER PLOWS INTO THE BACK OF THIS JEEP (LIKE MINE). THE GAS TANK EXPLODES AND HE DIES. I PAID A LOT OF MONEY TO KEEP MY JEEP IN WORKING CONDITION. IT IS WORTH ABOUT $3,000 IF IT WAS RELIABLE. I DID THE FUEL TANK RECALL. BROUGHT IN THE JEEP. IT ALREADY HAD A TOW PACKAGE INSTALLED. THEY KEEP THE JEEP FOR HOURS. LIKELY DID NOTHING TO IT UNDER THE RECALL. DIDN'T GIVE ME $100 GIFT CARD. EDMONDS VALUE OF MY CAR WITH 247,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER IS LESS THAN $1,000. EVEN IF I GOT THE EXTRA $1,000 RECALL CREDIT, IT MEANS I HAVE TO BUY ANOTHER LOW QUALITY VEHICLE FROM A BRAND I DO NOT TRUST. IN SHORT, JEEP NEEDS TO MAKE NEW PROGRAM CONTROL MODULES AVAILABLE AGAIN AND AT AFFORDABLE COST. THEY OWE SAFETY TO ALL JEEP OWNERS. SHAME ON THEM AND GOOD ON YOU FOR FINING THEM $105 MILLION. HAVE DONE AS THEY HAVE AND REPLACED NEARLY EVERY SENSOR. HAVE YET TO REPLACE PCM/ECM. DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL FIX DUE TO SOME ONLINE HAVE AND STILL HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. LIKE THE PEOPLE ONLINE I HAVE TAKEN IT TO DIFFERENT MECHANICS, NONE OF WHICH COULD DUPLICATE OR FIND A PROBLEM. SURPRISED WITH AS MANY PEOPLE HAVING THIS ISSUE JEEP HASN'T RESOLVED THIS. THE DRIVER GOT OUT TO DROP OFF AN ENVELOPE AT THE OFFICE AND AS SHE ENTERED THE BUILDING THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTED FROM PARK TO REVERSE. THE VEHICLE ROLLED, UNDER POWER, BACKWARD INTO TWO OTHER VEHICLES DAMAGING ALL THREE VEHICLES. THE PARKING BRAKE HAD NOT BEEN APPLIED BECAUSE THE DRIVER EXPECTED THE "PARK POSITION" OF THE SHIFTER TO BE ADEQUATE TO KEEP THE CAR FROM MOVING. DAIMLER/CHRYSLER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY HAD AN INVESTIGATOR LOOK AT THE VEHICLE. HE CONCLUDED THAT THE PARKING PAWL, TRANSMISSION LINKAGE AND ALL ASSOCIATED PARTS ARE OPERATING PROPERLY. THEIR DECISION WAS, THAT BECAUSE THE "RECOMMENDATIONS" IN THE VEHICLE MANUAL WEREN'T FOLLOWED, THEY HAD NO OBLIGATION IN THE MATTER. THE DRIVEWAY WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED HAD ENOUGH SLOPE THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE ROLLED FREELY IF IT HAD NOT BEEN PLACED IN PARK. I EXPLAINED TO CRYSTLER, THAT NOW ,I WONDER IF THE WHOLE TIME THEY COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM IF IT WAS MY TRANSMISSION. AT 55000 MILES I UNDERSTAND THINGS START GOING WRONG, BUT NOT THE TRANSMISSION. I FELT THAT IF IT NEEDED REPAIR THEY SHOULD PAY FOR IT, OR AT LEAST WAIVER THE LABOR. IT WAS LATER DETERMINED AFTER SEVERAL THOUSANDS MILES THAT AT A MINIMUM THE BEARINGS IN THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL WERE BAD AND AT LEAST ONE AUTHORIZED DEALER HAS CLAIMED THAT THEY THE REAR ARE BAD AS WELL. BOTH DIFFERENTIALS SIMULTANEOUSLY. OBVIOUS CONCERN FOR SEVERAL REASONS: 1)THE CAR IS ALL WHEEL DRIVE FULL TIME. I HAVE TEST DRIVEN OTHER 1997 5.2L JEEPS WITH TRAILER PACKAGES AND THOSE VEHICLES DECELERATED NORMALLY, IN A MANNER SIMILAR TO ALL OF MY OTHER 45 YEARS OF DRIVING EXPERIENCES. I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE HOME FROM MY SON'S SCHOOL...THERE WERE NO PASSENGERS IN THE CAR. I PULLED INTO MY FLAT DRIVEWAY AND STOPPED AT THE END OF IT TO RETRIEVE MY MAIL FROM MY MAILBOX. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY STOPPED, I PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARK; RELEASED MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL; TOOK OFF MY SEATBELT; OPENED THE DOOR; AND GOT OUT. EVERYTHING SEEMED NORMAL AT THIS POINT. HOWEVER, AFTER TAKING ABOUT FIVE STEPS AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE TOWARDS MY MAILBOX, THE VEHICLE SLIPPED OUT OF PARK INTO REVERSE AND STARTED DRIVING BACKWARDS....ALL BY ITSELF. AFRAID THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD RUN INTO ANOTHER CAR, OR A HOUSE, OR WORSE, MY INSTINCT TOLD ME TO TRY AND STOP IT. I RAN TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AS IT WAS MOVING BACKWARD AND TRIED TO GET IN (IN ORDER TO PUT THE BRAKE ON). IN MY EFFORT TO DO SO, HOWEVER, THE DOOR OF THE MOVING VEHICLE KNOCKED ME DOWN ONTO THE STREET AND COMPLETELY RAN OVER MY LEFT LEG, BREAKING MY FEMUR BONE IN TWO PLACES. AS I WAS UNABLE TO MOVE, SCREAMING IN SEVERE PAIN, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED BACKING UP ON ITS OWN ONTO MY FRONT LAWN, THROUGH A DITCH, OVER A CABLE T.V. BOX, THROUGH AN EMPTY FIELD, FINALLY STOPPING WHEN IT TRIED TO GO ACROSS A RATHER DEEP DITCH. THE MOTOR, HOWEVER, CONTINUED TO RUN.
