TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 JEEP CHEROKEE. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDERGOING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD CRACKED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
I HAVE A 1997 JEEP WITH 150,000 MILES ON IT AND I AM HAVING A LOT OF ISSUES WITH IT STALLING OUT FOR NO REASON. IT'S BEEN DOING THIS FOR OVER A YEAR. IT STARTED ALL OF A SUDDEN OUT OF THE BLUE. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE REPAIR SHOP OVER 20 TIMES TO TRY AND GET THE PROBLEM RESOLVED AND THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE EVEN KEPT IT OVER NIGHT AND HAD IT ON MACHINES TO FIGURE OUT WHY IT STALLS AND AM NOT ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT. I HAVE REPLACE SENSORS, FUEL FILTER, BATTERY, NOT TO MENTION SO MANY OTHER PARTS AND NOTHING IS STOPPING IT FROM STALLING OUT FOR NO REASON. I HAVE SPENT SO MUCH MONEY AND I LOVE MY JEEP BUT I AM REAL NERVOUS TO DRIVE IT THAT I MIGHT GO TO TURN AND THE JEEP WILL STALL WHILE TURNING A CORNER AND GET T-BONED BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. OR DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WILL SPUTTER AND STALL OUT. I HAVE READ THAT "MANY" JEEPS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE FROM THE SAFETY CAR SITE LOOK INTO THIS AS THERE WILL BE A FAMILY IN THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE DRIVING AND THE PROBLEM COULD OCCURE AND CAUSE A DIASTER IN SOMEONES LIFE. I HAVE DRIVEN IN DIFFERANT ARES ON THE ROAD, HIGHWAY, RESIDENTIAL AREAS, GOING THE SPEED LIMIT, AND ALSO GOING 15 MILES AN HOUR AND IT WIL STALL OUT. LAST SUMMER I HAD THE VEHICLE IN THE SHOP FOR INTERMITTENTLY SHUTS OFF WHEN DRIVING.THEY REPLACED FUEL PUMP. AND ALTERNAER AND BELTS.THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO HAD A TUNEUP.THE VEHICLE STA.. IIRTS RIGHT UP BUT WHEN I AM DRIVING IT WILL CUT OFF AT ANY TIME.THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE .I HAVE PUT OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS IN MY VEHICLE.THE DEALER HAS TAKEN MY MONEY AND THE VEHICLE IS A DEATH TRAP.I AM RETIRED AND I NEED MY CAR TO GET AROUND.
MY 1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE (ORIGINAL OWNER) STUMBLES AND DIES, IT DOES RESTART ONCE I SHIFT TO NEUTRAL. IT IS GETTING MORE FREQUENT. I HAD A TOTAL OF 8 INCIDENCES IN THE PAST WEEK. 6 TIMES HAPPENED PULLING UP TO STOP SIGN AT ABOUT 15 MPH. 2 TIMES HAPPENED WHILE CRUISING ALONG AT 55 MPH. I LOST POWER STEERING AND BRAKE BOOST. THERE IS A LOT OF INTERNET INFORMATION REGARDING THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I'M WORRIED DRIVING MY JEEP IN ANY TRAFFIC NOW. *TR

THIS JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO STALLS AT ANY SPEED AND SUDDENLY THE ENGINE STOPS AND CAN EVEN SEND A STRONG BACKFIRE ABLE TO CRACK THE MUFFLER. IT WORKS PERFECTLY FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AND WITHOUT ANY SYMPTOM IT STRUGGLES AND STALLS. SOMETIMES IT REMAINS ON AND SOMETIMES DIE. IT BROKE ME 3 MUFFLERS. A LOT OF MONEY AND WORK HAVE BEEN DONE BY MECHANICS INCLUDING JEEP DEALER WITHOUT FIXING THE PROBLEM. PCM AND A LOT OF PARTS HAD BEEN REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED ONLY IN PART. IT STILL DIE WHILE DRIVING. THIS JEEP CHEROKEE IS NOT RELIABLE TO USE IN HIGHWAY FOR THE RISK TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE. JEEP AND MECHANICS ARE AT RANDOM TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE VISITED WEB SITES ABOUT JEEP PROBLEMS AND I KNOW THERE ARE OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

A FEW WEEKS AGO, I DROVE IT TO A TOWN 30 MILES AWAY AND BACK WITH NO ISSUE. THE NEXT TIME I DROVE IT, THE ENGINE SHUT OFF TWO BLOCKS AWAY FROM MY RESIDENCE. THERE IS NO PATTERN TO THE MALFUNCTIONS NOR COMPUTER CODES TO DOWNLOAD. HAVE REPLACED COMPUTER, CONNECTORS TO COMPUTER, CRANKSHAFT SENSOR, CAMSHAFT SENSOR, AND MANY OTHER NUMEROUS PARTS. VARIOUS MECHANICS HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE, SOME HAVE GIVEN UP DUE TO FRUSTRATION. CHRYSLER DEALERSHIPS DENY EVER HEARING OF THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER, I HAVE MET THREE OTHER GRAND CHEROKEE OWNERS IN PERSON WHO HAVE HAD IDENTICAL ISSUES. I CONTACTED THE CHRYSLER DODGE MANUFACTURER ABOUT MY PROBLEM AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY DID NOT MANUFACTURE THE ENGINE WIRING HARNESS FOR, THE 1997 JEEP G CHEROKEE AND THAT IT IS MY PROBLEM. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 95,000.

IT'S IN THE SHOP NOW, AND AFTER DOING SOME ONLINE RESEARCH, I HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, MOST OF THEM BEING CHARGED AN OUTRAGEOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY BY JEEP DEALERS WHO, ULTIMATELY, DO NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I WOULD NOT BE SO CONCERNED, BUT LIKE MANY JEEP OWNERS, I HAVE SMALL CHILDREN. THE PROBLEM STARTED ALMOST A YEAR AGO, HAPPENS DAILY, AND IF IT SHOULD HAPPEN ON A BUSY ROAD OR HIGHWAY WHEN I AM GOING 60+MPH, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT MY SAFETY AND THAT OF MY KIDS. *TR

THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 100,000.

1. CAME OUT OF GEAR WHEN IN PARK AND CRASHED SUSTAINING 5000.00 DOLLARS IN DAMAGE. HAD RECEIVED A LETTER FROM DAIMLER-CHRYSLER IN 2002,HOWEVER IT WAS NOT DATED STATING THE CAR COULD DO THIS. NO RECALLS WERE PRESENT AT THE TIME. THEY DENIED ANY PROBLEM WHEN CAR CRASHED. CALLED AN ATTORNEY WHO WAS A RELATIVE THAT TOLD WITHOUT A DOUBT (100%) THE CAR WOULD DO THIS. HE THEN CALLED ME BACK AND STATED HE COULD NOT REPRESENT ME BECAUSE HE REPRESENTED DAIMLER-CHRYSLER. I OWN A 1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 4.0 L6 TWO WHEEL DRIVE WITH 165,000 MILES. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 65 AND THE ENGINE DIED. THANKFULLY I WAS ON AN EMPTY HIGHWAY AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE. THIS HAPPENED FOUR TIMES SINCE. I STILL HAD POWER BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT RESPOND. SO HERE WE ARE $1400 LATER DRIVING OFF THE LOT AND THE CAR CUTS OFF TWICE BEFORE DRIVING 1/4 OF A MILE. THEY HAVE CLEANED THE THROTTLE PLATE TWICE, REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, REPLACED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REPLACED A PRIMARY COIL TWICE, REPLACED THE O2 DOWNSTREAM SENSOR, REPLACED WIRING IN THE STEERING COLUMN AND THEN THIS WEEK REPLACED THE O2 UPSTREAM SENSOR. AND I STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE HESITATION AND CUTTING OFF. THE ONLY RESPONSE FROM THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS THAT WITH THIS MANY MILES I'M GOING TO BE NICKELED AND DIMED WITH REPAIRS. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO ALBERA BROS. JEEP/CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP WHERE I?VE TAKEN THE VEHICLE SINCE I PURCHASED IT. I ALSO PURCHASED A WARRANTY, FOR $1500 AT THE TIME THAT I PURCHASE THE VEHICLE, WHICH WAS CONTAINED IN THE CONTRACT OF THE AUTOMOBILE INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS. THE WARRANTY WAS TO COVER ALL REPAIR THAT IS COVER FOR 72 MONTHS OR 100K MILES. I CONTACTED THE WARRANTY COMPANY, WARENTECH, WHO'S HEADQUARTERS ARE IN TEXAS AND WAS ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO SEND SOMEONE OUT TO LOOK AT THE CAR. SOMEONE DID COME OUT LOOK AT THE CAR AND TOOK PICTURES. AFTER A FEW DAYS I CONTACTED WARENTECH AND WAS ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO REVIEW THE INFORMATION AND WOULD GET BACK TO ME. AFTER SEVERAL MORE DAYS I CONTACTED WARENTECH AGAIN. I WAS ADVISED THAT THEY NEEDED ME FAX THEM MY MAINTENANCE RECORDS VERIFYING THAT I HAD MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE. I FAXED WARENTECH COPIES OF ALL RECENT MAINTENANCE RECORDS. AFTER TWO OR THREE MORE DAYS, I ONCE AGAIN CONTACTED WARENTECH AND WAS ADVISED THAT I NEEDED TO SEND MORE MAINTENANCE RECORDS AND IF I DIDN'T HAVE ANYMORE THEY WOULD DENY COVERAGE FOR REPAIR TO THE VEHICLE. I FAXED OVER A TOTAL OF 13 MORE RECORDS OF MAINTENANCE VERIFYING THAT OIL CHANGES AS WELL AS OTHER MAINTENANCE RECORDS. THAT WAS TWO DAYS AGO AND I?VE NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM WARENTECH SINCE. I HAVE ALREADY PAID $125 DOLLARS TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVE PAID ANOTHER $140 FOR A RENTAL CAR TO GET TO AND FROM WORK. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL CHRYLSER DEALER THAT SAME DAY. ON MONDAY, JULY 22, 2002 I NOTIFIED MY INSURANCE COMPANY MET LIFE. THEY SENT AN APPRAISER THAT WEEK WHO STATED THAT THE ENGINE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY DEBRIS ENTERING THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. I NOTIFIED CHRYSLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY AT THEIR CONSUMER COMPLAINT NUMBER AT 9AM MONDAY JULY 22ND THAT THERE HAD BEEN AN ENGINE FIRE IN MY 1997 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT. I ALSO RECEIVED INFORMATION THAT DAIMLERCHRYSLER IS RECALLING OVER A MILLION SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FROM 1999 TO 2002 BECAUSE OF A MANIFOLD PROBLEM THAT COULD CAUSE AN ENGINE FIRE. HE USED TO WORK FOR CHRYSLER AND SAID THAT THEY HAD EVEN NEW ONES COMING BACK WITH THE SAME PROBLEM IN THE SAME SPOT.
