2017 Jeep Cherokee Transmission Problems

I am writing regarding a defective transfer case on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee. I took my car in to Firestone as I was having issues with my Heater not blowing hot air and my check engine coming on and off. I have attached a copy of Firestone's estimate of repair.

We experienced a loss of motive power while on the interstate in busy high speed traffic [XXX] . We had to attempt to maneuver the constantly slowing vehicle to the shoulder while being passed by tractor trailer drivers who were driving at full speed. Luckily 2 of them in the right lane were paying attention and swerved aggressively to avoid hitting my family and I.

Went to go through a busy intersection and power transfer unit failed, almost causing an accident. A second accident almost happened when car started rolling away due to park not working. Car had no warning, it is well maintained and I had 0 indication of a looming failure.

Vehicle had PTU and Transmission replaced in May 2020 for both components failing. Was repaired at dealership under warranty. On [XXX] the car front wheels locked up and would not move.

I have been hearing a grinding noise coming from my car for a few months. I was having another service on my car and tire replacement at an independent provider and asked them to diagnosing the noise. After completing their diagnosis they determined I need my PTU replaced.

Several months ago, my dashboard displayed a service four-wheel-drive message. I took it to a mechanic. They diagnosed to have the code C14A7-97 CPU motor component system operation obscured or blocked.

"Service Shifter" light came on, and all my shifter's lights are red. Looking across the internet, this is a widespread issue. Thankfully this didn't cause an accident, but it sounds like some users report not being able to shift into park.

The service shifter light keeps coming on. It will also misfire when the start-stop system is used. Sometimes when it misfires it will cause the valves to be out of sink and then the engine runs very rough until it is fixed.

W84 Powertrain Software- July 30 2022 Jerry Seiner Casa Grande Dealership technicians inspected and reprogram the PCM and TCM software and closed the recall but 2 months later all the lights on my dashboard came on check engine light service shifter park brake etc. I went back to the dealership and the advisor told me to go to the dealership where I bought it from.

When driving my jeep the dashboard will randomly give me a warning to service my shifter and all of the lights on shifter will go red. I have to turn my jeep off and back on for the lights to go back to normal. I have had to replace the power transfer unit due to the 4 wheel drive not working anymore.

Power Transfer Unit falls off because of acknowledged manufactured defect: 1.While it seems extremely unlikely for all bolts of the power transfer unit to eject and/or shear, it is worth noting that increased stress & strain upon an un-torqued bolt could lead to such a condition.

On July 3, 2021 I stopped at STOP sign, then when I stepped on the gas car wasn't moving, when I looked at the gear shift I noticed all the lights are on, all P R N D AND "-" AND "+" NEXT TO THE GEAR (PICTURE ATTACHED). Then I stopped the engine and restarted the car to move on.

I received an engine shutoff signal which disabled the car immediately without prior warning. It was due to the protection signal for low oil. The vehicle had a oil change 5,000 miles prior with synthetic oil.

At slow speed while accelerating from a stop, the transmission shifted abruptly and caused the vehicle to jerk. In addition there is a loud crunch. Bang or clunk noise that made me feel like another car had rear ended me.

I've had the service shifter light come and off since I bought it used 15 months ago. I told the dealership and they said they couldn't find anything wrong. Two days ago, I was driving 40 MPH and the car stopped accelerating and a light came on that said car must be stopped to shift.

I get a notice of 'service shifter' sporadically. I'm highly concerned this hasn't been a recall considering the accident I just heard about and I've almost experienced. I was unable to get out of gear when this message came on.

Driving 2017 jeep with only 40,000 miles down a major highway.. Battery light came on and jeep stalled almost causing accident. Went to dealer for repair, was told it needed and oil change?!!

Driving down the rd service shifter light comes on , then pull over put car in park then the car just turns off in the middle of the rd. You have to crank and crank to get it started back while in the middle of the rd. I almost got run over on the highway where the speed limit is 65.

I bought my car 3/21/2017 and I've loved it up until the recent problems. Since june/2019 when I make a left turn all of the lights on my gear shifter light up and a display of "service shifter" pops up and the only way to clear it is to pull over, turn the car off and start it up. As I was accelerating out of a corner, I lost total power in the drive train. I was not able to accelerate at all, its as if the neutral was switched on by itself. All my lights on the gear shifter lit up.

I have purchased the jeep cherokee sport 2017 about 2 and half months ago in early august 2017. As of today I have only driven 1986 miles. Within these miles I have experienced a serious problem three times which were life threatening while being on the road.

I am not sure what is failing but I was driving on the highway when all the sudden it lost power and when I pressed the gas to try and get back up to speed it acted like there was no power at all the started to kick in very slowly. July 13, 2023 We towed it to the dealership in our hometown and were told that it was one month out of recall for the exact same problem.

I was driving up bridge in morning rush traffic suddenly without warning lost drive cv axel on passegner side broke and had to be towed. I called 911 and the police tried to put car in drive and car would just roll back and it almost went into the unit. when the car suddenly stopped I was just lucky no one ran into me, I was in the middle of the road & could not move the car.

September 6, 2023 my 2017 Jeep cherokee started making noises while driving and the service 4WD light came on. I called Quirk Jeep service and I was told to not drive it and have it towed to the shop. The problem was diagnosed as a PTU failure.

Getting "Service Shifter" warning light and Jeep doesn't have a resolution for this. I have not been stranded yet or paid for service, but based on what I'm finding, sounds like both are a strong possibility and resolution appears to extremely unlikely!

My daughter was driving her car. It started "jerking". She pulled into a parking lot because she was worried.

The car is constantly stalling while driving and then shutting off immediately. It doesn't matter if I am on the expressway or side streets. This has now happened two days in a row.

The car stalls out in the middle of driving no matter what speed at and says ' shift to park' and then dies. This is extremely dangerous when going at higher speeds. It also will do the same thing if the car is low on oil because the engine burns oil..this is a design of the car but does not notify the driver of the oil being low.

Several months ago the service shifter warning light began coming on randomly when starting the car and stayed on until the car was turned off. Then the engine light, park assist unavailable and service emergency brake warning lights came on randomly while driving.

Several times within the past 2 months, including today; when driving more than 25-35 miles there will be a "service shifter" notification and the associated 'ding' noise notification that comes on. This notification blocks any action on the screen between the speedometer and RPM monitor and only successfully goes away when turning the jeep completely off.

March 2026: The 2017 Jeep Cherokee Warning light appeared on the dashboard "SVC4WD" Safety issue with the four wheel drive system. A mechanics diagnosis code was determined stating a PTU failure. To resolve the warning light issue is to flush the oil from the PTU assembly and/or replace the PTU assembly. The complaint that is being filed is Chrysler has issued 3 recall on this matter with their 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokee's and my vehicle is going thru the same kind of issue. The recall 25V-011 / 01C PTU failure. I would like to understand why my vehicle is not included in this recall 25V-011. The repair cost is going to cause financial hardship. I'm hoping I can find the why to be included in the 25v-011 recall.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 80,758 miles - I began to accelerate from a stop light and heard a large clunk. Proceeded to pull over after a complete loss of power. Rear end noise in turns.

Had no warning lights. I heard a clicking noise under the driver's side of car. Then the next day the the car started lunging forward when put in gear.

I originally reported the issue in October 2023. Repairs had recently been completed to the transmission and I have still had ongoing issues. I have seen quite a few reports of the same problem I am having.

I financed a brand new 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk from a local dealership in July of 2017 that I now own due to a recent payoff in November of 2024. However, for the past 3 years, I’ve been getting a ‘Service Shifter’ message appearing with all P-R-N-D gear shift lights illuminated.

We fixed recall W47 21-017-21 on July 2021, PTU is damaged and broke again, but I do not qualify for the Extended warranty because this issue was caught early on and did not present any error codes or affect any drive ability of the vehicle yet. I see there is a recall W48 for those that already had the PTU replaced but still have the issue.

The shifter turns all red lights and service shifter appears in the warnings. There was a recall for this on certain VIN #s for the same make and model but Chrysler refuses to acknowledge the wider problem effecting others. They advise you to pay out of pocket and I can’t afford that.

In the middle of turning into a busy intersection, service shifter light came on and car is shutting off without warning. Huge safety issue could cause a collision while driving for car to shut off without warning. Numerous reports of this on the NHTSA, forums and discussions with no resolution from the manufacturer.

UNKNOWN Vehicle does not shift into gears correctly and can sometimes have unwanted acceleration or has loss of power at inopportune times.

There are various complaints of this issue on various websites and media forums yet no mention of the manufacturer making any attempts to resolve. I have also found the service shifter issue to disable the engine and not allow the vehicle to start which can leave someone stranded.

While driving 40 -50 MPH on highway 89 in flagstaff, az I noticed a dash message stating that the speed was too high to shift into 4 wheel low, about a minute later I noticed a dash message that stated the differential lock could not occur and I noticed that the 4 wheel low button was flashing red. A minute later dash message 4 wheel low was canceled and the 4 wheel low light stopped flashing.

Getting a service shifter message and the lights next to my gear shift all turn red. I checked online and it seems to be a jeep cherokee only issue and a lot of people who brought it in to the dealer for repair either got their car back without the issue being resolved or the dealer didn't know how to resolve it or the car came back in worse condition than before.

I was driving and all of my lights came on prnd and then said service shifter. After restarting the car the warning goes off. There are many complaints about this and when you take it in to the dealer they charge $180 to diagnose and then say that it is not the engine so it is not covered under warranty.

Service shifter message comes up in the message center on the dash, and prnd lights up red when vehicle is in motion. Pulling over and turning the engine off sometimes makes the message go away, other times it persists. Problem started at around 11,000 miles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 jeep cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated while accelerating. Additionally, the service shifter message was displayed on the instrument panel.

Car revs up like it shifted into neutral while traveling 65 MPH, loss of power, no acceleration. I was on highway and was able to make the shoulder safely. Several error messages popped up on the screen, place into park and restart, etc..

At 35000 miles I got a dash light saying service shifter. It happened again at 37000 miles. This time I shut off the engine and turned it back on and it did not clear the message.

My 2017 jeep cherokee has been randomly throwing a service shifter warning on my digital dash (the middle of the cluster) since 2018 I took it to waxahachie autoplex the dealer I purchased the car from and they told me there are no recalls. I was informed they could replace the shifter at my cost and that if I bring it back I will need to pay to have it looked at.
