ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2013 Tucson vehicles. The engine oil pan may leak and, if not addressed, the loss of oil may result in engine damage.

Fix: Hyundai has notified owners, and dealers will inspect for an oil pan leak, replacing it if necessary, and install an updated oil pressure switch, free of charge. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 181.

The contact called on behalf of his mother who owns a 2011 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that his mother received notification of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V063000 (Engine and Engine cooling). The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the oil pressure switch was replaced; however, the contact stated that upon having the vehicle inspected, the vehicle failed the inspection. The contact was informed by the technician that the oil pan was leaking and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number. The contact stated that the case was denied and informed that the vehicle was not covered under warranty due to the age of the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 79,300.

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at unknown speed, she heard a knocking and ticking noise coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The oil warning light was intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the mechanic informed the contact that the oil was low and needed to be refilled. The contact stated that the oil was refilled however, a month later the knocking and ticking noise was heard from the engine and the oil warning light intermittently illuminated. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V101000 (Engine). The vehicle was then taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the valve gasket seal needed to be replaced and oil pressure switch was replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, while driving from the dealer she heard the knocking and ticking noise in the engine with the engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle started to shake and went into Limp Mode. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number and advised to call the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 148,981.

WHILE DRIVING, THE RPMS INCREASED, AND THE ENGINE REVVED AND MADE A CLICKING NOISE. ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SMOKE EMERGED FROM THE ENGINE. THE CONTACT LIFTED THE HOOD AND NOTICED OIL SPILLED ALL AROUND THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ACCORDING TO HYUNDAI IT WAS A BOLT THAT GOT LOOSE AND CAUSED ALL THE HAVOK. RODS AND METAL WERE EVERYWHERE IN THE VEHICLE AND THERE IS APPARENTLY (HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET) A HOLE IN THE ENGINE BLOCK AND OIL PAN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. ENGINE HAS A VERY BAD KNOCKING SOUND AS DESCRIBED IN RECALLED CARS THAT CATCH FIRE WITH THE SAME ENGINE. I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR P.M. SERVICE AT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, AND THEY TOLD ME MY VEHICLE WAS INDEED SYMPTOMATIC OF THE NATURE OF THE RECALL (LEAKING FLUID BETWEEN ENGINE BLOCK AND OIL PAN), BUT THAT HYUNDAI DID NOT YET HAVE A REMEDY. WHEN I LOOK UP THE RECALL ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE, IT SAYS,"IF THE MANUFACTURER HAS FAILED OR IS UNABLE TO REMEDY THIS SAFETY RECALL FOR YOUR VEHICLE IN A TIMELY MANNER, PLEASE CONTACT THE NHTSA..." I FEEL AS THOUGH, GIVEN THE POTENTIAL RISK (FAILURE AT HIGH SPEED/POSSIBLE ENGINE FIRE) AND TIMELINE (RECALL ISSUED IN FEBRUARY - NO REMEDY YET AVAILABLE IN MID APRIL), HYUNDAI HAS INDEED FAILED TO REMEDY THIS SAFETY RECALL IN A TIMELY MANNER. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI TUCSON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED FOR AN OIL CHANGE. AFTER THE OIL CHANGE, A CLUCKING NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE AND WHILE DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HYUNDAI OF PERRYVILLE (343 N PERRYVILLE RD, ROCKFORD, IL 61107, (815) 229-0089) TO INQUIRE OF OPEN RECALLS AND THE REASON FOR THE CLUCKING NOSIE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO OPEN RECALLS AND THAT THERE WOULD BE A DIAGNOSTIC FEE TO DIAGNOSIS THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED DUE TO THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000.

ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, THE ENGINE WAS "THROWING A ROD". THE VEHICLE HAD A 2.4 LITER ENGINE AND THE SAME FAILURES OCCURRED IN THE SANTA FE AND SONATA VEHICLES. THERE WAS A CURRENT INVESTIGATION ON THE SANTA FE AND SONATA VEHICLES AND THE CONTACT WANTED TO KNOW WHY THE TUCSON WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 112,000.

HYDRAULIC TENSIONER FAILING RESULTING IN TIMING SLIP AND CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. OUR CAR HAD STOPPED WORKING WHILE TRAVELLING ON A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOURHOOD, AND NEEDED A TOW TO THE DEALERSHIP. UPON INVESTIGATION, WE FOUND OUT THAT THE TIMING BELT TENSIONER FAILED, LIKELY DUE TO LACK OF OIL PRESSURE. THERE WAS OIL IN THE ENGINE AT THE TIME SET AT THE CORRECT LEVEL. WE LATER FOUND OUT THAT THIS SIMILAR MOTOR ON OTHER MODELS HAS HAD A LARGE RECALL. PLUGGAGE COULD HAVE LED TO LACK OF OIL PRESSURE CAUSING IT TO FAIL. LUCKILY NO OTHER DAMAGE OCCURED DURING THIS INCIDENT BUT THIS COULD HAVE POTENTIALLY HIGH CONSEQUENCES IF TRAVELLING ON THE FREEWAY. HYUNDAI HAS SHOWN NO SUPPORT OR RECOGNITION IN THIS ISSUE SO FAR AND IT SHOULD BE REPORTED.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI TUCSON. AFTER ATTEMPTING TO MOVE FORWARD FROM A STOP, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED AND COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. THE CONTACT COULD NOT RESTART THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE MANUFACTURER SENT OUT A DISTRICT MANAGER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE BUT COULD NOT FIND THE CAUSE FOR FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 600.
