Owner Complaints (29)
Your brakes are locking up when you start moving, especially after the car has been parked on a hill. The issue appears to be related to your automatic brake system (ABS). This has been happening for several months, and your mechanic hasn't been able to identify the cause. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing the ABS module or related brake system components.

While driving your 2014 Hyundai Sonata, the hybrid braking system warning light came on. Multiple mechanics and the dealer diagnosed a failed ABS module (the anti-lock brake system computer). Even though you received a recall notice, the dealer said your vehicle's VIN wasn't covered by it. The ABS module will need to be replaced to restore proper braking system function.

ABS control unit/pump is leaking. I was told it's not covered under warranty or recall. Local mechanic states they can't repair it because the part has to be properly programed at the dealership. I've spoken with other Hyundai owners and they have had the same issue.
Lost all braking ability while driving. Had towed to a shop and they were finally able to recreate the issue. There are no error codes indicated when they hook up to a computer. Have bled brakes and still not fixed. They are telling me they've done all they can do.
Received recall notice on 4-16-24 and immediately called for an appt to repair ABS problem. I was told that the part was not available at this time and should call back in a couple of weeks. I called on May 2, 2024 and scheduled an appt. for May 7. After waiting for over an hour, I was told that, yes indeed, my car needed repair but could not be done at that time as this was only an inspection to determine that a repair was needed and someone would call when the part is available but they don't know when. I feel like I was given a run around.
I have a 2014 Hyundai Sonata, when I get in and press the brake pedal it is hard to push in and the car won't start till I try to pump the break pedal hard several times till it gives just a bit, then I can start the car up. I know there was a recall for the 2011 and 2012 cars, this report mimics the issue those cars have had a recall for. Once the car starts the brake pedal does work normally, till it sits and then it gets hard to push in again. I took the car to the dealer to be looked at and they wanted to keep it for a week before anyone would look at it, with $200 to start . I couldn't be without a car for that long so they didn't keep it.There were no warning lights and never have been. My fear is that the brakes will fail while driving..
My vehicle stopped on the side of the road in oncoming traffic and caused a back up because of my power brake system failing when it should have still been in good condition because I had just purchased my vehicle 7 months ago. The brake light came on made my car slow all the way down doesn’t go over 15 mph and has a skidding sound when braking and it happened again in the street away from home. And this has been seen in multiple vehicles such as the one I have.
While driving it suddenly showing error as “hybrid system warning, stop and do not drive” and “check brakes” then brakes are not working. I turn off the ignition and start car again, then no error.Went to a local mechanic to check codes he can not find anything. This is a serious issue to taken care off as if brakes fail on highway, we may cause an accident. Then I search in google and lot of discussions going around the same incident
From the time of my purchase of the car used in 2016 I noticed the the brake would sometimes make a squeaking sound if the brake pedal was depressed suddenly. In September of 2021 I noticed that a Brake Warning light would come on when starting the car. Sometimes the brake pedal would push to the floor as if there was no brake fluid pressure. I took the car to the Hyundai dealer and asked them to inspect and repair the problem. The problem was determined to be the ABS Pump along with the ABS Assembly. The units were replaced at a cost of $908.91. Later in June of 2022 the noise returned and the brake light again began to light. I didn't lose brakes but the light remained on whenever the vehicle was operating. I returned to the same dealer service shop and they inspected the problem and found DTC C1236. They checked pressure and it had 1054 Bar (needs to be 1000 Bar). The technician replaced the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit and installed a Hybrid Noise Fix Kit. The cost for these repairs was $3351.15. I am aware of problems with other Hyundai model cars brakes. I hope that our car is safe to operate or park. The dealer confirmed the problems for both repair instances. I do not know if any other authorities have inspected this. I don't have the defective parts. The dealer service center retained them after both repairs.
April 2,2022 I took my car in for an oil change. Immediately after leaving the car smoked as if it was on fire. I was pulled over by Walls Mississippi police department because they thought the car was on fire. I contacted Hyundai. They have not done anything to fix this situation. I have not been able to drive the car since then. It needed oil a week after the oil change April 2,2022. It smokes very bad. It has lost power. The engine knocks. I had to get a rental car at the rate of $1000 for a 3 week rental. My car note is $578. The car was repossessed today because Hyundai would not fix the car so I could go to work and pay my car note. I have numerous emails and receipts. No one helped me at Hyundai. They are making us pay our carnotes. Pay rental fees out of pocket. They only reimburse you for your rental once your car goes into the shop. All Hyundai dealerships have a 2 month wait time before they will let you bring the car in,otherwise it will sit on the lot for 2 months. I have tried 5 times since 2021 until now to get the recalls done. Hyundai Mt. Mariah Memphis kept the car a week and asked me to come get it because they did not have all the parts to complete the recalls. Hyundai Olive Branch Mississippi stated they have a 2 to 3 month wait time as well. No one has loaner cars. I explained this to the claim person Julia at Hyundai and no one did anything to fix this.
3 months after purchasing this Vehicle from a notorious car company, I have noticed while driving on the Highway that a hybrid system warning message has popped on my dash board with the check brakes light blinking and beeping. The car then started slowing down with the brakes not functioning anymore. The car is only usable again after you shut it off, wait for few minutes and turn it back on. After several investigations by a Hyundai dealer, it turns out the defective part is a Hybrid Power Unit of HPU.
The first time this happened I had just parked in front of my house and put the car into Park when I heard a chiming sound coming from the car, and the message Check Brake followed by Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do Not Drive on the dashboard. I did not drive the car for severals after this. After that, I started the car with no issues and was able to drive it with no issues but 4 days later I got the same message while out driving, I stepped on the brake and heard a grinding noise and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I pulled over, stop the engine, turned off the ignition, waited a couple of minutes afterwhich the car started with no issue and I was able to drive home. Today I took it to Hyundai garage for the service dept to take a look at it. I am waiting to hear back.
I was driving in a school zone going 10 MPH and a warning flashed saying "Check Brake" then "Hybrid System Warning! Safely stop and do not drive" The brakes then locked up and the steering wheel became very stiff. I was able to pull over and turn the car off. I turned it back on and the warning was gone. However, the issue continued a couple weeks later and would not reset to a drivable condition, this prompted my husband to take the vehicle to Sterling Acura of Austin to be maintenance. The Power Brake Booster was replaced but the warning still appears sporadically, just long enough to read and then turns off.
Brake light illuminated & brake pedal travelled farther down affecting stopping of vehicle. ABS hydraulic control unit is leaking brake fluid. Repair shop confirmed leak.
While driving the Warning in my dash appeared Check Brake Hybrid System Warning safely stop and do not drive. The front brakes sounded like they were rubbing against my tire. I stopped the car. Pushed emergency brake off and on (I’ve never had to use this before) turned car back on and it stopped. I’m worried it will happen again.
went to start my car-ignition locked, brakes are locked along with steering wheel.having a tow company to get my car to auto mechanic to figure out the problem.Worked fine day before-has been parked in driveway for about 13 hours prior,-no messages appeared -this is the first time ever happened.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT IMMEDIATELY STOP WHEN PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO LOOSE AUTOMOTIVE POWER. MOMENTS LATER SMOKE AND FLAMES WERE PRESENT COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. WATER WAS USED TO EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE LOCAL DEALER (FIVE STAR HYUNDAI 650 RUSSELL PKWY, WARNER ROBINS, GA 31088) WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT YET CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. INVALID VIN.
I JUST HAD AN OIL CHANGE NO MORE THAN 1500 MILES AGO AND I HAVE NO OIL IN MY ENGINE. IT JUST DISAPPEARS. AND IT CONSTANTLY MAKES A KNOCKING NOISE THAT HYUNDAI IS UNABLE TO FIX. ALSO I HAD MY BRAKES CHANGED AND WHEN I COME TO A SUDDEN STOP, THE BRAKES LOCK UP AND MAKE A LOUD THUD NOISE.
THE LOW TIRE PRESSURE CAME ON, SO I WENT HOME TOLD MY HUSBAND ABOUT THE TIRE WE WAS ON OUR WAY TO PUTTING AIR IN THE TIRE. I WENT TO PUSH ON THE BRAKE TO START THE CAR AND NOTICED THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD(STIFF), I WENT TO PULL OFF AND REALLY NOTICED THAT I WAS NOT ABLE TO PUSH ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE CAR. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE SHOP TO SEE WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT
DURING A BRAKE CHANGE IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE COMPRESSOR WAS NOT DECOMPRESSING AND CAUSING ABNORMAL WEAR ON THE BRAKE PADS. WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS IT MAY LEAD TO SAFETY ISSUES.
BRAKES LOCK ON CAR. THE BRAKES ARE BEING APPLIED WITHOUT PUSHING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKES WILL LOCK AND THE CAR IS NOT ABLE TO GO WITHOUT PRESSING HARD ON THE GAS. THIS HAS OCCURRED 4 TIMES. THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON 06/17/2018. THE BRAKES LOCKED AGAIN AND YOU COULD SEE SMOKE COMING FROM A SMALL FIRE BY THE BRAKE AREA AT THE FRONT WHEELS. THE CAR HAS BEEN TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN.
TOTAL CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE WILL DRIVING SLOWLY IN A PARKING LOT, BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR, FOLLOWED BY A WARNING LIGHT TO STOP AND HAVE VEHICLE SERVICED, AND ANOTHER WARNING HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE.
I HAVE A PUSH BUTTON IGNITION. THREE TIMES THIS PAST WEEK, MY CAR HAS FAILED TO START. WHEN I PRESS THE BUTTON, ALL OF THE LIGHTS COME ON, BUT THE ENGINE DOES NOT TURN OVER AND WHEN TRYING TO PRESS THE BREAK IN CONJUNCTION WITH PRESSING THE PUSH START ENGINE BUTTON, THE BREAK PEDAL IS STIFF AND DOES NOT PRESS DOWNWARD. THE THIRD TIME THIS OCCURRED, I WAS STRANDED FOR 1.5 HOURS. MY BROTHER CAME TO GIVE ME A "JUMP" AS HE THOUGHT IT WAS MY BATTERY ONLY FOR SPARKS TO COME FROM MY BATTERY AND FOR HIS CABLES TO GET SO HOT THAT THEY MELTED. I HAD MY CAR OWED TO ALLEN SAMUEL'S HYUNDAI IN NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX THE NEXT MORNING ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT BECAUSE THEY ARE UNABLE TO "RECREATE" THE ISSUE, THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. I ALSO REACHED OUT TO HYUNDAI AND WAS TOLD THAT SINCE THERE ARE NO RECALLS, THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND BECAUSE THEY ARE UNABLE TO RECREATE OR DO NOT HAVE ANY RECALLS, THEN I AM STUCK WITH A LEMON CAR. THE SECOND ISSUE I HAVE BEEN FACING (WHICH HAS BEEN ONGOING) IS THE SENSOR IN MY GAS TANK RECOGNIZES MY TANK AS "FULL" WHEN I FILL UP WITH GAS BUT THIS IS NOT INDICATED ON THE GAS HAND READOUT. AGAIN, THIS WAS BROUGHT TO HYUNDAI'S ATTENTION AND BECAUSE THEY CAN'T "SEE IT", "RECREATE IT" AND THERE ARE NO "RECALLS", THEN THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY CAN DO. AGAIN, THIS IS ANOTHER SAFETY HAZARD AS I MAY THINK I HAVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF GAS IN MY CAR WHEN IN REALITY I DO NOT. THE FIRST ISSUE OCCURS WHEN THE CAR IS STATIONARY. THE FIRST TIME I WAS AT HOME, THE SECOND TIME I WAS AT WORK AND THE LAST TIME (MOST RECENT) I WAS AT A RESTAURANT. I BELIEVE THE CAUSE OF BOTH ISSUES ARE SENSORS WITH THE BREAK THAT CONNECTS IT TO THE PUSH BUTTON AND A SENSOR IN THE TANK THAT CONNECTS IT TO THE GAS HAND. THE GAS HAND ISSUES OCCURS EACH TIME I PUT GAS IN MY CAR.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. UPON MAKING A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN, THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS FAILED AND SHUT OFF. THE CONTACT HAD TO MANUALLY TURN ON THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS EACH TIME THE FAILURE OCCURRED. MONTHS LATER, WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH IN TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NO MANUFACTURER RECALL TO ADDRESS THE REPAIR. THE CONTACT WAS NOT NOTIFIED IN WRITING FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE DEALER DID NOT NOTIFY THE CONTACT OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 15V568000 (ENGINE) AND 15V759000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000. UPDATED 05/11/16*LJ *TR
I WAS TRAVELING EAST ON US I90 IN CHARLTON MA IN HEAVY HOLIDAY TRAFFIC KEEPING A SAFE INTERVAL AS CARS KEPT BRAKING OFF AND ON AND SOMEONE A DOZEN CARS UP SLAMMED ON THIER BRAKES CAUSING A CHAIN REACTION. I HIT MY BRAKES HARD ALSO BUT DID NOT SLOW DOWN FAST AS IF I WAS STILL PRESSING ON GAS PEDAL I WAS SLOWING BUT NOT (RIGHT ?) OR FAST ENOUGH AS I WAS STANDING ON BRAKE BUT STILL KEEP MOVING FASTER AHEAD THEN SEEMED RIGHT? THIS HAD HAPPENED A MONTH OR SO BEFORE AND I THOUGHT MAYBE MY RUG HAD SLIPPED UNDER BRAKE PETAL AND OVER MY GAS PEDAL AS IT SEEMED THE HARDER I PRESSED ON BRAKE I STILL KEPT MOVING FORWARD AS IF BOTH WERE BEING PRESSED AT THE SAME TIME IT SEEMED VERY ODD OR ERIE AS I JUST KEPT MOVING FORWARD. I DID MANAGE TO STOP JUST IN TIME BEFORE I HIT HIS BUMPER. LIKE I SAID I THOUGHT AT THE TIME MAYBE THE RUG HAD SLIPPED OR SOMETHING BECAUSE IT HAD SLIPPED OFF THE HOOK ON THE FLOOR BUT IT HAD NOT REALY MOVED THAT MUCH AND I SECURED IT WITH HOOK ON FLOOR AND CHECKED TO MAKE SURE IT WAS STILL SECURE THE SECOND TIME IN JULY 3RD AND IT WAS . SINCE THEN I HAVE READ ABOUT 2014 SONATAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIER BRAKES THAT FITS WHAT HAPPENED EXACTLY ON OVER 800,000
100 % BRAKE FAILURE. 45 MPH,MODERATE TRAFFIC, 6:30PM THURSDAY MAY 7TH 2015, DRY PAVEMENT AND APPROACHING TRAFFIC THAT WHICH MADE AN ABRUPT STOP AHEAD. STEPPED ON BRAKE PEDAL, PEDAL FLUTTERED AS IF ANTI LOCKING BRAKE ACTIVITY WAS BE ACTIVATED. CAR CONTINUED TO FREE WHEEL FORWARD, I STEPPED HARDER ON BRAKE PEDAL AND PEDAL BEGAN PUSHING BACK TO ME. THE HARDER I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL THE MORE IT PUSHED BACK (THERE WAS NO BRAKING ACTION).THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP , AND HAD ENOUGH DISTANCE TO STOP (I HAD A MINIMUM FOLLOWING DISTANCE OF TWO CAR SPACES) BUT BRAKES FAILED TO DO SO WHICH CAUSED ME TO CRASH INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I HAVE OWNED MANY CARS SUCH AS DODGE CHARGER 2006 SXT/CHEVY MALIBU 2009 TO NAME A FEW AND NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. I'M THE FIRST OWNER OF THIS CAR AND THIS IS THE FIRST HYUNDAI I HAVE EVER BOUGHT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING AT 5 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND FAILED TO RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,750. ..UPDATED 05-27-15 *BF UPDATED 10/11/217*CN

CAR CONTINUED TO FREE WHEEL FORWARD, I STEPPED HARDER ON BRAKE PEDAL AND PEDAL BEGAN PUSHING BACK TO ME. THE HARDER I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL THE MORE IT PUSHED BACK - THERE WAS NO BRAKING ACTION. THE CAR HAD TO BE STOPPED WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. AS THE CAR CAME TO A STOP A YELLOW CAUTION/MALFUNCTION SYMBOL APPEARED IN THE DASH CONSOLE FOR AN INSTANT THEN DISAPPEARED. I WAS NOT ABLE TO SEE WHAT THE SYMBOL WAS. *TR
