Your 2006 Sonata lost power while driving with no warning light, and you discovered engine oil leaking and low coolant levels. The engine wouldn't restart and was diagnosed with a valve cover leak at an independent mechanic. Even after repair, the same problem happened again, and despite additional unknown repairs, the leak returned.

I HEARD REALLY LOUD SOUND IN THE ENGINE BUT THERE'S NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. AFTER OF FEW DAYS OF DRIVING AND THE DAY I DECIDED TO BRING IT TO THE MECHANIC, FEW MILES AWAY FROM THE SHOP THE THE LOUD NOISE IN THE ENGINE IS GONE THEN CHECK ENGINE SHOW UP AND THE OIL PAN APPEARS. THE MECHANIC SAID IT WAS THE OIL PUMP AND THEY SAID THERE'S A METAL SHAVING INSIDE THE ENGINE, WHEN THEY DRAIN THE ENGINE OIL.
THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTING GOING ON AND OFF. OUR 19-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT NIGHT WHEN THE LIGHT CAME ON AND IT STARTED MAKING A LOUD NOISE. SHE STOPPED ON THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY, TURNED IT OFF AND NEVER COULD RESTART IT. THE ENGINE DIED. IT BLEW A ROD. THE CAR HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE. WE HADN'T HAD ANY WORK DONE RECENTLY THAT COULD HAVE LED TO ENGINE PROBLEMS. THE MECHANIC SAID IT HAD OIL AND HE COULDN'T EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED.
CAR HYUNDAI SONATA V6 2006 STARTED DEVELOPING ENGINE NOISE WHEN I WAS DRIVING IT IN MY PARKING LOT AFTER I MADE A TURN.. CYCLIC NOISE SIMILAR TO THE ONE MENTIONED IN HTTPS://WWW.CONSUMERREPORTS.ORG/CRO/CARS/HYUNDAI-SONATA-ENGINE-FAILURES-PROMPT-RECALL IT HAS 104000 MILES AND IS NOT LOW ON OIL. MECHANIC SAYS ENGINE HAS TO BE REPLACED.. IT'S NOISE FROM INSIDE THE ENGINE AND DANGEROUS TO DRIVE WITH IT.
IT IS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS THAT THE ENGINES ARE BEING RECALLED FOR NOW. IT IS MAKING TAPPING AND PINGING SOUNDS. I HAVE LOOKED THE VEHICLE AND HAVE SEEN PEOPLE HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THEIR 2006 HYUNDAI SONATAS DOING THE SAME THING. SCRAP YARDS HAVE THESE CARS THERE WITH BLOWN ENGINES. MY SON IS HAVING TO PAY ON A LOAN ON A CAR THAT HE CAN NOT EVEN DRIVE. WE HAVE CALLED THE BANKS AND INSURANCE. IT WILL COST MORE TO FIX THE ENGINE THAN WHAT HE OWES. WHY ARE 2006'S NOT BEING RECALLED ALSO?
PURCHASED THIS SONATA USED 3 MONTHS AGO WITH 45,800 MILES ON IT, DROVE IT 4,000 MILES AND IT DEVELOPED A ENGINE TICKING NOISE WHICH NOW HAS TURNED INTO A KNOCKING SOUND AT 1800 RPMS GOES AWAY, THEN COMES BACK AT 2200 RPMS. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE TO ESTABLISH A CASE NUMBER. THE DEALER HAS REMOVED THE OIL PAN AND FOUND SHAVINGS SAYING IT NEEDS A "SHORT BLOCK" MOTOR REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF $5,800. HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA DENIED THE REQUEST FOR REPAIR TOTALLY. I FIND THAT AT 50,000 MILES AND BEING ONLY THE SECOND OWNER, THIS MOTOR HAD A DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE ACKNOWLEDGED AS A DEFECT AND THEY SHOULD STAND BEHIND THERE PRODUCT! THIS IS MY THIRD HYUNDAI, NEW 2005 AND NEW 2007 AND I'M SERIOUSLY IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW SUV BUT IF HYUNDAI WON'T STAND BEHIND A COSTLY DEFECT LIKE THIS THEY WILL LOOSE A 10 YEAR VERY LOYAL CUSTOMER FOREVER.
WHEN I START UP MY CAR MY CAR SOUNDS LIKE IN GRINDS THEN IT STOPS ITS THE CHAIN TENSIONER REPLACEMENT
VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON CHICAGO CITY STREETS AND TEMP GAUGE STARTED TO RISE SLOWLY AND I BEGAN SMELLING ANITFREEZE. LATER THE TEMP GAUGE ROSE SIGNIGIGANTLY THE ANTIFREEZE BEGAN LEAKING HEAILY FROM BENEATH AND SMOKE BEGAN RISING FROM UNDER THE HOOD VERY HEAVILY. UPON AUTO SHOP INSPECTION THE REPAIRMAN NOTICED THAT THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM AN AREA BY THE ENGINES' HEATING CORE RUBBER HOSES. THE REPAIRMAN REMOVED THE HEATING CORE RUBBER HOSES FOR INSPECTION AND FOUND THAT THE ENGINES' HEATING CORE METAL TUBING NOSLES/NIPPLES APPEARED AS THOUGH THEY HAVE BEEN DIPPED IN ACID. THE REPAIRMAN CONCLUDED THAT HEATER CORE METAL TUBING NOSLE/NIPPLES SEVERE CORROSION IS NOT NORMAL WEAR OR TEAR OR A COMMON AUTOMOBILE PROBLEM.
ON LAMBDA/LAMBDA II MPI SERIES ENGINES, ENGINE OIL CAN LEAK ONTO THE ALTERNATOR, WHICH COULD AFFECT CHARGING SYSTEM FUNCTION AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL AND NOT RESTART. THIS WOULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER AS WELL AS AFFECT POWER BRAKING AND POWER STEERING SYSTEM FUNCTION, WHICH WOULD UNEXPECTEDLY INCREASE STEERING AND BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT, POTENTIALLY INCREASING STOPPING DISTANCES AND THE RISK OF A CRASH CAUSING INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. EVERY MAKE/MODEL OF VEHICLE THAT HAS THIS ENGINE HAS OIL LEAKS ON THE ALTERNATOR AND OTHER CRITICAL COMPONENTS (I'VE REPLACED 3 ALTERNATORS SO FAR! ~$200 EACH! + LABOR!!!) YET ONLY A CERTAIN YEAR OF THE "VERA CRUZ" RECEIVED A RECALL BECAUSE THE COST TO HYUNDAI WOULD BE HIGHER TO FIX THIS ISSUE ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES (AZERA, SANTE FE, AND MY SONATA ETC. MODELS)
IN JAN. 2015 IT WAS ON A 100 MILE HIGHWAY TRIP. UPON ARRIVAL HE NOTICED THE ENGINE DEVELOPED A KNOCKING NOISE. I FOUND MANY 2.4L HYUNDAI'S WITH THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET. THE ENGINE WAS MADE IN INDIANA. IT SOUNDS THE SAME AS NHSTA CAMPAIGN #15V-568. IT NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. I CAN'T UPLOAD IT, BUT I HAVE VIDEO OF THE KNOCKING. I BELIEVE THE RECALL NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED TO EARLIER YEARS
THE CAR WAS EXPERTLY MAINTAINED, FOLLOWED THE SEVERE DUTY MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM UNTIL 125,000 MILES. METALLIC DEBRIS IN THE CRANKCASE CAUSED THE OIL PUMP NOT TO SPRAY OIL ONTO THE CONNECTING ROD BEARING CAUSING A COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE. THIS IS THE SAME THING THAT WAS RECENTLY RECALLED ON THE NEWER 2011-UP THETA II. THE THETA I AND THETA II ARE THE EXACT SAME SHORT BLOCKS EXCEPT FOR THE THETA II'S DIRECT INJECTION SYSTEM. MY MECHANIC WHO DID THE REPAIR WAS VERY SURPRISED SINCE HE ALWAYS INSPECTED MY CAR ANNUALLY AND KNEW I USED TO BE A MECHANIC AND MAINTAINED ALL MY CARS LIKE CLOCKWORK. THE REPAIR COST WAS $4,113.53, SEE ATTACHED INVOICE. THE EXISTING RECALL SHOULD BE FOR ALL THETA ENGINE SINCE 2006-UP NOT JUST FOR THE 2011-UP.
AT APPROX. 79K MILES, WHEN VEHICLE WAS TURNED ON YOU COULD HEAR A MILD KNOCKING NOISE, AND THEN IT WOULD FADE. TOOK TO DEALER THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. AT APPROX. 96K MILES VEHICLE WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AND VEHICLE SHUT OFF. COULD NOT RESTART. TOWED THE VEHICLE AFTER WARDS VEHICLE STARTED UP AND KNOCKING NOISE GOT LOUDER. THE NOISE IS NOW ON ALL THE TIME AND HAS A CYCLIC KNOCKING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE. ADVISED MANUFACTURER OF OTHER PROBLEMS WITH VEHICLE IN JULY OF 2015. THE ENGINE STALL HAPPED IN MID AUG OF 2015. HAD VEHICLE DIAGNOSED ON AUG 27, 2015. I HAVE UPLOADED THAT DIAGNOSIS. DEALER ADVISED POSSIBLE METAL DEBRIS, BUT SAID I WOULD HAVE TO PAY ADDISTIONAL FEES TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. THE DIAGNOSIS STATES THE SAME PROBLEMS AS THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V-568 AND HYUNDAI CAMPAIGN # 132. LOUD TAPPING NOISE WHEN RUNNING COMING FROM BOTTOM END ROD. NEED ENGINE REPLACED. THIS WAS DOCUMENTED BEFORE THE NEWS BROKE OUT ABOUT THE ENGINE RECALL.

I WAS DRIVING HOME AND SLOWED TO LET SOMEONE IN FRONT OF ME TURN LEFT INTO A GROCERY PARKING LOT. THE CAR SUDDENLY STARTED SURGING MAD I COULD NOT STOP IT WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO FLOOR. HOWEVER, I DID HIT THE CAR IN FONT OF ME, WITH NO DAMAGE TO HER CAR. I HAD POPPED THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE OF THE BUMPER ON MY CAR. SO WE WENT ON WITH OUR BUSINESS WHEN SHE FOUND NO DAMAGE TO HER VEHICLE. I HAD TO TURN THE CAR OFF TO STOP THE CAR FROM MOVING. I CALLED THE DEALER GLENN HYUNDAI AND TOLD THEM OF THE INCIDENT, THEY IN TURN TOLD ME THIS WOULD BE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR THIS TO HAPPEN! IT DID HAPPEN!! THEY CALLED ME AFTER RECEIVING THE VEHICLE VIA TOW TRUCK AND TOLD ME THE THROTTLE WAS DIRTY AND NEEDED TO BE CLEANED. SO I TOLD THEM GO AHEAD AND THEN ABOUT HALF HOUR LATER THEY CALLED AND SAID THE CAR NEEDED A THROTTLE POSITION ASSEMBLY REPLACED. THEY HAD ALREADY CHARGED ME FOR THE CLEANING OF THE THROTTLE, AND THEN CHARGED ME TO REPLACE IT ALSO. DOESN'T CLEANING COME WITH REPLACING THE THROTTLE ASSEMBLY? I THINK THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND TO SEE HOW MANY OTHER HYUNDAI'S HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. THEY SUPPOSEDLY CONTACTED HYUNDAI CORPORATE USA, HOWEVER, I HAVE YET TO HEAR ANYTHING FROM HYUNDAI. I REALLY HOPE ALL IS SAFE NOW????
VALVE COVER GASKET AND TIMING COVER LEAKING OIL ON THE ALTERNATOR. WAS FIXED BY A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN AUGUST 2013 FOR ~$1,800 (INCLUDING AN NEW ALTERNATOR). NOW EXPERIENCING THE SAME OIL LEAK ONTO THE NEW ALTERNATOR JUST OVER A YEAR AND A HALF LATER AND LESS THAN 20,000 MILES LATER. [XXX] 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS 3.3L V6. WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS AND WHY ARE DEALERSHIPS ONLY TRAINED TO FIX THE RESULTING SYMPTOMS AND NOT THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM THAT CAUSED THE LEAK TO START? THERE IS AN EXISTING RECALL FOR THE HYUNDAI VERACRUZ (WHICH ALSO USES THE HYUNDAI LAMBADA ENGINE). THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE VALVE COVER LEAKING OIL ONTO THE ALTERNATOR, CAUSING THE ALTERNATOR TO FAIL. THIS HAPPENED TO MY CAR A YEAR AGO (APPROX), AND I PAID TO HAVE THE REPAIR DONE. THE LEAKING ISSUE IS STARTING TO SURFACE AGAIN, WHICH CAUSED ME TO LOOK ONLINE FOR HOW WIDESPREAD THIS ISSUE WAS. THAT WAS WHEN I DISCOVERED THE VERACRUZ RECALL. *TR

MECHANIC SAYS IT WILL COST NEARLY $1000 TO REPLACE VALVE COVER GASKETS AND ALTERNATOR. CAR IS 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA WITH 3.3L 6CYL ENGINE. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS THE SAME ENGINE AND SAME PROBLEM THAT PROMPTED THE RECALL ON 2007 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V415000. THE EXISTING RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE MORE HYUNDAI VEHICLE MODELS THAT EXHIBIT THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS MERGED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED IT OFF. THE CONTACT RESTARTED THE VEHICLE BUT IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST THE FIRST GEAR. THE CONTACT TURNED THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHT OFF AND THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO PICK UP MORE SPEED, BUT THE CONTACT WAS ONLY ABLE TO DRIVE AUTOMATICALLY, NOT MANUALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED THIS WITH THIS CAR. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!! WHAT IF THE GAS PEDAL STICKS OR THE LIGHTS GO OUT WHILE DRIVING??? I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN AND YOU BET I WOULD SUE OR MY FAMILY WOULD ON MY BEHALF IF ANYTHING HAPPENED TO US AS A RESULT OF HYUNDAI NOT ISSUING SOME KIND OF RECALL. A CERTIFIED MECHANIC INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND DIAGNOSED THAT THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
MY 2006 SONATA V6 STARTED SOUNDING LIKE A DIESEL WHEN STARTED AFTER SITTING FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THIS CLATTERING SOUND CONTINUES FOR 4-5 MILES BEFORE SUBSIDING. THIS STARTED WHEN THE CAR HAD APPROX. 25,000 MI. I HAVE HAD IT IN TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS FOR A TOTAL OF 6 TIMES. THEY CHANGED THE TIMING BELT TENSIONER A COUPLE OF TIMES, CHANGED AN AC REED VALVE, AND LAST TIME REPLACED THE VALVE LIFTERS, WHICH THEY SAID WERE BADLY WORN. NONE OF THESE EFFORTS FIXED THE PROBLEM. IT CONTINUES TO GET WORSE. I AM TAKING IT IN AGAIN THIS WEEK FOR TRY #7. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 71,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE ENGINE CASING. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP OR SLOW TURN, "CHECK ENGINE" AND "ESC OFF" LIGHT COME ON. THE VEHICLE ACTS AS IF IT IS IN NEUTRAL, WITH NO GAS POWER OR BRAKE CONTROL, BUT THE CAR IS RUNNING AND ALL OTHER ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS ARE WORKING (WINDOWS, RADIO, ETC). IT SHIMMIES AND SHAKES. YOU HAVE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND RESTART NUMEROUS TIMES TO GET IT TO RUN PROPERLY. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND THEN SHUTS OFF. THIS STARTED ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED THE USED CAR IN 2006, AND IS INTERMITTENT BUT STILL HAS THE PROBLEM. IT WILL ACT UP SEVERAL TIMES A DAY FOR MONTHS THEN NOTHING. THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE, HAVING TO STOP IN SINGLE LANES WITH NO SHOULDERS, ON RAILROAD TRACKS, OR INTERSECTIONS AND RESTART NUMEROUS TIMES TO GET IT RUNNING AGAIN. A FIRE STARTED IN THE ENGINE OF MY TWO-MONTH-OLD 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA AFTER IT HAD BEEN PARKED FOR APPROXIMATELY FIVE HOURS. ON THE NIGHT THAT THIS HAPPENED, I HAD DRIVEN MY SONATA THREE HOURS FROM ATLANTA, GA TO ALBANY, GA AND PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY AT ABOUT 5:30PM. I SUBSEQUENTLY RAN A LOCAL ERRAND AND PARKED MY CAR FOR THE EVENING AT 7:30PM. THE CAR WAS PARKED ABOUT 2.5-3 FEET BEHIND MY MOTHER'S 1994 CHEVROLET CORSICA. AROUND 12:30 MIDNIGHT, MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR WAS BANGING ON MY WINDOW, YELLING, "YOU HAVE TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE, YOUR CAR IS ON FIRE!" FLAMES SHOT UP 5-6 FEET IN THE AIR AND IGNITED THE TRUNK OF MY MOTHER'S CAR. TREES NEARBY WERE SINGED, AND MELTED METAL AND RUBBER DAMAGED THE DRIVEWAY. THANKS TO MY NEIGHBOR'S QUICK ACTION, THE FLAMES DID NOT REACH THE FUEL TANK OF MY MOTHER'S CAR OR OUR HOUSE, THEREBY AVERTING A REAL DISASTER. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE STARTED IN THE ENGINE. IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THE LOCAL SERVICE CENTER, MANUFACTURER AND INSURANCE COMPANY WERE NOT THE PARTIES RESPONSIBLE FOR CONDUCTING THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE FIRE. WIDER CONSUMER AWARENESS OF THE NHTSA AND THE COMPLAINT-TO-RECALL PROCESS WILL ENHANCE SAFETY BY ENCOURAGING ALL PARTIES TO TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION AND RESPONSIBILITY. *NM

I PURCHASED A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA IN OCTOBER 2005. THE VEHICLE HAS DEVELOPED A HIGH PITCHED WHINE AT 60-69 MPH (2,000 RPM). I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO MY HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY HYUNDAI ENGINEERS THAT THE NOISE COMES FROM A DESIGN FLAW DEALING WITH THE VARIABLE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THEY ARE APPARENTLY AWARE OF THIS MATTER BUT ARE DOING NOTHING TO RECTIFY IT. THE NOISE IS LOUD ENOUGH AND HIGH PITCHED ENOUGH THAT IT COULD AND DOES CAUSE A DRIVING DISTRACTION. *JB
