SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2006-2011 Hyundai Azera and 2006 Hyundai Sonata vehicles. Water may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short .
Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began on February 19, 2018. Owners may call Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 172.

Your brake pedal sank all the way to the floor when you tried to stop, causing your car to roll to a stop instead of stopping right away. Your brake warning light came on. You discovered that your rear brake lines and crossover line were severely rusted with holes in them, which caused the brake fluid to leak. Fixing this will require replacing the rusted brake lines and bleeding the brake system to remove air and refill it with fresh fluid.

Your ABS warning light came on while driving. A mechanic found that water had gotten into the ABS module and caused an electrical short circuit. Even though your vehicle matches a known safety campaign (NHTSA Campaign 18V026000), the dealer confirmed your specific vehicle wasn't included in the recall. Fixing this will likely require replacing or repairing the ABS module and addressing how water is entering the brake system.

The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the brake pedal would fail to respond intermittently, causing her to depress it excessively. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the brakes; however, after the repair, the brake pedal failed to operate. The contact stated that the head lamps also had failed to operate as needed. The bulbs were replaced; however, the driver's side headlamp failure recurred. The bulb was replaced; however, the low-beam failed to illuminate and the high-beam was illuminating with inadequate lighting. Additionally, the contact stated that while at a complete stop after refueling the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start immediately. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The vehicle was pushed back to the residence with assistance. The ABS, ECS, brakes, and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact associated the failures to NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 08E021000 (Exterior Lighting), 13V354000 (Suspension) and 18V026000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 176,000.
I have had several things wrong with other models and my 06 hyundai Sonata having the exact same thing happening but the dealer ship wont even acknowledge the words from my mouth, or I get the speech outta your pocket. When I start my car its normal till I put it in drive, it starts pushing the brakes jerking my car leaving black marks in the road onetime. Its happening everyday for 7 months then after the brakes thing its like my car dies then esc light on my dash will light up and it drives normal. Then the sway bar, bushing and struts have went bad 4 times in the past year. The brakelines rusted into and currently going through the second time fixing them. pour brake fluild in and it does no good still none. The headlights bulbs have been replaced 3 times in 2 years now. they may stay bright for 3 months or so then they go dim so dim you cant see black ice till your up on it.
This is the third time I am having to replace the calipers on my car in 4 yrs. They keep locking up while I am driving & won't release. When it does thus it ruins my roters & grinds my breaks down.
DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND MY CAR JUST DIED OUT OF NO WHERE TOOK IT TO GET LOOKED AT ONLY TO FIND OUT THE ENGINE DIED CAR GOT SO HOT IT HAD TO SIT OVER NIGHT TO COOL. ALSO WAS DRIVING ONE DAY AND ROOK A TURN AMD MY BRAKES WOULDN'T STOP TOOK IT IN AND FOUND OUT THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE WAS CORRODED HAD TO SPEND THOUSANDS TO GET IT FIXED.
BRAKES ARE LOCKING UP AND THE ABS LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY COMING ON. WHENEVER VEHICLE IS IN MOTION THE BRAKES CALIPERS TEND TO STICK AND THE ABS LIGHT COMES ON PERIODICALLY. *TR

NOTICED A FLUID LEAKING IN THE DRIVE WAY. UPON INVESTIGATION, IT WAS BRAKE FLUID AND THE LINES RUSTED THROUGH. THANK JESUS MY WIFE WASN'T DRIVING THE CAR. THE KICKER IS NO BRAKE WARNING LIGHT WAS DISPLAYED ON THE DASH.
WHILE COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AT A RED LIGHT, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. LUCKILY I WAS VERY CLOSE TO HOME, BUT I HAD TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL VERY EARLY AT ALL REMAINING STOPS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TRIP. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, I DISCOVERED THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE LINE HAS DEVELOPED A LEAK ABOVE THE SUSPENSION SUB-FRAME.

RECURRING PROBLEM WITH LEFT REAR BRAKE CALIPER;IT IS PROBABLY RUSTING AND FREEZES UP,CAUSING THE LEFT REAR BRAKE PAD TO NOT OPERATE.THE RESULT IS THAT THE CAR ONLY HAS BRAKING ON THREE(3) WHEELS.THIS IS A CLEAR SAFETY HAZARD THAT THE COMPANY(HYUNDAI) IS NOT ADDRESSING.THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 150 COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE.THERE HAS BEEN A CLASS ACTION SUIT FILED WITH NO RESULTS.

CAMPAIGN #092 WAS REPLACED ON MY VEHICLE AT BEL AIR HYUNDAI ON 9/14/2010. THE VEHICLE WAS THERE FOR OTHER REGULAR SERVICE AND THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED. AT THAT TIME, THE SWITCH WAS NOT A PROBLEM. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND WE WERE UNAWARE THAT THIS RECALL WAS EVEN PERFORMED. I'M SURE IT WAS LISTED ON MY PAPERWORK. THIS WEEK, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND MY ABS LIGHT STAYS ON. I TOOK IT TO AUTOZONE. THE CODE WAS P0504. FAULTY STOP LAMP BRAKE SWITCH. I LOOKED IT UP ONLINE, UNAWARE THAT IT WAS ALREADY REPLACED ONCE. CALLED BEL AIR HYUNDAI, MADE MY APPOINTMENT, TOOK THE CAR IN ON AUGUST 29, 2014. I WAS TOLD BY [XXX] THAT MY CAR DID NOT QUALIFY FOR THIS RECALL. NOT THAT IT HAD BEEN REPLACED, BUT THAT MY VIN DID NOT QUALIFY. I TOOK MY VEHICLE BACK BECAUSE I COULD NOT AFFORD THE $160 REPAIR ON THE SWITCH THAT I REALLY AND TRULY THOUGHT WOULD BE COVERED BY THIS RECALL. I CALLED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE AND OPENED CASE# [XXX]. THE GENTLEMEN I SPOKE WITH GAVE ME THE INFORMATION REGARDING THE COMPLETED CAMPAIGN FROM 9/14/2010 AND SUGGESTED THAT I CALL BEL AIR HYUNDAI BACK AGAIN AND THAT THEY SHOULD REPLACE THIS SWITCH FOR FREE. I DID AS HE SUGGESTED AND WAS TOLD BY [XXX] THAT THIS WAS NOT THEIR POLICY TO PERFORM RECALLS TWICE AND THE REPAIR WAS GOING TO COST ME $160. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I'M A LITTLE UNHAPPY ABOUT ALL OF THE WORK THAT I'VE HAD TO PUT INTO THIS AND I'M STILL GOING TO BE OUT MONEY FOR THIS REPAIR. THIS IS A FAULTY SWITCH AS PER THE RECALL. BRAKES FAILED DUE TO CORRODED STEEL HARD LINES FOR REAR BRAKES. THE HARD LINES FAILED APPROXIMATELY UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT IN A PROTECTED PLASTIC CHANNEL THAT CONTAINS THE BRAKE HARD LINES, AND FUEL LINES. ON FURTHER INSPECTION BRAKE LINES ARE HEAVILY CORRODED, AND FUEL LINES ALSO HAVE EXTENSIVE CORROSION. THE POINT OF FAILURE HAPPENED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP QUICKLY IN A HIGH TRAFFIC SITUATION WHILE APPLYING HIGH BRAKE PRESSURE. THE BRAKE LINES ARE IN A PARTIALLY ENCLOSED CHANNEL - SO ARE NOT VISIBLE FOR INSPECTION, AND THE ISSUE WAS MISSED EVEN AFTER TAKING THE CAR FOR AN EVALUATION AT SEARS AFTER THIS ISSUE OCCURRED. SYMPTOMS OF THIS INCIDENT INCLUDED: SINKING BRAKE PEDAL, BRAKE WARNING LIGHT, LOW FLUID IN BRAKE RESERVOIR, AND LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. BRAKE LINES CAN FAIL - HOWEVER THIS WAS SURPRISING AS THE CAR HAS VERY LOW MILES - AND WAS ONLY DRIVEN FOR APPROX 65,000 MILES IN THE MIDWEST WHERE SALT WAS USED OCCASIONALLY (CENTRAL ILLINOIS). IT SHOULD BE EXPECTED THAT THE BRAKE LINES WOULD LAST AT LEAST FOR THE 10YR OR 120,000 MILE MANUFACTURE LIFETIME OF THE CAR. *JS
WHILE DRIVING IN EARLY RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, ANOTHER VEHICLE SHIFTED LANES UNEXPECTEDLY. WHILE HITTING THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE "JOSTLED" AND SHOOK AND WAS FAILING TO STOP. AFTER PUMPING THE BREAKS I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL AND BARELY (3-6 INCHES) AVOID HITTING ANYONE ELSE. THE MECHANIC JUST CALLED TO INFORM ME THAT ONE CALIPER PIN IN THE FRONT RIGHT BRAKES, AS WELL AS ONE CALIPER PIN IN THE REAR LEFT HAD COMPLETELY FROZE UP. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE FRONT RIGHT HAS DONE SO (FIRST TIME ON OR AROUND JANUARY 13, 2013). AFTER RESEARCHING THIS TODAY, THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE & MODEL. *TR
ON MY WAY TO WORK ONE MORNING I NOTICED THAT I HAD NEXT TO NO PRESSURE IN MY BRAKES. WHEN I HAD MY NEIGHBOR INVESTIGATE WHAT WAS WRONG, HE NOTICED THAT MY HARD BRAKE LINES WERE SO RUSTED AND CORRODED DUE TO SNOW/SALT/ETC, THAT MY BRAKE LINE NEARLY CRUMBLED TO THE TOUCH. I HAD TO REPLACE THIS BRAKE LINE FOR MY CAR TO BE SAFE. THE PERSON THAT WORKED ON MY CAR INFORMED ME THAT THERE IS A GROOVE THAT THIS LINE SITS IN, WHICH CAUSED IT TO SIT WITH THE SALT/SNOW THAT CORRODED IT. MY CAR IS ONLY 7 YEARS OLD, AND I TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF IT. THIS IS IN MY OPINION A VERY DANGEROUS. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING DOWNHILL AT UNKNOWN SPEEDS WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE WHEN DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT APPLIED AGGRESSIVE FORCE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKE PEDAL ALSO BECAME STUCK TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 66,758.
AFTER EXITING A RESTAURANT PARKING LOT I ATTAINED A SPEED OF ABOUT 35MPH WHEN A TRAFFIC LITE ABOUT 100YDS AHEAD TURNED TO RED. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND AFTER A FEW YARDS APPLIED THE BRAKES ONLY TO FIND THE PEDAL GOING DOWN TO THE FLOOR WITH LITTLE OR NO BRAKING ACTION. I GRABBED AND THE PULLED THE HAND BRAKE AS HARD AS REASONABLE WITHOUT BREAKING THE HANDLE OR DOING OTHER DAMAGE TO THE EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM. ALTHOUGH I STOPPED ABOUT 2-3 CAR LENGTHS SHORT OF AN ACCIDENT I'M SURE THAT USE OF THE HAND BRAKE PREVENTED A REAR END COLLISION. ONLY AFTER I HAD DRIVEN A FEW HUNDRED YARDS TO GET OFF THE ROADWAY DID THE RED BRAKE FAILURE LITE COME ON CONFIRMING THAT I HAD SURVIVED A SUDDEN BRAKE FAILURE AS OPPOSED TO A SLOW LEAK FAILURE. WITH A RATHER SHAKY HAND, I GRABBED A FLASH LIGHT AND WHILE MY PASSENGER PUMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL I FOUND THAT THE BRAKE FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM A LOCATION ABOUT 16 INCHES IN FRONT OF THE LEFT REAR TIRE. THE CAR IS IN THE YARD NOW BUT W/O A LIFT THE LOCATION OF THE FAILURE IS UNKNOWN. HUNDAI DID NOT SEEMED TOO CONCERNED ABOUT THE NEAR ACCIDENT STATING THERE ARE NO KNOWN BRAKE ISSUES BUT DID GIVE ME A CASE NUMBER FOR REFERENCE, THAT NUMBER IS 6046357. SINCE HUNDAI DID NOT SEEM TOO CONCERNED ABOUT NEAR ACCIDENT SO I WILL BE TAKING THE SONATA TO A LOCAL DEALER.

THE CONTACT STATED WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE ELECTRONIC STABILTY CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE RESTARTED IN ORDER FOR IT TO TURN OFF. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER DRIVING FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME THE FAILURE WOULD RECURRED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED, BUT A MECHANIC TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THEY BELIEVE THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE STOMP LAMP SWITCH FAILING AGAIN. DURING ROUTINE SERVICE INSPECTION THE DEALER MECHANICS REPORTED THE REAR DISK BRAKES WERE WORN "ALMOST METAL TO METAL". I REPLACED THE REAR BRAKE PADS MYSELF. THE DRIVER'S SIDE OUTSIDE PAD WAS WORN ALMOST TO THE METAL BUT THE OTHER THREE PADS WERE WORN NOT MUCH AT ALL. I HAVE PHOTOGRAPHS. THE BRAKES WORKED FINE BEFORE AND AFTER THE PADS WERE REPLACED. MY SON HAS THE EXACT SAME YEAR AND TYPE VEHICLE WITH SIMILAR MILEAGE THAT EXHIBITED THE VERY SAME PAD WORN IN A LIKE MANNER. *TR
DURING BRAKING, BRAKE ROTORS FAILED AND RESULTED IN DIFFICULTY BRAKING. GRINDING NOISE NOTICED FOR SEVERAL DAYS PRIOR. UPON CHECKING ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE WITH SONATA'S ONLINE, I DETERMINED THAT THERE SEEMS TO BE A PREVALENT ISSUE WITH SONATA BRAKE ROTORS PREMATURELY WEARING AWAY. AGAIN, IN 9/2011, I NOTICED THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE SAME REAR ROTORS, AND WILL HAVE TO GET THIS REPLACED. INITIAL COST WAS VERY HIGH, AS THE AUTO SHOP NOTED THAT THE ROTORS AND CALIPERS WERE BEYOND REPAIR AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *KB
STOP LAMP SWITCH WAS REPLACED UNDER RECALL IN SEPT 09. SAME PART WENT AGAIN IN APPROX JULY 2011. JULY 14, 2010: WHILE STOPPED AT A STOPLIGHT, I WAS ALERTED BY ANOTHER MOTORIST THAT NONE OF MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE WORKING. AFTER GOOGLING THE PROBLEM, I FOUND THAT A RECALL HAD BEEN ISSUED APRIL 14, 2009, NO. 09V122000, REGARDING THE MALFUNCTIONING OF THE STOP LAMP SWITCH. HAVING RECEIVED NO NOTIFICATION OF THE RECALL, I CONTACTED MY DEALERSHIP AND INFORMED THEM OF THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAD PERFORMED THE RECALL REPAIR ON JULY 31, 2009, WHILE MY CAR WAS IN FOR SERVICE. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THEM TO LOOK AT THE PROBLEM. THE RESULT WAS THAT THE "STOP LAMP SWITCH HAS CIRCUIT OPEN." THEY REPLACED THE STOP LAMP SWITCH FOR THE SECOND TIME IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN, AND IT SEEMS THAT THE PREVIOUS RECALL "FIX" IS NOT FIXING THE ISSUE. AFTER THEY REPLACED THE DASHBOARD I STARTED TO HAVE PROBELMS WITH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG LIGHTS GOING ON.THE TURNED THEM OFF AND STATED IT WAS MY FAULT. ABOUT THREE MONTHS LATER BOTH AIR BAG LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN. AT THIS TIME I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALER WHO LOOKED UP INFORMATION ON THE COMPUTER AND STATED THAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN MY FAULT AGAIN. SOMEONE WENT OUT TO THE CAR AND SHUT THEM OFF BUT NO PAPERWORK WAS WRITTEN UP. THEN ANOTHER 3 MONTHS LATER THE LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN AND THERE WAS ANOTHER CRACK IN THE DASHBOARD AROUND THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG. I CALLED THE ORIGINAL DEALER AGAIN AND THEY ORDERED ANOTHER DASHBOARD FOR THE CAR. AT THIS TIME I ASKED THEM AGAIN TO CHECK TO SEE ABOUT THE AIRBAG LIGHTS. THEY HAVE HAD MY CAR FOR A WEEK NOW (I STILL DO NOT HAVE IT BACK). WHILE ALL THE AIR BAG LIGHTS ISSUE WAS HAPPENING, THERE IS ALSO ANOTHER ISSUE WITH THE ABS AND ESC (ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL) LIGHTS ALSO COMING ON AND NOT GOING OFF.
