Car stalls at idle when you take foot off of brake in preparation to accelerate. Error lights and warnings flash on dashboard, car automatically shifts to neutral and it takes over a minute to restart. Inconsistently happens and Honda service technicians report there are no error codes.

Vehicle stalls after trying to return to normal idle after the idle-stop system has been engaged. Vehicle may take up to 5 minutes to restart. Vehicle has a fly-by-wire push button transmission so the vehicle cannot be placed into neutral and pushed out of harms way without the engine running (which it isn't since it stalled and won't restart).

Idle engine-off system on several occasions has failed to restart engine while stopped during normal driving. Car remains in drive and engine stalls. Auto must be completely shut off and restarted for engine to restart.

The Auto Idle Stop feature was enabled at the time. We came to a complete stop on the interstate highway due to traffic. When traffic cleared and I attempted to resume driving, the engine died completely and pressing the Start button would not re-start the engine.

When stopping vehicle at stop light or stop sign, vehicle engages an automatic engine stop (turn-off) when the brake is depressed. Upon releasing the brake the engine should automatically start and allow continued operation. On one occasion the vehicle stalled when attempting to re-start and would not start for several minutes while in traffic.

While idle at red light, the automatic idol activated when I press brake with consistent pressure. When I released the brake to start going forward and engage the gas pedal; all red light indicators turned on (parking brakes and shifted into Neutral) and the car fully siezed up. No power, no ability put car in park or drive.

Within the past two month, this vehicle has stall at least 5 times after the auto stop idle engage at a stop light and at intersection. The vehicle will come to a full stop and the auto stop idle engage but the vehicle fails to restart after I take my leg off the break pedal. I will then have to turn the car off and restart it before it starts again.

I have a 2017 honda pilot touring AWD (purchased in dec 2017) and experienced the auto-idle stop stall numerous times.

When the auto stop start is on when stopped at a traffic light or any stop for that matter the car sometimes stalls out or it has a delayed restart where the radio and car sounds like it turns off and then back on and then you can go. Sometimes it completely stalls and you have to put the car in park and restart it. It started happening randomly now it is happening more often.

The honda pilot is equipped with an idle-stop, where the engine shuts down to save on fuel economy when for example stopped at a stoplight. Over the last year I have had major issues with the idle stop feature 10-12 times. I will be stopped at a light, feel the engine shut off, then when it is clear to go I move my foot from the brake to the gas and the engine will kill.

Honda pilot elite does not auto re-start condition after going into an auto idle stop. I tried to re-start the vehicle by placing the gear into the park position and pressing the start button. This leaves me stranded at a stop lights and signs and imposes risk to self and others.

The auto idle feature in my car my car off completely and then won't allow it restart immediately. It causes a stall at lights. It often takes trying to start the car for several minutes before it will turn back on.

I just purchased my honda certified '17 pilot elite one month ago. I would notice that the car would lag when using the auto idle stop function, it would sputter, and eventually and now multiple times, it would stall out at a stop light or stop sign when I was in auto idle-stop and took my foot off of the brake to go.

The car had a piston rod failure and is available for inspection at the Springfield Honda dealership. The car was traveling at 63 MPH when the check engine light started flashing along with 6 system errors including the power steering. I had to make an emergency stop on the side of the road.

While driving my vehicle it begin making a rattling/clacking sound. The sound became more louder as we drove it home. The emissions system problems message appeared.

I am the original owner of a 2017 Honda Pilot and bought the car new. It has 142,549 miles and been well maintained and adult driven. The engine started making a knocking noise.

Car bought at 103,000 miles engine failed at 109,700 verified thru Honda Dearler with metal shavings in number six (6) cylinder. Started ... with check engine display and started missing.

In June 2025, Honda sent a warranty extension reimbursement for the 2017 Honda Pilot for the torque converter-DTC P0741. Since the torque converter was defective, I replaced it on 5/7/21. I completed the reimbursement form Honda requested and included the invoice and proof of payment.

My engine started ticking at 113k, had fuel injectors replaced, came back in shortly after, they said engine failed, replaced with used engine… that one starting making noises, they apparently didn’t replace those fuel injectors either, so replaced those. Now catalytic converter is failing at 145k.

While driving the engine started smoking and stopped working. Upon checking by a mechanic it was found that the engine had no oil and was shut. Regular maintenance had been performed on a timely manner and there had been to previous issues or any oil leaks.

- Emission systems problem despite changing fuel injectors twice -- Dealer found DTC P0420 . Performed 20-100 under warranty extension Dealer replaced the fuel injectors last year in 2024 when the emissions systems problem indicator light appeared and recently again on September 04 2025. The repairs were performed free of charge.

Vehicle Mileage - 87,200 In February I had the Fuel Pump recall completed after over a year of waiting for the parts to come to the Honda Dealer. I first noticed the recall being issued when I received my notice to renew my registration. Then, I received an official notice from Honda a few months later in the mail.

My engine randomly loses power and makes grinding noises. The vehicle is very well taken care of and serviced regularly.

Symptom: Knocking noise coming from engine. Diagnosis: Honda dealer removed oil pan and found connecting rod bearing material. Removed all connecting rod bearings and found cylinder 1 bearing had excessive wear and found bearing was bent.

(1)My local Honda Dealership (Herson's Honda, Rockville, MD), has diagnosed a knocking sound coming from my engine as a rod bearing failure, and they say I need a new engine. My 2017 Honda Pilot has only 56,755 on it, and I am aware my model car is now currently under NHTSA investigation as a part of the expanded probe of an earlier 2023 recall. It is available for inspection.

While driving on Interstate 4 in Orlando, engine suddenly seized and all components shut off. We were able to navigate to the shoulder, but vehicle was completely dead. We needed to use an auto transport to bring the vehicle back to Clearwater area where dealership confirmed the engine completely seized with an inability to crank, even manually.

The engine developed bottom end knock. We brought it into the Honda dealership and they opened the engine from the oilpan to conduct an inspection. The dealership confirmed that the crankshaft bearings have scoring and the engine short block or whole engine needs to be replaced.

Connecting rod bearing failure at 118,000 miles. Followed all recommended Honda service schedules at authorized Honda dealerships. Need to replace crankshaft, main bearings, #2 cylinder connecting rod and connecting rod bearings and all related gaskets, o-rings, seals, etc.

I owned the referenced 2017 Honda Pilot vehicle. I was having transmission issues, which there were recalls for. I went to an authorized dealer to have the recall addressed.

I noticed an oil leak in December before a holiday break. After noticing this leak I took the car to the mechanic. Upon inspection, the mechanic discovered the leak originated from the head gasket on the rear head.

My car for a long time has had the errors/emissions engine light on and when Honda has performed the diagnostic testing they say it could be the oxygen sensor or catalytic converter or fuel injectors or many other things...I've replaced the oxygen sensor recently and the light still on and doesn't go off. I think my car issue needs to be investigated and a recall performed.

2017 honda pilot brought the car to the dealer ship because I heard the engine nocking but there was no code for the engine at the moment. They told me it was the torque converter. And they told me that nocking noise was my timing belt.

My engine has a rod knock and apparently needs replacement. It is at only about 50,000 miles. The technician estimated the repair at $21,911.47.

Vehicle was taken to Honda dealership for inspection, and it was found that there was a large hole in the bottom of the engine block with one of the pistons poking through the hole.

Since purchasing my car in 2018 the idle stop sometimes seemed like it "glitched". It would take an extra second or two to restart, the radio would turn on and off and lights on the dash would flash, but the car still worked. Within the last few months I've had 3 occasions where the car just wouldn't start again when I hit the gas.

I just read an article which says the FEDS are investigating Honda Pilot SUV engine failures. The compliant being that the fuel-saving stop-start system on some Honda Pilot SUVs can fail to restart. I personally have experienced this issue at least three or four times in my Honda Pilot.

The auto-stop and -start function is not working correctly. When I am stopped at a light or in traffic and the auto-stop engages, the engine sometimes refuses to start back up when I take my foot off the brake and put it on the gas. In January 2021 our 2017 Honda Pilot Battery was replaced by the dealer, Anderson Honda, in Hunt Valley. On 25 July 2021, I was in stop and go traffic on I-5 South when my start stop function on my 2017 Honda Pilot Elite failed to restart. All the lights lit up on my instrument cluster. The Auto Idle Stop feature activated at a light, but when it normally reactivates (taking foot off the brake, placing foot on the accelerator, or moving steering wheel) the engine did not come back on, the transmission changed to Neutral, and some warning lights flashed. A car coming up on the light behind me anticipated me accelerating, but I couldn't start the engine for about 30 seconds.

Occasional he when the auto start stop function is activated the car will die and not turn back on. After the car has died and you release your foot from the break nothing happens and multiple lights will turn on the dashboard but the car will not restart unless you put it in park press the start button multiple times.

While driving my 2017 Honda Pilot (Touring, AWD) on the freeway at about 60-65 MPH, when I press on the gas pedal and try to accelerate, the pedal goes limp and goes all the way to the floor, the RPM's go to zero and the car gas pedal is not responsive. The car coasts and there is no resistance to the pedal either.

40,000 miles and after only 2 years of ownership, emissions problem dash warnings illuminated during normal use. Dealer diagnostic reveals all fuel injectors need replacement. Discovered that this problem is known to honda's to affect 2016 and 2017 honda pilot models.

Check engine light indicates an emissions problem at 52000 miles. Dealership recommends fuel injector replacement although vehicle has been properly serviced at every milestone. Many other 2016-1019 pilot owners complaining about the same issue.

The rods on my engine seized while I was driving on [XXX] in South Dakota. The car came to rest on [XXX] . The vehicle died on the most-traveled road in Brookings.

My Honda Pilot has been diagnosed with engine failure by Royalty Auto in Kingsland, GA despite having been cared for quite well. This failure occurred well before reaching the expected life of the vehicle, yet outside the warranty window and having NO symptoms before the sudden failure.

With no warning, the engine has completely stopped while I was driving. The engine will not turn over at all after that moment. All maintenance was maintained on the vehicle, including regular oil changes.

My Honda which has 120,000 miles is experiencing rod bearing issues. Honda refuses to help cover costs. I know there is an ongoing investigation with this year and similar mileage issues with Honda pilots so I am submitting this as proof of another case this is happening.

When the auto start-stop feature is on (which is automatically on unless manually turned off every time you start the car), at stop lights/signs, my car will auto stop and then when I let go of the break to accelerate, rather than my car auto starting, it will shut down completely. It does not have the power to restart on its own. This happens all the time.

Honda’s Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system fails to restart the engine from a complete stop at traffic lights, road intersection or when stopped in traffic when the Auto Start/Stop function is engaged. This has required the driver to shift the transmission to park to allow the engine to restart, once this did not work requiring a jump start in the middle of a busy intersection.

My mechanic has diagnosed the 2017 Honda Pilot engine problem as a rod knock. Currently, the vehicle is undrivable. The mechanic was surprised that the engine was NOT covered under the 2016-2020 Honda Pilot recall.

I was told it developed a rod knock at 87500 miles and needed a total engine replacement. This occurred 1 month past my extended warranty period, and I was responsible for the total engine replacement. This was completed 11/04/24 at my mechanic with a cost of over $7000.

Oil Bank sensors failed, causing the system emissions problem light to come on and essentially disable the vehicle in the middle of driving. It is a 2017 and had routine oil changes on time, there is no reason for the sensors to fail and put my car at risk as well as our lives.

I stopped at a red light and the engine wouldn’t start. It took several tries to restart the engine and after 5 minutes, it finally restarted. I had to put on my hazard lights and held up traffics on the road.

This car is equipped with an idle atop feature that shuts the engine off when the brake is engaged (for example, when idling at a traffic light). Upon releasing the brake, the engine should automatically start. However, in many instances the engine does not restart and remains unresponsive.

The vehicle will start fine from being parked but when the auto stop turns the engine off, the vehicle fails to start back up. This has happened a few times now in heavy traffic creating a problem with traffic flow, putting us in an unsafe situation. Each time this happened, the vehicle has needed jumped, creating additional issues with traffic and our safety.

Approximately 6 times in the last several weeks the engine of my Pilot has auto shut off at a stop light but then it will not restart when I try to go. I have to shut down the whole car and it takes several tries to get it restarted. The most recent time it would not restart for several minutes.

When driving the vehicle with the auto start/stop engaged upon stopping the engine will turn off at an intersection however it will not turn back on. It takes several tries for the vehicle to start back up.

While driving the car has been giving quick warnings that we weren't able to capture when the start stop was active. Today while at a light at a complete stop and about to make a right the car suddenly shifts to Neutral and prompts us to put in park, then once on park the car shut off completely. While at the light still on park we tried to restart the call, but it would not.

The issue occurs when the car is stopped (at a traffic light) and the auto engine off is engaged, when I lift the brake to press the accelerator, the car shuts off the engine completely, puts itself in neutral and requires me to put the car in park and restart (press brake and ignition button). I then struggle to start the car (attempting multiple times) and restore it to drive.

Our 2017 Honda Pilot has been having issues restarting after the automatic start-stop system idles the engine after a complete stop. This happened the first time about a year ago, of all places on the I-95 interstate highway during a backup.

issue is when the car is stopped and the auto engine idle is on, when I lift the brake to press the accelerator, the car shuts off the engine completely, puts itself in Neutral. So when I’m at a red light that turns green, when I attempt to go by lifting the brake my engine quits, that I have to wait a few and restart the whole thing,

A known a reported issue by others, the auto idle engine function has caused our car to completely shut off at various times requiring us to put the car back in park and restart the engine. This is a clear safety concern as it has happened at stop lights, on the road, etc.

The engine auto stop/ START feature turned the car off while I was stopped at traffic light. I attempted to disable this feature by pressing the Stop/ Start button which turned the vehicle completely off. I made several attempts to start the vehicle.

My 2017 Honda Pilot touring’s engine won’t turn on after stop while using the idle stop . The idle stop option has to be cancel in order to drive and stop with out engine getting shut off

Engine malfunction light comes on and indicates emission control problem. Low and erratic power. Checked code and it was p0430 related to fuel injectors and fuel pump.

Getting an emmissions system warning on vehicle. Vehicle has under 50k miles. Issue caused vehicle to lose power at highway speeds and was unable to maintain highway speed.

I take my 3 year old, 60k mile honda pilot in for emissions system problem light. I am presented with the following fault codes: 19-072 mil comes on with dtc p0430 or dtc p0430 with p030x, p219a, p219b (with software update) - include all parts from bulletin I need a full fuel injector replacement at the cost of $2,000.

Today, 01/8/2019, the emissions system problem warning appeared on dash while driving car at approximately 45mph. Vehicle was in economy mode. Just had the vehicle in the shop for b01 service two days ago.
