It keeps malfunctioning without any apparent reason.

Owns a 2012 HONDA Civic Hybrid. While driving ~30MPH, the IMA/braking/engine/charging/ABS lights illuminated. The car still driving but the hybrid system fails. Also, when starting the engine it switches to using the starter instead of the EV motor. The 12V battery will not charge and die soon, which increases the risk of a stall on the road, thus leading to a crash. The vehicle was taken to a Honda Dealer which suggests a Model Power Inverter failure. There is a Technical Service Bulletin: 20-030 (Warranty Extension: 2012-15 Civic Hybrid IMA Motor Power Inverter) related to the failing parts, however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The vehicle was not prepared. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000 miles.
I purchased this vehicle 6 months ago from a dealer. In the short time I have had the car, there have been multiple issues presented. Bluetooth has been malfunctioning (connects the disconnects), window regulator has had to be replaced three times now (window kept disconnecting from the track and would cause the window to go down sideways and get stuck), more recently the AC condenser went out (it was reported as the condenser has small pieces of metal inside preventing the freon to get into the system and cool the inside of the vehicle).
If we don't drive my car for a couple of days, we have to keep charging the battery. We keep buying batteries. For instance, the last battery was bought in 10/2022 and we're in 6/2023 and it's doing it again. This time we know it's not the battery. And before we were told it was the battery.

Randomly, while driving, ON THE HIGHWAY, all the engine dashboard lights came on at once. The car stopped working. It shut down in the most dangerous environment and it’s a miracle that we didn’t get into a car crash. Taking the car to hybrid auto repair in order have the codes read, there was a readout of P1440, B2993, and B2992. Doing research, I found the link which I included; it appears there is a consistent IGBT malfunction in the motor power inverter which is believed to happen after 100k miles but from different testimonials, can actually happen at any mileage. This electrical issue has been closely related to the air conditioner (which our car had issues with when purchased) with the summer months upon us, I can only imagine how many more of these hybrid vehicles will spontaneously lose power in the middle of traffic.
The bluetooth Microphone screeches for the people on the other end of the call. I cannot hear it. It was replaced once under warranty, however my car is no long under warranty and it is doing it again. there are bulletins about this issue, but no recalls as it's not a safety issue. just a money issue.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HONDA CIVIC. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE CHARGING SYSTEM WAS OPERATIONAL HOWEVER, THE SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE UPDATED OR REPROGRAMMED. THE CONTACT CONTACTED METRO HONDA (9399 AUTOPLEX ST, MONTCLAIR, CA 91763, (909) 542-9637) WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO MANUFACTURER COMMUNICATION NUMBER: 12/041 HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND CONFIRMED VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
I HAVE HAD TO TAKE MY CAR IN FOR TWO REPAIRS RELATED TO RODENTS CHEWING THROUGH ELECTRICAL WIRING. ONE WAS FOR CHEWING THROUGH FUEL HARNESS AND FUEL PUMP WIRES RESULTING IN REPAIRS THAT COST $915 AND OCCURRED ON 9/5/2018. I WAS DRIVING ON A MAJOR ROAD WHEN MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. I MADE IT HOME THEN TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE SECOND INCIDENT WAS FROM CHEWING THROUGH GAS LINE AND IMA INVERTER THAT COST $1701 AND OCCURRED ON 3/15/19. I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET WHEN MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED (CHECK ENGINE, BRAKE MALFUNCTION, IMA BATTERY, CHARGING MALFUNCTION). I DROVE HOME AND DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP. WHEN I WENT TO TAKE IT TO HONDA, THE LIGHTS WERE NO LONGER ILLUMINATED. I DROVE ABOUT 2 MILES AND GOT ONTO A MAJOR HIGHWAY WHEN I STARTED TO SMELL A STRONG ODOR AND THE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AGAIN. I GOT OFF ON THE NEXT EXIT WHEN I LOST POWER STEERING AND THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I BEGAN TO PULL OVER BUT THEN REGAINED THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AND LUCKILY MADE IT HOME. FUEL WAS POURING FROM UNDER THE CAR SO I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY DETERMINED I NEEDED A NEW FUEL LINE, NEW IMA SYSTEM AS WELL AS JUNCTION BOX. MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP FOR ALMOST TWO MONTHS, DURING WHICH I HAD TO PAY FOR A RENTAL CAR. THE HONDA DEALERSHIP TOLD ME IT IS COMMON FOR CHEWING THROUGH WIRING OF THIS SPECIFIC YEAR AND MODEL HONDA BECAUSE THE MATERIAL WRAPPING AROUND THE WIRES WAS MADE FROM A SOYBEAN PRODUCT, WHICH RODENTS ARE ATTRACTED TO. *TR
THE DISPLAY WHICH SHOWS ODOMETER, MPG, ETC FLASHES ON AND OFF. WHEN LOW ON GAS, THE DISPLAY CONTINUALLY BEEPS AND ADVISES YOU ARE LOW ON GAS, INSTEAD OF ONE TIME WHEN YOU START THE VEHICLE. REPLACED ONCE UNDER WARRANTY, NOW BROKEN AGAIN, PART # 78260-TR2-A11RM
CAR WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO START WITHOUT A JUMP FOR MONTHS. GOT 2 NEW BATTERIES. 3 NEW ALTERNATORS. KEPT HAPPENING. NOW I MUST KEEP HEADLIGHTS ON AT ALL TIMES, EVEN IN THE BRIGHTEST DAYLIGHT, OR ELSE BATTERY WILL BEGIN TO LOSE CHARGE AGAIN.
MY ELDERLY MOTHER HAS HAD MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ON HER 2012 HONDA CIVIC 4-DOOR LX SEDAN. SHE KEEPS GETTING THE 'CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM' WARNING LAMP ON DASH. IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS TWO NEW START BATTERIES HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED, AND A CHECK OF THE ALTERNATOR CHARGING SYSTEM LAST TIME INDICATED THE ALTERNATOR WAS GOOD. HERE'S THE UNDERLYING ISSUE...THE CABLING FROM BATTERY TO MULTIPLE LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN NON-STOPPED CHEWED ON BY RODENTS! HAS HONDA PRODUCED THESE MODEL CARS WITH SOME SORT OF ELECTRICAL CABLE INSULATION MATERIAL THAT RODENTS ARE ATTRACTED TOO? HONDA SHOULD REPLACE ANY AND OR ALL DAMAGED ELECTRICAL CABLES! THIS IS TERRIBLE WHAT MY MOM IS GOING THROUGH AND THE DEALER (WALDORF MARYLAND HONDA) JUST WANTS TO STALL AND TRY TO 'PATCH' UP SOME OF THE CHEWED CABLES, ALL WHILE DOING A HORRIFIC JOB WITH SOME SORT OF ELECTRICAL TAPE!!!! MY WIFE AND I HAVE A 2012 HONDA CIVIC WHICH SERIOUSLY IS A NIGHTMARE IN REPAIRS A LOT OF MAINTENANCE ISSUES INVOLVING ELECTRICAL AS WELL AS THE CAR LACKING POWER AND THE CAR NEEDING TO REPLACE ELECTRICAL HARNESS DUE TO THE WIRES BING WRAPPED IN SOME KIND OF SWEET TEXTURE THAT RODENTS SEEMED TO ENJOY TO MUCH. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AGAIN AFTER THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AGAIN WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENTIRE AIR BAG SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THEY NEEDED 24 HOURS TO REVIEW AND WOULD CONTACT THE CONSUMER BACK. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
THREE DIFFERENT TIME, THE CAR WAS PARKED OVERNIGHT AND WOULD NOT START THE NEXT MORNING. IT HAD TO BE TOWED. I WAS TOLD THAT RODENTS HAD CHEWED THROUGH THE SOY BASED WIRING INSULATION IN MULTIPLE AREAS, INCLUDING THE FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR, THE FUEL HOSE. THE MECHANIC COULD NOT OFFER ME ANY CONCRETE SOLUTION TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN AND I FEAR A PROBLEM MIGHT OCCUR WHILE I AM ACTUALLY DRIVING.
MY CAR WAS WORKING JUST FINE. ONE MORNING I WENT OUTSIDE TO START MY CAR, NEXT THING I KNOW IT WOULDN'T TURN OVER. MY DASHBOARD WORKED, BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T START. MY CAR WAS PARKED OVERNIGHT. I CALLED MY ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND THEY CAME OUT AND GAVE ME A JUMP. AS SOON AS THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF IT WOULD NOT CUT BACK ON. HE JUMPED IT AGAIN AND TOLD ME THAT MY ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY WERE BOTH BAD, AND THAT MY CAR WOULD NOT START BACK UP ON ITS ON. SURE ENOUGH IT DID NOT. MY CAR HAS BEEN DOWN FOR ALMOST A WEEK NOW. I PURCHASED IT MAY 2012, AND I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT UNTIL NOW. I LOOKED ONLINE AND I SAW THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE THAT WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.

HONDA DID A SOFTWARE UPDATE A FEW MONTHS AGO, AND NOW IT HAPPENS MORE OFTEN.
WHEN YOU BUY A NEW CAR YOU DON'T EXPECT TO HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, WELL THAT WASN'T THE CASE WITH ME. 1. WATER WAS LEAKING IN THE MOON ROOF ALL THE RUBBER HAD TO BE REPLACED 2. SO MUCH RUST BECAUSE OF LEAK 3. HEATING SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED WHEN YOU TURNED IT ON WOULD MAKE SUCH A LOUD NOISE IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE. DEALERSHIP SAID NEEDED A PART SPENT ALMOST A DAY AND THEN SAID NEED ANOTHER PART ,, CANT BELIEVE A NEW CAR NEEDS NEW PARTS. 4. TIRE SENSOR LIGHT KEPT COMING ON . 5.KEYS WOULD NOT COME OUT OF THE EGNITION . 6. RIGHT SIDE OF THE WINDOW WOULD RATTLE BETWEEN THE DASHBOARD AND WINDOW, TOP OF VISOR.. 7.NEEDED NEW BATTERY 8. FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. 9 SPENT MORE TIME GOING BACK AND FORTH TO DEALERSHIP WHICH I SHOULD HAVE NOT HAD TO DO THIS. 10. BATTERY WILL NOT CHARGE, ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY ISSUES. DOES NOT WANT TO CHARGE THE BATTERY MOST OF THE TIMES. THIS ECCO MODE AND CHARGING SYSTEM, MUST BE THE ISSUE. I AM A MECHANICAL ENGINEER, LICENSED.
THE CAR STALLED IN TRAFFIC DUE TO RODENT DAMAGED WIRES AND WOULD NOT RESTART. THE DAMAGED WIRES WERE HIDDEN, OUT OF SIGHT, IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, UNDER THE AIR FILTER HOUSING. THE DAMAGE SEEMED TO BE WHERE THE WIRES WERE EXPOSED NEAR A CONNECTOR (NOT COVERED BY BLACK PLASTIC PROTECTIVE SHEATH). THE ENGINE ROOM WIRING HARNESS P/N# 32200-TR0-A00 WAS REPLACED BY HONDA TO FIX THE PROBLEM. MY VEHICLE SPEED IS JUST A BEST GUESS AS I WAS RIDING THE BRAKE PEDAL IN TRAFFIC AND NOTICED THAT MY DASH WAS LIT UP WITH ERROR CODES AND THE ENGINE WENT SILENT. I AM POSTING THIS HERE BECAUSE THE INTERNET IS FULL OF RODENT DAMAGED WIRE CASES AND SOME PEOPLE ARE SAYING THAT THE CAUSE IS THE MATERIAL BEING USED IN TODAY'S AUTOMOBILE WIRE INSULATION. THERE ARE COMMENTS THAT SOY AND PLANT BASED, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY MATERIALS ARE BEING USED INSTEAD OF PETROLEUM BASED PLASTICS, WHICH MIGHT ATTRACT RODENTS (OR MAYBE JUST EASIER TO CHEW THROUGH?). CAR MANUFACTURERS SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE IF THEY HAVE SWITCHED TO SOMETHING THAT ATTRACTS RODENTS OR IS MUCH EASIER TO DAMAGE BY RODENTS. CAR MANUFACTURERS SHOULD DESIGN RODENT PROOF WIRING AND NOT LEAVE WIRES EXPOSED AND UNPROTECTED NEAR CONNECTORS. IF RODENT DAMAGE CAUSES A CAR TO STALL AT THE WRONG TIME OR LOSES AN IMPORTANT ELECTRICAL SYSTEM COMPONENT, SUCH AS LIGHTS AT NIGHT, OR ELECTRIC STEERING, IT COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS. MANY OTHER CAR COMPONENTS WERE REPLACED PRIOR TO HONDA FINDING THE ACTUAL CAUSE OF MY CAR'S PROBLEM. PEOPLE SHOULD BE AWARE THAT RODENT DAMAGE IS COVERED BY YOUR AUTO INSURANCE, "COMPREHENSIVE" COVERAGE, WHICH MOST PEOPLE THINK OF AS COLLISION AND "COMP.", BUT IS SUBJECT TO YOUR COMP'S DEDUCTIBLE. RODENT DAMAGED WIRES CAN BE VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR IF THEY HAVE TO REPLACE AN ENTIRE WIRING HARNESS INSTEAD OF JUST SPLICING SOME DAMAGED WIRES (IN MY CASE WAS $APPROX $1,700 TOTAL).
ON THE FIRST OCCASION, UPON TURNING THE KEY TO START THE ENGINE THERE WAS NO IGNITION. I TURNED THE KEY OFF AND TRIED IT AGAIN AND THE ENGINE STARTED SO I THOUGHT IT JUST MY IMAGINATION PLAYING TRICKS ON ME. ABOUT SIX MONTHS LATER, THIS OCCURRED AGAIN AND IT TOOK NUMEROUS TURNS OF THE KEY TO START THE CAR. HONDA INSPECTED THE CAR AND REPORTED NOTHING WRONG. ON THE NEXT OCCASION, I LEFT THE CAR WITH HONDA FOR A WEEK. THE RELATIVELY NEW LOANER CAR (HONDA CROSSTOUR) GAVE ME THE SAME PROBLEM ONE DAY WHILE MY CAR WAS BEING INSPECTED. I PRESENTED VIDEO TO THE SERVICE MANAGER WHEN I PICKED MY CAR UP AND RECEIVED THE SAME DUMBFOUNDED LOOK I HAD BEEN GETTING ALL ALONG FROM THE SERVICE REPS AT CARY, NC AUTOPARK HONDA. UPON PICKING MY CAR UP, I WAS TOLD THEY HAD FOUND A TECHLINE REFERENCE CONCERNING OCCASIONAL STARTER ISSUES WITH SOME OF THE NEWER HONDAS. THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE A COPY UPON MY REQUEST, BUT THEY DID CHANGE OUT THE STARTER. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION (BATTERY WOULDN'T CHARGE PROPERLY), I WAS TOLD (AFTER THE UPDATE) THAT THE CHARGING FREQUENCY SOFTWARE HAD TO BE UPDATED AND THAT IT WOULD ONLY COST ME $60. I WAS QUITE IRRITATED WITH HONDA TRYING TO MAKE ME PAY FOR THE SUB-PAR SOFTWARE ENGINEERING AT THE MANUFACTURING LEVEL AND REFUSED TO PAY A DIME. IT IS A SHAME HONDA SEEMS TO BE CONTENT WITH SINKING TO THE DEPTHS OF OTHER CAR MANUFACTURERS, AND I WILL BE LOOKING AT OTHER MAKES NEXT TIME AS HONDA IS NO LONGER THE COMPANY I HAD BELIEVED IT WAS. I WAS DRIVING A 2012 HONDA CIVIC WHEN THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP DUE TO SOMETHING IN THE ROAD. ON 12/24/13 I RENTED A CAR FROM HERTZ AND RETURNED ON 12/30/13. DURING THAT ENTIRE TIME PERIOD THE CAR HAD NO WORKING TAILLIGHTS AND PARTIALLY FUNCTIONAL DASHBOARD AND CONSOLE LIGHTS. THE CAR WAS UNSAFE NOT ONLY FOR ME AND MY WIFE BUT ANY OTHER DRIVER ON THE ROADS AT THE TIME. THE CAR WAS ILLEGAL TO OPERATE IN PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO AND INDIANA AND I WAS PULLED OVER THREE TIMES BY VARIOUS POLICE DEPARTMENTS. I CONTACTED HERTZ AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS TO HAVE ME DRIVE IT TO THE INDIANAPOLIS AIRPORT. I SUGGESTED TO THE HERTZ REPRESENTATIVE THAT THIS WASN'T ACCEPTABLE BECAUSE THE CAR''S CONDITION MAKES IT ILLEGAL AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE. ULTIMATELY, WE WERE LEFT WITH A CAR THAT WAS UNSAFE AND ILLEGAL WHICH WE RELUCTANTLY DROVE TO THE INDIANAPOLIS AIRPORT AT THE TIME OF OUR DEPARTURE. UPON MY RETURN TO PHOENIX I'VE ATTEMPTED, AS INSTRUCTED BY HERTZ, TO CONTACT THEIR LOCATION IN THE PITTSBURGH TO SEEK A REFUND. AFTER 16 PHONE CALLS TO THAT NUMBER I'VE EITHER BEEN CUT OFF BY THE PHONE SYSTEM BECAUSE THE VOICEMAIL IS FULL, SELECTED OPTIONS THAT LEAD NOWHERE, OR REDIRECTED TO EMPLOYEES IN OTHER CITIES WHO TELL ME TO CALL THE LOCATION IN THE PITTSBURGH. THIS IS VERY DISTURBING TO ME, AS THE VEHICLE ONLY HAD 827 MILES ON IT WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURRED, AND THE MODULE FRIED WHILE SITTING AT A GAS STATION (THE CAR WAS NOT MOVING). THE DEALER IS FIXING MY CAR UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE MERE FACT THAT THIS HAPPEN ON A VEHICLE WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE AND NOT MOVING IS A CONCERN - NOT TO MENTION THE PRICE OF THIS MODULE (~ $900.00). *TR
