Filed: Sep 2014

Your Explorer won't start normally—it just makes a buzzing sound when you turn the key. A mechanic was able to start it by using a screwdriver to bypass a component under the hood on the driver's side. However, once started this way, the ignition key won't turn off and spins a full 360 degrees without engaging anything, forcing you to disconnect the battery to shut the engine off. This likely involves replacing or repairing the starter motor and ignition switch.

All four of your car's windows intermittently stop working and won't move up or down, whether the engine is running or off. This happens randomly without any pattern. The issue likely involves the window motor switches or electrical connections that need to be inspected and repaired.

CrashFiled: May 2017

While driving at 25-30 mph on a city street, your front driver's side tire failed, causing your steering wheel to lock up. Your vehicle hit a curb and flipped over 15-16 times. Despite wearing your seatbelt, your airbags did not deploy during the crash. Your vehicle was completely destroyed in the incident.

Structure1 issue
criticalSTRUCTURE
Filed: Sep 2016

Your Explorer has experienced sudden unintended acceleration on three separate occasions between 1998 and 2015, requiring emergency braking to regain control. You've identified that the problem occurs when the floor mat shifts and becomes trapped under the accelerator pedal, particularly because your shorter stature requires you to sit very close to the steering wheel and stretch to reach the pedals. The issue stopped once you removed the floor mats entirely. A permanent fix would likely involve replacing the floor mats with ones designed to prevent pedal interference, or having the accelerator pedal assembly inspected and adjusted by a mechanic.

FireFiled: Feb 2014

Your vehicle caught fire under the hood on the driver's side about 15 minutes after you parked it and turned it off. The fire spread rapidly, engulfing the driver's side front tire and eventually the entire engine before firefighters extinguished it. This indicates a serious electrical or fuel system failure that caused the fire.

Rodents entered your heating system through an unobstructed opening in the blower fan housing near the firewall and packed the heater blower assembly with debris, which caught fire when you turned on the heater. You heard a loud noise, then the heater stopped working and you smelled burning. The blower motor had charred material wrapped around its electrical components. You'll need to replace the blower motor and seal the opening to prevent rodents from entering the heating system again.

While driving on Wisconsin Avenue, your truck suddenly refused to shift gears. You immediately took it to Wisconsin Motors Sales and Service, where they diagnosed a complete transmission failure. Filed: Feb 2020

Your transmission struggles to shift from first to second gear when accelerating—the engine revs high but the car won't move forward until you ease off the gas and try again, sometimes taking multiple attempts. You're also experiencing rough acceleration in higher gears, and recently had difficulty engaging any gear at all. Additionally, your speedometer and odometer aren't working, your power seats are stuck halfway, and your side mirrors don't function, which you've correctly identified as safety concerns.

Your 1996 Ford Explorer's wheels are developing visible cracks across the rim surface, which is compromising their structural integrity and stability. This issue requires prompt attention to ensure safe handling. You'll likely need to have the damaged rims replaced with new ones.

Filed: Nov 2017

Your Explorer's exhaust manifold fractured multiple times over 12 years, with the part costing over $300 and being on national backorder for extended periods. The manifold was made from pot-metal welded to steel, which your certified welder indicated will always fracture due to incompatible materials. The fractured manifold released exhaust fumes into the cabin through vents and floorboards, and Ford denied reimbursement requests even after repeated failures. The repair will likely require replacing the exhaust manifold with a properly manufactured unit.

highVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: May 2017

Your speedometer stopped working properly and your transmission began shifting roughly between gears, with the check engine light coming on. You replaced the vehicle speed sensor multiple times, but the problem kept recurring — a known safety recall issue with the speed control deactivation switch on your model year. You're concerned about driving the vehicle out of state due to this recurring problem and the safety risks involved.

Suspension1 issue
highSUSPENSION
Filed: Nov 2014

Your Explorer's suspension sways excessively when you accelerate or pass other vehicles, forcing you to slow down to regain stability. This happens consistently during rapid speed increases and creates a safety concern. The suspension system may need inspection and repair, possibly including worn struts, bushings, or stabilizer bar components.

You found a recall (09V399000) for your 1996 Ford Explorer's vehicle speed control system when searching by make, model, and year, but your VIN-specific search didn't show any open recalls. The dealership told you recalls only apply by VIN, but NHTSA's website indicates that safety recalls can be found through make/model/year searches as well. You're uncertain whether this recall applies to your specific vehicle. Resolving this would require contacting NHTSA directly or getting the dealership to check the recall details against your vehicle's specifications.
