2020 Ford Escape Other Problems

AWD system: sensor in rear axel causing "AWD system fault error". Without the functionality of my AWD system related to this malfunction I am left with a vehicle that can not perform in the conditions that may require AWD, such as deep snow which could result in me crashing. My car is currently at a Ford certified mechanic.

As a firefighter, I find it concerning that this recall has been issued for so long and no resolution has been found. The amount of vehicle fires that I see with reports of it "just starting to smoke, and then was on fire when I pulled over!" can easily be explained by fuel leaking into the hot engine compartment and combusting.

Informed by insurance company that there is a recall that could start a good fire. Still no remedy to fix. Have called a shop, takes months to get it seen, also says no remedy.

In July 2025 recall #25V467 was issued on my vehicle. The safety risk of this recall is that at any point fuel can accumulate near the engine or exhaust components and ignite resulting in an under-hood fire “increasing the risk of injury”. It has been over 3 months now and no remedy yet.

A recall on rear camera was listed. My vehicle has distorted image when damp and rainy weather. Can make out is behind you.

I have a moon roof with a canopy covering it, when you open the moon roof the canopy retracts also, my canopy retracts but came apart from the tracks on each side which causes the canopy to drop down and block the rear view mirror, which is definitely a safety hazard. I contacted Ford and no recall or TSB is available .

The exhaust gas cooler (EGR) leaked coolant into the intake manifold and mixed with oil causing the engine over-temperature light to come on, a burning smell from the engine bay, loss of power while driving and while smoke to billow from the exhaust.

Driver door is making a loud creaking or popping noise when opening the door. Afraid the door might fall off. Have not taken it to a dealer for assessment yet.

Getting AWD OFF, Hill Assist off, advance traction control off, no collision assist. This happened when put spare tire on and stayed after putting original wheel & tire back on. - The check arm attachment point in the door assembly on the driver's side door. The spot welds holding the attachment to the door have broken. It is available for inspection at request.

The passenger front door middle hinge broke from inside the door. There are numerous online articles of this happening and causing costly repairs of the entire door instead of just the hinge, which is Ford’s solution. Two days ago I noticed a creaking noise and thought I should spray wd40 and when I went to open my door to do this, there was a POP!

The problem appears to be related to defective spot welds at the check arm attachment point on left driver door. The window doesn't go down and the door doesn't shut all the way. Needs to be a recall ASAP before more accidents happen to everyday citizens!

The AWD module (LX6Z 7P238 AANP MODULE) went out on my 2020 Ford Escape. One day when starting my car several warnings popped up on the screen. The warnings were “AWD off”, “Pre-collision assist not available”, “Service Advanced Trac”, “AWD fault service required”, “Up hill assist not available” “Traction control system fault or not available?” and the wrench on the dashboard lit up.

First the car start showing : AWD,fault. Later hill start not available. Collision assist not available.

The left driver's door was making a popping noise. On closer inspection found that the door support bracket was broken. I took it to my local Ford dealer, and they confirmed the bracket was broken.

The front door drivers side is making a cracking popping noise and is not latching. Was never in accident. Dealership says it is unsafe and needs to be replace.

Service engine soon light is on due to the injector problem that has been recalled, but has not been fixed yet, because the dealer has not received the parts yet. Service engine soon light is also throwing a code for the catylitic converter and it’s causing the vehicle to run and shift poorly and getting worse fuel economy because of this issue.

I have a 2020 Ford Escape SEL edition. Purchased new from dealership in 2021. It was approx 720pm on Thursday 4/13/23.

I was stopped at a red light with my foot on the brake. The vehicle unexpectedly accelerated and crashed into the vehicle in front of me. Collision assistance did not activate, and there was no audible warning.

The vehicle started, but the dashboard was black and the wheels were locked. The radio, heat, etc. were working.

When at a stop light upon acceleration the car is very sluggish. I have noticed if I turn the air off there seems to be slightly more power. I feel the safety in this comes when a vehicle is moving excessively slow that it causes a potential threat to being involved in an accident.

Tl* the contact owned a 2020 ford escape. The contact stated while driving 1-2mph when the contact depressed the brake pedal, the vehicle did not respond and continued to move forward until vehicle came into contact with structure. The contact stated all air bags deployed with the exception of the passenger side curtain air bag.

Our pre-collision light keeps coming on for no reason. Northgate ford won't deactivate it for me. It goes off randomly and it's a major safety issue since I could wreck my escape.

While driving my 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid, I heard a rattling noise. I was having a hard time figuring out where it was coming from. Then I heard it again and noticed it was coming from above the sunshade for the sunroof.

I started getting warning lights that stated I was having issues with my AWS and hill assist systems. Ford is telling me that I need a new AWD module installed for $770. The car only has 51,000 miles on it and there are numerous reports on the internet with people having the same issue.

The sun roof opening panel shield fell off while I was driving. It covers the divider between the front and rear sun roof glass. Luckily I didn't have the shade open so it was just sliding all around the sun shade.

The vehicle has a safety system called hill assist start and auto hold braking. When activated the driver can take their foot off the brake pedal when fully stopped and the car should stay stopped until the accelerator is engaged. The first incident occurred about 5 months ago.

Sunroof Shade hangs down and blocks vision. The retractable shade does not roll up onto rod in the roof. Shade slides back and hangs down blocking all vision for driver to look in review mirror.

UNKNOWN December 25th, 2025, my vehicle started to shift poorly, breaking very harshly, giving a clonking sound when putting the vehicle into any gear, and when putting it into reverse, the car rocked roughly and threw a wrench light onto the dash. That wrench light gave a torque converter/transmission code.

When in reverse then put in drive the camera freezes while driving still see reverse.

Ford has CSP 22N15 that provides a one-time repair to reprogram the Gateway Module (GWM) for unlimited years of service and unlimited miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle. My vehicle was manufactured in Louisville in 9/2020, which appears to fall in the range of vehicles covered by this CSP, yet Ford keeps telling me that it is not covered and I was required to pay for the fix.

I am getting warnings on my dash every day, about TPMS system failure. Sometimes it shows all four tire pressure, sometimes one or two of them will shut off with the warning alarm, sometimes it is all four of them will stop showing. It is intermittent module failure, the sensors in the tire are working.

While driving and idling, strong exhaust fumes enter the cabin, especially when the vehicle is in park or stopped at a traffic light. Air recirculation shuts off by itself and the airflow is very weak even on high settings. Remote start caused the cabin to fill with fumes before entering the vehicle, leading to headache and difficulty breathing within minutes.

Chrome around shifter knob is peeling up causing gashes in drivers fingers. A key function to adjust gears that is causing bodily harm. Chrome tips were addressed on Window nobs due to Sharp Chrome peeling up.

The back passenger door is stuck closed and will not open even though the power locks and physical lock, inside and exterior door handles all function as they should. There is currently a customer satisfaction program regarding the front driver side door 23B56 however the local Ford Dealership will not fix the issue because it is not the front door.

The front driver doors latch has snapped and no longer catches the door. The door clicked every time it opened and shut a few times before a loud pop/crack noise and now it won’t latch properly

My vehicle has had a recall for awhile and I have been unable to drive because it has a fuel injector recall and no parts have been made and they don’t know when they’re going to be made.

The sunshade fell of the tracks due to a malfunction with the slide being hit by the guard piece that is attached by adhesive pads and is sagging. The sunshade fell on our head while trying to retract it when it broke. I did take the vehicle to the dealership and it is not covered by the dealership’s extended warranty.

Moonroof shade trim failure causing moonroof shade to derail. Requires extensive disassembly to repair.

Have reported this incident before but we now know what caused the issue. Sunroof on the vehicle malfunctioned causing horrendous loud noise along with inability to retract or open the cover. A large heavy peice was then found sliding around between the cover and the sunroof itself.

Door on drivers side makes all kinds of noise when opening or closing. Cannot roll window down, cannot use key to open door automatically, at times hard to close sounds like something is catching.

The sunroof trim fell down while I was driving. This caused the sunshade to retract completely. It is available for inspection upon request.

Check engine light came on and car died at stop sign and wouldn’t restart. This happened multiple times after filling up car with gas. I took it to my dealership and they said it was the purge valve.

The sunroof shade rolled all the way back, detaching itself from the motors that move it. The guard plate between the sunroof and the moonroof fell off as it is held in place by double-sided tape tabs, landing on top of the shade which likely caused the issue.

While driving my 2020 Ford Escape, the internal guard plate located between the panoramic sunroof and the moonroof suddenly detached. It fell onto the retractable sunroof shade, jamming it and making it completely inoperable. As a result, the sunroof shade can no longer open or close, and the roof does not fully seal shut.

Sunroof on the vehicle has not been used in awhile and is rarely used. Started with a vacation attempted to open it and heard a very unpleasant sound. Promptly shut it didn't think much about it as we were out of state.

From the day I purchased the car, it has not been able to connect to the Commonwealth of MA's inspection computer system. Ford and the inspection garages I've taken this to said it was a known problem and waived the inspection until Ford remedied their software to make it work.

I have a door bracket that has broke. I contacted my Ford Dealer in early September roughly. A door was supposedly ordered.

I had warning lights flashing on my dashboard continuously "parking assist off" "AWD off" "Collison Assist Off" I could not change my car over to snow, ice, or deep snow it all showed not available. This happened 3 or 4 days before I took it back to the dealership. I researched online and found out there were a lot of complaints about the 2020 Ford Escape 2.0 Titanium which is what my car is.

Receiving multiple errors and Ford determined it is the AWD module that needs to be replaced. However, they say my vehicle is not included in the recall based on vehicle identification number.

When the sun/moon roof was opened a metal piece holding it together fell off.it weighs a couple pounds and can come forward and hit someone, driver included.. It was held on by double sided tape. We checked you tube and saw others from 2020 to 2023 are also having this happen it cannot be repaired by the owner.

Received customer satisfaction bulletin 23B56. Door reinforcement can crack and door pulls away from car Salinas Valley Ford had my car for 6 weeks. Claims they have no ETA on door arrival Won’t pay for rental car any longer.

This is a safety issue that can occur without warning and a repeated failure, Ford repairs were not effective. The trim piece that goes in between the big and small parts of the glass on the sunroof keeps falling off and has caused over $500 in repairs because it jammed and broke the $15 rail clips that are not covered under the warranty.

1.) My backup camera has failed, and it is static and then continues today will not display and shows black. I can no longer use it or see out of it for backup purposes. 2.) I use my back up camera everyday as I live in a busy city and use it when parking and to assist me when there is a lot happening with parking on the side of the road and entering and exiting parking spots.

The welded part in the door broke. Door quit staying open, would shut on your leg. Horrible noise before it broke completely.

The driver side of door just started being hard to open, makes loud noise like the hinges are catching…. Along with that the day after that began, the window won’t go down. Driving's door hinge is broken. There was a investigation by NHTSA and it was closed due to Ford promising to fix doors to cutsomters satisfaction. Ford will only pay $1200 for at least a $3000 repair.

I began to smell exhaust fumes inside the vehicle. This persisted for several days and I brought it in to the Ford Dealer. They found that there’s an exhaust leak down at the oxygen sensor that doesn’t seal against the catalytic converter.

The car door on the drivers side opened and then refused to shut. It is a safety risk because it is unable to be operated and caused bruises when it swung shut. The dealer confirmed this is an ongoing issue but refused to cover costs to fix it because I am 473 miles out of the 36,000 mileage.

I have a failure of the spot welds of the door check arm in my vehicles driver-side door (3-days ago on Monday, 03/18/24). It has broken off. This arm ensures the door safely closes.

The turbo started leaking coolant internally making a few components fail in the motor. It has a really strong smell of burnt coolant. It started leaking about one year and half ago according to the service manger it was leaking before replacing the turbo and there was a failure to inform me about that issue.

So there is multiple issues with my vehicle. First: I had the recall issue with the fuel injector "fixed" as the dealer stated. Now CO2 is leaking into my cabin when the car is parked and/ or when the remote start is activated.

Driver's side front door: hinges are not working properly. Initially, the door made three cracking noises when I opened the door on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. I called my Ford dealer (AutonationFord, Scottsdale, AZ) on Wednesday to speak to my Ford Service Advisor Kevin Morgan.

The front driver side door suddenly started making a clicking noise when opening the door. It looks like the front welds on the door arm are broke which is causing the noise. Vehicle only has 36400 miles on it.

Driver side door started to make a noise while using it. Shortly after the door was hard to close and open at the same time and a pop sound happened and door could not close at all due to door arm breaking loose inside of door. I had to take the door apart and try to get the arm out which was a battle but I managed.

I have been informed that the "door check welds" inside the driver side front door have cracked an separated, that it is not repairable and the door must be replaced. I took the car to the dealer I purchased it from and had it inspected by Ford certified technicians. The vehicle has not, as of this time, been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance company.

I am reporting a weld malfunction on the driver's side door for the check arm assembly. I started to hear a log poping noise out of the blue one day. And the next thing I knew the door was not opening properly.

We noticed a loud "popping" sound in the hinge of the driver side front door. The door was unstable and we had trouble shutting the door. After research we realized this could be a problem that could cause the door to open while driving.

The center hinge connecting the driver's side door to the car has become disconnected as if it is no longer welded to the car door. This hinge limits how far the door can swing open. The concern is the door being unable to close completely and the window mechanism not working properly.

I contacted the Ted Russell Dealership in Knoxville Tennessee in regards to a recall. I was informed that Ford was no longer sending our parts and that the dealership would not do the repair. I asked if they would be receiving parts and they said they didn’t know.

My wife sliced her finger open using the up/down button to raise/ lower the driver window. The silver metal part of the button is very sharp. The passenger side is the same way.

Titanium or SEL editions have a 10 speaker B&O stereo with a 6x9 ‘subwoofer’ located in the right rear cargo area. The speaker hums/vibrates/shakes loudly through all volume levels - it is a KNOWN issue with Ford that the screws securing the speaker in to its mount are cheap and often come loose, casing loud vibrations. Tightening them back up is time consuming and only a temporary fix

My vehicle has been in the shop (northgate ford) so many times and they said that there's nothing wrong. The service manager went out with us and saw it wasn't working properly. My car isn't safe to drive as the lane keeping system tried taking me off the road so many times.

Hello, my name is [xxx]. I recently purchased a new vehicle, a 2020 ford escape sel, and I have been telling my car dealerships about my backup camera how it just goes entirely black, and it said that the camera is unable to work. I have expressed my car dealerships about it.

When I put the vehicle in 'park' on a flat surface, the e-brake turns on automatically, but when I park on a slight incline, this does not happen. Additionally, when stopped at lights, I noticed that the vehicle was no longer turning the engine off when at a complete stop.

The backup camera has been checked and "repaired" twice. The monitor within the last five days has ran a gamete of problems ranging in not displaying an image to the image being distorted with a series of lines that move vertically up and down.

When I open my sunroof the headliner sags and it blocks my view of the back window all together. Because of the location it is.

Moonroof/sunroof shade came off tracks upon normal use (opening) and is loose. The shade falling down impairs visibility of the road.

Orange wrench light came on. Hooked it to a computer and it stated p093a:00 . I know some escapes had recalls in regards to this but the built date ended 7.2020.

Molding between 2 parts of sunroof came off knocking the sunroof cover off its track. This is caused it to fall on driver's head.

This problem is well documented and many other owners have had the same issue with the Ford Escape for many model years including 2020. When the car is left in the heat which is unavoidable these days and the gear shift knob is in the direct sunlight from the windshield it becomes locked. The knob will not turn out of the park position.

While driving the sunshade cover became detached at the front and fell down. This restricted my view out of the back of the car causing a dangerous situation as I was driving down the highway and the only one in the car. It seems like the adhesive holding it failed.

The shade on the moonroof dislodged making it difficult to see out of my rear window.

Rear lift gate or hatch fully opens then immediately and swiftly drops back down to about halfway. This has caused minor injuries by striking me as I approached the rear compartment and the hatch came back down unexpectedly. I have tried all the DIY fixes that I found online.

The sunroof headliner came separated from a component and the entire headliner fell.. hitting my child and not allowing me to visibly see while on the interstate. My entire vision behind me was impacted.

I have 2 recalls on my vehicle and every time I tried to schedule the service I was told that they couldn’t because the parts were on back order and they didn’t know when they could get them in. It’s been 2 years.

I have a vista panoramic sun roof. There is a plastic decorative piece that covers the area between the normal sunroof and the expanded sunroof... That is only held in place with dbl sided tape.

If the car is parked in the sun on a hot day, there are times when the car turns on but you cannot shift out of park. The knob will not turn. You are stuck until the car is able to shift.

My driver side door started creaking the other day now I can barely open it and then it just opens on me when I least expect it.

My Escape only has 60k miles on it. I got off work and needed to open my passenger door to get my work bag. Being a single mom, my kids ride in the back and the passenger seat is rarely used.

Gateway module for inspections does not read or register when my car needs an inspection.

UNKNOWN: I have a 2020 Ford Escape with a driver door "hinge arm" that has disconnected due to failed spot welds. The drivers window now does not operate.

Failure in the driver side front door control arm. After researching, there appears to be spot weld failures where the arm attaches to do door itself. It seems my vehicle is having the same issue.

Driver side door check arm sounds broken. Opened driver side door picking up dinner and it made loud popping cracking sound then felt like it dropped off hinge some so I lifted up quickly to close door. It’s not latching properly.

Had Driver Front door welds broke on the inside of the door about one year ago and now the passenger front door has the same issue

My vehicle is one of the 2020 Ford Escapes with the broken spot welds on the door control arm. I can no longer operate the driver-side window and Ford wants $2500 to replace the door.

Door check bracket is popping/clicking as I close & open my drivers side door. Also the window can only roll down 25% of the way now because of the bracket failure

Cracked broken well spots on front left door (driver door) at the check arm attach attachment points in door assembly. Prevent driver window from opening or closing.

Previous my drivers side check arm broke and as of tonight my passenger check arm is broken as well. I do not have pictures as it is dark outside

It’s a welding issue with the door arm and that’s a widespread issue but not a recall yet. It happened on my previous Ford Escape as well.

Driver side door suddenly began creaking and popping when opening and closing. Not sure if it’s safe to open or close the door, not sure what happened to it or what’s wrong.

Door would make popping sound when opening and closing front driver side door. Window will roll down slowly and up slowly. Stopped using for fear of window getting stuck in down position.

The driver door panel is not welded properly which cause the door to crack when you open it and the arm of the door is broke. I took the vehicle to the shop and they stated that it a welding problem with Ford my issues and now I have to pay for the door. I feel ford need to recall the vehicle and fix the issue free of charge

My driver side door all of a sudden started making popping sounds when opening and closing. Got to the point where I could not close the door. I had to disarm the mechanism that was popping.

Driver's side door is broken. Started with popping sounds, then just snapped. Door can open and close but automatic window cannot be used.

Driver side door and power window malfunction

The driver’s side door has started creaking and having difficult shutting as of this afternoon. Looked closer at the door and the door limiting arm/ check arm seems to be defective and causing resistance and the creaking sounds. The spot welds on the door by the arm have completely come apart.

Driver door popping and cracking arm weld broken

Recall 22n17 needs to include the gear knob for the chrome peeling. It cut my finger and thumb.

Rear camera stops working.

My compressor went out during a road trip and it spread metal particles through the entire AC system, ruining basically the whole thing. My concern is the sheer number of ford escapes that seem to be having issues with their compressors. So many that the part is on back order almost everywhere.

Broken spot welds in the left front door at the check arm attachment point in the door assembly. Window not operable. Door difficult to close due to interference of broken bracket inside door assembly.

The welding at the door check has completely come apart on the driver door and is popping in the passenger door. The driver window no longer rolls down.

My door all of a sudden started popping and now the window will not go down and the door will not lock. The welded spots to hold on the door henge thing is gone and the henge is free moving in the door but still attached to the frame.

I just took my 2020 Ford Escape (bought new) into Maryland State Emissions for testing, they informed me that many Ford models do not connect with the computer at MD State Emissions. When I took the car back to Ford for a software up grade they said they could not sell a car without passing emission for MD State. However they would perform the upgrade and charge me.

Lt door is very hard to close, does not open properly. Lt door check arm weld broke.

Driving down the road the car kicked off an error that said vehicle network communication error. We lost all lights, all controls, and started loosing power to the engine. The car died when we stopped it.

Wrench light came on less than 1 week after purchase. Car was bogging down terribly. Took it to shop they said it was no big deal.

After driving for 45 min on freeway,exit off and approaching a light to turn , went to accelerated and car wouldn’t go. It took a few seconds then it jumped and spontaneously accelerated.

I I was driving down road speed limit 55. , no other cars in sight, and my panoramic sunroof just shattered .

Safety recall announced on 2020 ford escape. Selective, my insurance company, and manry-rawls llc, my agency sent me an email.
