FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Ford Escape vehicles manufactured February 26, 2009, to April 29, 2012, and 2010-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured February 25, 2009, to December 12, 2010. On vehicles with a 3.0L engine, the Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) may crack, causing a fuel leak.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the FDM flange with one that has a redesigned fuel supply port, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Interim notices were mailed to owners on December 13, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S41.

Your fuel tank is leaking, causing a strong fuel smell both inside and outside your vehicle. An independent mechanic tried to seal the leak with epoxy, but it started leaking again. The repair will likely require replacing the fuel tank or having it professionally welded and sealed.

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the odor of fuel was present inside the cabin of the vehicle. Upon inspection, the contact discovered a crack in the fuel tank which caused the fuel leak. The cause of the failure was not yet determined, and the vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 220,000.

The fuel pump was replaced and a new one was installed and now the engine is misfiring really hard and when the vehicle is placed in drive or reverse the engine tries to stall. The mechanic is saying that I will have to purchase a fuel rail pressure sensor that controls the fuel to each fuel injector. If this item or the whole fuel system is on a Recall List. Then I shouldn't have to pay anything to have it repaired and replaced by the Dealership. I do need to be notified about this issue immediately. This is a 2011 Ford Escape XLT AWD 4dr SUV with 3.0 V6 Flex Fuel system.

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that upon approaching the vehicle, the contact observed gasoline leaking underneath the fuel tank. The contact became aware of a crack in the gasoline tank seal. The contact stated that there was a constant odor of gasoline on the interior of the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 240,000.

I TRIED TO GET FUEL LATE AT NIGHT IN WINTER WARNING AFTER WORK AND UPON DOING SO, THE NOZZLE AT THE GAS STATION WOULD NOT FIT PROPERLY TO FUEL THE TANK. GAS BEGAN TO LEAK OUT AS I WAS FUELING THE VEHICLE, SQUIRTING UP ONTO MY BODY AND CLOTHING. I DID NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE NOZZLE DID NOT FIT, HOWEVER I NEEDED DESPERATELY TO GET GAS SO THAT I COULD RETURN HOME IN A MOUNTAINOUS AREA WHERE I LIVE. I TRIED FILLING THE GAS TANK SLOWLY TO NO AVAIL. THEN I PROCEEDED TO ANOTHER GAS STATION AS THERE ARE NOT MANY AROUND, AND AGAIN NOZZLE WOULD NOT ENTER THE TANK. THIS TIME I COULDN'T EVEN TURN ON THE PUMP. AFTER INSPECTING THE SITUATION, I COULD SEE THAT THE FUEL TANK AREA LOOKED AS THOUGH THE HOLE FOR THE TANK NO LONGER ACCEPTED NOZZLES, THE FUEL FILLER AREA SEEMED TO HAVE SLIPPED AND I NOW I AM UNABLE TO GET GAS AT ALL. THERE WAS NO WARNING- THIS JUST HAPPENED SUDDENLY, PUTTING ME IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION, WITH GASOLINE ON MY CLOTHING, FREEZING TEMPERATURES AND NEARLY STRANDED. LUCKILY I HAD ENOUGH GAS TO GET HOME, HOWEVER I CAN NOT FUEL MY TANK AND THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A DIRE STRAIGHTS EMERGENCY.

OCTOBER 2018, CALLED KENDALL AFTER RECEIVING SECOND NOTICE. THE SERVICE DEPT. SAID THEY'D CALL WHEN IT CAME IN. KENDALL FORD SERVICE DEPT. 866-957-4040. THIRD NOTICE RCVD 7/12/2019. CALLED AGAIN AND, TERESA, STATED THEY'D CALL WHEN THE PART CAME IN. THREE YEARS TO GET A PART IS OUTRAGEOUS. THE FORD DEALER HAS DEMONSTRATED BEYOND ANY DOUBT THAT THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT RECALLS, UNABLE TO BE TRUTHFUL, AND HAVE NO CONCERN ABOUT ANYTHING BUT MONEY.

THIS VEHICLE HAD A RECALL REGARDING THE FUEL DELIVERY MODULE REPAIRED IN MAY 2019 (BY CHAPMAN FORD IN HORSHAM, PA), JUST BEFORE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN JUNE. IN LATE AUGUST 2019, THE CAR WAS HAVING DIFFICULTY STARTING. I BROUGHT IT TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP (FULLERTON FORD IN SOMERVILLE, NJ). THEY INSISTED CHAPMAN FORD DID A POOR JOB WITH THE RECALL REPAIR (SPECIFICALLY CONNECTING THE FUEL PUMP) AND FORD CORPORATE AUTHORIZED FULLERTON TO FIX CHAPMAN'S POOR WORK (FREE OF CHARGE FOR ME). A FEW DAYS AGO, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START EVEN WHEN JUMP STARTED. THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIPS (MALOUF FORD IN NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ AND FULLERTON FORD) SAID THEY DIDN'T HAVE AN OPENING TO WORK ON THE CAR FOR 3 WEEKS. I WANTED TO TAKE THIS VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALERSHIP BUT I CAN'T AFFORD TO BE OUT OF A VEHICLE FOR 3 WEEKS SO I TOOK THE CAR TO A PRIVATE SHOP (QUALITY AUTO CENTER IN FRANKLIN PARK, NJ) . THE PRIVATE SHOP DIAGNOSTICALLY PROVED THE FUEL PUMP NO LONGER WORKS. THE PRIVATE SHOP REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AND THE VEHICLE NOW WORKS AGAIN. THIS IS INDEED AN OLDER VEHICLE, BUT I THINK THE TIMING IS ESPECIALLY SUSPICIOUS THAT THE FUEL PUMP FAILS SHORTLY AFTER IT HAS BEEN HANDLED MULTIPLE TIMES FOR RECALL REPAIR. FURTHERMORE, CHAPMAN FORD WAS DEEMED BY FORD CORPORATE TO DO A SUBPAR RECALL REPAIR. I CALLED FULLERTON FORD AND FORD CORPORATE ABOUT POTENTIAL LIABILITY BUT THEY DIDN'T SEEM INTERESTED TO ENTERTAIN BECAUSE I WASN'T ABLE TO BRING MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION.

I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THAT LIGHTS UP ALL THE TIME ON THE CAR. IT WILL ALSO SAY "CHECK FUEL FILL INLET" WHEN I PUMP GAS. THE CODE READS P0455 WHICH MEANS THE ENGINE COMPUTER RECOGNIZES A LARGE LEAK IN THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM (EVAP). THE VEHICLE'S EVAP SYSTEM IS SEALED, IT'S MAIN PURPOSE IS TO PREVENT GASOLINE VAPORS IN THE FUEL TANK FROM ESCAPING INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. I AM NOT SURE IF ONE OF THE RECALLS PERTAINS TO THIS, BUT THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR ME. SO MUCH SO, THAT I HAVE STOPPED DRIVING THE CAR IN FEAR FOR MY SAFETY AND MY FAMILY.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY CRUISING AT 80MPH WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE GAS PEDAL STOPPED WORKING. THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING BUT EVEN WHEN I WOULD PUT THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR IT WOULD NOT GIVE IT ANY ACCELERATION. A SMALL WRENCH SIGN POPPED UP ON THE DASH AND I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE L. WHEN THE CAR WAS IN IDLE THE ENGINE WAS VERY SHAKY AND RPMS WERE GOING UP AND DOWN SO I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. I SAT FOR ROUGHLY 5MINUTES AND THEN TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE IT STARTED NO ISSUES. PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND THE GAS PEDAL WAS WORKING AGAIN NO ISSUES SO CONTINUED TO DINNER. ON THE WAY HOME TOOK 95 BUT WAS GOING 55-65 TAKING CAUTION IN CASE THE CAR STOPS WORKING AGAIN. TO NO SURPRISE IT DID SO I PULLED OVER SAT FOR 2 MINUTES AND RESTARTED WITH NO ISSUES AND FINISHED DRIVING HOME.

MY ESCAPE HAS FORD RECALL #16S41 ON IT. I BEGAN TO SMELL A STRONG GASOLINE SMELL AROUND MY CAR. I TOOK IT INTO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH THE RECALL ISSUE. EVEN THOUGH THIS RECALL HAS BEEN IN PLACE SINCE NOV/DEC OF 2016 THERE IS STILL NO PART TO REPAIR IT 8 MONTHS LATER. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY WERE GOING TO REPLACE IT WITH A PART THAT HAS THE SAME DEFECT/RECALL. I DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THIS. THERE IS AN INCREASED RISK OF FIRE DUE TO FUEL LEAK. THIS TIME I COULD SMELL GAS. WILL I NEXT TIME? WHAT IF THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED IN THE GARAGE WHERE FUMES COULD BUILD UP AND SOMETHING SPARKED AND OUR WHOLE HOUSE EXPLODED. I CANNOT CONTINUE TO PUT MYSELF, MY CHILDREN AND FRIENDS AND FAMILY (INCLUDING OTHER CHILDREN) IN MY CAR WHEN I DO NOT FEEL THAT IT IS SAFE AND FORD CANNOT CERTIFY THAT IT IS SAFE. THEY DO NOT HAVE A DATE FOR WHEN THE REPLACEMENT PART WILL BE AVAILABLE AND THEY REFUSE TO GIVE ME A RENTAL OR LOANER VEHICLE. THEY ARE REPORTING THAT THERE HAVE BEEN NO INJURIES OR FATALITIES TO DATE DUE TO THIS RECALL. ARE THEY WAITING FOR THAT TO HAPPEN BEFORE THEY PROTECT CONSUMERS? I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH ON AN INTERSTATE, AND MY CAR SUDDENLY LOST ANY ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. WE MANAGED TO MANEUVER TO THE SHOULDER, STOP THE CAR, RESTART IT AND EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE. THIS HAD HAPPENED 1+ YEARS PREVIOUSLY, AND WE DISCOVERED FORD HAD ISSUED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE THROTTLE BODY. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THE THROTTLE BODY WAS FOUND TO BE FAULTY, AND IT WAS REPLACED UNDER THAT WARRANTY. HOWEVER, NOW IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN, ONLY THIS TIME I PAID TO HAVE THE SAME THROTTLE BODY REPLACED AS IT IS NO LONGER COVERED UNDER A WARRANTY. I AM WORRIED THAT THIS WILL KEEP HAPPENING, IE. RANDOMLY I WILL NO LONGER HAVE THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING AT A HIGH SPEED AND POTENTIAL IN HIGH TRAFFIC. ITS TERRIFYING TO LOSE THAT KIND OF CONTROL. I BELIEVE A PREVIOUS INVESTIGATION HAD BEEN OPENED FOR THIS ISSUE, THUS THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM. BUT CLEARLY FORD HAS NOT ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE IF IT CAN CONTINUE TO HAPPEN.

GAS SMELL INSIDE CAR. ON THIRD OR FOURTH DAY OF RECURRING SMELL, TOOK TO SERVICE. SERVICE TECH HAD DIFFICULTY FINDING LEAK, AS THEIR WAS NO VISIBLE DRIPS TO THE GROUND. RETURNED TO DRIVING WHILE THE GAS SMELL BECAME STRONGER. RETURNED TO SERVICE, THIS TIME HE FOUND THE SOURCE TO BE THE FUEL PUMP. THE PROBLEM WAS ACTUALLY THE ELBOW PLASTIC NECK LEADING INTO THE FUEL PUMP WAS SPEWING GAS FROM AN INVISIBLE HAIRLINE CRACK. THE LEAK STOPS WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED OFF. THE LOCATION OF THE FUEL PUMP IS UNDER THE REAR SEAT - CAUSING A THICK SMELL OF GAS AND EXTREME DANGER OF EXPLOSION. I HAVE NEVER HAD REPAIR WORK ON THAT PART. THIS APPARENTLY IS DUE TO MANUFACTURE FLAW IN MATERIALS. I AM A NEW WIDOW AND LOOKING AT A $650 REPLACEMENT FUEL PUMP. WHEN THE SERVICE MAN CAME NEAR IT HE SAID TO STEP AWAY FROM THIS CAR AS IT WAS DANGEROUS TO BE NEAR IT AND THAT I HAD TO LEAVE IT. AFTER A DAY OR SO, THEY TOLD ME THAT SOME KIND OF "PEBBLE" MUST HAVE RUBBED A HOLE IN MY FUEL LINE AND THAT IS WOULD BE $634.62 FOR PARTS AND REPAIR. I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN ON A FIXED INCOME AND I AM VERY UPSET ABOUT THIS. HOW CAN SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN AND PUT PEOPLES LIVES IN DANGER? RESEMBLED LIKE IT WAS OUT OF GAS, HOWEVER I HAD 3/4 OF A TANK FULL. I PULLED OVER, TURNED OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES, RESTARTED. WELL, IT HAPPENS A LOT NOW. HAD A NEW FUEL FILTER, GA TREATMENT, NEW GASOLINE ETC. IT HAPPENS DAILY. FINALLY ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON, I TOOK TO DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID IT WAS P2111 & P2112. FUEL ACTUATOR STUCK OPEN, OTHER STUCK CLOSED. I AM A NURSE MARKETER, SINGLE MOM I FOUR AND I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE NEW A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO. I DON'T HAVE THE 700.00 TO HAVE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. NONETHELESS, I AM LUCKY I HAVEN'T BEEN KILLED YET ON THE INTERSTATE BY THIS PROBLEM. I'M HAVING TO BORROW A CR NOW. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. A RECALL NEEDS TO BE ISSUED. AFTER GOOGLING, THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH FORD SINCE AT LEAST 2004. DOES ANYBODY REALLY CARE ABOUT OUR LIVES & OUR CHILDREN'S LIVES. LET'S GET THIS FIXED. FORD SHOULD BE ASHAMED. *TR

AS I WAS EXITING A HIGHWAY, MY CAR MESSAGE CENTER ALERTED ME TO SAFELY COME TO A STOP. AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO GET INTO A PARKING LOT, THE CAR SHUT OFF. I RESTARTED AND WAS ABLE TO GET INTO PARKING LOT ON ELECTRIC, I GUESS. IT WAS TOWED TO UTTER FORD, IN SHERMAN, TX. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND TOLD ME IT HAD TO DO WITH THE FUEL PUMP AND THE ELECTRICAL. THEY KEPT IT OVERNIGHT AND SAID THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP. I PICKED IT UP ON 12/3 AROUND 2:30PM. I GOT 40 MILES AND THE CAR WENT INTO FAIL/SAFE MODE AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT SAFELY TO A PARKING LOT. AFTER THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND THEN BACK ON, THE ACCELERATOR STUCK. HITTING THE BREAK DID NOT HELP. THE CAR HAD TO BE TURNED OFF TO KEEP THE ENGINE FROM REVVING. IT WAS TOWED TO DAVID MCDAVID LINCOLN IN PLANO, TEXAS. THE SERVICE TECH SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING REGISTERING ON THE DIAGNOSTIC. ON THEIR SECOND TEST DRIVE, THE CAR TURNED OFF WHILE THE DRIVER WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. THEY HAD TO SEND A TOW TRUCK TO GET HIM. THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. *TR
