2017 Chevrolet Volt Fuel System Problems

Currently, two two issues are ongoing with my 2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier. I took my Volt to Epic Chevrolet in Sacramento, CA, on August 9, 2024, because the "Propulsion Power Is Reduced" warning and the "Service Park Assist System" warning came on with the "Check Engine" light.

1st incident-While doing a U-Turn on an inclined road car suddenly sounded like it was going to die, no acceleration when I pressed on the gas pedal. Car almost stopped as it was on a hill and suddenly the gas engine turned on so the accelerator started to work again. I felt very unsafe and thought I was going to get hit by any on coming cars due to the loss of acceleration.

I have needed a new EGR valve for my 2017 Volt for 11 months now. GM told me this in August of last year. I was able to continue to drive the car (without a passing inspection) since then, until recently I was on the highway and my car simply stopped responding to the throttle.

Battery Energy Control Module failed resulting in significantly reduced and unreliable propulsion power available reducing maneuverability and increasing risk of collision at speeds over 45 MPH. Check Engine Light illuminated as well as a “propulsion power reduced” message on the dashboard. The problem was confirmed by a dealer and repaired under 8 year / 100000 mile voltec warranty.

The Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) has failed. On two occasions this put me at risk of collision because when the BECM lost communication my car stalled as I was accelerating away from a stop sign. On one occasion, cross traffic had to come to a stop so I could push my car out of the intersection.

While driving in the EV-mode in a traffic the car suddenely lost its ability to accelerate. The ICE started, the CHECK ENGINE icon appeared. I managed to park in the right lane with hazard lights flashing, but my car caused a traffic jam.

Coolant was discovered inside your Chevrolet Volt's lithium-ion battery module during a dealership service visit, and the battery was deemed unusable even though there was no visible damage to the module itself. The dealership estimated the repair cost at $29,000, and a service representative acknowledged seeing this issue on multiple vehicles, suggesting it may be a manufacturing defect rather than a maintenance-related problem. Despite regular maintenance and recalls at Chevrolet dealerships throughout the vehicle's 127,000-mile life, the coolant contamination still occurred. The repair will likely involve replacing the entire battery module to prevent potential safety issues.

I was driving effortlessly down [XXX] between san francisco and santa cruz when suddenly I seemed to be losing power. Pressing the accelerator/gas pedal was not obtaining the usual result and I was going slower and slower by what felt like the second. I also noticed that it switched to gas although it said there were around 12 miles on the EV battery which was a sign that something was wrong.

On [XXX] my 2017 Chevy Volt was having propulsion issues, and later would not start at all. This was not the first instance of propulsion issues, fortunately I was able to pull the vehicle into parking lots. The vehicle was towed to Midway Chevrolet, 2323 W Bell Road, Phoenix, AZ 85023.

While driving on the highway there was sudden power loss with a message on the display stating "propulsion reduced" and had to pull over.

My 2017 Chevrolet Volt started displaying an error message last week "reduced propulsion power". I set up an appointment at the dealership but had to continue driving in the meantime. The error message changed to "Engine Unavailable" and shortly therefore shut down completely.

I was in a neighborhood driving ~30 MPH and slowed down to take a right turn. Once I completed the turn my car stalled out completely and would no longer accelerate. I tried putting the car in park and back into drive with no luck.

EGR valve failed on [XXX] southbound near Cartersville, GA. Initially, the engine showed a Check Engine light, and showed a message that "Propulsion power had been reduced". Approxmately 60 seconds later before we could reach an exit, the engine shut off while driving at 60 MPH.

The battery energy control module failed mid drive causing my car to come to a stop in the middle of traffic. The car was towed to a dealership mechanic shop where the BECM had indeed failed. There was no signal that is was going to fail it just simply stopped and as it stopped the check engine light came on

On Nov5th 2023 the dash displayed "Shift to Park" and "Unable to Charge" and would not move. New 12v battery installed on the 7th, still had issue. OBD codes pointed to MAF and MAP sensors.

My 2017 chevy volt suddenly lost all power while I was driving about 35 MPH in electric mode. The car has been driven about 4500 miles. A "shift to park" message was displayed on the dashboard.

Vehicle propulsion system failed. According to Chevy dealer the Battery Energy Control Module and A/T Control Park Switch and harness failed. Warning lights came on when the failure happened.

Propulsion power reduced and check engine light came on my 2017 Chevy volt - been happening a few times now the last week

Battery Energy Control Module Failure There is an existing NTHSB issue related: N232432680 I was told my VIN is not included in this issue, so the failure is not covered under warranty by GM. That said, the same failure and symptoms occurred (prompt multiple battery cell failures leading to electric drive inoperable).

The EGR Valve and EGR Cooler went out on the vehicle while driving on the highway, causing my propolsion power to decrease or rendered unusable. This also caused inconsistent engine pressure and caused my engine to overheat, having to pull over multiple times while driving. The problem has been diagnosed by a Chevorlet certified repair center.

At least 4 times in the past 1.5 years, my car has given the message “propulsion power is reduced” at random times. Each time after receiving this message, the car engine begins making a loud noise and the acceleration is greatly reduced, forcing me to drive at a slower speed until the message goes away.

EGR Valve issue. I have a 'reduced propulsion energy' notice on the dash. Unable to get repaired because there is no parts.

Egr valve failed. GM has this part in a national control status. Vehicle should be under warranty per the handbook but dealership is denting this.

I own a 2017 Chevrolet Volt and at about 90,000 miles on the odometer, my dashboard displayed a "Propulsion Power Reduced" message, and upon diagnostic scanning, error code P0401 was detected. This code indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. After further investigation, it has been determined that the EGR valve has failed and requires replacement.

The propulsion system stopped working altogether while the car was in motion. The battery charge gauge went from 1/2 to full. The charging information screen displayed a message reading "unable to charge." The air conditioning only blew out hot air, but the coolant temperature gauge read 194-degrees F (within "normal").

While driving on the interstate car suddenly flashed a "reduced propulsion power " warning indicator. At this time the car was speed limited and made us a liability on the interstate. We were about 80 miles from our home so ended up driving the car back home being speed limited.

Check engine light came on and low propulsion warning came on. Took my vehicle to the Dealership and was told that the EGR valve needs to be replaced. The only update I received a week or so later was that the part had been ordered.

My BECM failed on my 2017 Volt. The vehicle set a check engine light and went into reduced engine power 3 times when I was driving it. I took it to a dealer in Metaire, Louisiana.

My 2017 Chevrolet Volt has had issues with failing to start for years. Many times when the car did start I would receive an error message saying “propulsion power reduced,” resulting in the vehicle being less responsive to the accelerator. I have taken it to get serviced many times only for the issue to persist.

Vehicle malfunctioned and was unable to be driven. Had to tow to dealership where they diagnosed the problem to be a BECM board, and new HV battery. It has been at dealership for 6 weeks at this point, with no ETA on new battery to arrive.

The EGR valve failed, causing the loss of propulsion message on July 11 2022. This was fixed, however the message was received again in December 2022.

I was driving home from a client meeting on the highway and received a check engline light with the message "Propulsion Power is Reduced." After a trip to the dealership, I learned that the car's Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve malfunctioned and needs to be replaced. Some online research shows that this is a very common issue with Chevrolet Volts.

About 3 minutes after I started driving the 2017 Chevy Volt, an error message showed saying "propulsion power is reduced" and I was unable to drive the vehicle as typical. While driving on base at fairly low speed (~15-20mph) in the battery area of the display, the EV range was reading 12mi, and it started going up.

A problem occurred on approx Sept 25 where the vehicle dash suddenly displays "shift to park" and no longer has any propulsion. This is dangerous, as in this case the car was stuck in the middle of traffic unable to move to the shoulder. Luckily someone helped push my wife out of the road.

I was driving and put my car in “hold” mode and received an error message ‘propulsion power reduced, engine not available’. I was preparing for a ~300 mile drive and so I pulled over after a few miles to see if turning it on and off again would do anything. My car kept saying ‘shift to park’ and wouldn’t turn back on.

P0401 code caused the car to say “propulsion power is reduced”. I was on the highway and had to pull off to find a safe place.

Vehicle lost all motive power while driving on the Highway. Vehicle is part of GM Special Coverage program number N232432680 for BECM issues up to 150,000 miles. Vehicale currently has 109350 miles.

Egr failed, which blew out the walk home fuse. That is a safety issue. Gm discountunued volts and the egr value is not available worldwide.

Was driving on highway when given error ""Propulsion Power Reduced." This resulted in less power available, which is a safety hazard. Then after a while of driving (on the highway) I received the error "Engine Not Available," which caused me to have to continue on electric only power. If I did not have any battery left in the traction battery, I would have had to maneuver to the shoulder.

Mil came on for egr malfunction. Part not available.

Propulsion power reduced message appears on dash board. Yes available for inspection. Unsafe to drive losing power on highway.

The EGR Valve has failed and they have not provided a replacement yet. Been 4 months. Decline to give an ETA.

The vehicle will not turn off after being put in park. Shifting to park should allow the vehicle to be turned off with the start/stop button. It will not turn off in the park position.

At speed 82 in busy traffic the car show up a message propulsion power is reduced and started to jumping and it lose power at the same time engine was raving and the battery start to drain fast

On 3 separate occasion my car has died on the highway and lost acceleration, gm issued a recall between my first and second incidents and the recall fix did not fix the issue as this happened a third time. Nov 14th was the first time but it has happened multiple times. This is very dangerous and people will probably die because of this.
