FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas; model year 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn ION vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, or Texas; model year 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona; and model year 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma, or Texas. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the plastic supply or return port on the fuel pump module may crack, which could cause a fuel leak.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. Notification to owners began on on November 21, 2012. Owners were instructed to not bring their vehicles in for repair until January 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300.

AS MANY OTHERS, I NOW HAVE A LEAKING FUEL SENDING UNIT ON OUR 2007 CHEVY EQUINOX. MANY PEOPLE HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM AND CHEVY CHOOSES NOT TO ADDRESS IT FOR US BY ISSUING A RECALL. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING THE FUEL SYSTEM IS PRESSURIZED WHICH CAUSES FUEL TO SPRAY OUT OF A FAULTY JOINT WHICH IS MADE OF PLASTIC THAT CRACKS, THE FUEL THEN DRIPS DOWN FROM THE TANK AS IT PLEASES AROUND THE EXHAUST AND ON TO THE FLOOR.

CAR SMELLS OF GASOLINE AND HAS TROUBLE STARTING ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT. CAR WILL START ON SECOND ATTEMPT BUT HAS A VERY STRONG GAS ODOR. AFTER TAKING IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC, THE CAR WAS DIAGNOSED AS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND IS CONFIRMED TO BE LEAKING GASOLINE. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT MAKE AND MODEL BUT IS LISTED AS ONLY IMPACTING CERTAIN STATES (ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, NEVADA, TEXAS) BUT I'M IN NEW JERSEY AND HAVE SEEN IT ALSO REPORTED IN OHIO, SOUTH CAROLINA AND NEW YORK. OUR 2007 CHEVY EQUINOX FUEL PUMP RETURN STARTED LEAKING FUEL ON THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK ON THE GROUND AND RELEASES STRONG GAS FUMES WHILE PARKED IN OUR GARAGE. THIS VEHICLE IS UNDER CURRENT SAFETY RECALL IN OTHER STATES BUT NOT IN INDIANA. WHY ARE ONLY SOME STATES UNDER RECALL BUT NOT INDIANA?
I STARTED SMELLING GAS ODOR WHEN EXITING THE VEHICLE , I CHECKED AROUND THE VEHICLE DID NOT SEE ANY GAS SPILLING ANYWHERE, CHECKED UNDER THE VEHICLE NOTICED THE FUEL TANK WAS WET ON THE BACKSIDE , THE GAS IS COMING FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK..I NOTICED THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS MODEL VEHICLE AND CHECKED AND SAID THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER THE RECALL...WHY? MY CAR JUST RECENTLY STARTED TO SMELL LIKE GAS. AT FIRST, IT WAS A FAINT SMELL. NOW IT IS STRONGER. I CAN STILL DRIVE THE VEHICLE BUT I FEEL AS IF IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN THAT RIDE IN THIS VEHICLE. MY GAS METER STILL WORKS AND MY RANGE IS ACCURATE BUT THE GAS SMELL IS BECOMING VERY OVERWHELMING.

I BOUGHT A USED 2007EQUINOX LAST YEAR (MAY 2015) I KEPT SMELLING GAS AND IT WAS GETTING WORSE, DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE RECALL, TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC WHICH COST ME $965.00 TO REPLACE. IF THIS VEHICLE WENT THROUGH THE RECALL AND A FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED, SHOULD IT HAVE BEEN LEAKING AGAIN AFTER 4 YEARS. IT WOULD HESITATE ON STARTING AND DRIVING AND PARKING THE GAS FUMES WERE SO BAD, I KNEW I HAD A LEAK SOMEWHERE, IT WAS LEAKING IN MOTION AND WHEN STATIONARY, WHEN I WOULD PARK IT AND WALK ABOUT THE PARK, THE GAS FUMES WERE THE WORST THERE, STILL COULD SMELL THE GAS IN MY CAR AND OUTSIDE BY THE DRIVERS SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE DOORS.

FUEL SENSOR LEVEL IS READING ERRATIC AFTER I PUT GAS IN MY VEHICLE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THE FUEL GAUGE GOES FROM FULL TO EMPTY BACK TO FULL.
NOTICED THE SMELL OF GAS COMING FROM MY CAR. ALSO TROUBLE STARTING. CHECKED GAS CAP AND WAS FINE. DROVE AROUND THE REST OF THE DAY STILL VERY STRONG GAS SMELL AND ISSUES WHEN STARTING THE CAR. GOT HOME AND LOOKED UP INFO AND SEE THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL ISSUES. BUT OF COURSE MY VEHICLE IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. THERE WAS AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM BUT ONLY CERTAIN VEHICLES WERE RECALLED NOW MINE IS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. SAFELY RISK AND NOT A CHEAP FIX.

IN THE MORNING OF MAY 1, 2014, I WENT TO THE PARKING LOT TO GET THE EQUINOX TO BUY SOME GROCERIES. WHEN I WAS OPENING THE DOOR, I SMELLED GASOLINE. SO I LOOKED UNDER THE EQUINOX AND SAW A BIG WET SPOT UNDER THE FUEL TANK. I IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT THE EQUINOX TO AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP. IT WAS FOUND OUT THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS LEAKING. SO I BOUGHT A NEW FUEL PUMP AND THE REPAIR WAS FINISHED ON MAY 3, 2014. I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION THAT ON JUNE 18, 2013, I BROUGHT THE EQUINOX TO THE CHARLES CLARK CHEVROLET FOR INSPECTION AFTER I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM GENERAL MOTORS FOR THE FUEL PUMP THAT WOULD LIKE. AFTER THE INSPECTION OF THE FUEL TANK AND FUEL PUMP, THE DEALER DECLARED NO LEAKS AND FOUND ALL WITHIN SPECS. I WAS MISLED BECAUSE THE FUEL PUMP LEAKED. BEING RECALLED, THE DEALER SHOULD HAVE CHANGED THE FUEL PUMP LEAKING OR NOT AND I WOULD NOT HAVE SPENT FOR THE REPAIR. I IMMEDIATELY FILED REIMBURSEMENT FROM THE DEALER AND I WAS TOLD THAT MY CLAIM WAS FORWARDED TO GENERAL MOTORS. UNTIL NOW (8/22/14) I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY REFUND. UPDATED 03/04/15. *JB

THE VEHICLE WAS TO BE FURTHER INSPECTED IN ORDER TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,500. I HAVE NOTICED A STRONG GAS SMELL AFTER DRIVING MY CAR. I AM NOW SCARED TO DRIVE IT & DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR. *TR
VEHICLE SMELLED OF GASOLINE ODORS UNDERNEATH BECOMING WORSE DAILY UNTIL LEAKAGE WAS OBVIOUS BY GASOLINE PUDDLES ON GROUND DIRECTLY UNDER VEHICLE. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO FIND A RECALL OR A SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM I FINALLY RECEIVED INFORMATION FROM LOCAL GM DEALERS THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS CONCERNING MY COMPLAINT EVEN THOUGH SEVERAL COMPLAINTS SIMILAR TO MINE HAD BEEN MADE. SO, I WAS LEFT WITH NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE BUT TO ATTEMPT TO FIX THE PROBLEM MYSELF. AFTER THE HOSES, CLAMPS, RESTRAINTS, AND TANK WAS REMOVED IT WAS APPARENT THAT I COULD NOT FIX IT SO I HAD A MECHANIC TO COME OUT, PROCEED WITH REMOVING AND REPLACING THE LEAKING LINES AND HOSES AND REASSEMBLING THE TANK BACK ONTO THE VEHICLE'S UNDERCARRIAGE. OF COURSE THIS WOULD END UP COSTING ME 9 ARMS AND 3 LEGS BUT AT THAT TIME THE CHEVROLET DEALER IN TUPELO MS. INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL IN EFFECT FOR MY PROBLEM BUT THAT HIS STAFF WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO CHECK OUT MY PROBLEM AND FIX AND REPLACE ANY BROKEN AND OR DEFECTED PARTS BUT THEY WOULD ONLY DO SO IF AND WHEN I DELIVERED MY VEHICLE TO THEIR SHOP, ALSO AT MY EXPENSE. A FEW MONTHS AFTER ALL THIS HAPPENED AND A FEW MONTHS AGO, GM SENT OUT A BROCHURE STATING THAT THERE WAS INDEED A RECALL REGARDING MY SPECIFIC PROBLEM AND THAT I SHOULD TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO GET MY VEHICLE TO THE GM DEALER (CLOSEST ONE FROM PONTOTOC BEING TUPELO - DEALERSHIP NAME WITHHELD) WHERE IT WOULD BE PROFESSIONALLY REPAIRED FREE OF ANY CHARGES TO ME. VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AND REGISTERED IN MICHIGAN. CAR STARTED SMELLING STRONG OF GASOLINE. FUEL STARTED LEAKING OUT OF THE VEHICLE. NO ACCIDENT OR DAMAGE HAD OCCURRED PRIOR TO THE GAS TANK LEAKING. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE FUEL PUMP/FUEL MODULE HAD TO BE REPLACED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE FUEL PUMP, CAUSING IT TO LEAK GAS AND COULD OF CAUSED A FIRE. UPON SMOKE TEST OF FUEL SYSTEM IT WAS FOUND THAT FUEL IS LEAKING FROM FUEL LINE WHERE THE FUEL LINE MEETS THE FUEL PUMP ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. I WAS ADVISED THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ITEM AND TO SEE IF THIS IS AN ITEM UNDER WARRANTY THROUGH THE DEALERSHIP. I DID RECEIVE A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS ISSUE. *TR
AFTER PARKING MY CAR, I STEPPED OUTSIDE AND NOTICED THAT MY CAR SMELLED LIKE GASOLINE. THE GAS TANK/FUEL PUMP BEGAN EMITTING A FUEL ODOR IN THE SUMMER OF 2011. I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS FROM RECENTLY FILLING THE TANK. IT WAS A HOT TEXAS SUMMER WHEN THIS BEGAN TO HAPPEN. THE SMELL WOULD COME AND GO WITHOUT REASON. IT DID HAPPEN MORE OFTEN IN THE SUMMER. THIS PAST WINTER, WHEN HAVING ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND INSPECTION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FUEL PUMP HAD A CRACK IN IT AND THAT IS WHERE THE GAS ODOR WAS ORIGINATING. IT WAS UNDER RECALL, BUT CHEVROLET KEEPS SAYING THAT OUR VIN NUMBER HAD NOT COME UP. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AT NEARLY $900.00. CHEVROLET KEEPS DENYING OUR CLAIM. IT APPEARS THAT IT HAS DENIED MANY, MANY CLAIMS. WE HAVE RECEIVED THE ORIGINAL RECALL LETTER BUT THEY HAVE NOT RECALLED MY SPECIFIC VEHICLE. I WOULD THINK THAT SOMETHING THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF AS FAR BACK AS 2010 SHOULD BE REPLACED AND REIMBURSED WITHIN LESS THAN 6 MONTHS AFTER YOU PERSONALLY HAVE IT REPAIRED. *TR

I STARTED SMELLING GAS WHILE DRIVING AND EVEN WHEN IT WAS PARKED. WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE OR DRIVE UPHILL IT WOULD SPUTTER AND CHOKE LIKE IT WASN'T GETTING ENOUGH GAS.
I BEGAN SMELLING FUMES COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. IT GO SO BAD, I HAD TO STOP PARKING MY CAR IN MY GARAGE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALER, DALE EARNHARDT CHEVROLET ON TENNESSEE STREET IN TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA, AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS ON THE RECALL. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD THAT THE 2007 CHEVY EQUINOX IS LISTED UNDER PHASE 2 OF THE RECALL AND THEY ARE ONLY DEALING WITH THE PHASE 1 VEHICLES. IN ADDITION, GM HAS NOT COME UP WITH THE NEW FUEL PUMPS TO REPLACE THE BAD ONES. THUS, IF I WANT IT FIXED, I WOULD HAVE TO GO TO THE NAPA STORE AND PURCHASE A FUEL PUMP (I BELIEVE THIS WOULD BE A NON-GM PART) AND THEN HAVE THEN INSTALL IT AT A COST OF OVER $1,100.00 TO ME. I THEN CONTACTED THE HOME OFFICE FOR GM AND THE "DISTRICT SPECIALIST", ROD, TOLD ME THAT THE ENGINEERS HAVE DETERMINED THAT DESPITE THE NATIONWIDE RECALL, THAT THE FUEL PUMP WILL NOT BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED. I ADVISE HIM OF ALL THE ON LINE DOCUMENTATION REGARDING THE RECALL AND HE TOLD ME THEY DON'T READ THOSE OR ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE SO I AM OUT OF LUCK. AFTER SMELLING A VERY STRONG ODOR OF GAS FOR ABOUT A MONTH, IT BECAME SO STRONG THAT I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER. THE SERVICE MGR. UPON RETURNING HOME THAT EVENING, I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE A NEWS STORY ON TV ABOUT A RECALL MADE BY CHEVROLET FOR THE VERY PROBLEM I HAD JUST HAD. AND THEN THE UNBELIEVABLE NEWS THAT THEY WOULD RECALL ONLY CERTAIN "WARM WEATHER" STATES. I LIVE IN VIRGINIA, WHICH WAS NOT INCLUDED, BUT IT GETS HOT HERE TOO. I AM APPALLED THAT THE RECALL WASN'T SENT TO EVERY OWNER THAT MIGHT BE AFFECTED BY THIS OBVIOUS DEFECT. ON 7 FEB. 2013 I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO MY LOCAL CHEVY DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT AS THERE WAS A CONSTANT SMELL OF FUEL. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL TANK WOULD NEED TO BE DROPPED TO LOCATE THE CAUSE OF THE FUEL LEAK THOUGH THERE WAS NO VISIBLE SIGN OF LEAKING FUEL. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL MODULE THAT SET ABOVE THE FUEL TANK HAD CRACKED AND WAS CAUSING THE SMELL/LEAK. I WAS INFOMED THAT TO REPAIR THE ISSUE IT WOULD COST ME OVER $1200.00 TO REPAIR. I CONTACTED GM AND WAS INFORMED THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE CURRENT RECALL THAT IS ONGOING IN FOUR OTHER STATES. AT FIRST IT WAS THOUGHT THAT THE TANK HAD CRACKED, BUT AFTER THE FUEL TANK WAS DROPPED A CRACKED PLASTIC SUPPLY LINE LEADING INTO THE FUEL PUMP WAS FOUND. I HAD THE MODULE REPLACED AT MY OWN EXPENSE. AFTER THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED I HEARD OF A RECALL ISSUED BY GM FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM, BUT WHEN I CONTACTED THEM THEY SAID THAT THE RECALL WAS SPECIFIC TO CERTAIN VIN NUMBERS THAT WERE LOCATED IN THE STATES OF ARIZONA, NEVADA AND TEXAS AND AS MY VEHICLE IS REGISTERED IN NY THIS RECALL DOES NOT COVER MY VEHICLE. HOW CAN A SAFETY RECALL BE ISSUED FOR A SPECIFIC PROBLEM AND NOT COVER ALL VEHICLES THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE RISK OF FIRE FROM MY LEAKY FUEL PUMP WAS THE SAME AS THE CARS LOCATED IN THOSE OTHER STATES. THIS MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE TO ME. I STARTED SMELLING GAS WHEN I STOPPED THE CAR. THERE WAS A GAS LEAK. I TOOK IT TO THE GARAGE AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT COULD HAVE SET THE WHOLE CAR ON FIRE, DUE TO THE LEAK AND TRAIL OF GAS GOING UP INTO THE CAR. I RESEARCHED THE SYMPTOMS ONLINE, AND DISCOVERED THAT GM HAS ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE SAME EXACT MODEL OF CAR WITH THE SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS. THE RECALL IS FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE FUEL PUMP. HOWEVER, THE RECALL IS ONLY BEING ISSUED IN A FEW STATES, NOT INCLUDING PENNSYLVANIA, WHERE I LIVE. GM SUGGESTED I TAKE THE CAR TO A GM DEALERSHIP FOR A DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALERSHIP ALSO STATED THAT THEY DISCUSSED THE PROBLEM WITH GM AND THEY OFFERED TO SPLIT THE COST 50/50 WITH ME. WITH THE 50% DISCOUNT, THE COST TO ME IS STILL NEARLY $500.00. GM CONTACTED LOCAL CHEVY DEALER FARRELL CHEVEROLET AND THEY WORKED OUT A 50% DISCOUNT ON THE REPAIR. I TOLD THE LADY AT GM THAT I WOULD ALSO ISSUE THIS COMPLAINT SO THAT ALL EQUINOX VEHICLES IN 2007 MIGHT GET INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL, SINCE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND POSSIBLY I COULD GET THE REST OF MY CHARGES RETURNED IF INCLUDED. I CALLED THE DEALER WHERE WE TAKE THE CAR, MIKE ANDERSON CHEVROLET IN CHICAGO, AND TOLD THEM WE WERE BRINGING THE CAR IN DUE TO A GAS SMELL AND A POSSIBLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE IS NOTICED AFTER VEHICLE IS STARTED AND RAN. CHECKING BENEATH FUEL TANK, IT IS VISIBLE THAT GASOLINE IS LEAKING FROM PUMP/CONNECTIONS AREA ON TOP OF TANK. ALSO HAS THE LEAK IN VICINITY OF EXHAUST CREATING A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD, NOT TO MENTION HEALTH HAZARD FROM BREATHING FUEL VAPORS. THE EXHAUST WILL NEED TO BE REMOVED TO FACILITATE REMOVAL OF FUEL TANK IN ORDER TO CORRECT OR REPLACE LEAKING PUMP. THE VEHICLE IS STILL IN OPERABLE CONDITION AND A PERSON WOULD ASSUME THAT EXTERNAL LEAKAGE WOULD RESULT IN A SAFETY RECALL TO REPAIR MANUFACTURING DEFECT. NORMALLY YOU DO NOT HAVE A LEAKAGE OF THE PUMP BEFORE A COMPLETE FAILURE OF SAID PUMP. I PERSONALLY THINK THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD RECALL AND PAY FOR REPAIRS. WHILE DRIVING MY EQUINOX, I SMELLED GAS AND THOUGHT I HAD WASTED GAS WHEN I WENT TO THE GAS STATION. AFTER SMELLING GAS FOR WEEKS, MY HUSBAND CHECKED THE TRUCK AND FOUND IT HAD GAS LEAKING FROM IT. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY FOUND THAT IT WAS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL ASSEMBLY AND STATED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. AFTER CALLING GM THEY REFUSE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM AND STATES THAT IF YOUR WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. AFTER CHECKING ONLINE I FOUND THAT THERE ARE TONS OF COMPLAINTS FROM FELLOW EQUINOX OWNERS ABOUT THIS DEFECT AND I FEEL THAT CHEVY SHOULD BE MADE TO OFFER A RECALL AND BE FORCED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *TR
IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING A FLAT TIRE REPAIRED ON THE RIGHT REAR OF THE VEHICLE THE MECHANIC DISCOVERED A FUEL LEAK. I CALLED THE DEALER AND TOOK THE CAR TO BE LOOKED AT AND REPAIRED. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A SPECIAL BULLETIN CONCERNING THE FUEL LEAKS. I PROVIDED THE VIN AND THE SERVICE MANAGER CHECKED AND SAID THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED. I STATED THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE BUT GM DOES NOT WANT TO CORRECT THE ISSUE. I HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AT $1100 FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY. I WILL SEEK COMPENSATION FROM GM MYSELF. APPARENTLY, THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT 2006-2007 CHEVROLET EQUINOX HAVING A STRONG FUEL SMELL AROUND THE VEHICLE. IN MOST CASES, THE FUEL LEAKAGE IS COMING FROM THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY, AN O-RING OR GASKET CONNECTING TO THE TANK ITSELF IS USUALLY THE CAUSE OF THE LEAKAGE, CAUSING FUEL TO POOL ON THE TOP OF THE TANK. IN MY RESEARCH I DISCOVERED THAT OTHER OWNERS HAD: FUEL TANK LEAKING; FUEL PUMP AND FUEL SENSOR REPLACED; FUEL PRESSURE MODULAR; FAULTY FUEL LINES; CRACKED FUEL TANK; GAS TANK SEAM NEAR PUMP/SENDING UNIT ASSEMBLY SEPARATED & LEAKING; PLASTIC GAS TANK HAD A CRACK; VAPOR CANISTER; CRACKED FUEL PUMP PIPE; FUEL LINE FROM FUEL PUMP TO ENGINE CRACKED; FUEL PUMP MODULE AT CONNECTOR; AND ON AND ON AND ON!!! THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMPONENT FAILURE/MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED. THIS IS A SAFETY AND HEALTH ISSUE - THE POTENTIAL FOR ONE OF THESE VEHICLES EXPLODING (POSSIBLY WITH DEATHS) IS GREAT. I STARTED SMELLING GAS FUMES ON THE 14TH OF JUNE 2012. THEY GOT WORSE UNTIL I TOOK THE CHEVY TO A DEALER IN KINGMAN AZ. THEY FOUND THAT THEIR WAS A GAS LEAK AT THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK. MECHANIC FOUND THE FUEL PUMP AND HOSES WERE CORRODED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. HE DROPPED THE TANK AND A POOL OF GASOLINE IS SITTING IN A DEPRESSED AREA ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK WHERE THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED. THE GAS IS LEAKING WHERE THE FUEL PRESSURE LINE CONNECTS TO THE PIPE ON TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP SENDING UNIT. THIS APPEARS TO BE A HEAT SHRINKED WRAPPED CONNECTION ( NO CLAMPS ) WHICH HAS CRACKED CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK OUT AND DOWN THE SIDES OF THE FUEL TANK IN CLOSE VICINITY OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. MY MECHANIC REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP/FUEL MODULE/FUEL LINE ASSEMBLY ( YES, ITS ALL ONE UNIT ). SET ME BACK $ 1,200 DOLLARS AND NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY AND I HOPE THIS ONE'S NOT DEFECTIVE. A LOCAL MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE FUEL TANK. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED, BUT DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIRS TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

MY WIFE STARTED SMELLING GAS AFTER DRIVING OUR 2007 CHEVY EQUINOX. AT FIRST WE THOUGHT IT WAS A POSSIBLE LOOSE GAS CAP, BUT AFTER CHECKING THE SMELL BECAME WORSE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. I DID SOME FURTHER CHECKING ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND A POSSIBLE PROBLEM FROM OTHERS THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I LOOKED UP UNDER THE VEHICLE AND FOUND A FUEL LEAK COMING FROM THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK AND RUNNING DOWN THE SIDE NEXT TO THE FUEL FILL NECK THAT'S LOCATED VERY CLOSE TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. AT THAT POINT WE STOPPED DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND CALLED OUR LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND WHERE TOLD THAT IT WAS MOST LIKELY A FUEL PUMP ISSUE AND WE NEEDED TO BRING IT IN TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THE GUESSTIMATE COST IS ABOUT $1000.00 PARTS AND LABOR IF THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. I DECIDED TO REMOVE THE FUEL TANK MYSELF SINCE I HAVE BEEN A MECHANIC FOR 20+ YEARS. I WAS CORRECT THAT IT'S A CRACKED IN THE FUEL PUMP PIPE ON THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK THAT'S PART OF THE FUEL PUMPASSEMBLY. THE LEAK WAS SOAKING THE ELECTRIC CONNECTORS FOR THE FUEL PUMP AND RUNNING DOWN THE TANK NEXT TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY HAVE NOT SEEN AN ISSUE WITH THIS BEFORE. THE TOP OF THE TANK IS VERY PROTECTED. THERE IS NO SIGNS OF DAMAGE FROM SOMETHING FROM THE ROAD THAT MIGHT HAVE HIT IT OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THIS PROBLEM OTHER THAN STRESS FROM NORMAL USE. I HAVE GOOGLED AND SEEN WHERE THERE ARE SEVERAL CONSUMERS THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUES WITH THEIR 2007 EQUINOX'S. I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP IF THERE IS A BIG RISK IN DRIVING THE VEHICLE LIKE IT IS. THEIR ANSWER WAS THAT ANYTIME GAS FUMES ARE PRESENT IT PRESENTS RISKS. EVERY NIGHT WHEN PARKING THE VEHICLE IN THE GARAGE, THE NEXT MORNING THE GAS FUMES ARE TREMONDOUSLY CONCENTRATED (THIS IS WITH ALL THE GARAGE WINDOWS OPEN TO VENT THE GARAGE). INSPECTION BY LOCAL DEALER REVEALED GAS TANK SEAM NEAR PUMP/SENDING UNIT ASSEMBLY SEPARATED & LEAKING. VEHICLE IS STILL WITHIN POWER TRAIN AND EMISSIONS WARRANTIES BUT GM IS ONLY WILLING TO COVER COST OF NEW TANK(NOT OFFICIALLY UNDER EITHER WARRANTY, JUST AS A "GOOD WILL" GESTURE) LEAVING $500.00 IN LABOR FOR HER TO PAY. PER NHTSA WEBSITE, THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE INSTANCES OF THIS PROBLEM WHICH COULD ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS A COMPONENT FAILURE / MANUFACTURING DEFECT. GIVEN THE POTENTIAL FOR A FIRE AND/OR EXPLOSION, GM SHOULD VIEW THIS AS A POTENTIAL P/R NIGHTMARE AND DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION(TO INCLUDE A LOANER VEHICLE). LOCAL DEALER HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL BUT IT'S GM'S PLACE TO DO THE RIGHT THING RATHER THAN TAKING 'PARTIAL RESPONSIBILITY'. THE SERVICE SUPERVISOR PUT IT ON THE LIFT AND SAID I HAD A GAS LEAK AND COULD NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE. INDICATED IT WAS MOST LIKELY THE FUEL PRESSURE MODULATOR. ESTIMATED THE COST OF REPAIR WOULD BE ABOUT $650 PLUS LABOR. I CALLED BACK THAT MONDAY EVENING TO INQUIRE IF THE LEAK HAD BEEN PINPOINTED. GOOD NEWS!!! I WAS TOLD TO LEAVE THE KEY IN START POSITION TO BUILD UP PRESSURE IN THE GAS LINES. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY DID NOT WANT TO WARRANTY THE DEFECT. I ASKED FOR A QUOTE AND SAID IT WAS UPWARD OF $1,500. THIS IS AFTER HAVING TO PAY $93 DOLLARS FOR TELLING ME I HAD A GAS LEAK I KNOW I ALREADY HAD. TO MY OWN TROUBLESHOOTING I FOUND THAT THE FITTING THAT ATTACHES THE HIGH PRESSURE GAS LINE TO THE GAS PUMP MANIFOLD APPEARS TO BE A PLASTIC TO PLASTIC COMPRESSION FITTING. IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY THAT AFTER CONSTANT VIBRATION THESE TWO PLASTIC PARTS CAN CREATE A GAP FOR GAS TO ESCAPE IN LARGE QUANTITY. THUS THE CONSTANT GAS SMELL. WITH THE KEY IN THE START POSITION NOTICEABLE GAS CAN BE SEEN DISPENSING ONTO THE FLOOR. A MANUFACTURE DEFECT IN MY EYES. I HAVE CHEVY EQUINOX 2007 WHICH HAVE PROBLEM IN THE STEERING(NOISE) WHICH THE DEALER COULDN'T FIX & THERE WAS SOME PROBLEM WITH OIL TANK WHICH SMELLS SO BAD WORRIES ME AS I DRIVE THIS TRUCK WITH MY 9 MTH OLD BABY WAS FIXED FORTUNATELY. *TR
NOTICED STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE AFTER DRIVING. THE SMELL LINGERED FOR SEVERAL HOURS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. BROUGHT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK. ALSO FUEL SENSOR INDICATED GAS TANK WAS 1/2 FULL, BUT DEALER STATED TANK WAS FULL. VEHICLE HAS 67000 MILES ON IT. DEALER IS REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP AND FUEL SENSOR UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE RESULTED FROM THIS, BUT I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SERIOUS HAZARD AS LEAKING FUEL/FUMES COULD HAVE SPARKED AN EXPLOSION. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE, IT APPEARS OTHER OWNERS HAVE HAD SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. *TR
I DISCOVERED A SMELL OF FUEL FROM MY VEHICLE. HAD VEHICLE INSPECTED ON 3/25/10 AND FOUND OUT THAT THE FUEL TANK IS LEAKING DUE TO FAULTY MANUFACTURING. THE VEHICLE IS A 2007 CHEVY EQUINOX LT. IT IS JUST BEYOND WARRANTY AND NO EXTENDED WARRANTY WAS PURCHASED. THE FUEL LEAK IS BENEATH THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT. THERE IS NO WEAR AND TEAR TO THIS AREA OF THE VEHICLE. THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THIS AREA OF THE VEHICLE. THIS VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN A COLLISION. THE LEAK IS DUE TO POOR MANUFACTURING OF THIS PART. THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY INJURY OR FIRE YET. BUT THE POTENTIAL EXISTS.
