NHTSA Campaign: 17V621000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado, and 2016 Chevrolet Volt vehicles. The driver's frontal air bag may improperly inflate during second-stage deployment in the event of a high speed crash.

Risk: An improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag module, free of charge. The recall began November 8, 2017. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17387.

Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES

While driving, your StabiliTrak system disabled and power steering suddenly stopped working, making it very difficult to steer the vehicle. This happened while your teenage son was driving with you and another passenger in the car, creating a potentially dangerous situation. The power steering and StabiliTrak issue appears to be a known problem that was recalled in the previous model year but may not have been fully fixed in your 2016 model. Fixing this will likely require a dealer diagnostic to identify the electrical or mechanical cause, followed by repairs or replacement of steering and stability control components.

My 2016 Chevrolet Colorado lost all power steering while driving down the road. My young daughter was in the vehicle with me on a busy highway when I lost my ability to safely steer the vehicle. The stabilitrak light came on and that is when the power steering failed and I had to force my vehicle off the roadway manually to avoid getting into a collision.

Your power steering randomly cuts in and out, a problem that affected recalled 2015 Colorado models but wasn't addressed in your 2016. The issue started two years ago and a dealer visit didn't resolve it—they blamed a low battery, but that wasn't the actual cause. This is a known issue affecting multiple Colorados that should have been recalled for your model year.

Your steering wheel occasionally locks up or becomes very hard to turn when you start the vehicle or while driving, requiring excessive force to steer. You may also see a "Stabilitrak - Caution When Driving" warning on your dashboard, and recently the steering has been pulling to the left. The problem started intermittently but is happening more frequently. This could be related to a known steering issue (NHTSA Campaign 21V213000), and you'll likely need professional diagnosis and repair of the power steering system or related components.

While driving the dash will show power steering alert and then stabilitrack alert and the power steering then fails. This always happens while in motion and never when parked\idling. It has happened while turning which proves dangerous as the car then starts to straighten out.

We were driving on a busy freeway and the power steering quit working making it hard to steer and maneuver in traffic. We went directly to a GM dealer and the code CO545 Steering Wheel Torgue Sensor came up. This is a sensor inside the sealed steering gear that cannot be replaced without being completely removing and replaced.

I currently have a 2016 Chev Colorado with a intermittent power steering issue. It stops sometimes without warning in which it makes it very difficult to drive especially if you have no warning to this issue. I am sure this is a extra unsafe condition to deal with.

I am consistently having the power steering shut off while driving . I have read that this was an issue with the 2015 model year that had a recall issued , but there is no recall for the exact same problem on a 2016 model year . When this happens it puts me at risk of controlling vehicle , not only at slow speeds but also at freeway driving .

Your engine suddenly lost all power and shut down while driving on a hot day, causing you to coast from 75 mph to a complete stop in under 30 seconds on the freeway. A fuel pump control module was replaced first, but diagnostics revealed the real problem was a lifter failure in the engine. Additionally, your speed sensor has needed replacement three times in less than two years, suggesting a recurring electrical or sensor issue.
