NHTSA Campaign: 10V575000

Component: CHILD SEAT

GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.

Risk: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.

Fix: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

NHTSA Campaign: 06V139000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS MAY EXPERIENCE THE PERMANENT LOSS OF BRAKE LAMP FUNCTION OR BRAKE LAMPS THAT ARE ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES. THE CENTER HIGH-MOUNTED STOP LAMP (CHMSL) IS AFFECTED IN BOTH INSTANCES. ALSO, IF EQUIPPED, THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL BECOME INOPERATIVE. ANY TRAILER BRAKE LAMPS WHICH ARE CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMP WIRING WILL MIMIC THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMPS WHEN EITHER CONDITION OCCURS.

Risk: A FOLLOWING DRIVER MAY NOT KNOW WHEN THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN APPLIED, AND A REAR-END CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 5, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 OR ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727.

GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.

Risk: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. Filed: May 2020

Your truck's frame has rusted completely through in spots, which is preventing it from passing inspection. This is a structural integrity issue that affects the vehicle's safety and compliance with regulations. Fixing this will require extensive welding, frame repair, or potentially frame replacement by a professional shop.

NHTSA #: 11325937

Filed: Dec 2019

Your power steering fluid was leaking due to severe corrosion and a crack in the frame between the bed and cab. A mechanic discovered the frame had corroded completely through at this point. The manufacturer was notified but did not offer assistance with the repair.

CrashFiled: Mar 2020

Your airbags deployed unexpectedly while you were driving normally on a city street at 15-20 mph with no traffic incident occurring. The airbag impact hit your right hand and blocked your visibility, which caused you to hit the car in front of you. This unintended deployment suggests a serious malfunction in your airbag system that needs immediate inspection.

CrashFiled: Dec 2019

You were driving your 2005 Chevy Colorado when you veered off a county road and hit a utility pole on the left front side, causing the truck to roll over. However, the airbags did not deploy during the crash. The airbag system may need inspection to determine why it failed to activate during the collision.

Filed: Mar 2022

Your truck's driver-side frame has rusted completely through in multiple spots, while the passenger side shows rust but remains structurally sound. Both a dealership and independent mechanic confirmed this is a known issue with 2005 Colorados. The dealership won't accept the vehicle as a trade-in due to safety liability concerns. If the rusted frame continues to deteriorate or cracks while you're driving, it could compromise vehicle control and create unsafe driving conditions.

While driving through town, you heard a loud pop and noticed the truck handling strangely. When you arrived at work, you discovered the truck bed frame was cracked. You suspect the frame was either poorly designed or made from low-quality steel that rusted through prematurely. The repair will likely require frame inspection, rust treatment, and possible frame replacement or reinforcement.

NHTSA #: 11235138
Engine2 issues
highENGINE
Filed: Mar 2021

Your engine may have low compression, which can cause starting difficulties, rough idling, or reduced power. This typically requires a compression test to diagnose, and repair may involve replacing piston rings, valve seals, or a head gasket depending on where the compression loss is occurring.

Your engine is making loud knocking and diesel-like noises that get worse as the engine warms up, though it sounds normal when cold. After having your throttle body replaced twice by a technician, your truck started experiencing reduced power with a check engine light, limiting you to 40 mph — the problem temporarily goes away when you disconnect the battery but returns. A mechanic will need to diagnose the internal engine noise and investigate whether there's a recall for your 2.8L engine, as well as check the throttle body and engine control system for issues causing the power reduction.

Filed: Jan 2020

During a safety inspection, severe rust was discovered in your vehicle's frame behind the cab near the left leaf spring mount. The spring mount has collapsed into the frame, making your truck undrivable and unsafe. This appears to be a widespread issue affecting many vehicles of this model year in the same location, and replacement parts are not available from the manufacturer. Fixing this will likely require custom welding or frame replacement work.

Your airbag warning light stays on, leaving you uncertain whether your airbags will work properly in a crash or deploy unexpectedly. The problem is caused by wires in the back door jamb that become worn and break, which disables the airbag system. This issue also causes your vehicle to fail inspection in Massachusetts.

NHTSA #: 11297341
Fuel/propulsion System1 issue
criticalFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Sep 2019

You noticed a strong gas smell in your garage that got worse over two weeks, then your check engine light came on. Your mechanic found the fuel tank was ruptured where the metal coupling connected to the plastic tank. While you didn't see gasoline leaking on the floor, you realized you were at serious risk of a fire in your car and attached garage. The fuel tank will need to be replaced to resolve this safety hazard.

Your taillights don't turn on when you switch on your headlights at night, which makes your vehicle less visible to other drivers behind you. Since the fuses and bulbs test fine when checked separately, the problem likely lies in the wiring or electrical connections to the taillight assembly.

Filed: Mar 2021

Your truck hesitates and doesn't respond smoothly when you press the gas pedal while driving at normal speeds, even though no warning lights appear on the dashboard. Your brake and tail lights have stopped working even after you replaced the bulbs. This suggests the problem isn't the bulbs themselves, but rather an electrical issue upstream—possibly a blown fuse, a faulty switch, or wiring problems. A mechanic can test the electrical connections and fuses to identify the root cause.
