AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2007-2013 X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive48i, X5 xDrive50i and X5 M vehicles, 2008-2014 X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6 M vehicles, 2009-2013 X5 xDrive35d vehicles and 2010-2011 X6 ActiveHybrid vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

Fix: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag module, free of charge. The recall began March 14, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2013 128i and 135i Convertibles, 128i, 135i, and M Coupes, 2007-2010 X3 30si and X3 xDrive30i, 2013-2015 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i and X1 xDrive35i, 2007-2013 328i, 328i xDrive, 335i, 335is, 335i xDrive and M3 Coupes, 2006-2011 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi, 335i xDrive and M3, 2009-2011 335D, 2006-2012 325xi, 328i, 328xi and 328i xDrive, 2010-2011 X6 ActiveHybrid, 2007-2013 328i, 335i, 335is, M3 Coupes, X5 30si, X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 48i, X5 xDrive48i, X5 xDrive50i and X5 M, 2009-2013 X5 xDrive35d and 2008-2014 X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6M vehicles equipped with non-desiccated driver frontal air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Fix: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until this remedy is performed. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger front air bag, free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The contact owns a 2008 BMW X5. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bags warning light was illuminated. There was an abnormal chiming sound detected. Additionally, the digital screen was obstructed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and diagnosed the sensor mat needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 117,000.

BROUGHT MY 2008 X5 IN FOR THE CRANKCASE (PCV) RECALL. THE DEALER (THE BMW STORE IN CINCINNATI) TOLD ME THE SERPENTINE BELT HAD TO BE REMOVED FOR THE REPAIR AND WHILE REMOVING THE BELT, THE TENSIONER PULLY FELL OFF. THIS WAS DESCRIBED AS "DUE TO AN EXISTING BROKEN BOLT" IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE DEALER SAID I WOULD EITHER HAVE TO PAY TO REPAIR OR THEY WOULD PUT THE CAR BACK AS FOUND AND CAN NOT BE HELD IF THE CAR BROKE DOWN. IS THE DEALER LIABLE TO REPAIR THIS SINCE THE CAR WAS FULLY OPERATIONAL WHEN IT WAS BROUGHT IN FOR THE RECALL?

IT HAS FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IT IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM AFFECTING ALL OF ITS VEHICLES ACROSS YEARS AND MODELS. I BELIEVE THAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD ACT TO FORCE BMW TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. HUMAN LIVES ARE BEING PUT IN DANGER. THANK YOU.

A FEW MONTHS LATER, THE DEALER CALLED THE CONTACT BACK TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO REPLACE THE AIR BAGS PER AN UNKNOWN RECALL, BUT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE AGAIN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BY LETTER AND THEY STATED THAT THE CRASH WAS NOT SERIOUS ENOUGH FOR THE AIR BAGS TO DEPLOY. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION OF ITS AVAILABILITY UP TO NOW (LATE FALL 2017). I THINK THEY COMPLETELY IGNORED MY COMPLAINT. THE CATASTROPHIC RISK STILL EXISTS WITH MY CAR. I NEED NHTSA'S ASSISTANCE FOR BMW TO ACT ON THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE WAITED FOR OVER A YEAR NOW AND STILL NO ACTION FROM BMW.

THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING AT ITS OPTIMAL LEVEL AND IS POTENTIALLY GETTING DAMAGED AS A RESULT OF THE FAULTY FUEL PUMP THAT IS UNDER RECALL. I RECEIVED A NOTICE IN THE MAIL THAT I HAVE A IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL FROM BMW OF NORTH AMERICA. THE RECALL IS FOR A DRIVERS FRONT AIR BAG MODULE. TODAY 3/31/2016 I CONTACTED TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS (FT. WORTH, TX LOCATION ON WHITE SETTLEMENT ROAD, AND THE ARLINGTON, TX LOCATION LOCATED OFF OF LAMAR AVE). BOTH LOCATIONS SAID THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE COMING IN TO REPLACE THE AIR BAG MODULE. I FIND IT UNACCEPTABLE TO TELL ME ITS AN IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL THAT COULD CAUSE RUPTURING AIR BAG RESULTING IN METAL FRAGMENTS IF I GET INTO A WRECK, AND NOT HAVE A DATE OF WHEN I CAN GET THIS CORRECTED.

BMW PASSENGER SEAT AIRBAG/SEAT RESTRAINT SYSTEM HAS A MALFUNCTION. THE SYSTEM SAYS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE PASSENGER SEAT AND/OR AIRBAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM OR SEATBELT OR BELT TENSIONERS. THERE IS A RED LIGHT ON THE DASH INDICATING FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM. THIS LIGHT COMES AND GOES. SOMETIMES THE LIGHT COMES ON EVEN WHEN NO ONE IS IN THE SEAT. I'VE GOOGLED THIS AND IT SEEMS A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THIS. I'M NOT SURE IF THE AIRBAG IS REALLY EFFECTED OR IF IT IS A SENSOR MALFUNCTION. I HAD ALREADY SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT UNDER 10586821 DUE TO THE RADIATOR BUT DID NOT INCLUDE THAT THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE REASON THAT RADIATOR WENT OUT WAS BECAUSE OF THE MALFUNCTION OF THE WATER PUMP WHICH I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE. I WAS TOLD TO AMEND THE COMPLAINT ONCE RECEIVED BUT I NEVER RECEIVED ANYTHING IN THE MAIL. BMW KNOWS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM AND REFUSES TO FIX IT. ALSO THE PASSENGER AIRBAG INDICATOR HAS BEEN ON FOR OVER A YEAR. I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE AND HAVE THE AIRBAGS AND SENSORS REPLACE. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF HAVING SOMETHING THAT IS SUPPOSE TO BE FOR SAFETY BUT IT'S MALFUNCTIONING. THEREFORE I HAVE AIRBAGS THAT ARE NOT GOING TO PROTECT ANYONE IN THE COURSE OF AN ACCIDENT. THIS IS ALSO A COMMON PROBLEM WITH BMW. THIS IS NOT AN AGE OF CAR ITEM BECAUSE I HAD LESS THAN 40,000 MILES WHEN THE INDICATOR CAME ON. *TR

TRAVELING ON EXPRESSWAY AT APPROX 60 MPH COLLIDED WITH A VEHICLE HITTING HIM ON REAR. I SUSTAINED INJURY TO MY CHEST AS A RESULT OF IMPACT AGAINST THE STEERING WHEEL BECAUSE THE AIRBAG DIDN'T DEPLOY. I LEARNED THAT BMW HAS RECALLED AIRBAGS ON SEVERAL MODELS AND BELIEVE THE 2008 X5S SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. MY VEHICLE IS AT A COLLISION CENTER BUT I CAN MAKE IT AVAILABLE IN CASE NHTSA EXPERTS WOULD LIKE TO INVESTIGATE IF AIRBAG SENSORS ARE WORKING PROPERLY ON THIS MODEL. WHEN A PEOPLE SEAT ON THE PASSENGER SEAT, THE LIGHT "AIRBAG OF THE PASSENGER SEAT IS OFF" IS ON. AND THE LED PANEL SHOWS "RESTRAIN SYSTEM MALFUNCTION". I GET MY CAR CHECKED AT THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THIS IS DUE TO THE FAULT OF THE SENSOR IN THE SEAT AND WILL MAKE THE AIRBAG NOT DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT. ACTUALLY, THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN THERE FOR A WHILE BUT ONLY HAPPEN OCCASIONALLY (ONE TIME A MONTH), AND CAN BE SOLVED BY CHANGE SITTING POSITION A LITTLE BIT. WHEN I CHECKED IN THE SERVICE, NOTHING WRONG WAS FOUND. HE SAID THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS IN OLDER MODELS (E.G. 2005, 2006), WHICH ARE IN THE RECALL LIST OF BMW. BUT MINE IS NOT IN AND I NEED TO PAY $1400 TO GET IT REPAIRED. I THINK THIS IS A REALLY IMPORTANT ISSUE SINCE IT DISABLES THE AIRBAG, WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY EQUIPMENT. MY CAR IS IN A VERY GOOD CONDITION AND SERVICED REGULARLY. THERE IS NO REASON IT FAULTS IN SUCH A LOW MILEAGE AND AGE. MANY USERS IN THE BMW FORUM HAS THE SAME ISSUE, BUT IS UNDER RISK OR GOT TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. I HOPE BMW CAN TAKE CARE OF THIS ISSUE TO RECALL THE CARS THAT ARE POTENTIALLY IN RISK. *TR
