Your car jumps or jerks when you start the engine and has transmission problems where it doesn't shift smoothly while driving. The car continues to jump between gears and speeds don't respond properly. You've been in at least one accident because of this jumping behavior and are concerned about safety. The transmission and engine control system may need diagnostic testing and repair to identify why the car is lurching unexpectedly.

BMW 2004 545I ACTIVE STEERING PROBLEM. MY STEERING WHEEL SUDDENLY SHIFTED TO THE RIGHT. THE ACTIVE STEERING LIGHT WENT ON. NOW THE CAR DRIVES STRAIGHT WITH THE STEERING WHEEL TILTED TO THE RIGHT. THIS IS CAUSED BY THE BATTERY VOLTAGE DROP. CAR STARTS TO SHUT DOWN MAJOR COMPONENTS ACTIVE STEERING, TRANSMISSION, NAVIGATION, AND I-DRIVE SYSTEM WHICH CONTROLS THE WHOLE CARS ELECTRONICS. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 BMW X5. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE AND VIBRATE WHICH MADE IT DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT HAS NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE CONTACT IS CONCERNED THAT THE FAILURE COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A CRASH TO OCCUR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING HIS 2004 BMW X5 (51400 FAILURE MILEAGE) AT 55 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO TURN VIOLENTLY FROM RIGHT TO LEFT CONSTANTLY FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES. ONCE THE CONTACT SLOWED THE VEHICLE DOWN TO 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE DROVE APPROPRIATELY, UNTIL HE HIT A BUMP OR HE HAD TO MAKE A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO DETERMINED THAT THE WHEEL SENSOR WAS DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED.
