NHTSA Campaign: 20V283000

Component: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 X1 xDrive28i, X1 sDrive28i, X2 xDrive28i and X2 sDrive28i, 2020 MINI Clubman Cooper S All4, 2021 MINI Hardtop 2 Door (Cooper, Cooper S, John Cooper Works and Cooper S E) and MINI Hardtop 4 Door (Cooper and Cooper S) vehicles. Due to a problem with the rollover sensor within the air bag control unit, in the event of a rollover crash, the head air bag, seat belt pretensioners and other safety systems, may not activate.

Risk: If the safety systems do not deploy as intended in a roll over crash, it may increase the risk of injury.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag control unit, free of charge. The recall began July 17, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525.

Your fuel tank was punctured while driving on the freeway, causing your car to lose power. The plastic fuel tank is mounted low on the right side of the undercarriage, making it vulnerable to damage from road debris like stones. BMW appears to have recognized this design issue, as 2023 models and newer include additional underbody protection that wasn't present on earlier years like yours.

Your check engine light came on, and the dealership diagnosed fuel in the NVLD (evaporative emissions) system, requiring replacement of the NVLD canister, charcoal canister, and tank vent valve. The dealership suggested this was caused by overfilling the fuel tank, though you're confident you never overfill. You're concerned this defect could cause fires if other owners don't address it and want BMW to investigate the frequency of this problem.

Your sunroof suddenly shattered into small pieces while you were driving on an elevated expressway, with no impact to the vehicle and no warning signs beforehand. The sunroof glass broke spontaneously without any visible cause. The repair will likely involve replacing the entire sunroof assembly and glass panel.

Your trunk cover is shedding small pieces of plastic or fiberglass that can embed in your skin, causing significant pain and difficulty removing them. Multiple shards have been reported getting lodged in skin after contact with the trunk cover. The trunk cover panel may need to be replaced or the material may need to be refinished to stop the shedding.

A rock from another vehicle damaged your X1's lower radiator on the highway, causing complete coolant loss. BMW confirmed the car didn't come with a protective radiator guard from the factory, though the guard is available as an optional part. The repair wasn't covered under warranty since BMW classifies impact damage as not covered, and you had to file a claim with your insurance instead.

A rock from another vehicle damaged your X1's lower radiator on the highway, causing you to lose all coolant. Your BMW dealer confirmed the car didn't come with a protective guard for the radiator, though replacement radiators do include one. BMW denied warranty coverage for the damage, so you had to file an insurance claim instead.

FireFiled: Aug 2024

Your car experienced multiple serious problems including a stuck trunk door, backup camera malfunction, drivetrain warning light, and spontaneous alarm activation. Most critically, your car caught fire under the hood near the driver's side windshield, which you were able to extinguish with a water hose before emergency services arrived. The vehicle was declared a total loss by your insurance company. This issue may require a complete electrical system inspection and battery/charging system diagnosis to identify the fire's root cause.

CrashFiled: Aug 2021

You were in a front-end crash at 30-35 mph, and neither the airbags nor the seatbelt locked during impact. Your chest hit the steering wheel, resulting in chest pain and bruising that required emergency hospital transport. The vehicle sustained significant front-end damage including a burst radiator. Once the police report is available, the vehicle will be inspected at a repair center to investigate why the safety systems failed to deploy.

Your turbo's wastegate actuator failed, causing your engine to suddenly lose power and triggering a drivetrain malfunction warning on your dashboard. An independent mechanic confirmed the issue. BMW has reportedly extended warranty coverage to 15 years/150,000 miles for this same part on similar 2017-2020 models. Fixing this will likely require replacing the wastegate actuator assembly on your turbocharger.

Filed: May 2024

Your vehicle experienced multiple issues starting with a battery and powertrain problem that produced loud noise from underneath, along with a rear tail light fault code. The service center forgot to reinstall clamps, and after driving over 200 miles, the fault code returned — the dealer admitted negligence. Your car then cycled in and out of service for several months (September 2023 through February 2024) with repeated electrical and brake-related codes, leaving you concerned about safety and potential manufacturer defects. Repairs may involve replacing battery terminals, reinstalling engine bay clamps, diagnosing electrical faults, and troubleshooting brake system sensors and wiring.

Filed: May 2024

Your driver's side seatbelt is showing unusual wear and tearing at just 21,000 miles, which you don't believe is normal for a vehicle this new. The tear is getting larger, and you're concerned this could be a safety risk in an accident or sudden stop. The dealer has indicated the seatbelt needs to be replaced. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the entire seatbelt assembly with a new one.

Filed: Nov 2022

Your car's brake pad warning came on, but the dealer couldn't see you for nearly two weeks. By the time you arrived, the brake pads had worn so much that the rotors were also damaged, requiring replacement of both parts. You're concerned the warning system waited too long to alert you and didn't convey enough urgency, which could have put you and others at risk if your brakes had failed.
