POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 TUNDRA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3-JOINT TYPE PROPELLER SHAFT. DUE TO IMPROPER CASTING OF THE SLIP YOKES, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SLIP YOKE MAY BREAK, CAUSING THE PROPELLER SHAFT TO SEPARATE AT THE JOINT AND COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE ROAD SURFACE.
Fix: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND INSPECT THE PROPELLER SHAFT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE IT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

This happened multiple times on the highway, especially when starting a cold engine, creating a dangerous situation where other vehicles nearly hit you from behind. The check engine light and traction control light are on.

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was shaking and vibrating and was making an abnormally loud sound. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the driveshaft was fractured. The contact was notified of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 11V254000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The local dealer was informed of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
AT ABOUT 2,000 MILES AGO THE TRANSMISSION STARTED SHAKING AND RUMBLING MAINLY WHEN IT WAS IN 5TH GEAR. THE DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS GOING BAD AND WILL NEED REPLACED FOR $3,000. THE TRUCK ONLY HAVE 90K ON IT, AND I CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE IT REPLACED. AT JUST OVER 90K ON THE TRUCK THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD NOT ALREADY BE GOING OUT. *TR
I PUT VEHICLE IN PARK AND GOT OUT TO CLOSE A GATE ON MY FARM PROPERTY. WHEN I REALIZED THE VEHICLE STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS, I TRIED TO GET BACK IN TO STOP IT. THE DOOR KNOCKED ME DOWN AND PICK UP ALMOST RAN OVER ME. I DID A BACKWARDS SUMMERSALT TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF ROLLING PICKUP. WHEN I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET UP AND GET TO PICK UP, IT HAD SLOWED DUE TO THE JACK KNIFING OF THE BALE BUGGY I WAS TOWING. PLASTIC AND RUBBER IN THE SHIFTER HAD TO BE PUSHED BACK INSIDE SHIFTER CASE BEFORE I COULD PUT BACK IN PARK POSITION. LATER THAT SAME DAY, I PUT IN PARK IN PARKING LOT AND IT JUMPED INTO REVERSE AGAIN. LUCKILY I WAS STILL IN VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM IS IN THE SHIFTER CONSOLE BUT ACTUAL PROBLEM IS UNKNOWN. THIS HAS HAPPENED A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES. TWICE I WAS OUT OF VEHICLE. TWICE I WAS STILL IN DRIVERS SEAT. ONLY ONE TIME DID THIS PROBLEM RESULT IN INJURY.
CAR IS LOSING POWER WHILE DRIVING.
I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT A NOISE IN THE FRONT END OF THE TRUCK (FRONT DIFFERENTIAL AND SHAFT) WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING STILL ON COLD AND AT A SPEED LOWER THAN 50MPH. I DO NOT KNOW IF IT COULD LEAD ME TO HAVE A CAR ACCIDENT INTO THE CITY. I HAVE SEEN MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME COMPLAIN WITH ABSOLUTELY NEW TUNDRAS. I WONDER IF IT IS ABOUT TIME FOR TOYOTA TUNDRA PUT HANDS ON IT AND FIX THIS OLD PROBLEM.
THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS AN INTERMITTENT RUBBING OR METAL-ON-METAL GRINDING NOISE FROM THE REAR WHEELS WHEN MAKING TURNS. INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE REAR BRAKE DISKS ARE RUBBING ON THE METAL BRAKE DISK SHIELD DURING LATERAL LOADING EXPERIENCED IN TURNS. THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN MORE FREQUENT AND MORE PRONOUNCED OVER THE PAST 12-18 MONTHS AND 10-15K MILES. TOYOTA BELIEVES THE CAUSE IS FAILED REAR AXLE BEARINGS. THE VEHICLE HAS ABOUT 72K MILES AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY AND AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. TOYOTA HAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (T-SB-0013-13) ON THE ISSUE BUT THEY CLAIM THIS IS NORMAL WEAR AND WILL NOT WARRANTY THE PROBLEM. IN MY OPINION THIS IS A SERIOUS DEFECT OF A MAJOR DRIVE TRAIN SYSTEM AND NOT NORMAL WEAR.
A CLUNKING NOISE COMING FROM REAR DRIVESHAFT WHEN COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AT LOW SPEEDS. FEELS LIKE A DROP IN THE REAR END OR A SLIGHT BUMP AFTER SETTING STILL FOR A FEW SECONDS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE DECELERATED AND STALLED. ALL THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN UNKNOWN LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED DUE TO THE DIAGNOSTIC FEES. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, WHILE REVERSING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE FAILURE THEN REOCCURRED AND WAS TOWED BACK TO THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT RODENTS WERE GETTING INTO THE ENGINE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, AND WERE CHEWING THROUGH THE WIRING. AS A RESULT, THE WIRING HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. *TT
TRUCK IS A 2011 TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH 66,000 MILES. TRUCK HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH FAULTY LEFT REAR AXLE BEARING THAT IS CREATING A HOWL TYPE NOISE WHILE DRIVING. NOISE IS PREDOMINANT AT 30-40 MPH. TOYOTA NEEDS TO EXTEND T-SB-0013-13 FOR CERTAIN 2011 MODEL TUNDRAS.

THE VEHICLE'S SPEED SUDDENLY REDUCED TO APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE AIR PUMP ASSEMBLY UNIT WAS FAULTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SECONDARY AIR PUMP WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. WHEN PARKING ON MY DRIVEWAY IN THE WINTER AND MOVE THE GEAR SELECTOR TO PARK, THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT LOCK IN PARK. THE VEHICLE REMAINS IN NEUTRAL. TODAY I WAS HALFWAY OUT OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE TRUCK STARTED TO ROLL DOWNHILL. ONE FOOT WAS ON THE GROUND AND I WAS FALLING BACKWARD. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GRAB THE WHEEL TO KEEP MYSELF FROM FALLING UNDER THE VEHICLE. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT MY INJURIES WOULD HAVE BEEN SIGNIFICANT HAD I NOT GRABBED THE WHEEL. I REPORTED THIS TO THE DEALERSHIP LAST YEAR WHEN THIS FIRST OCCURRED. THE DEALER SAID THEY DID NOT FIND A THING WRONG. *TR
?ON 12/26/2014, I STARTED MY TUNDRA, PLACED IT INTO GEAR AFTER A 30 SECOND PAUSE AND PROCEEDED TO LITERALLY STAND ON MY BREAKS TO STOP THE VEHICLE FROM LURCHING FORWARD. THE BACK TIRES SPUN CAUSING SMOKE TO EMANATE FROM THE SCREECHING TIRES. AT THE TIME I PLACED THE VEHICLE IN GEAR, A PEDESTRIAN WAS WALKING IN FRONT OF THE TUNDRA. I ALMOST SQUASHED THEM.? *JS
2011 TOYOTA TUNDRA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE AIR BAGS AND TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED HER HUSBAND TURNED DOWN THE WRONG STREET, AND WHEN HE WENT TO TURN AROUND, HE PUT THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE, AND STEPPED ON THE GAS, BUT THE VEHICLE WENT FORWARD OVER A FORTY FOOT EMBANKMENT AND RAN INTO A LARGE BOULDER AND A TREE. WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPPED IT WAS STILL IN REVERSE AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONSUMER STATED THE MAIN ISSUE, WAS THE VEHICLE WAS IN REVERSE, BUT THE TRUCK WENT FORWARD. ACCORDING TO EYE WITNESSES, IT APPEARED HER HUSBAND WAS HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE TRANSMISSION.
I HAVE A 2011 TUNDRA SR5 WITH A LOUD CLICKING NOISE THAT HAS BEEN COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN NEAR THE SHIFT LEVER. WHILE IN PARK, THE BRAKE PEDAL MUST BE PRESSED IN ORDER TO SHIFT THE TRUCK INTO GEAR. WHEN I PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL, A LOUD CLICK CAN BE HEARD FROM THE COLUMN SHIFTER. THIS IS THE COLUMN SHIFT LOCKOUT SOLENOID AND IS NORMAL. HOWEVER, RECENTLY I CAN HEAR THE SOLENOID CLICKING ANYTIME I DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL WHILE I'M IN GEAR. SOMETIMES IT IS A CLICK, TWO CLICKS AND SOMETIMES IT IS SERIES OF RAPID CLICKS. I HAVE TAKEN THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER TWICE. THE FIRST TIME I WAS TOLD THE CLICKING WAS NORMAL WHILE IN PARK AND THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE IT WHILE IN GEAR. THE SECOND TIME I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY "BLEW OUT THE EXCESS GREASE" FROM THE SHIFT LOCK. THEIR BEST EXPLANATION IS THAT THE COLUMN SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID COMES FROM THE FACTORY AS A SEALED UNIT AND IS PACKED WITH GREASE. THE 'EXCESS' GREASE CAN KEEP THE LOCKING ARM FROM FULLY RETRACKING OR ENGAGING AND THE SOLENOID WILL CHATTER BECAUSE IT IS TRYING TO PUT IT INTO POSITION. *TR
