Your vehicle stalled while driving at 50 MPH and then hesitated, refusing to accelerate above that speed. The check engine light came on, and while the engine restarted, the stalling happened again. Your dealer diagnosed a failed secondary air injection pump as the cause. The fix will involve replacing the secondary air injection pump.

You can smell burning oil inside the cabin, and you're concerned about a potential fire risk. The dealer has repaired the first two leaks and is currently working on the driver's side cam tower leak, though Toyota has declined to address the recurring issue. This will likely require replacement of valve cover gaskets and cam tower seals to stop the leaks permanently.

Truck goes into low power mode or "limp" and has difficulty accelerating. The check engine light is on, “VSC OFF” light blinks on and off, as well as the “slippery tire” sign stays on. Very dangerous if this happens when driving on an expressway as you can't drive over 45 mph in low power mode. This is a known issue with Air Injection Pumps and Air Switching Valves for Toyota Tundra trucks between 2007-2008. Toyota extended the factory warranty instead of offering a recall. Due to the factory warranty extension Toyota would not fix this problem until it manifested, and it usually doesn't manifest until after the extension of the factory warranty has expired.

I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE SECONDARY AIR PUMP FAILED ON MY VEHICLE. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD I WOULD BE $3500 TO REPAIR. THIS IS KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE TUNDRA. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT TOYOTA HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR THIS BUT IT EXPIRED AFTER 10 YEARS OR 150,000, I HAVE 121,000. WHEN THE PUMP FAILS IT CAUSES THE VEHICAL TO GO INTO LIMP MODE. I RAN A ERRAND TODAY AND THE TRUCK RAN FINE. I WENT TO THE STORE AND RETURNED TO THE TRUCK. I STARTED IT AND THE THE VSC LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. AS I HEADED INTO TRAFFIC THE VEHICAL WOULD NOT ACCELERATE TO KEEP UP WITH THE TRAFFIC AND ALMOST GOT REARENDED. TOYOTA SHOULD OF HAD A RECALL ON THIS BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY FEATURE AND COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THIS AIR PUMP IS INSTALLED ON TUNDRAS AND OTHER MODELS. I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK NEW IN 2008 AND HAVE SERVICED IT ON THE MFG SCHEDULE. SINCE THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE REPLACED THE PUMPS DURING REGULAR MAINTENANCE INSTEAD OF NOT DOING NOTHING AND HOPE IT DOES NOT OCCUR. EVEN IF I REPLACE THE PUMPS WHAT SAYS IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. I LOST CONFIDENCE IN MY TRUCK AND AM AFRAID IT MIGHT HAPPEN AGAIN.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE WAS EXPIRED. THE MANUFACTURER OPENED CASE NUMBER: 1809192901. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 107,404.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. CODES INDICATED FAILED SECONDARY AIR INTAKE VALVE. TOOK IT TO DEALER WHO SAID I WAS ONE DAY OUTSIDE OF EXTENDED WARRANTY. NO WARNING OF ANY CONSEQUENCES OF NOT IMMEDIATELY ADDRESSING. DRIVING HOME ON INTERSTATE TRUCK TRUCK SUDDENLY HAD SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS START TO FLASH AND WOULD NOT ACCELLERATE ABOVE 35. I WAS TRAPPED IN SUBSTANTIAL TRUCK TRAFFIC WITH NOWHERE TO PULL OFF AND COULDN'T EVEN CLIMB HILLS WITHOUT POWER DECREASING FURTHER. FOUND OUT THIS INTENTIONAL. TRUCK WAS PUT IN "LIMP" MODE BY PROGRAMMING. TO RESTRICT SPEED AND ACCELLERATION WITHOUT WARNING FOR A NONESSENTIAL FAULT WHICH IS NOT A THREAT TO ENGINE OPERATION IS INSANE.

ALSO CAUSES THE TRUCK TO GO INTO LIMP MODE RESULTING IN SEVERE LOSS OF POWER WHICH CAN BE DANGEROUS IN THE WRONG SITUATION. MY RESEARCH INDICATES THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND VERY EXPENSIVE TO FIX. TOYOTA WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM IF YOUR TRUCK HAS OVER 150000MI OR 10 YEARS SINCE FIRST USE. THIS AFFECTS ALL TUNDRA AND IS A KNOWN PROBLEM. TOYOTA HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THIS ISSUE TWICE, SO THEY KNOW THIS SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE. I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THE AFFECTED VEHICLES.

CODE 2440. CONTROL VALVE STUCK IN AIR INJECTION PUMP. FAILED FOR THE 2ND TIME UPON STARTUP. FIRST FAILED AT 68K MILES EARLY 2013. TOYOTA REPLACED IT FOR FREE. THEY'VE HAD SO MANY FAIL THAT THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 10 YR, 150K MILES. THEN IT JUST FAILED AGAIN AT 154K MILES. THEY WON'T WARRANTY THE 2ND ONE BECAUSE IT'S 4K MILES OUT. EVEN THOUGH THE PART ONLY HAS 86K MILES ON IT. COST IS $2100 FROM THE DEALER! 1200 OF THAT IS JUST THE PARTS. FROM WHAT I'VE READ THIS PART IS ONLY REQUIRED FOR THE FIRST COUPLE MINUTES OF OPERATION ON A COLD START. IT PREHEATS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER SO IT WORKS BETTER. THE EPA SHOULD BE EXEMPTING MINOR DISCREPENCIES IN THEIR EMISSIONS LAWS WHILE WORKING WITH MANUFACTURERS TO DEVELOP SENSIBLE SOLUTIONS. IN THE MEANTIME WE GET STUCK WITH COMPANIES THAT DO A SHODDY JOB DESIGNING THE SYSTEM, PLACE IT IN A TERRIBLE LOCATION REQUIRING MANY HOURS TO DO THE REPLACEMENT, AND THEN ARE BOUND BY LAW (IN MY STATE) TO MAINTAIN THE EQUIPMENT. THE TRUCK IS IN LIMP MODE AND IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.....GUESS I HAVE TO SHELL OUT THE CASH. AFTER READING HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ON MULTIPLE TRUCK FORUMS AND EXPERIENCING THE PART TO FAIL TWICE FIRSTHAND, IT'S OBVIOUS THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM. THE CSR FROM TOYOTA ACTED LIKE THEY DID ME A FAVOR BY "VOLUNTARILY" EXTENDING THE WARRANTY TO 150K MILES. NO COMPANY "VOLUNTARILY" DOES THIS. I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO CONSIDER HAVING THEM ISSUE A PROPER RECALL, EXEMPTING THE AFFECTED MAKE/MODEL YEARS FROM EMISSIONS STANDARDS FOR A FAILED SYSTEM WHICH WOULD ALLOW OWNERS TO BYPASS THE SYSTEM LEGALLY FOR ABOUT $150 IN PARTS (HARNESS & VALVE PORT BLOCKING PLATES), OR PRESSURING TOYOTA TO EXTEND WARRANTY COVERAGE TO THE PART (NOT THE TRUCK) IF IT FAILS IN THE SAME WAY. A $2000+ FIX ON A NON-ESSENTIAL COMPONENT SHOULD NOT BE A 75K MILE RECURRING COST.

CASE # [XXX] ( FILED WITH TOYOTA) ON JAN 3RD WHILE RETURNING HOME FROM HAVING BRAKES REPLACED ON MY 2008 TUNDRA MY VEHICLE ENGINE DIED ON A BUSY 4 LANE ROAD WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC. I LOST MY ABILITY TO STEER IMMEDIATELY. FORTUNATELY I WAS IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE AND WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO A PARKING LOT BEFORE I LOST TOTAL MOMENTUM OF THE VEHICLE. I TRIED RESTARTING AND IT WOULD NOT. I CHECKED ALL THE INDICATERS AND EVERYTHING APPEARED NORMAL. FUEL GAUGE REGISTERED 1/4 FULL WHICH WOULD EQUATE TO APPROXIMATELY 5-7 GALLONS. AFTER EXHAUSTING ALL EFFORTS TO RESTART THE TRUCK I CALLED FOR A TOW TRUCK. WHEN THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED I EXPLAINED TO HIM WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND HE SUGGESTED IT MIGHT BE OUT OF GAS!!!...I SHOWED HIM THE FUEL GAGE INDICATOR SHOWING THE 1/4 LEVEL AND HE TOLD ME THAT HIS DAD ALSO HAD A TUNDRA AND HAD EXPERIENCED ISSUES WITH THE FUEL TANK FLOAT HANGING GIVING FALSE READINGS OF WHAT THE ACTUAL FUEL LEVEL WAS. HE SUGGESTED WE TAKE THE TRUCK TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION AND PUT A FEW GALLONS IN PRIOR TO TAKING THE TRUCK TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. ONCE WE ADDED SOME GASOLINE THE TRUCK STARTED RIGHT UP. I WAS SHOCKED AND UPSET FOR A NUMBER OF REASON. 1. I JUST PAID A TOW SERVICE $75 DOLLARS FOR TAKING ME DOWN THE ROAD ABOUT A HALF BLOCK TO A LOCAL CONVENIENT STORE TO PUT GAS IN MY TRUCK. 2. I STARTED REALIZING WHAT A DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE THIS IS. I COULD HAVE JUST AS WELL BEEN TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 70 MILES PER HOUR AND HAVE MY ENGINE JUST QUIT ON ME!! TRUCK HAS BEEN TICKING SINCE ABOUT A MONTH AFTER I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW, I JUST ASSUMED THAT'S THE WAY IT WAS SINCE IT QUIETS AFTER WARMS UP. TURNS OUT MANIFOLD IS CRACKED BY THE PUMP. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE TRUCK STARTED TO MAKE A LOUD CLICKING NOISE. I WAS ONLY A FEW BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE. I WENT HOME, THE TRUCK WOULDN'T START AGAIN.MY 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAD AN "ENGINE FAILURE" AT 62000 MILES. FIRST THEY SAID $23,000 FOR A NEW ENGINE. THEN AFTER MONTHS AND MANY HOURS ON THE PHONE, THEY TOOK THE ENGINE APART TO FIND THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER TOOK PICTURES AND SENT THEM TO TOYOTA. THEY SAID A VALVE OR VALVE SPRING FELL THROUGH AND TORE EVERYTHING UP. IT NEEDED A NEW SHORT BLOCK AND RIGHT HEAD ($14,000). TOYOTA ADMITTED 100% FAULT AND SAID BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS 2000 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY THEY WILL COVER ONLY 50% UNDER " GOODWILL ASSISTANCE" . SO I BOUGHT THE MOTOR TREND TRUCK OF THE YEAR ( BRAND NEW) AND HAD TO TAKE OUT A LOAN FOR $7000 TO GET THE ENGINE FIXED. I WAS OUT A VEHICLE FOR 4 MONTHS. *JS

MY TRUCK WAS PARKED FOR 3 DAYS, THEN WHEN I STARTED THE ENGINE ALL OF THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON STEADY, AND 4LO LIGHT FLASHED, TRUCK WOULD NOT TRAVEL OVER 30 MPH AND BECAME VERY SLUGGISH. THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES IN ONE WEEK, AND DISCONNECTING BATTERY FOR A FEW MINUTES CLEARED THE PROBLEM. LOCAL DEALERSHIP SAID THE PROBLEM IS A "FAILED ACTUATOR ECU ASSEMBLY FAILED COMMUNICATION C1201". COST OF REPAIR IS $2,280.41. WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER REPAIR BECAUSE THIS PART IS ONLY COVERED BY THE 3 YEAR/36000 MILE WARRANTY. DRIVETRAIN WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THIS COMPONENT. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE WHEN THIS PROBLEM OCCURS WHILE DRIVING THERE IS NO WARNING AND COULD RESULT IN A MULTIPLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT. THE ONLY OTHER PART THAT CAUSES THIS PROBLEM IS AN AIR PUMP ASSEMBLY WHICH IS NOW REQUIRED TO BE COVERED BY TOYOTA FOR 10 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES. VERY DISCOURAGING TO OWN A TRUCK LESS THAN FIVE YEARS OLD WITH 55,000 MILES AND REQUIRES A $2300 REPAIR. *TR

THE ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENGINE WENT INTO LIMP MODE, WHICH REDUCES ENGINE POWER MAKING IT DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON FROM THE EMISSIONS VALVE SET FAILING. WHEN REPAIRED BY DEALER THEY ALSO DISCOVERED A CRACKED MANIFOLD. THIS EMISSIONS VALVE SET FAILURE SEEMS TO BE VERY COMMON ON 2008 TUNDRAS AND IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR. TO MY SURPRISE THE MANIFOLD WAS CRACKED AND THAT IS A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR AND MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE EMISSIONS VALVE SET FAILURE. TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL THEIR EMISSIONS VALVE SET AND REDESIGN IT SO IT DOES NOT FAIL, AND IS LESS EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE, AND FINALLY THEY SHOULD NOT PROGRAM THE ENGINE TO GO INTO LIMP MODE IF THIS FAILURE OCCURS, AS IT CAN CAUSE YOU TO LOSE POWER WHILE DRIVING IN VARIOUS CONDITIONS THAT REQUIRE POWER TO GET OFF THE ROAD SAFELY.

EMISSIONS VALVE AND RELATED PUMPS FAILED CAUSING A SIGNIFICANT LOSS IN POWER. THIS HAPPENED WHEN TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY IN UPSTATE VERMONT. SUDDENLY MY TRUCK LOST SIGNIFICANT POWER, AND WOULD RAPIDLY DECELARATE EVERYTIME I APPROACH A POSITIVE GRADE IN THE ROAD. TRUCK WENT INTO "LIMP" MODE AND THE VSC, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THE "TRACTION" LIGHT ALL CAME ON. TOOK IT TO AUTOZONE TO GET A READ OUT AND IT HAD A P2442 FOR A SUBARU, BUT WAS FIGURED TO BE THE ASV (AIR SWITCH VALVE) OR THE AIP (AIR INDUCTION PUMP) ON BANK 2. CONSIDERING THAT MY TRUCK IS OUT OF WARRANTY WITH 62000 MILES AND ALL THE FORUM AND WEBSITES THAT I HAVE BEEN TO THAT TOLD ME IT WOULD CAST ANY WHERE FROM 1000 TO 5000 BUCKS TO FIX, I CHECKED IT OUT MYSELF. THE ASV ON THE DRIVER SIDE HAS A METAL PLATE THAT IS BROKEN AND IS KEEPING THE VALVE OPENED. I HAVE CALLED A DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THEY HAVE NO CLUE WHEN THE PARTS COULD BE IN BECAUSE OF THE TSUNAMI IN JAPAN. I AM VERY UPSET AS TO THIS ISSUE AS I AM NOT ABLE TO BYPASS THE IT AND GET MY TRUCK RUNNING CORRECTLY. TOYOTA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND MAKE A RECALL ON THESE PUMPS AND VALVES. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SHIFTED INTO LIMP MODE. THE DEALER REPLACED TWO AIR INJECTION SWITCH VALVES IN APRIL 2010. THE FAILURE OCCURRED AGAIN ON JANUARY 31, 2011 AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO CLEARED THE CODE. ON FEBRUARY 12, 2011 THE FAILURE RECURRED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SECOND DEALER. THE DEALER ADVISED HIM THAT TWO AIR INJECTION SWITCH VALVES AND TWO AIR PUMPS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE DEALERS POSSESSION WHEN THE COMPLAINT ALTHOUGH THE CONTACT HAD AUTHORIZED THE REPAIR. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 180,000.

NOW ALL MY FAMILY ARE EXPERIEMENTING ALL KIND OF ALLERGIES INCLUDE HAY FEVER_TYPE SYMPTOMS, SUCH AS SNEEZING, RUNNY NOSE, RED EYES AND SKIN RASH. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 13,5000. THE CONSUMER STATED THE TRANSMISSION WOULD HESITATE DURING TAKE OFF AS WELL AS DURING COLD TEMPERATURES AND THE ENGINE MADE A RATTLE SOUND. THE RADIO WOULD COME ON AND CHANGE STATIONS BY ITSELF. THE CONSUMER STATED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK EVEN BEFORE A RECALL WAS ISSUED. THE PROBLEM WITH MY TUNDRA CONCERNS THE ENGINE. THREE TIMES SINCE MARCH 2009 THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME ON. EACH TIME I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY AGREE THERE IS A PROBLEM HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AND THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM ACCORDING TO THE DEALER IS A STICKING VALVE IN THE ENGINE COMPONENT. THE ONE TIME I DID GET IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER IN SOUTH DAKOTA, WHEN THE PROBLEM WAS STILL OCCURRING, I WAS TOLD THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE PART SO THEY COULDN'T FIX IT. WHEN THIS PROBLEM OCCURS, THE ENGINE ON OCCASION HAS HESITATED AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. THIS WAS EXPLAINED BOTH TO THE DEALER AND THE 'CONSUMER REP.' (COMPLIANT 0911112241).
