POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
ON CERTAIN 4-WHEEL DRIVE PICKUP TRUCKS, DUE TO THE IMPROPER HEAT TREATMENT OF THE SLIP YOKES THAT HAD BEEN REWORKED DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS, THE HARDNESS OF THE SLIP YOKE MAY BE INSUFFICIENT.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SLIP YOKE AND REPLACE THE PROPELLER SHAFT IF NECESSARY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 7, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the subframe needed to be replaced. Additionally, the contact was informed that the driveshaft was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 167,000.
THE FRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED HOLES IN SOME SPOTS. EXHAUST IS RUSTED. EXHAUST HANGERS HAVE RUSTED APART. FUEL TANK HANGERS ARE RUSTED ALMOST APART. ALL BRAKE LINES ARE RUSTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE TAILSHAFT HOUSING SEAL TWICE HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO NORTH BAKERSFIELD TOYOTA (19651 INDUSTRY PKWY DR, BAKERSFIELD, CA 93308, (661) 615-1100) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE DRIVELINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V579000 (POWER TRAIN) DUE TO THE VEHICLE BEING A 2 WHEEL DRIVE AND NOT A 4 WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS PUT IN MY 07 TUNDRA IN 2018 (DO TO IMPROPER SERVICE) WORKED WELL AT THAT TIME. IN 2019 TAIL SHAFT SEAL STARTED TO LEAK AGAIN WAS THEN REPLACED WITH A NEW SEAL GENIUNE TOYOTA SEAL HAS WORKED WELL FOR ABOUT 3K MILES AND HAS STARTED TO LEAK AGAIN IT SEEMS TO ONLY LEAK AFTER ONCE THE TRUCK GETS WARMED UP AND ONLY WHEN IT IS IN MOTION ON HWY OR STREETS. I AM SEEING A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THIS! WILL INCLUDE LINKS. I SEE RECALLS FOR 07 4WD FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT NOT FOR THE 2WD WHY IT SOUNDS LIKE THE SAME PROBLEM EXACTLY, AND FEEL THIS COULD BE A BIG SAFETY PROBLEM LEADING TO AN ACCIDENT, FIRE OR DEATH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS DUE TO THE DIAGNOSTIC FEES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT OF AN UPDATED WARRANTY THAT WAS ISSUED IN 2017, WHICH HAD EXPIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE FRAME OF THE BED WAS RUSTED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATIONS FROM THE MANUFACTURER ABOUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND RECALL CAMPAIGNS FOR THE TRANSMISSION AND RUST. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME ON. AS WELL AS THE LIGHTS STATING THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN DISABLED. THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF THIRD GEAR AND THE VSC BEING OFF IS CAUSING AN UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITION DUE TO SLIPPING TIRES AROUND CORNERS AT NORMAL SPEEDS. UPON CHECKING THE ENGINE CODE P2714 AND P0751 I HAVE COME TO FIND OUT THERE IS AN INTERNAL TOYOTA TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN CIRCULATING THEIR DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENTS DATING BACK TO NOVEMBER 28, 2007 WHEN THIS ISSUE WAS FIRST DISCOVERED. THE BULLETIN IS NAMED TC017-07. ALSO UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS POSTS ABOUT THIS CODE AND THE EXACT ISSUES MY VEHICLE SUFFERS FROM ON MULTIPLE TOYOTA TUNDRA MESSAGE AND INTERNET CHAT GROUPS. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE WHICH COULD EASILY CAUSE LOSS OF LIFE OR PROPERTY IF THESE VEHICLES WITH THIS ISSUE ARE SUDDENLY PRONE TO THE VSC AND TRANSMISSION ACTING ABNORMALLY. THIS ISSUE FOR ME CAME UP VERY SUDDENLY WITH NO PRIOR WARNING AS THE DASH LIGHTS CAME IN WHILE DRIVING. I WILL BE ASKING TOTOTA TO FIX THIS ISSUE AT THEIR COST WITH THE REMEDY THEY DESCRIBE IN THEIR SERVICE BULLETIN. THE REMEDY THEY RECOMMEND IS TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AND REPROGRAM THE ECM.

I HAD ALL THE DASH LIGHTS FLASHING AND THE TRANSFER CASE STUCK IN 4WHEEL DRIVE LOW, AN ENGINE MISFIRE AND VIBRATION. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID IT WAS AN AIR PUMP VALVE PROBLEM. HE CLEARED THE CODES IN THE COMPUTER AND I DROVE IT HOME. THE NEXT MORNING IT DID THE SAME THING. I TOOK IT BACK AND HE GOT IT RUNNING AGAIN. THE WEATHER HAS SINCE WARMED UP AND IT HASN'T DONE IT SINCE. THAT WAS A COUPLE MONTHS AGO. I FOUND OUT THAT TOYOTA WAS EXTENDING THE WARRANTY TO 10 YEARS AND 100,000 MILES. SO I TOOK IT TO FOSS TOYOTA IN CASPER, WY. THEY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T FIX IT UNLESS IT MALFUNCTIONED RIGHT THERE ON THEIR LOT. I CONTACTED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS BY E-MAIL, I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM AND WAS PHONED BY SOMEONE AT TOYOTA. THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING. I SAY BULLCOOKIES. THOSE ENGINE FAIL CODES ARE STILL IN THE COMPUTER. AND I BELIEVE THEY'RE STALLING UNTIL MY 10 YEARS ARE UP THIS COMING SEPTEMBER. THIS AIR PUMP REPAIR IS A $5,000.00 TO $6,000.00 BILL. BOTH EVENTS TRANSPIRED AS FOLLOWS: 1) APPLIED BRAKES IN PREPARATION OF STARTING ENGINE AND ENGAGING TRANSMISSION. 2) STARTED ENGINE, PUT IT IN "DRIVE" AND ENGINE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND JUMPED FORWARD. 3) I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED BRAKES WITH MAXIMUM EFFORT TO COUNTER THE ACCELERATION. 4) THREW SHIFTER INTO "NEUTRAL" WHILE ENGINE WAS MAXING RPMS, THEN I SHUT DOWN ENGINE. BOTH EVENTS WERE CLOSE CALLS. IF I HAD NOT HAD PRESENCE OF MIND I WOULD HAVE DESTROYED THE VEHICLE AND PROPERTY. I TRIED MANY TIMES, MAKING SURE THE VEHICLE WAS ON A LEVEL SURFACE, AT A COMPETE STOP WITH EMERGENCY BRAKE ENGAGED, SHIFTING FROM 2 WHEEL DRIVE TO 4 WHEEL HI AND THEN PLACE THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND TRIED TO SWITCH INTO 4 WHEEL LO....NOTHING, IT WILL NOT ENGAGE. IT WILL HOWEVER SHIFT BACK TO 4 WHEEL HI AND BACK TO 2 WHEEL DRIVE. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, I ONLY USE 4 WHEEL DRIVE HI, DURING SNOW STORMS IN NH AND ONLY USE 4 WHEEL LO TO DRIVE UP MY DRIVEWAY, IN VERY DEEP SNOW AMOUNTS (16"-20" DEPTHS). AFTER FINDING THIS VERY DISAPPOINTING PROBLEM, I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER. THEY HAD THE VEHICLE FOR THE DAY AND WAS ABLE TO REPLICATE THE SAME PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO THE TECH AND SERVICE MANGER, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE ACTUATOR HAS FAILED, THUS REQUIRING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSFER CASE, ACTUATOR AND A COMPUTER PROGRAM? ANY WAYS THIS WAS A TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN WHICH REFERRED THIS REMEDY FIX AND AT THE COST OF (DRUM ROLL PLEASE) $5,200.00 ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I'M AN EX AUTO MECHANIC AND PERFORM A MAJORITY OF MY SCHEDULED SERVICE AND GO TO TOYOTA FOR OTHER MAINTENANCE REPAIRS AND OR SERVICE, IN FACT MY ENTIRE FAMILY VEHICLE HISTORY CAN BE FOUND AT THIS DEALERSHIP PROVING OUR DUE DILIGENT VEHICLE UP KEEP AND LOYALTY. RECENTLY WHILE DRIVING MY 2007 TOYOTA TUNDRA, MY DRIVESHAFT FELL OUT OF THE SLIP YOKE AT THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK BEHIND THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER A SHUTTERING OF THE TRUCK I FINALLY STOPPED. LUCKILY, I WAS ONLY GOING 10 MPH AND THE DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO THE REQUIREMENT FOR MY DRIVE SHAFT TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS AN ITEM IDENTIFIED BY TOYOTA AS A PROBLEM, HOWEVER, MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SAFETY RECALL. I TUCK MY TUNDRA TO THE MECHANIC FOR CHECK A NOISE WHEN I'M DRIVING AN HE TOLD ME THE PROBLEM IS A REAR AXLE BEARINGS AND TOLD ME THE TOYOTA THEY BUILT THIS TRUCK WITH SMALL BEARING FOR THE SIZE OF THIS TRUCK , AND THEY TOYOTA ALREADY KNOWN. WHEN STOPPING FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT/STOP SIGN FROM 40-50MPH, THE TRUCK STOPS NORMALLY. AFTER ABOUT 1.5 SECONDS WHEN AT A COMPLETE STOP, THE TRUCK GIVES A KICK. IT IS SEVERE ENOUGH THAT IT FEELS AS IF YOU HAD BEEN REAR ENDED. THE WHOLE TRUCK SHUTTERS. I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO GIVES THE, "I CAN'T DUPLICATE IT" SPIELS. MY TRANNY FLUID WAS LOW DUE TO A LEAKING REAR SEAL SO THEY BLAMED IT ON THAT. THEY CHANGED THE ALUMINUM FRONT DRIVESHAFT AS THEY STATED IT CAUSED THE LEAK. PROBLEM NEVER WENT AWAY. DOES NOT HAPPEN AT ANY OTHER TIME. SUSPECT THE FIRST GEAR CLUTCH PACKS ARE RELEASING AND RE-ENGAGING. COULD BE MECHANICAL BUT IT IS ALSO A POSSIBLE PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION ECU. SIMILAR ISSUE WITH THE 2007-UP CAMRY WHICH WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE TORQUE CONVERTER. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIANS STATED THAT THE TWO PLASTIC COVER PIECES ATTACHED TO THE GEAR SHIFT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 63,000.

THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN MAINTAINED TO THE TEE, ALL MAINTENANCE DONE ON THE DOT! VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF. THE TRUCK IS WITH HIGH MILEAGE, 90,000. HOWEVER, WE WERE TOLD AT TIME SALE IT HAD A 100,000 MILE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY IN WHICH THERE WAS NO WORRY THERE BECAUSE IF MAINTAINED IT WOULD LAST FOR 300,000 PLUS MILES.NOW WE ARE TOLD THAT IS NOT SO IT WAS NOT 100,000 MILES, IT WAS ONLY 60,000. THIS CONDITION CAN BE REPLICATED ONLY WHEN THE TRUCK IS PLACED INTO PARK IMMEDIATELY AFTER HAVING THE ANTI SKID (TRACTION CONTROL) RESPOND TO A SLIPPERY CONDITION. THE PROBLEM DOES NOT OCCUR WHEN THE TRUCK IS PLACED INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE. THE PROBLEM ALSO DOES NOT OCCUR IF THE AUTOMATED ANTI SKID RESPONSE DOES NOT ACTIVATE ITSELF. AS I WAS STILL HALFWAY IN AND OUT OF THE TRUCK THE DOOR DRUG ME DOWN THE BOAT RAMP AND UNDER THE WATER WITH THE TRUCK. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GET FREE AND HAD NO SERIOUS INJURIES. THE TRUCK HOWEVER WAS FULLY SUBMERGED AND THE JETSKI TRAILER WAS BROKEN IN THE PROCESS. I HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA TUNDRA CREWMAX I FEEL A CLUNK IN THE TRANSMISSION OR REAR END A FEW SECONDS AFTER I COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. 2007 TOYOTA TUNDRA LONG BED 1. DRIVING DOWN A ROAD AND REAR TIRE BLOWS OUT. 2. THE YOKE OF THE DRIVE SHAFT BREAKS, SEPARATES FROM THE TRANSMISSION, EXITS THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE CUTTING UP THE REAR TIRE. 3. FRONT AND REAR PORTIONS OF THE SHAFTS REPLACED, GAS TANKS SHIELDS, REAR BUMPER, TRUCK BED BOTH SECTIONS OF THE DRIVE SHAFT WERE RECOVERED. THERE ARE MULTIPLE PICTURES AVAILABLE. AFTER PARKING THE TRUCK FOR ABOUT AN HOUR, I WENT BACK INTO THE TRUCK . AS I STARTED THE TRUCK THE 4-WHEEL LO LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASH WITH AN INDICATOR BEEP. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS THAT THE TRUCK WAS IN 2-WHEEL DRIVE AND NEVER ENGAGED IN ANY 4-WHEEL OPERATION. AT THE POINT OF THIS I TRIED TO PUT THE TRUCK IN REVERSE AND IT WAS NOT THERE IT WAS NEUTRAL, SO THEN I SHIFTED INTO DRIVE AND THAT WAS NEUTRAL ALSO, I REPEATED THIS 4 OR 5 TIMES IN DISBELIEF. AT THAT POINT I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND EXITED THE VEHICLE NOT REALIZING THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE NO PARK. I THEN WALKED ALONG SIDE THE TRUCK AND SO IT ROLL DOWN MY DRIVEWAY AND HIT THE GARAGE. THE TRUCK ONLY ROLLED ABOUT 20 FEET APPROX, BUT CAUSED ABOUT $5,000.00 IN DAMAGE BETWEEN THE 2. I PRECEDED TO THEN CALL HOFFMAN TOYOTA AND EXPLAIN. THE DEALER WAS ACCOMMODATING AT FIRST OFFERING A LOANER VEHICLE WHILE THEY RAN TESTS. ALONG THE WAY I WAS TALKING TO TOYOTA CORP ABOUT MY PROBLEM AND HAD A CASE MANAGER APPOINTED TO ME. TOYOTA CORP HAD SENT A FIELD TECH TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER REVIEW. HIS TEST ALSO SHOWED NO VEHICLE ERROR FOUND AND THAT NO RELATED CASES OF TRANSMISSIONS COMING OUT OF PARK. HE ALSO INDICATED THAT THIS WOULD ONLY BE POSSIBLE FROM OPERATOR ERROR. SO I NOW HAD TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY HOUSE GARAGE AND TRUCK REPAIR. AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE I HAD A FRIEND ASK ME IF I LOOKED INTO THE NTSB.GOV WEBSITE, AND I SAID NO, WE THEN PROCEEDED TO THE SITE AND IT TOOK APPROX. 10 SECONDS TO SEE A RELATED OCCURRENCE WITH A 2007 TUNDRA WITH 16,000 MILES AND HAPPENED TWICE TO THE INDIVIDUAL. I FEEL VERY UNCOMFORTABLE PARKING THIS TRUCK THINKING THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN, IT IS CLEAR THAT THERE IS SOME TYPE OF ELECTRONIC MALFUNCTION AND WHAT CAUSES THIS TO HAPPEN AT WILL IS UNCLEAR. *TR
