NHTSA Campaign: 17V657000

Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2005-2007 and 2009-2010 Toyota Sienna vehicles. In the affected vehicles, due to a problem within the shift lock assembly, the shift lever may be moved out of the 'Park' position without depressing the brake pedal.

Risk: If the shift lever can be moved from the "Park" position without depressing the brake pedal and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may roll, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid and reapply the grease, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is H0V. Vehicles that were previously recalled under campaign 13V-429 are not affected by this recall.

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Prius and Corolla, 2009-2011 Venza, 2006-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2005-2011 Sienna and Sequoia, 2006-2011 Tacoma 4x2 and 4x4, Camry, Highlander, Tundra 4x2 and 4x4, and 2007-2011 Rav4 and 4Runner. The affected vehicles may experience compression of the seat cushion which may damage the seat heater wiring.

Risk: Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.

Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the heaters with copper strand heating elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory, free of charge. The recall is expected to began in January 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2005-2011 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoia, and Sienna, 2005-2010 Avalon and Tundra, 2006-2008 Camry Solara, 2006-2010 Highlander hybrid, 2006-2011 Rav4 and Tacoma, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2007-2011 Camry hybrid, 2009-2010 Venza, 2010-2012 Prius, 1988-1990 and 2005-2010 Camry, and 1989 and 2009-2010 Corolla vehicles equipped with aftermarket accessory seat heaters with a copper strand heating element. The electrical wiring in the seat heaters may be damaged when the seat cushion is compressed.

Risk: If damaged, the copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the seat heaters, free of charge, and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory. The recall began on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET number for this recall is SET16B.

NHTSA Campaign: 14V273000

Component: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2004-2011 Sienna vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The affected vehicles have a spare tire carrier assembly mounted under the vehicle whose attachment cable may corrode due to high concentrations of road salt splashing onto the spare tire carrier.

Risk: If the carrier cable is corroded due to road salt, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota sent owners in August 2014 an interim notification to advise owners of the recall and that dealers will perform an interim remedy to remove the spare tire and relocate it to the luggage compartment, free of charge. Owners are being mailed a second letter as parts become available and dealers will replace the spare tire carrier assembly with an improved one, free of charge. The remedy campaign is being performed in phases. The first phase of the recall began July 7, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. NOTE: 2004-2010 Siennas subject to this recall were subject to recall campaign 10V-160 initiated in 2010. Those owners are advised that they must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign and that having the earlier recall completed did not remedy their vehicles. Additionally, model year 1998-2003 Siennas were recalled as part of safety recall 10V-160. Owners of those vehicles that have not had not the remedy performed on their vehicles, should contact their Toyota dealer to schedule a free repair.

Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2005 Sienna vehicles manufactured January 10, 2003, through August 10, 2005; and model year 2007-2009 Sienna vehicles manufactured February 20, 2007, through December 12, 2008. In the affected vehicles, due to a problem within the shift lock solenoid, there is a possibility that the shift lever could be moved out of Park position without depressing the brake pedal.

Risk: If the shift lever is moved out of the Park position without the brake applied, the transmission will either engage a drive gear or Neutral, increasing the risk of a backover or roll away crash.

Fix: Toyota will mail interim notifications to owners beginning in late October 2013. When parts are available, owners will be sent a second notice and dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

FireFiled: Jul 2024

Your engine compartment caught fire while you were driving, with smoke first visible in your rearview mirror at a red light. Your dashboard gauges and warning lights never alerted you to any problem before the fire started, and your brakes became less responsive as you tried to pull over. The fire caused significant damage to the front of the vehicle before the fire department extinguished it.

NHTSA #: 11605164
criticalUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Aug 2021

Your spare tire fell off the underside of your vehicle while driving slowly over a speed bump in a parking lot. You noticed rusty metal parts had also broken loose from under the car. This is a serious safety hazard—if it had happened on a highway or with another vehicle behind you, someone could have been injured or killed. The repair will likely involve replacing or repairing the spare tire mounting bracket and securing any damaged undercarriage components.

NHTSA #: 11428605
Service Brakes2 issues
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Jan 2023

Your rear brake lines are rusting due to snow and salt exposure, especially in areas with harsh winters. Over time, this rust can cause the brake lines to fail, which could leave you without braking ability. The fix typically involves replacing the rusted brake lines with new ones.

Filed: Aug 2021

Your car's ABS (anti-lock braking) system is not working properly. This system normally prevents your wheels from locking up during hard braking, but it may not be functioning as intended. Getting this repaired is important for your braking safety.

criticalAIR BAGS
CrashFiled: Nov 2020

Your Sienna was hit from behind at high speed while stopped at a stop sign, causing severe damage to the rear doors, bumper, and cargo area. Despite the force of the impact (the vehicle was pushed forward 8-10 feet), none of the airbags deployed, even though the cabin filled with white powder from the airbag systems. Your family sustained injuries from the collision, and the vehicle was totaled and required towing. The airbag system may need diagnostic testing to determine why it failed to activate during this high-impact rear-end collision.

NHTSA #: 11377200

Filed: Oct 2020

Your airbag warning light flashes on and off when you start the engine and continues flashing while driving. This means your airbags won't deploy in a frontal crash, which is a serious safety problem. Fixing this will likely require diagnostic testing of the airbag system and replacement of a faulty airbag control module or wiring component.

NHTSA #: 11364213
Electronic Stability Control (esc)2 issues
criticalELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
Filed: Oct 2020

Your Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) warning light and alarm activate unexpectedly while driving on winding roads or highways in dry conditions at speeds between 30-70 mph, and the engine won't accelerate, making you feel like you've lost control. This happens consistently every time you drive on these road types. Multiple repair shops have been unable to diagnose or fix the issue, and you've found many similar complaints from other Sienna owners online.

NHTSA #: 11365893
criticalELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
Filed: Aug 2020

While driving between 35-65 mph on dry or wet roads, your Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system triggers unexpectedly, causing warning lights and alarms to sound. When this happens, your steering wheel vibrates and the braking system pulses, reducing your control over the vehicle and slowing it down. The problem disappears on its own but returns under similar driving conditions, creating a safety concern on highways. Mechanics have only been able to reset the sensors temporarily, but the issue reappears after a short time.

Power Train,engine2 issues
criticalPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE
Filed: Sep 2020

Your 2007 Sienna stalled at a traffic light and you discovered the engine had no oil, which then leaked out immediately after refilling. A mechanic replaced an oil hose, but the engine began making abnormal knocking sounds and ultimately failed, requiring full replacement. After the engine was replaced, the transmission started shifting in and out of gear on its own while stopped, and jerking when accelerating in reverse. The transmission may need diagnostic service or replacement to resolve the shifting issues.

While driving on the freeway at 55 mph, your van started smoking from the rear with oil leaking out, and warning lights appeared on the dashboard. A mechanic found that the oil cooler hose had burst. After replacing it and driving 50 miles, the same hose burst again about 3 weeks later. You discovered this is a known recurring problem affecting many 2007 Siennas, and Toyota offers a special repair kit for it, though your van is now out of warranty coverage. The repair will likely involve replacing the oil cooler hose with an upgraded version or installing Toyota's specific repair kit designed to prevent this failure.

Suspension,vehicle Speed Control2 issues
highSUSPENSION,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Jan 2023

Your van's VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) or traction control light is coming on and triggering an alarm while simultaneously applying the brakes without your input. This happens randomly on dry pavement at speeds between 30-70 mph, whether driving uphill, downhill, or around curves. The sudden braking prevents you from accelerating, which creates a dangerous situation where you lose control of when your vehicle slows down.

Filed: Aug 2022

Your VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) warning light and traction control system are engaging randomly at normal driving speeds, even during gentle turns on the highway. This has been happening since around 110,000 miles, and while your suspension components and CV shafts have been rebuilt and inspected, the warning lights and VSC engagement continue without any stored diagnostic codes. The system appears to be malfunctioning and creating a safety concern by unexpectedly intervening in normal driving situations. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the VSC system's sensors or electronic control module to identify why it's triggering without a valid reason.

Filed: Aug 2021

Your engine's VVT-i oil line has a rubber section that's wearing out and leaking oil. Toyota has a campaign to replace this with a metal line, but your 2007 Sienna's VIN isn't showing up in the system. If the oil continues to leak, it could cause engine damage. You should contact Toyota to verify whether your vehicle qualifies for this replacement campaign.

When you accelerate, your engine makes a ticking or tracking noise that sounds like it could be from worn valve springs or rocker arms. You only hear the noise during acceleration, and it started after 60,000 miles. This appears to be a known issue with the engine used in Sienna models. The repair will likely involve inspecting and potentially replacing valve train components like springs, rocker arms, or related hardware.

Filed: Dec 2021

While driving your Sienna at 40 mph on a curvy road, the ABS warning light came on and your engine temporarily lost power for several seconds before recovering on its own. This problem happened intermittently, and when you took it to the dealer, they couldn't find a stored fault code to identify the issue. The problem occurred at around 160,000 miles.

Filed: Nov 2021

After purchasing new tires in July 2021, your TPMS warning light comes on repeatedly and all four tires are losing about 25% of their air pressure. You've returned to the tire shop multiple times for air refills, and even replaced the tire pressure sensor, but the problem continues. The tire shop may be suggesting additional purchases that won't actually solve the underlying issue with the tires themselves.

Your van's floor was modified by Braunability for wheelchair accessibility, which involved cutting out the original floor and welding in a new sub-floor. You've noticed severe rust developing on both the exterior underside and interior of this welded sub-floor, even though the rest of your well-maintained van shows no rust issues. The rust is spreading to the point where it's creating structural damage, and Braunability has refused to address the problem, citing the vehicle being out of warranty. Addressing this will likely require professional rust repair, potentially including metal reinforcement or replacement of the affected floor sections.
