INITIALLY, I WAS TOLD I COULD DRIVE THE CAR WITHOUT ANY DIFFICULTIES AND ONCE MY CAR /ACCOUNT WAS PULLED/VIEWED IN THE SYSTEM THEN I WAS TOLD TO BRING THE CAR IN IMMEDIATELY - WITHIN 30 MINUTES. NOW I AM BEING TOLD THAT FLUSH BRAKE SYSTEM - ALL, BOOSTER ASSY, CYLINDER SUB ASSY, MASTER CYLINDER SEAL,2 GASKETS WHICH IS NOW COSTING ME OVER $2,000. THIS APPEARS TO BE EXCEPTIONALLY COMMON. THE VSC TRAC, VSC OFF AND ABS AND PARKING BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON, THE BRAKES ARE DEGRADED AND THE FRONT END VIBRATES AS THE BRAKES APPEAR TO BE PULSING. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 10 TIMES OVER THE YEARS. AT FIRST WE THOUGHT IT WAS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND WE HAD THE TIGHTENED, SINCE IT SEEMED THAT THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING LOOSE AND IT WAS ENGAGING AS WE DROVE. THAT WASN'T IT, OBVIOUSLY AND IT CONTINUES TO OCCUR. WITH SUCH A HEAVY, LARGE CAR, WE HAVE NEARLY REAR-ENDED OTHERS, BUT GOT LUCKY. EACH TIME THE CAR PULLS TO ONE SIDE SHARPLY AND YOU HAVE TO STOP AND RESTART THE CAR TO GET ALL THE LIGHTS TO TURN OFF AND COME BACK TO NORMAL. I HAVE HAD THE BRAKES DONE AND REDONE SEVERAL TIMES AND THIS STILL OCCURS.. ON EACH OCCASION WE COULD GET OUT OF IT, BUT ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. TOYOTA HAS OBVIOUSLY IGNORED THIS..I HAVE DOWNLOAD THE COMPLAINTS AND THERE ARE >500 ON THIS VERY TOPIC. AS I READ THROUGH ALL THESE, THE SIMILARITY BETWEEN THEM IS BEYOND COINCIDENCE AND IT APPEARS THAT NOTHING ACTUALLY FIXES THIS. AS OF RIGHT NOW, I CANNOT LET MY FAMILY DRIVE THIS CAR. I AM BRINGING IT INTO TO THE DEALER (WITH COPIES OF ALL THESE COMPLAINTS) AND SEE WHAT COMES OF IT. MY HOPES ARE NOT HIGH. THE RECALL IN 2003 SEEMS LIKE THEY TRIED TO ADDRESS THIS (NOT CLEAR IF IT WAS SAME ISSUE). MY CONCERN REALLY IS THAT SOMEONE HAS TO GET KILLED. THE ISSUE WITH THAT LOGIC IS THAT DEAD PEOPLE DON'T FILL OUT COMPLAINTS AND IF THERE WAS A DEATH, IT APPEARS THAT THE ERROR/DIAGNOSTIC CODES DO NOT REGISTER AND GET SAVED FOR RETRIEVAL (FROM READING ALL THESE COMPLAINTS). SERIOUS CRASHES WOULD BE INVESTIGATED, CODES WOULD BE LOOKED AT AND NOTHING WOULD COME UP. CASE CLOSED. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN, TOYOTA, IF ALL ACCIDENTS GOT RE-INVESTIGATED? HOW MUCH WOULD THAT COST? 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 WITH 4WD WITH ABOUT 113,000 MILES. WE STARTED OUT ON OUR FIRST ROAD TRIP SATURDAY AND WERE HAVING NO ISSUES UNTIL WE STOPPED TO GET GAS AN HOUR AND A HALF INTO THE TRIP. AFTER GETTING GAS WE GOT BACK ON THE HIGHWAY. ONCE WE SPED UP TO ABOUT 70MPH THE VCS LIGHT STARTED BLINKING AND THE VEHICLE STARTED SLOWING DOWN ON ITS OWN FROM 70 TO ABOUT 45. WE WOULD TRY TO ACCELERATE THE CAR WITH THE GAS PEDDLE WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING, BUT IT DIDN'T HELP. ONCE THE SPEED DROPPED TO ABOUT 45 THE GAS PEDDLE WOULD RESPOND AND WE COULD SPEED BACK UP TO ABOUT 70 OR 80. THEN THE CYCLE WOULD START ALL OVER AGAIN. OVER THE COURSE OF A 13 HOUR ROAD TRIP THIS HAPPENED OFF AND ON ABOUT HALF OF THE TRIP. WHILE THE CAR SLOWS DOWN ON ITS OWN, PRESSING THE GAS PEDDLE EITHER DOESN'T DO ANYTHING OR AT TIMES IT JUST REVS THE RPM'S WITHOUT INCREASING SPEED. WE TRIED SEVERAL DIFFERENT THINGS TO GET THIS PROBLEM TO STOP. WE DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY TO TRY TO RESET THE COMPUTER BUT THAT DID NOT WORK. WE ALSO TRIED TO PUT IT INTO 4WD AND TAKE IT OUT AND IT SEEMED THAT SOMETIMES HELPED AND AT OTHER TIMES IT DIDN'T. SOMETIMES THE LIGHT WILL FLICKER AND DOESN'T SEEM TO REALLY AFFECT THE ACCELERATION AS MUCH. OTHER TIMES IT WILL REALLY ACT UP AND WE HAVE TO PUT ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS AND FINALLY GET OFF THE HIGHWAY TO TRY SOMETHING OUT OF DESPERATION. ALL OF THIS HAPPENS ON DRY, SMOOTH HIGHWAYS. IT HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE DAYS IN A ROW. IT ONLY SEEMS TO ACT UP WHEN WE ARE GOING ABOVE 55 OR 60 MPH. *TR

WHILE DECELERATING TOWARDS AN INTERSECTION THAT I HAD TO STOP AT VSC DASH INDICATOR LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT, & TRAC LIGHT ALL CAME ON. THEN, AS I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL I HEARD DEEP CRUNCHING NOISES FROM THE BRAKING SYSTEM (SOUNDED LIKE FRONT END). THERE WAS ALSO LOUD "CLANKING" NOISES, AS IF SOMETHING WAS BANGING AROUND THE INSIDE OF THE RIM OR BRAKE ROTOR. ALL THE NOISES WERE ALSO PHYSICALLY FELT ON MY BRAKING FOOT AT THE SAME TIME THEY SOUNDED. MY FOOT WAS BEING DROPPED AND PUSHED NOTICEABLY BY THE BRAKE PEDAL. I ALMOST REAR-ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME BECAUSE THE BRAKING POWER FROM FLUCTUATING INDEPENDENTLY FROM STRONG TO ALMOST NONE WITHIN A MATTER OF A FEW SECONDS. THE SAME DASH WARNING LIGHTS HAVE BEEN CONTINUING TO TURN ON FOR THE LAST 5 OR 6 WEEKS (SOMETIMES ALL OF THEM, SOMETIMES ONE AT A TIME), BUT THE PHYSICAL BRAKING ISSUE HAPPENED TO ME AGAIN TODAY 9-11-13. I WAS ON A BACK STREET SO I TRIED TO VIDEO IT WITH MY PHONE BUT COULDN'T GET THE CAMERA SET TO VIDEO IN TIME; AND IT STOPPED AFTER OCCURRING AT THREE DIFFERENT BRAKING ATTEMPTS. THE CAR FLUCTUATED ITS WAY TO A STOP WITH THE SAME CRUNCHING NOISES (NO CLANKING) THIS TIME. THE PRESSURE FULLY CHANGED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AS THE ISSUE TOOK PLACE AND I HAD LITTLE CONTROL OF EXACTLY WHEN BRAKING WOULD HAPPEN. HAVE YOU SEEN THE AMOUNT OF TIMES THIS IS HAPPENING? ARE YOU READING THESE THREADS? I'M CONCERNED TO TAKE MY KIDS IN THE CAR. I'M CONCERNED IN LETTING MY LESS EXPERIENCED 18 YEAR OLD DRIVE IT AS USUAL. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY WERE CLUELESS AND SAID THAT WAS PART IF THE WAY THE CAR KEPT ME SAFE ON WET ROADS. NEITHER INCIDENT OCCUR ON WET ROADS. CONTACTED AUTO SERVICE TECHNICIAN AND WAS TOLD AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED THAT ISSUE IS DUE TO A FAULTY COMPUTER SYSTEM WITH THE ABS SYSTEM HOW THE COMPUTER READS THE CAR PERFORMANCE. WAS TOLD THAT ONLY A TOYOTA DEALER WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE COMPUTER SYSTEM WHICH IS COSTLY. THE WARNING LIGHTS GO ON AND OFF RANDOMLY AS IF THE COMPUTER SYSTEM IS MALFUNCTIONING. *TR

VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, ABS LIGHTS HAVE BEEN COMING ON AND OFF SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN 2004. DEALER COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS OVER THE YEARS. LAST WEEK LIGHTS CAME ON AND STAYED ON FULL TIME. ABS SYSTEM SEVERELY SHOOK WHEN BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED. DEALERSHIP REPLACED MASTER CYLINDER AND BRAKE BOOSTER SYSTEM. COST WAS $1,200. WARNING LIGHTS STILL WERE PRESENT, AND THEY WERE RELUCTANT TO LET ME LEAVE THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE PROBLEM STILL PRESENT. THEY DECIDED THAT THE BOOSTER WAS AN "AFTER-MARKET" PRODUCT AND NOT PROPERLY COMMUNICATING WITH THE COMPUTER. DEALERSHIP WANTS ANOTHER $600 TO SWAP THE BRAKE BOOSTER, BUT STILL NO ASSURANCES THAT THE WARNING LIGHTS WILL NOT COME BACK ON. THIS HAS BEEN PROBLEMATIC SINCE THE DAY I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED ISSUE WITH THE SEQUOIAS AND TUNDRAS. *TR

THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS BEING DEPRESED AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MAUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 140,000.

YOU ARE LEFT WITHOUT POWER AND TRAFFIC IS ONCOMING AND YOU CAN'T MOVE OUT OF THE WAY, OR ACCELERATE FORWARD FOR 2 TO 3 SECONDS. REALLY IS DANGEROUS. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN IN 4WD. MANY PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS AND HAVE FOR YEARS, THUS, I HAVE LITTLE FAITH IN THE GOVERNMENT. THE VSC ON THE CAR SHUTS THE POWER OFF FOR REASONS OF ITS OWN. FILE A COMPLAINT TO NHTSA REGARDING VSC/TRACTION/ABS SKID CONTROL ECU FAILURE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I HAVE A '04 SEQUOIA. MY VSC ON OFF/VSC TRACTION LIGHT AND ENGINE CHECK CAME ON AS PER MANY OF THE REPORTS YOU FIND POSTED. AFTER TAKING IT TO THE DEALER THEY FOUND 4 CODES COMING UP SPECIFIC TO THE PROBLEM AND ADVISED THAT BANK 2 SENSOR 1 AND THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER AND THE ENGINE CONTROL COMPUTER (ECC) REQUIRED REPLACING. STILL THERE IS VIBRATION IN THE STEERING AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND SIMILAR PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN SEEN IN OTHER SEQUOIA ALSO. I WAS ON A TRIP TO NEW YORK AND ON THE WAY BACK THIS PROBLEM WAS SEEN. THE TRAC OFF, VSC TRAC AND ABS LIGHTS ON MY 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA CAME ON SIMULTANEOUSLY AND REMAINS ON. ON ONE OCCASION, MY VEHICLE LOST POWER WHILE I WAS DRIVING WHEN THE SYSTEM ENGAGED. I REPORTED THIS DIRECTLY TO TOYOTA SINCE THIS IS HAZARDOUS AND IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT OCCURRED WITH MANY OF THE 2003 SEQUOIAS WHICH RESULTED IN A RECALL BEING ISSUED. MY VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE TOYOTA PERSONNEL THAT I SPOKE WITH SAW THIS AS MY ISSUE AND NOT ONE OF TOYOTA AND ISSUED ME A REFERENCE NUMBER. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WOULD BE MY RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT WITH ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS FILED REGARDING THIS ISSUE THAT TOYOTA WILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY AND DO SOMETHING. THE VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY .THE VEHICLE WILL ALSO DRAMATICALLY DE-ACCELERATE. THERE IS ALSO A SMELL LIKE SMOKE. AFTER SHUTTING THE VEHICLE OFF AND LATER RESTARTING ALL WAS OK. TOYOTA IS VERY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. SUCH A PROBLEM OCCURRING ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER SPEEDS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF VEHICLE LEADING TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WITH POTENTIAL FOR NUMEROUS FATALITIES. TOYOTA HAD A RECALL FOR EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM ON IT"S 2003 MODEL, BUT NOTHING FOR THE 2004. CONSIDERING THEIR MOST RECENT PROBLEMS WITH ACCELERATION I CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE EXPECTED BY NOW THAT THE NHTSA WOULD HAVE INVESTIGATED AND MANDATED THAT TOYOTA CORRECT THIS PROBLEM BEFORE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT...NOT AFTER THE FACT. AGAIN, THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED FACT ON TOYOTAS OWN WEBSITE. NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN FILED TO NO AVAIL. THEIR REFUSAL TO RECALL AND RECTIFY THE SITUATION SHOULD BE A WAKE UP CALL TO THE NHTSA. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WHICH WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 60 MPH THERE WAS A POPPING NOISE IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE THEN MADE AN UNINTENDED 80 DEGREE LEFT TURN IN A SWIFT JERKING MOTION AND PROCEEDED TO HIT A CEMENT PIPE IN A DITCH. THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT TIRE WAS KNOCKED OFF THE VEHICLE. BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER WERE KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS AT THE TIME. THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER AWOKE AND THE CRASH WAS STILL OCCURRING. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO PICK UP SPEEDS; HOWEVER THE CONTACT DID NOT NOTICE THE EXACT SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS ON THREE WHEELS AND CONTINUED TO PROCEED. THE PASSENGER WAS KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS A SECOND TIME. THE PASSENGER AWOKE TO SOMEONE FLASHING LIGHT INTO THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A BROKEN TIBIA, SEVEN BROKEN RIBS, FRACTURED STERNUM AND A FRACTURED VERTEBRAE. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED A CONCUSSION, BRUISED FACE AND A SMALL LEFT HAND FRACTURE. BOTH WERE TAKEN TO A NEARBY HOSPITAL. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AT THE SCENE OF THE CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 84,199.

THERE IS A SECOND OR TWO WHERE THE ACCELERATOR FAILS TO PROVIDE ANY RESPONSE AND THEN IT RECOVERS. ONCE WHEN I WAS MAKING A TURN IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC I THOUGHT I THOUGHT I WOULD BE HIT BEFORE THE VEHICLE RECOVERED. I HAVE ASKED THE SERVICE PEOPLE ABOUT THIS TWICE BUT THEY SAY THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING IF THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE. HOWEVER, ONE SERVICE MAN SAID HE HAD HEARD OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER CUSTOMERS. THEY MENTION SOMETHING ABOUT A "FIREWIRE" THAT AFFECTS THE THROTTLE BUT WITH NO REMEDY IN SIGHT. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THIS RESULTS IN AN ACCIDENT FOR SOMEONE. *NM
