Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 530)
Structure →3 issues
Your 2001 Sequoia has severe rust damage throughout the frame from front to rear, which has already damaged brake lines, fuel lines, and power steering fluid lines. A technician noted the frame flakes apart when touched and warned against carrying passengers in the vehicle due to safety concerns. Fixing this will likely require replacing fuel lines ($1,700) and potentially the entire frame ($10,000), as continued rust will damage other undercar components.

Your dealer discovered that your Sequoia's sub frame is unstable and mentioned there was a recall for this issue, but that recall has expired. The dealer declined to perform a diagnostic test because of this structural concern. You'll need to contact Toyota directly to discuss repair options for the unstable sub frame, as the original recall is no longer active.

You noticed rust and corrosion covering the undercarriage of your 2001 Toyota Sequoia. Even after a dealer applied a rust-prevention coating as part of a manufacturer recall, the rusting continued and got worse. A second dealer inspected the vehicle and determined it was unsafe to drive due to the extent of the rust damage. Addressing this would likely involve professional undercarriage cleaning, rust removal, and reapplication of rust-prevention coating or sealant.

Your lower ball joint completely failed and separated, causing your wheel to fall off while driving. This damaged your front fender and jammed your front door shut. While you didn't crash, this was an extremely dangerous situation that could have caused a serious accident.

Steering,service Brakes →2 issues
Your ABS (anti-lock braking) system is activating unexpectedly while driving at moderate speeds, causing the car to brake suddenly without you pressing the brake pedal. You'll notice the VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) light coming on and blinking, along with a loud grinding sound. This is a safety concern because unexpected braking can startle you and your passengers.

Your vehicle's VSC TRAC system occasionally activates on its own while you're driving, which causes the brakes to engage and makes the steering harder to control. This can happen unexpectedly during normal driving. The issue may require diagnosis of the VSC TRAC system and its sensors to determine why it's triggering without warning.

Structure,service Brakes →1 issue
Your brake system is failing due to rust damage to the brake pipes, causing low brake fluid levels and triggering dashboard warning lights (VSC OFF, VSC TRAC, and Brake). A mechanic warned you not to drive the vehicle because rust has severely damaged both the brake system and the frame underneath. Fixing this will require replacing the corroded brake pipes and potentially extensive frame repair or replacement.

Steering,vehicle Speed Control,service Brakes →1 issue
Your brakes may suddenly engage on their own while driving at highway speeds, causing your vehicle to skid and veer to the right without you pressing the brake pedal. The VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) warning light and sound will activate, and your steering wheel may vibrate as the vehicle unexpectedly decelerates. This is dangerous because other drivers won't see your brake lights and may not realize you're stopping. The fix will likely involve inspecting and repairing or replacing the brake system and VSC components to prevent unintended brake activation.

Suspension,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your Sequoia's frame has rusted through severely, causing the rear stabilizer arm to detach and creating a clunking noise. You may also experience repeated failures of the front stabilizer links due to excessive frame flexing from the rust damage. The fix will likely require frame repair or welding, and potentially replacement of the stabilizer components.

Engine →1 issue
Your vehicle makes a cranking sound and jerks or shakes while driving at various speeds, and a warning light appears on your dashboard. The front wheel speed sensor was replaced, but the problem continued and got worse over time. This appears to be a known issue affecting similar vehicles. A proper diagnosis and repair from a Toyota dealer or qualified mechanic may be needed to identify the underlying cause.

You're experiencing frame issues with your 2001 Toyota Sequoia, though the complaint doesn't specify what the actual problem is. The complaint mentions electrical system and service brake components but doesn't detail what's wrong with them. Frame damage typically requires professional inspection and welding or straightening work.

Power Train,structure →1 issue
Your rear axle has severe rust that's causing differential fluid to leak out. The rust has also damaged other components, including the oil pressure sending unit, which triggered your check engine light. These problems were discovered shortly after you purchased the vehicle this year.

Tires →1 issue
The tread separated from one of your tires while driving on the freeway, causing it to fly off and damage your bumper and quarter panel. The impact also broke the rear latch and window mechanism you use to access the spare tire. You should have all your tires inspected immediately and consider replacing them if they show similar wear patterns.

Steering,wheels,service Brakes →1 issue
Your VSC, ABS, and brake warning lights came on while you were exiting the highway at normal speed, and your truck made a grinding noise and became harder to control. After pulling over, you found no visible problems underneath, and the lights cleared after restarting the vehicle. However, the lights return whenever the vehicle is cold, but disappear once it warms up and you restart it; no diagnostic codes appear on a scanner. The issue appears to be related to a sensor malfunction, possibly involving the brake system, ABS, or vehicle stability control, which may need diagnosis and replacement.

Service Brakes →1 issue
Your brake system is activating unexpectedly, causing your vehicle to swerve to the right and produce a grinding noise. This happens along with warning lights for your stability control and traction control systems. The brake system may need inspection and repair to address the unexpected activation.

Suspension,wheels →1 issue
Your Sequoia has a recalled suspension issue that affects how your tires wear and your vehicle handles on the road. Even after replacing struts, ball joints, and other suspension components, the problem persists—it may involve the steering rack and pinion as well. Driving with this unresolved suspension problem creates a safety risk for you and your family.
