Electrical Recalls (1)

RECALLCampaign #23V734000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2013-2018 RAV4 vehicles. Certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit properly in the battery tray, allowing the battery to move and contact the hold-down bracket, possibly causing a short circuit.

Fix: Dealers will replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed December 27, 2024, to 2013-2014 RAV4 owners. Additional owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, phase 2 will begin on May 14, 2025, and phase 3 in late July 2025. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 23TB13 and 23TA13.

Your car is subject to a recall due to a defective battery that could potentially cause an electrical short circuit and fire risk. As of August 2025, Toyota has been unable to complete the repair or battery replacement. You should continue attempting to schedule service with Toyota to address this safety issue.

Your battery is covered in corrosion and leaking acid into the battery tray, which can damage electrical components and create a safety hazard. Toyota has issued a recall for this issue (Campaign 23V734000) but may not cover battery replacement under warranty. The battery tray will likely need to be replaced along with the battery to fully resolve the problem.

Your 2018 RAV4 has an open recall for the battery, but when you took it to the Toyota dealer, they told you they would only fix the recall if you first purchased and installed a size 36 battery—even though your owner's manual specifies a size 35 battery and the recall notice doesn't mention this requirement. You've had to replace the battery three times since 2021 and have experienced other electrical problems, which you believe are related to this issue. The fix would involve either clarifying the recall coverage requirements with Toyota corporate or having the dealer perform the recall repair with the correct battery size for your vehicle.

Your 2018 RAV4 experienced a severed wiring harness that prevented the engine from starting, with no warning light to alert you beforehand. Your dealer was unable to complete the recall repair (Campaign 23V734000) because the necessary parts were unavailable. The vehicle remains unrepaired as of this report.

Your 2018 RAV4 lost electrical power while parked without any warning lights appearing. Even though the vehicle was repaired under a Toyota recall (Campaign 23V734000), the problem happened again after the repair. This occurred at 7,000 miles. The issue may require Toyota to diagnose why the recall repair didn't permanently resolve the electrical power loss.

You brought your 2018 RAV4 to a Toyota dealership on June 24, 2025 for a battery mount recall repair. The dealership scheduled the appointment but didn't have the battery mount part in stock, leaving the recall incomplete even after you spent over $900 on maintenance. Three months later, you still haven't received a call that the part is available, and you're questioning whether this delay meets recall repair requirements.

The vehicle's battery area caught fire. I was able to get out of the vehicle on time and call the fire department. Over 50% of the vehicle was consumed by the fire. Vehicle was my spouse's and she usually drives it alone with my [XXX] and she is [XXX]. Thankfully, I was driving it alone. NHTSA recall 23V734 came out on 11/2023 and they expected to have the fix by the end of 2024 but it never happened. The last vehicle maintenance by the dealer was in 02/15/2025. The vehicle has not been inspected yet but the insurance will make an appointment soon to do so. The preliminary findings of the fire department pinpointed the problem in the battery area. Prior to the fire, the vehicle shut down and the steering wheel locked. I turned it on and drove it out of the road and it did it again and when I came out of the vehicle, I saw smoke coming out of the hood and that's when I saw the fire. I received a safety recall from Toyota in January 2025. I called my Toyota dealership and they told me there was currently no remedy for the recall. I checked [XXX] and it confirmed that there has been a known recall since November 2023 on their 12 V battery and battery tray that could cause a fire. This hazard from the battery could not only affect myself, but others on the road if there were to be an accident. I am not impressed with the lack of remedy for a recall that has been known from Toyota since November 2023. My car has not yet been inspected, because there is nothing for them to address even if they do find a problem. There has not yet been a fire, but I am afraid to drive my vehicle that I paid off earlier this year. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

On Dec 5, 2024, our 2018 Toyota Rav 4 caught fire in our garage. We had turned on the car for a few minutes and then turned it off. Shortly thereafter smoke came out of the passenger side of the front wheel well and then flames. It just happened that we came back out into the garage and were able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. If we had not returned to the garage, our house would have caught on fire and perhaps with us in the house. Toyota shows no concern for us. Wouldn’t consider paying for a loaner car. Have told us it will be 40-60 days to perhaps tell us what happened. They did send an inspector to look at the car Dec 26 2024. He sent us some information that we do not understand.

My car caught on fire due to the battery shifting in February. I have all documentation of the process it took for Toyota to ever reach out just to tell me there was nothing they could do. I had to file a claim through insurance and pay some out of pocket for a fix. All for them to still have no remedy almost a year later. I can’t trade it in or else I’ll be under and have nearly 4-5k in negative equity since the car is now worth nothing due to the safety recall.

I have recently attempted to exchange my current vehicle for another. However, I have discovered through a thorough examination of the carfax report that there is a recall on this particular vehicle. Unfortunately, no solution has been provided for this issue. As a result, the value of my car has been significantly impacted and the offer I have been given is considerably lower than its true value. In an effort to address this matter, I have reached out to Toyota and was informed that they are unable to take any action on this vehicle at the present time. This car is regularly used by my wife to transport our daughter to school, thus its safety and reliability are of utmost importance. Consequently, I am in urgent need of replacing this vehicle with a suitable alternative.

No dashboard lights or gauges indicated any issues. Then I saw smoke coming from underneath the hood. I immediately pulled the car over to the shoulder and got out to look under the hood. Flames already visible and fire too hot to raise hood. Vehicle was completely engulfed in minutes. Vehicle had 65000 miles and regularly serviced at a certified Toyota dealership. Approximately mid May 2023, 5:15 PM +/_, while stopped at a red light while leaving the work parking structure, the engine revved up and wanted to move forward. Forcing the driver to apply heavy pressure on the brakes to avoid being forced into the intersection. An opening presented itself, the brakes were released and the car entered the intersection. Once moving forward the "unintended acceleration" stopped and the car performed as normal. There were no check engine, need service lights or indicators on the dash. With none of the above present we didn't expect a dealership to take our word of the incident. Then, on Oct 19th, app 5:30 PM the unintended acceleration happened again. While in town driving and stopped at a red light the engine revved up and the unintended acceleration was trying to force the car forward. Excessive pressure was needed on the brakes to hold the car in place and the transmission was put into park. Once in park the revving stopped. With a foot on the brake the car was put into drive and it performed normally. The driver was upset with a high level of anxiety of not knowing if or when it could happen again. The potential of hitting a pedestrian, another vehicle or being T-boned was very high in both incidents. An appointment was made at the dealership t next day and couldn't get it in until 10-31-23, 7:20 PM. Before taking it to the dealership we tried to replicate the unintended acceleration. After 8 miles and 30 minutes we were not successful. The dealership could not reproduce the event but acknowledged with documentation that this is a known problem. I am in possession of a Toyota Dealer UA Process Flow chart specific to these events. After the dealer went into the vehicle history they are saying there is nothing wrong with the car and the cause is driver error. The dealer can not give me a specific date of the event they claim was driver error. We have driven the car for almost 4 years, majority driven by one person with no incident.

My daughter and I were driving a Toyota RAV4 from 2018 just like any normal day, the car was working properly, no warnings lights were turned on. While taking a sharp right turn and passing an unevenness on the road the car lost complete power. My daughter couldn’t control the steering wheel of the car, it was stuck. As the car stopped completely, due to gravity, she tried to turn it back on but it didn’t work. A smoke started coming from the front left side of the car’s hood ( or the side of the driver) it was a white smoke. The car didn’t function in any way possible. We stayed inside the car and called roadside assistance. Meanwhile as the electronical gadgets started to turn back on (e.g. radio)the more smoke started coming out of the hood . We noticed that a red light with a car and lock symbol was flashing on top of the radio display monitor, later we learned it was the anti-theft system of the car. We got out of the car and noticed a the flames coming out of the car’s hood. My daughter tried to open the back doors and trunk of the car to save anything if possible, but they didn’t open. Many truckers tried to help us with using their extinguisher (severals) but unfortunately the front hood didn’t open ( was locked). The car ended up burning completely as we waited for firefighter to arrive. A police report was fill out 2023-6-13-6249.

I only had possession of the vehicle for less than 3 weeks and it seemed to be running without problems. Besides driving the car on the date I picked it up, this was only the fifth time I had driven the car. On April 17, 2023, I was driving the car to an appointment when it stalled while in motion. It did restart without any problem (though I did detect a faint odor that I thought might be a rubbery smell, but now believe was probably an electrical smell), and I drove it the remaining approximately half mile to the appointment. When I got out of the car, I noticed what I thought might be steam (thinking the problem may be the radiator) coming from under the hood. I now know this to have been smoke. I went in the building, signed in, and looked back to the car to see flames coming from under the hood. The fire department was called to put out the fire, and a fire marshal came to investigate the cause. The fire marshal told me that the fire initiated at the battery. I have requested a copy of the investigation report, which he told me will be forwarded to me when it is completed. The car has since been towed to LKQ Pick Your Part salvage yard. Two other cars parked next to me were also damaged by the fire. My safety was at risk as I now know that I was in the car when the incident initiated and the fire began. Others in the area could also have been injured as the fire accelerated. The car was parked in a school parking lot, so had the car exploded, there could have been many injuries. No warnings (lamps or otherwise) appeared. I have since done some research, and have found that spontaneous fires such as these have happened to many other Rav4s year models 2013-2018, most particularly 2018. This was a 2018.

UNKNOWN since insurance or fire department does not want to investigate. However car randomly caught on fire when driving. Could be due to a new battery installed a week prior. Driver and daughter claim as well an electrical issue with AC turning on by itself the morning of car fire which it has never done before. Driver suspects faulty battery since a new battery installed by dealer a week prior and the year before and it is not the first case late model RAV4s are caught on fire due to battery issues.

However, a Toyota Group 35 measures 6 7/8 inches wide across and after market batteries to the best of my research are 6 3/8 inches wide. The top battery hold down that fits over the top of the battery does not fit a 6 3/8 wide battery which appears to be the standard with the exception of Toyota. The top hold down bracket is too big and does not fit properly over the top of the battery. If that makes sense.

My car hit a row of small trees that formed a border between the parking lot and the street. The impact was so hard that there was over $5,000 in damage to the front of the car. I was in shock as it felt like the car was out of control. The second incident July 27, 2021. Again, I was turning right to reach the exit of a parking garage at a medical clinic. I was going very slow because I was approaching the ticket booth to exit the parking garage. Just as I completed the turn, the car accelerated and lurched forward toward the arm that keeps cars from exiting. I was able to stop the vehicle by pressing the brake hard, and I did not hit the arm at the exit point. Again, it was shocking and very frightening for this to happen.

NEXT DAY AFTER I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE, I BROUGHT THE SUV BACK TO THE DEALER (CENTENNIAL TOYOTA OF LAS VEGAS ) WITH PROBLEM ON THE GATE OPENER. DEALER REPLACED THE CONTROL MODULE IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR BUT THE PROBLEM DID NOT GET RESOLVED. BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND THE TECHNICIAN CAME WITH ME TO REPROGRAM THE CONTROL BUT CANT RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEED TO BUY A REMOTE CONTROL FOR THE GATE COMPATIBLE WITH THE SUV CONTROL SYSTEMS. WE HAVE TWO GATES WHICH MEANS T I HAVE TO BUY THE CONTROLS. I TRIED TO RETURN THE VEHICLE BUT THE NEXT DAY I FOUND THE VEHICLE IN MY DRIVE WAY, WITH A NOTE SAYING THE PROBLEM WAS ON THE GATE. STILL FURTHER MADE THE COMPLAIN TO THE MAIN TOYOTA MANUFACTURERS OFFICE TO NO AVAIL, STILL INSISTING THAT THE PROBLEM WAS IN THE GATE CONTROL. HOWEVER THE CONTROL BUTTON FOR THE GARAGE WORK PROPERLY. STILL THE PROBLEM IS UNRESOLVED AT THIS MOMENT.

AFTER PURCHASING OUR BRAND-NEW 2018 RAV4 FROM AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALER, WE WERE HEADING BACK HOME. ON OUR WAY, WE NOTICED BURNING SMELL FOLLOWED BY BLACK SMOKE FILLED FRONT SIDE OF THE CABIN. I QUICKLY MOVED MY CAR TO THE RIGHT SIDE PARKING LOT. WHILE CHANGING THE LANE I COULD NOT EVEN SEE THE RIGHT MIRROR BECAUSE OF THE BLACK SMOKE IN THE CABIN. AS SOON AS I PARKED THE CAR AND WE GOT OFF THE CAR, WITHIN A FEW SECONDS FLAMES FROM THE HOODS WERE NOTICED I CALLED EMERGENCY SERVICE (911) AND TO OUR DISBELIEF TO WATCH OUR NEW CAR BURNING IN FRONT OF US. IT WAS ONLY 15 MINS DRIVE FROM DEALER WHEN WE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED. IT TOOK ONLY 10 MINS TO SEE MY CAR WAS DESTROYED BY FLAMES. I COULD NOT GET ANYTHING OUT FROM FRONT OR BACK SEATS

WHILE DRIVING ON SATURDAY MORNING 9/29/18, I STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT AND MY 2018 TOYOTA RAV4 LOST ALL ENGINE POWER WHILE IN TRAFFIC. THE COMPUTER VIDEO SCREEN SHOWED THE MESSAGE "CHARGING SYSTEM FAILURE\MALFUNCTION". I THEN ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND IT DID NOT CRANK OVER, I WAITED A FEW SECONDS, MADE ANOTHER ATTEMPT , THE VEHICLE STARTED. I PULLED OVER AND PARKED THE VEHICLE, LOOKED UP THE ERROR MESSAGE IN THE CAR MANUAL AND IT INSTRUCTED ME THAT IT WAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND TO TAKE THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALER. I THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL DEALER, THEY RAN A VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC REPORT, THEY FOUND NO ERROR MESSAGES OR VOLTAGE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. THEY OFFERED NO REASON FOR THE LOSS OF VEHICLE POWER. THE SERVICE MANAGER STATED THAT THEY COULD ONLY DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE SO FAR AND THAT THEY WOULD NEED "CORPORATE" TO SEND SOMEONE OUT TO DO FURTHER DIAGNOSTICS ON THE BLACK BOX. ON 10/1/18, I OPENED A PROBLEM REPORT WITH TOYOTA USA AND WAS GIVEN A CASE#. .

MY RAV4 CAUGHT FIRE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WHILE PARKED ON THE STREET IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE. IT HAD BEEN PARKED FOR 12+ HOURS. AFTER BURNING FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES, IT EXPLODED WITH A FORCE SO GREAT THAT IT LIFTED THE CAR ONTO THE CURB, KNOCKED OVER A FIREFIGHTER, AND DAMAGED OUR BOAT PARKED 10 FEET ACROSS THE STREET. THE INSPECTOR FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DETERMINED THE INITIAL FIRE WAS FROM FAULTY ELECTRICAL WIRING BUT SAID HE HAD NEVER SEEN A CAR EXPLODE IN HIS 25 YEARS ON THE FORCE. TOYOTA CONDUCTED THEIR OWN INVESTIGATION AND AGREED IT WAS ELECTRICAL BUT COULD NOT DETERMINE FAULT DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THE DAMAGE

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED. I BOUGHT A RAV4 2018 IN FEBRUARY OF THIS YEAR, IT HAS ONLY 1,900 MILES AND IS ALREADY AT THE DEALER AFTER TAKING MY KIDS TO SCHOOL I WENT BACK HOME AND I USUALLY DO I ACTIVATE THE VEHICLE ALARM BUT IT DID NOT WORK. THE KEYS DOES NOT ACTIVATE OR DIS-ACTIVATE THE VEHICLE ALARM AND WHEN THE CAR IS ON THE TIRE PRESSURE SIGN STARTED TO BLINK. THE DEALER STAFF SAID THAT ONE OF THE COMPUTER IS NOT WORKING RIGHT. AT THIS MOMENT THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AND IRONICALLY IS NOT TIME FOR THE FIRST PAYMENT YET.

THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY IN A DRIVEWAY FOR APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS. AFTER PULLING AWAY FROM THE HOUSE, DASH PANEL INDICATORS WERE SHOWING MALFUNCTIONS ON BRAKE SYSTEMS, AWS, ETC. IT SHOWED THAT ALL COMPUTER SYSTEMS WERE MALFUNCTIONING. I DROVE IMMEDIATELY TO THE DEALER. INSPECTION SHOWED THAT THE WIRE HARNESS ON THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN CHEWED APART, OFF, AND INSULATION HAD BEEN REMOVED. I INVESTIGATED THE INTERNET ON THIS PROBLEM AND IT SEEMS THAT SEVERAL VEHICLE MAKES AND MODELS WERE AFFECTED. IT SEEMS THAT THE MANUFACTURES WERE USING A FOOD BASED INGREDIENT IN THE INSULATION OF THE WIRES, (SOY). THIS IS ATTRACTING RODENTS, (SQUIRRELS) TO THIS FOR FOOD. IT COULD HAPPEN ANYWHERE, PARKED AT THE POST OFFICE, GROCERY STORE, YOUR FRIENDS HOUSE, ETC. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 980 MILES. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS BEFORE. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE WIRES CATCH ON FIRE OR YOUR CAR STOPS ON THE FREEWAY BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. CAN THIS BE INVESTIGATED? AT THIS POINT, WHAT'S GOING TO KEEP THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. WE'VE HAD SEVERAL TOYOTA VEHICLES IN THE PAST AND DID NOT HAVE ANY WIRE HARNESS PROBLEMS.
