Owner Complaints (41)
While driving on a familiar route and approaching a turn, you pressed the brake pedal but your car accelerated instead of slowing down. You lost steering control and your brakes became unresponsive, and the vehicle only stopped after hitting a tree. Your airbags deployed from the impact, and your windshield cracked with all four tires damaged.

You received a recall notice in January 2024 about a potential fire risk related to your 12-volt battery, but replacement parts weren't available until March 2025 — over a year later. This is frustrating because you'd already had a similar battery recall fixed before, yet you received another notice about the same type of problem, leaving your car at risk during that long wait.

Water is leaking into your car's interior where the windshield meets the roof, coming in through the visor attachments, the overhead light, and along the windshield edges. This causes water to drip onto the windshield from the inside during rain, making it harder to see and distracting you while driving. The issue likely involves the windshield seal or the weatherstripping that should prevent water from entering at these connection points.

Your 2015 RAV4's white pearl paint (code 070) is chipping off, particularly after exposure to high-pressure car wash water. You discovered there was a recall on this paint issue that ended in November 2025, but you weren't aware of it in time and now have multiple paint chips across your car. Addressing this may require repainting affected areas or having Toyota assess whether the vehicle qualifies for warranty coverage under the recall.

While driving on the freeway, you heard a loud pop and discovered your sunroof had cracked with a hole in the middle. You weren't sure if the sound came from your car or a nearby vehicle until you pulled over and checked. The sunroof will likely need to be replaced or repaired by a technician.

paint is peeling off vehicle.
I had a 2015 rav4, I recently experience a horrific incident on 10/15/2023. I was driving on the freeway and the left lane was very bumpy. Then the dashboard started flickering so I pulled over. as I pulled over the car came to complete shutdown. So, my daughter and I got out of the car quickly. I called my insurance as the car didn't want start anymore, during this call I could see smoke. So, the agent had my call 911 and in seconds the car automatically went up in flames from bottom front to the top. Car was reported total loss. I saw the article on the rav4 recalls and believe this is related. [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
There is a known issue and current recall issued for roof rail water leakage in rav4 models 2019-2021. My current model rav4 from 2015 is now experiencing the same issue with water leaking during a rainstorm into the interior of the car through the visor junctions in both driver and passenger side. Please be advised as I believe this is caused by the roof rail junctions not being properly sealed. It is not only affecting 2019-2021 models but affecting older rav4 models such as mine from 2015. Hopefully the recall can be expanded to include older models as I am already currently experiencing water damage inside my car and this could be a major safety issue if unresolved.
Front collision in 55 miles per hour freeway after slamming on the brakes and hitting car in front with minimum damage to them, RAV4 started immediately to smell like something but burning and black smoke started on front left, after few moments car was on flames. The car burnt in it's totality.
Last year my battery exploded while I was driving the car. This year again the sane issue. I was driving my car this past Sunday September 10, 2023 and my battery exploded once again.
I own a White 2015 Rav4 Limited. I bought it used in 2019. I am emailing today due to the issue, like many other RAV4 and other white Toyota vehicles - the paint is peeling. A small piece started to peel at the end of last winter. It has peeled larger in the past month. In the past two weeks with high winds, two larger portions peeled off the front hood and drivers side rear door. This is a total of three different areas on the vehicle.
Nathing everything is my car working good
Yesterday, on 9/1/2022, my son parked the car on the parking lot of CVS in Tucson, AZ. He turned the car off and locked it and went into the store. While at CVS the car spontaneously burst into flames. More specifically the front of the car burst into flames. The car has been meticulously maintained and was in perfect mechanical condition. No one smokes. There was nothing flammable in the car. It just caught on fire out of the blue on its own while parked. Good thing no one got hurt and no other property damage occurred, but the car is totaled. It had about 88,000 miles on it. Thank god it was not inside the garage at night or our house would most likely have burned down as well. This is a VERY disturbing event. No one expects their well-maintained car to catch on fire while turned off and parked. We would like the incident investigated.
Transaxle Repair: reman transition with torque converter. The car begins to shake around 60MPH as well as acceleration gets stuck at times. The Toyota dealership looked at the vehicle 2 times before the cause was addressed.
The white paint on my vehicle is chipping like crazy. I was told by my insurance company that there was a problem with the white paint on Toyota vehicle from 2008-2019. This is very disheartening as I’ve always buy toyota vehicles for their excellence.
When my phone is connected to Bluetooth for hands free talking, the person I’m talking to says that they can’t hear me clearly, so much background noise. After looking this up I see several hundred people saying the same thing. It’s now a law that you can’t be talking on your cell phone to your ear, wouldn’t this be considered a safety issue? Thank you [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
On March 14, 2022 ( about 5:05pm)got in my car to drive to the post office to mail a package. ( less than one mile from my home) I noticed when I started the car that the computer appeared to be rebooting. It was grey and had a line at the bottom appearing to progress from left to right. I drove to post office, parked, turned off the car, locked it and went into post office. Waiting in line, a man came in and said whomever owns the silver RAV4 out front, your motor is smoking. I said that’s mine, went outside in shock, called 911 and the motor was in flames within minutes. I first noticed flames coming through crack in hood by the windsheild. I have no idea why this happened. Owned the car since 2018, never had a single issue. Car is totaled. Progressive Car insurance is investigating and will hopefully approve a fair settlement, minus my deductible. This is the most bizarre thing I”ve ever seen. Please advise if you know what I can do to at least get my deductible refunded from Toyota. Thank you By the way, I almost went to the gas station first, my tank was on E, it could have been a deadly situation had i done that first. Ps. I have a video of the fire that would not upload. If there is another way to get it to you, please let me know. Thank you.
Was driving along when some warning lights came on, specifically the check engine light, traction control off light and the AWD light. 2 seconds later I heard a loud pop, saw smoke coming from the hood. I pulled over and looked in the engine compartment and saw flames. I suspect the coolant line popped and caught fire. My safety could have been at risk if the battery exploded or oil/gas components were to catch fire. The car is currently at a dealer to be inspected. A NHP accident report was filled out and can be available if needed.
A. Mileage indicator: Full thank gives any where from 325-365 miles. But indicator goes down precipitously. If it indicates 20 miles, it will go down to 0 or 8 miles after only a 5 miles drive. B: The only safety I feel is put at risk is where it can leave me when my anticipated mileage suddenly goes below what was indicated. C: Have reported to dealer a couple of times but always informed nothing defective could be detected D: Never received any warning signals. Just happens.
ONGOING ISSUES WITH MY FUEL SYSTEM. CAR WILL DISPLAY ONE OF THESE MANY SYMPTOMS: -MISFIRE, HARD START, STALL OR SHUTOFF. OTHER SYMPTOMS INCLUDE CAR STUTTERING AND STALLING OUT WHILE DRIVING. THIS LAST SYMPTOM IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT OFTEN COMES WITH NO WARNING. WHEN THE CAR STALLS OUT, THE CAR IS DRIVING UP STRAIGHT UP A MEDIUM GRADE HILL. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT DATES AND TIMES ALONG W 24TH ST. AUSTIN, TX NEAR 1106 W 24TH ST. THIS WILL HAPPEN IF I'M EITHER STOPPING AT A LIGHT OR WHILE IN MOTION. I DON'T HAVE THE EXACT MPH I AM DRIVING, BUT IT WOULD BE AROUND 20 - 40 MPH WHEN THIS OCCURS. IVE TAKEN THE CARE TO BOTH ROUND ROCK TOYOTA AND CHRISTIAN AUTO BROTHERS TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. SO FAR, NEITHER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. ON 5/22/20, CHRISTIAN AUTO BROTHERS REPLACED THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION UNIT R&R, THE FUEL EVAPORATIVE CANISTER R&R, THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION PUMP, AND THE VAPOR CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID. THIS DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. CURRENT CODES: P0441, P0455, P1604, P1605, P0171. WHILE NO DIAGNOSTIC PROOF HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED, IT IS HYPOTHESIZED BY THE MECHANICS THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH EITHER THE FUEL PUMP OR THE FUEL LINE. AFTER READING ABOUT THE 2020 TOYOTA FUEL PUMP RECALL, I BELIEVE MY 2015 RAV4 HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING SIMILAR ISSUES. HOWEVER, IT IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. THEREFORE I AM SUBMITTING THIS INCIDENT INFO TO DOCUMENT THE CURRENT SITUATION. IF I LEARN MORE, I WILL TRY TO UPDATE.
MY CAR HAS 123,000 MILES I TAKE GREAT CARE OF IT I JUST HAD TO PUT A GEAR SHIFT ASSEMBLY IN TO THE TUNE OF 1100.00. MY TIRES WERE NOT RIDING WELL AND HE FOUND IT
REAR HATCH STRUT SEIZED AND BROKE CAUSING REAR HATCH DOOR TO NOT CLOSE COMPLETELY, REMOTE AND DOOR RELEASE IN CAR INOPERABLE. I HAD MY CAR SERVICED AND ADVISOR EXPLAINED THAT WATER (FROM WEATHER) CAUSED RUST AND LEFT STRUT BROKE. THE RIGHT STRUT IS CORRODED BADLY AND RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE AS WELL. TOTAL COST WOULD BE 1386.00 INCLUDED LEFT STRUT PART (427.00), RIGHT STRUT PART (739.00) AND ABOUT 200.00 IN LABOR. I CALLED TOYOTA CORPORATE FOR COMPLAINS AND THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS NO RECALLS AND THEIR WARRANTY WAS 3YR/3000 MILES WHICH DID NOT APPLY TO MY SITUATION. I CALLED MULTIPLE TOYOTA PARTS DEPTS, SOME OUT OF STATE TO COMPARE PRICES AND THEY REMAINED THE SAME. ONE PARTS EMPLOYEE INFORMED ME THAT THIS PART I NEEDED TO PROVIDE MY VIN NUMBER BECAUSE THESE STRUTS SUPPLY IS SPARSE AND THEY NEEDED TO SUPPLY LOCAL CUSTOMERS. I ASKED WHY THERE WASN'T A RECALL AND HE AGREED THAT THERE SHOULD BE ONE. AGREED THAT THE DESIGN IS POOR AND EXPECTATION TO LUBRICATE JOINTS TO PREVENT WATER DAMAGE ( WHICH WAS NOT IN ANY OF MY MAINTENANCE MANUELS.). I HAVE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WHEN I PURCHASED MY NEW RAV4 AND ADVISOR CALLED AND PRESENTED PICTURES, THE CLAIM WAS DENIED.
TWO DOORS (FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE DOORS) NO LONG LOCK AND UNLOCK USING THE KEY FOB OR THE AUTOMATIC BUTTONS ON THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. ACCORDING TO OUR MECHANIC, THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE (THE LOCK ACTUATOR) WITH TOYOTAS, ESPECIALLY SUVS AROUND 2015 LIKE RAV4S AND HIGHLANDERS. ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS, THE DOOR LOCK ITSELF GOT STUCK AND I HAD TO FIDDLE WITH IT SIMPLE TO OPEN THE DOOR MANUALLY. SURPRISED THIS HASN'T BEEN RECALLED SINCE IT HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR A SAFETY HAZARD. COST TO REPAIR EACH DOOR'S ACTUATOR (BY MECHANIC) IS OVER $500.
DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE WHEN THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION. WHEN WE WERE ABLE TO STOP, WE SAW THAT OUR SUNROOF HAD EXPLODED. WE WERE VERY LUCKY THAT THE SHADE WAS CLOSED ON THE WINDOW. THERE WAS NOTHING AROUND US (VEHICLES, BRIDGES, ETC) TO CAUSE DEBRIS TO HIT THE SUNROOF TO CAUSE THE INCIDENT. THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY SCARY THING THAT I HAVE FOUND OUT IS NOT UNCOMMON.
WE WERE SIMPLY PULLING OUT OF OUR SUBDIVISION AND THE SUNROOF EXPLODED. IT WAS AROUND 6PM AND THE TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 28 DEGREES F.
AIR CONDITIONING SMELLS LIKE MOLD OR MILDEW WHEN TURNING IT ON ALL THE TIME.
MYSELF, MY DAUGHTER AND MY DAUGHTER'S FATHER WERE TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND ON INTERSTATE 89 TOWARDS BURLINGTON, VT. WE HEARD AN EXTREMELY LOUD BANG. IT SOUNDED LIKE AN EXPLOSION OR A GUN SHOT. THE SUNROOF HAD EXPLODED, NOT FROM ANY DEBRIS OR ROCK'JUST EXPLODED. IT WAS A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE. LUCKILY WE ONLY GOT MINOR CUTS FROM THE GLASS. THIS HAPPENED ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. THANKFULLY I MAINTAINED CONTROL OF THE CAR DESPITE THE EXPLOSION AND PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR KILLED SOMEONE ELSE IN ANOTHER CAR. NOW I AM FINDING OUT HOW OFTEN THIS TYPE OF THING HAPPENS AND WHY IS NOTHING BEING DONE ABOUT THIS. SUNROOFS NEED TO BE RECALLED. IT IS HORRIFYING THAT THIS HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED. IN ALL HONESTY, THIS PROBABLY WON'T CHANGE UNTIL SOMEONE DIES AS A RESULT OF THIS.
I NOTICE WARM AIR COMING FROM THE AIR VENTS EVEN WHEN I DONT HAVE THE AIR ON. IT CONCERNS ME THAT IT MAY BE EXHAUST. I ALSO HAVE A 2014 COROLLA THAT DOES THE SAME THING. YOU CANT STAND THE WARM AIR ON SEMI WARM DAYS. YOU CAN FEEL THE WARM HAIR COME THROUGH VENTS WITHOUT THE FAN ON. ITS ON GOING.
SUNROOF EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH ON A ONE LANE COUNTRY ROAD - NO CAR WAS IN FRONT OF ME AT THE TIME. OCCURRED AT 11:00 AM AND OUTSIDE TEMPS WERE 43 DEGREES.
THE CAR STARTED ON FIRE AS I WAITED FOR A PARKING SPACE IN A PARKING LOT.
I WOULD LIKE YOU TO CONSIDER THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM AS A SAFETY DEVICE. TOYOTA SELLS VEHICLES WITH OUTDATED MAPS AND CHARGES OVER $200 FOR UPGRADES, WHICH DEALERS ARE RELUCTANT TO PROVIDE. I CONSIDER ACCURATE MAPS A SAFETY CONCERN AND I SUGGEST THAT MAP UPDATES SHOULD BE PROVIDED ON AT LEAST AN ANNUAL BASIS AT A NOMINAL (,$25) FEE. THE GARMIN POLICY WOULD BE A BENCHMARK. RIGHT NOW, MY GPS IS USELESS; CANNOT BE TRUSTED, AND MAY LEAD ME ASTRAY AS IT IS NOT CURRENT. TIS IS A SAFETY ITEM.
WHEN USING AIR CONDITIONING MOLD ACCUMULATES ON THE CONDENSER DUE TO WATER NOT DRYING OUT AND THAT MOLD/MILDEW IS THEN BLOWN THRU VENTS WHEN TURNING AIR CONDITIONING ON AND I AM INHALING TOXIC MOLD. TOYOTA IS AWARE THEY'VE HAD THOUSANDS OF INTERNET COMPLAINTS AND AT DEAL ON HVAC AND REFUSE TO CALL IT A DEFECT DESPITE THE HEALTH HAZARD EFFECT. APPARENTLY CAMRY HAS CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT STARTED RE: THIS. I FEAR FOR MY HEALTH WITH THIS AND OTHERS IN MY CAR SMELL THIS AS WELL. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE I PURCHASED CAR AND BCD AND FORTH TO DEALER.
UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHILE IN DRIVEWAY WHICH CAUSED MY CAR TO CAREEN INTO A WOOD SHED AND MY HUSBAND'S CAR IN THE DRIVEWAY.
SUNROOF EXPLODED. DRIVING DOWN PAVED HIGHWAY. 51 DEGREES OUTSIDE. GLASS SHATTERED. NO ROCK OR OTHER OBJECT FOUND INSIDE THE CAR. WASHINGTON STATE PATROL ON SCENE.
I HAVE A MILDEW/MOLD SMELL COMING FROM MY AIR VENTS IN THE CABIN EVERY TIME I TURN ON MY CAR AIR CONDITIONING UNIT. STARTED AT 4000 MILES. WENT TO THE DEALER TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE HOWEVER THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO FIX IT. I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS THIS PROBLEM. MANY AC MOLD/MILDEW ISSUES WERE FOUND IN MANY RAV4 FORUM. EXPOSURE TO SUCH SMELLS AND MOLD IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND CAN LEAD TO SICKNESS AND OTHER HEALTH RELATED ISSUES. TOYOTA HIT WITH CLASS ACTION WITH DEFECTIVE AC UNIT BEFORE.
MICE HAVE CHEWED THROUGH THE PLASTIC SCREEN OVER THE FRESH AIR INTAKE AND ENTERED MY RAV 4, SHREDDING EVERYTHING IN MY GLOVE BOX, SHREDDING THE CABIN AIR FILTER AND LEAVING FECES AND URINE THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE (SEATS, FLOOR BOARDS, CLOSED COMPARTMENT WHERE SPARE TIRE IS KEPT AND OTHER AREAS UNKNOWN/UNABLE TO SEE BY ME) DEALER WAS CONTACTED, RAV WAS TAKEN IN AND DEALER WAS INITIALLY GOING TO INSTALL A METAL SCREEN TO PREVENT REENTRY BY RODENTS-WAS QUOTED $185. UPON THE MECHANIC INSPECTION, WE WERE TOLD THAT "PER TOYOTA GUIDELINES" THEY COULD NOT/ WOULD NOT INSTALL A BARRIER TO PREVENT RODENTS FROM GETTING INTO THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AS MICE CARRY HANTAVIRUS AND BOTH MY HUSBAND AND I COULD HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO THIS TERRIBLE ILLNESS AS RODENT WASTE WAS MADE AIRBORNE WITHOUT OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE INFESTATION INTO THE VENTILATING SYSTEM. TOYOTA SHOULD MAKE THE FRESH AIR INTAKE IMPENETRABLE BY RODENTS. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE COMPUTER AND FIND THAT OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS DISGUSTING PROBLEM. SOME DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SCREEN AND OTHERS WILL NOT. THERE SHOULD BE SOME SORT OF SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE FOUR OTHER VEHICLES AND NONE OF THEM HAVE ANY RODENT INFESTATION.
THE ROOF RACK THAT CAME WITH THE RAV4 STATES THAT EACH STRUT CAN HOLD 100LBS, BUT IN THE MANUAL IT STATES THAT IT IS 100 LBS TOTAL. I PURCHASED SOME LUMBER AND MY ROOF RACK FAILED ON THE RETURN TRIP HOME. I BELIEVE IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. ONE SIDE OF EACH STRUT BROKE AND DENTED THE ROOF OF MY CAR. IF THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STRUTS FAILED THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN SOME DEVASTATION BEHIND ME AS LUMBER AND ROOF RACK PARTS WOULD HAVE FLOWN OFF BEHIND ME. I DO NOT KNOW THE EXACT WEIGHT OF THE LUMBER, BUT BASED ON THE QUANTITY I PURCHASED I CAN ASSUME IT WEIGHED AROUND 110-120 LBS. IF I KNEW THAT IT COULDN'T HANDLE 200LBS LIKE I WAS LED TO BELIEVE, I WOULD HAVE EASILY PUT ONE BOARD OR ALL OF THEM IN THE CAR INSTEAD OF THE ROOF RACK. I WOULD ALSO ASSUME THAT TOYOTA WOULD HAVE SOME SORT OF FACTOR OF SAFETY ON THE STRUTS. ALSO THE SIDE OF THE STRUTS THAT DIDN'T FAIL I ASSUME HAD AN INCREASED LOAD APPLIED TO THEM. THIS WOULD MAKE ME THINK THAT THERE COULD BE A PROBLEM IN THEIR MOLDING PROCESS AS WELL. THE PICTURE SHOWS THAT EACH ONE SAYS THAT IT CAN TAKE 100LBS EVENLY DISTRIBUTED. MY POINT IF MY TIRE SAYS 40PSI MAX THEN I DON'T FILL IT TO 10PSI BECAUSE THERE ARE 4 OF THEM. THE STRUTS ARE ALSO SEPARATE PIECES, WHAT IF I MIXED AND MATCHED OR ONLY HAD ONE ON THE CAR. ALSO THESE STRUTS ARE SOLD WITH THE RAV4 MODEL I GOT AND NOT PURCHASED AS AFTERMARKET OR AS AN ADD ON ITEM.
SUNROOF SPONTENOUSLY BUSTED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE.
AFTER GASSING UP IN A STATION (FULL TANK) AND THE GAS NOZZLE CLICKED TO A STOP, SOON AS EXTRACTING THE NOZZLE FROM THE RAV4, FUEL SPRAYS WITH A FORCE OF PRESSURE FROM THE GAS TANK TOWARDS THE PERSON HOLDING THE NOZZLE. AFTER THIS EVENT HAPPENED THE THIRD TIME, WE BROUGHT THE RAV4 BACK TO TOYOTA TO BE CHECKED. WAS RETURNED TO US THE NEXT DAY WITH AN OK RESULT. BUT THE NEXT 2 TO 5 WEEKS THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED, SO WE REQUESTED THAT A REPLACEMENT RAV4 BE GIVEN US - BUT TOYOTA REFUSED STATING THAT WITH THE WARRANTY, THEY WILL NOW PERFORM A RIGID TEST - THE RESULTS OF WHICH CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM OF GAS SPRAYS. WE JUST GOT BACK THE RAV4, AND TOYOTA SAID THEY REPLACED THE GAS TANK WITH A NEW ONE AND SAYING THAT THE OLD ONE HAD "A FACTORY DEFECT WHEREIN THE TANK FLAPPER WAS NOT CLOSING PROPERLY. I AM PUTTING THIS ON RECORD ON THIS REPORT, FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION OF NHTSA FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHER OWNERS.
