TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 SCION XD AND MY 2009-2010 COROLLA, AND COROLLA MATRIX VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 1.8L ENGINE AND ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALASKA, COLORADO, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, IOWA, KANSAS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MONTANA, NEBRASKA, NEVADA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, NORTH DAKOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WHEN DRIVING UNDER CERTAIN UNIQUE CONDITIONS IN EXTREMELY LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD SUCTION PORT FOR THE BRAKE VACUUM CAN BECOME BLOCKED DUE TO THE FREEZING OF CONDENSATION RESULTING FROM POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEWLY DESIGNED INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR WHICH WILL RELOCATE THE BRAKE SYSTEM VACUUM PORT. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

THE BREAK STOPPED WORKING. I HAD ALMOST GOTTEN INTO A CAR ACCIDENT. FORTUNATELY, I HIT A CLOSE DONATION METAL CONTAINER AND WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR. I HAVE MY CAR CHECKED OUT BY A MECHANIC AND THE ISSUE IS NOT RELATED TO BREAK PADS AND/OR ROTOR. IT IS A DUE TO A MANUFACTURING RELATED ISSUE; HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM. I HAVE STOPPED DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND I WOULD LIKE TO GET IT TOWED FOR A RECALL SERVICE TO DARCARS TOYOTA DEALER IN SILVER SPRING MD WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE WAS A MANUFACTURER CAMPAIGN TO ADDRESS THE FAILURE AND THAT THE REAR WHEEL BEARING HARNESSES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER ISSUED FOUR TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON THE BRAKE SYSTEM, BUT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED BY A DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS CAME ON. THE MECHANIC TELLS ME THAT BOTH REAR ABS SENSORS ARE BAD (CODES C0210 AND C0215). THIS IS A TOYOTA COROLLA 2009 LE WITH ONLY 81K MILES AND I HEAR THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS IN SOME FRIEND'S CARS. WE HAVE LOTS OF SNOW IN CLEVELAND AREA AND IT IS RIDICULOUS NOT TO HAVE ABS WORKING BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. LOOKING AT DISCUSSION GROUPS, THIS SOUNDS LIKE A RECALL TO ME. *TR
I WAS CROSSING THE BUMP ON THE ROAD AND AFTER THAT I LOST CONTROL. I HIT A MAIL BOX IN MY COMMUNITY AND I CRASHED IN MY ONE OF MY NEIGHBOR CAR IN THE LOT. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND SENT PICTURES AFTER THE INCIDENT. THEY DENIED MY CLAIM. I HAD TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING EVEN THOUGHT TOYOTA KNEW ABOUT THAT ACCELERATION PROBLEM. *TR
I WAS DRIVING BACK HOME AND SLOWED DOWN WITH THE INTENTION OF STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC INTERSECTION. MY BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE AT THE NORMAL LEVEL OF PRESSURE THAT I USE, AND I HAD TO PRESS IT ALL THE WAY DOWN. WHEN THE BRAKE WAS SLAMMED ALL THE WAY DOWN THE BRAKES DID ENGAGE, BUT THE ENGINE STARTED REVVING UP AND THE RPM METER WAS TO ITS MAXIMUM. I DID NOT TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKES BECAUSE I KNEW IF I DID, THE CAR WOULD HAVE TRAVELLED AT 120MPH. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED THE HANDBRAKE LEVER UP, CHANGED THE GEAR TO PARK, AND SWITCHED OFF THE IGNITION. I AM JUST HAPPY TO BE ALIVE TODAY, AND AM VERY THANKFUL FOR MY PRESENCE OF MIND. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND TOWED THE CAR TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. WE DID TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP A WEEK BACK TO DO A SOFTWARE UPGRADE AND A COUPLE OF OTHER RECALLS, AND THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION THAT I EXPERIENCED HAPPENED A WEEK AFTER THAT. TOYOTA AFTER THEIR INVESTIGATION CONCLUDED THAT THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR WERE ENGAGED AT THE SAME TIME. THEY ARE ESSENTIALLY SAYING THAT MY 5.5 SHOE SIZE FOOT WAS BOTH ON THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME. I DID LOOK AT MY FOOT TO MAKE SURE THAT IT WAS INDEED ON THE BRAKES WHEN THE CAR WAS REVVING UP. SO I CAN SAY WITH 100% CERTAINTY THAT MY FOOT WAS ONLY ON THE BRAKE AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS SLAMMED ALL THE WAY DOWN. LIKE IN PREVIOUS CASES E.G. OKLAHOMA COURT CASE, TOYOTA IS BLAMING THE DRIVER WHEN IN FACT, THE SOFTWARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THROTTLE CONTROL WAS CLEARLY SHOWN TO HAVE OVER 85000 BUGS BY EXPERT TESTIMONY GIVEN IN THE OKLAHOMA CASE. IF NOT FOR MY PRESENCE OF MIND, I WOULD CERTAINLY HAVE BEEN DEAD YESTERDAY, AND I AM STILL IN SHOCK AND AWE RECOVERING FROM THE INCIDENT. *TR
I WAS LEAVING THE DRIVE THRU TO PARK MY CAR AND WAIT FOR MY FOOD TO COME OUT. I MADE AN IMMEDIATE LEFT FOLLOWED BY AN IMMEDIATE LEFT TO PARK IN A HANDICAP SPOT. I PRESSED THE BRAKES AND MY CAR DIDN'T SLOW DOWN AT ALL. I KEPT PRESSING IT AND NOTHING HAPPENED. MY CAR WENT OVER THE CONCRETE BLOCK IN FRONT OF THE HANDICAP THRU BUSHES AND FINALLY STOPPED WHEN I HIT THE CORNER OF THE BUILDING I PULLED THE CAR INTO REVERSE AND PULLED THE E-BRAKE. THANKFULLY I WAS PULLING OFF SO I WAS GOING SLOW AND NO ONE WAS HIT AND I DIDN'T BREAK THROUGH THE GLASS BUT, I TURNED MY CAR OFF FOR ABOUT 20 MINS TO CLAM DOWN. WHEN I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON IT OPERATED AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. I DEALT WITH RECALLS WHEN THE CAR FIRST WAS OUT BUT, I DIDN'T SEE ANY RECENT ONES POP UP BUT, LOOKING THROUGH OTHER COMPLAINTS I SEE THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME EXPERIENCE. I CALLED UP TOYOTA SO MANY TIMES IN REGARDS TO MY BREAKS AND NOTHING EVER CAME OF IT EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY TOLD ME NOTHING WAS WRONG THEY DIDN'T FEEL OR HEAR ANYTHING OR SEE ANYTHING. CLEARLY SOMETHING IS WRONG SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR BUT, I REALLY DO NOT WANT TO PURCHASE A NEW CAR. ITS CRAZY TO BE HAVING ISSUES LIKE THIS. NOW I HAVE TO GET MY FRONT BUMPER FIXED. *TR
I WAS MERGING ONTO TRAFFIC HEADING WEST ON I-10 IN HOUSTON. THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME SUDDENLY STOPPED AND I STARTED APPLYING THE BRAKES HARD WHEN THERE WAS AT LEAST 10 FEET DISTANCE BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS MERGING AT PEAK TRAFFIC HOUR AND WAS NOT MORE THAN 40-45 MILES/HOUR SPEED. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES, THE CAR REFUSED TO STOP AND I HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I APPLIED THE BRAKES HARD SUCH THAT ANY OTHER CAR WOULD HAVE SKIDDED THE TYRES. THIS CAR JUST PLAIN REFUSED TO STOP AND I ENDED UP IN A WRECK WHICH CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO MY CAR AND NOW AM HAVING TO GO THROUGH INSURANCE. I HAVE DRIVEN OTHER SIMILAR CARS AND THEIR BRAKES ARE A LOT MORE EFFECTIVE. I AM CURRENTLY DRIVING A RENTAL CAR OF SIMILAR SIZE AND THEIR BRAKES ARE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS RELATED TO AN EARLY RECALL ABOUT BRAKES ON THE CAR, BUT I HAVE BEEN PROMPT ABOUT GETTING ALL MY RECALLS FIXED IN THE CAR. *TR
AFTER READING OTHER BRAKE COMPLAINTS I'M REALIZING THAT I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM SINCE I'VE HAD THE CAR. ANY BIT OF PRECIPITATION CAUSES THE BRAKES TO LOCK WHEN BARELY PRESSING THEM TO SLOW DOWN (NOT STOP). IT HAPPENS AT JUST A FEW MPH OR HIGHER. THEY LOCK TO THE POINT THAT THE CAR JERKS TO A STOP AT SLOW SPEEDS AND SLIDES SEVERAL CAR LENGTHS AT HIGHER SPEEDS. I HAVE LEARNED TO PUMP MY BRAKES BEFORE PLACING THE CAR IN DRIVE. *TR
FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED ON SAME DAY THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THIS WRITER NOTICED THAT WHEN COMING TO A STOP THE BRAKE WOULD OCCASIONALLY MAKE A GRINDING SOUND, BUT NOT THE SAME SOUND AS WORN BRAKES OR ROTORS; THE SOUND WAS AS IF IT STRUGGLED TO STOP SLIGHTLY. EVERY DAY FROM THE DATE OF PURCHASE IF THERE WAS EVEN A SLIGHT BIT OF PRECIPITATION, WHEN THIS WRITER WOULD PRESS DOWN THE BRAKE, THE BRAKE WOULD GO ON AND OFF VERY QUICKLY AS IF THE ABS WAS KICKING IN UNNECESSARILY. THIS OCCURRED AT ALL SPEEDS, RANGING FROM 5 MPH AND UP. FOR INSTANCE, ON ONE OCCASION, WHILE WRITER WAS DRIVING CAREFULLY IN THE SNOW AT 8 - 10 MPH WITH ONLY AN INCH ON THE GROUND, WRITER WAS BEHIND ANOTHER VEHICLE BY APPROXIMATELY 3 CAR LENGTHS AND COMING TO A STOP SIGN. WRITER BEGAN BRAKING AND THE BRAKES WENT ON AND OFF QUICKLY AND GRINDED A BIT. DUE TO THIS, THE VEHICLE SLID ALL THREE CAR LENGTHS AND WAS WITHIN AN INCH OF HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT. THIS WRITER LEARNED ABOUT THE RECALLS TODAY, AND IS CONTACTING DEALERSHIP TOMORROW TO SEE IF THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF THE ISSUE. *TR
SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING MY CAR ONE DAY THE ABS KICKED EVERY TIME I WOULD APPLY THE BRAKES. THERE WAS NO SNOW OR RAIN ON THE ROAD. IT FELT AS IF I WASN'T GOING TO STOP, WHICH IS VERY SCARY WITH A 4 MONTH OLD BABY AND 4 YEAR OLD IN THE CAR! I TOOK IT INTO THE SHOP RIGHT AWAY. THE SHOP LOOKED AT IT AND IMMEDIATELY CALLED TOYOTA TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL FILED YET ON THIS. HE SAW ANOTHER CAR THIS YEAR WITH EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM. HE SAID THE SENSORS HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED. HE FOUND CORROSION IN THE CONNECTIONS OF BOTH REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSORS. WHICH WOULD REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF BOTH WHEEL BEARING/SENSOR ASSY'S AND CONNECTORS TO GET THE SYSTEM FUNCTIONING AGAIN. MY REPAIR MAN SAID I COULD HAVE ENDED UP GOING RIGHT THROUGH A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. *TR
ON JAN. 6TH, WE HIT A DEER ABOUT 10 MILES FROM HOME, AND THROUGH OUR INSURANCE HAD THE CAR TAKEN TO A LOCAL BODY SHOP WHERE IT WAS FIXED. REPAIRS WERE MADE AND A FEW MONTHS LATER THE ABS & BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND WOULDN'T TURN OFF. WE CONTACTED THE INSURANCE AND THEY TOLD US TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE BODY SHOP, WHERE THEY WOULD SEND TO TOYOTA FOR REPAIRS. TOYOTA INFORMED US THAT THE ABS ACTUATOR WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. FOR INSURANCE PURPOSES, THE BODY SHOP ORDERED A USED LKQ ABS ACTUATOR. TWO PARTS WERE ORDERED, THE FIRST ONE BEING INCORRECT, AND WAS INSTALLED AND WE PICKED UP THE CAR. A FEW MONTHS LATER, TO AVOID BEING IN A CAR ACCIDENT, I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND NOTICED THE CAR PULLED HARSHLY TO THE LEFT. I THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT UNTIL MY SPOUSE HAD SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES TO AVOID A CAR PULLING OUT IN FRONT OF HER, THE CAR LOCKED UP, THEN STARTED TO SKID TO THE LEFT ALMOST CAUSING HER TO CRASH INTO THE VEHICLE SHE WAS TRYING TO AVOID. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO TOYOTA TO ASSESS THE PROBLEM, AGAIN, IT WAS THE ACTUATOR. ANOTHER LKQ USED ACTUATOR WAS PURCHASED AS PER OUR INSURANCE GMAC, AND IT WAS THE INCORRECT PART. THE CORRECT PART WAS ORDERED THE 2ND AND 3RD TIME, BUT BOTH WERE DAMAGED AND UNUSABLE. GMAC FINALLY ALLOWED THE BODY SHOP TO ORDER A NEW PART VIA TOYOTA. THIS IS THE 6TH ACTUATOR THAT WAS INSTALLED AND WE PICKED UP OUR CAR ON AUG. 30TH 2013. THE NEXT DAY, I DECIDED TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES TO TEST IF THEY WERE WORKING ACCORDINGLY, AND WAS SURPRISED TO DISCOVER THAT THEY PULL EXTREMELY HARD TO THE LEFT. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND REALLY HOPE THAT THE PROBLEM CAN BE CORRECTED. IF THE BODY SHOP AND TOYOTA HAD REALIZED THE EXTENT OF THE REPAIRS FROM THE BEGINNING, THE VEHICLE WOULD'VE BEEN CONSIDERED TOTALED, THE CAR IS WORTH APPROX. $10,000. THE TOTAL OF ALL REPAIRS DONE SO FAR TO-DATE SINCE THE ACCIDENT ARE APPROX. $9500. *JS

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE DRIVER DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE ERRONEOUSLY ACCELERATED THEN CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 43,000. UPDATED 04/03/13*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED SHE WAS TRAVELING EAST AT 25 MPH. AS SHE TURNED INTO HER CUL-DE-SAC THERE WERE TWO PARKED CARS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FACING EACH OTHER. SHE MOVED TO THE LEFT TO AVOID THEM . AS SHE APPLIED THE BRAKE TO REDUCE HER SPEED, AS SHE WAS NEAR HER TURN, THERE WAS A SUDDEN JERK IN THE STEERING WHEEL, QUICKLY PULLING THE VEHICLE TO THE RIGHT INTO THE LEFT REAR OF THE FIRST PARKED CAR. SHE HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE. IT THEN MOVED SLIGHTLY AWAY FROM THE FIRST VEHICLE AND THEN THE VEHICLE WENT IN THE DIRECTION OF THE SECOND CAR. THE CONSUMER THEN HIT THE OTHER VEHICLE. THE CONSUMERS RIGHT TIRE BLEW OUT AND THE RIM AND WHEEL WERE IN THE EXTREME RIGHT POSITION THAT APPEARED GREATER THAN THE WHEEL WOULD MOVE.
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT TURNED ON TOGETHER. THIS IS TURNING OUT TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WHICH IS DUE TO THE CORROSION OF THE SENSORS ON THE RARE WHEELS. WITH ABS LIGHT TURNED ON, THE VEHICLE IS INCAPABLE OF APPLYING ABS WHEN REQUIRED DURING BRAKE, CREATING A HIGH SAFETY CONCERN. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 84,000.
THE FRONT BRAKES PRODUCE A VERY LOUD RATTLING NOISE, WHENEVER THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED AND ITS ALMOST AS IF THE CAR IS NOT GOING TO STOP AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I AM AFRAID THE BRAKES ARE GOING TO COMPLETELY FAIL ONE DAY AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FOR A CHECKUP, THE DEALER INDICATED THAT TOYOTA IS INVESTIGATING THE NOISE, BUT IT MIGHT BE TOO LATE BEFORE THEY DO ANYTHING. PLEASE HELP BY INVESTIGATING THIS ISSUE. *TR
2009 TOYOTA COROLLA - JAPANESE BUILT ABS/BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS AT APPROXIMATELY 31,000 MILES. 1. DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER INDICATES TROUBLE CODES C0210 (SPEED SENSOR FAILURE) AND C1238 (PLUG TO RIGHT REAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY). PLUG TO ABS SENSOR AND TERMINAL REPAIR KIT WORK AT 32, 126 MILES. 2. 2ND DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER READING INDICATES "INACTIVITY WITH LEFT REAR ABS SENSOR". ABS/BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS AGAIN . IN ADDITION, LIGHTS ARE NOW ACCOMPANIED BY FREQUENT LOUD NOISES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, SIGNIFICANT VIBRATION THOUGH THE BRAKE PEDAL, MOMENTARY PARTIAL BRAKE FAILURE. 3. RETURN FOR 3RD INSPECTION OF BOTH LEFT/RIGHT REAR WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLIES. MECHANICS AGAIN REINSPECT, CLEAN AND APPLY ELECTRIC GREASE TO BOTH REAR ABS SENSORS AND ROAD TEST THE VEHICLE. SAME ISSUES REAPPEAR AFTER ONLY FEW MILES OF 3RD REPAIR. MECHANICS NOW DETERMINE THERE IS TOO MUCH CORROSION IN THE RIGHT REAR ABS SPEED SENSOR CONNECTION IN THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLY FOR THE ABS SPEED SENSOR PLUG TO CONNECT SECURELY AND THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY MUST BE REPLACED. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE PART AT $372-$443 RETAIL PLUS LABOR FOR EITHER JAPANESE/NORTH AMERICAN BUILT COROLLAS. THE ACCOMPANYING LOUD NOISE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE THE SEPARATE BUT ASSOCIATED ABS MODULE WITHIN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE DEFECTIVE ABS SPEED SENSOR/REAR WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLY IN THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL CAUSES INCORRECT READINGS BY THE ABS MODULE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, INCORRECTLY ASSUMING THERE IS WHEEL SLIPPAGE AT CERTAIN WHEELS AND "CAUSING THE ABS MODULE TO GO HAYWIRE" IN ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT WHAT IT THINKS IS WHEEL SLIPPAGE. I HAVE HAD THIS COROLLA FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS, AVERAGE ABOUT 700 MILES PER WEEK - DRIVE IT DAILY. I HAVE HAD NO SIGNIFICANT ISSUES WITH IT UNTIL THE PAST MONTH OR SO IN WHICH I HAVE EXPERIENCED TWO "SUDDEN ACCELERATION" EVENTS. IN BOTH CASES I WAS TRAVELING AT A VERY LOW SPEED, ABOUT 10 MPH OR SO IN PARKING LOTS. WHILE COASTING / BRAKING WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, SUDDENLY IT WAS AS IF THE BRAKE PEDAL TURNED INTO AN ACCELERATOR PEDAL! I FELT ALL OF THE BACK-PRESSURE THE BRAKE PEDAL NORMALLY HAS LEAVE AND IT WENT ALMOST COMPLETELY DOWN TO THE FLOOR. AT THE VERY SAME INSTANT THE ENGINE REVVED AND BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AND THE CAR "LEAPED" FORWARD. IN BOTH CASES THIS LASTED ONLY A FEW SECONDS THEN THINGS WENT BACK TO NORMAL. THERE WERE NO INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE PANEL WARNING OF ANYTHING WRONG. IN BOTH CASES MY FOOT WAS CLEARLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND NOWHERE NEAR THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. I VISUALLY INSPECTED THE FLOOR MAT AND THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO INTERFERENCE BETWEEN IT AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS CAR HAS ALREADY HAD ALL OF TOYOTA'S "RECALL" REMEDIES APPLIED TO IT AND COULD BE EASILY ASCERTAINED BY EXAMINING THE MAINTENANCE RECORDS AT BUTLER TOYOTA OF MACON, GEORGIA. I WOULD LIKE IT IF SOMEONE COULD EXAMINE THE CAR'S COMPUTER (NOT THE TOYOTA PEOPLE FOR OBVIOUS REASONS)TO SEE IF THESE EVENTS WERE RECORDED OR NOT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 55 MPH WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED BUT THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND AND THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED. THE FRONT TIRES RELEASED SMOKED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED AROUND SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE COMING TO A STOP IN A DIRT AREA. THE FRONT TIRES, ROTORS AND CABLES WERE DAMAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC AND LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE DEALER MODIFIED THE ACCELERATOR, REPLACED THE ROTORS AND THE CABLES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 124,000.
THE ACCIDENT WITH MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA I BELIEVE IS DUE TO BRAKE FAILURE. THIS VEHICLE HAS MANY FEATURE THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO REACT IN SITUATIONS OF MINOR ICE AND/OR SLIDING. THE SLIDING LIGHT, OR "VSC/TRAC INDICATOR" (PG. 158 OF OWNER'S MANUAL), COMES ON EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE SLIDES. EVEN WHEN THE CAR SLIDES SO SLIGHTLY THAT YOU CANNOT FEEL IT, THAT LIGHT WOULD COME ON TO WARN THE DRIVER OF THE POTENTIAL HAZARD, ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL "IF THE VEHICLE IS IN DANGER OF SLIPPING OR THE FRONT WHEELS SPIN, THE INDICATOR FLASHES TO INDICATE THAT THE VSC/TRAC HAVE BEEN ENGAGED. A BUZZER (INTERMITTENT) SOUNDS TO INDICATE THAT VSC IS OPERATING." THE CAR WAS ALSO EQUIPPED WITH ANTILOCK BRAKES. AS I WAS TRYING TO SLOW DOWN, I COULD INSTANTLY TELL MY BRAKES WERE NOT RESPONDING. I HIT THEM HARDER, STILL NO RESPONSE. I HAD BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKES PUSHING DOWN WITH ALL MY FORCE & STILL FELT AND HEARD NOTHING FROM THE CAR. USUALLY IN SUCH CASE, EVEN IF THE VEHICLE IS SLIPPING, THE DRIVER SHOULD HEAR A TRIPPING NOISE, THAT THE ANTILOCK BREAKS ARE RESPONDING OR AT LEAST ATTEMPTING TO. BUT NONE OF THAT HAPPENED. THE SLIDING LIGHT DID NOT TURN ON, THE CAR DID NOT REACT TO ME HITTING THE BRAKES OR EVEN SHOW ANY SIGNS OF STRUGGLING TO, & THE ANTILOCK BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE. ALSO, I JUST HAD 4 NEW MICHELIN HYDROEDGE TIRES INSTALLED JUST A FEW WEEKS PRIOR, (RANKED #1 BY CONSUMER REPORT), MAKING ME BELIEVE THAT THE BRAKES WERE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE. LASTLY, THE CAR HAS BEEN WELL-MAINTAINED SINCE IT WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED FROM THE DEALER, & ALL MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN DONE ONLY AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, INCLUDING A 27 POINT INSPECTION WITH EVERY OIL CHANGE, & ALL RECORDS OF SUCH ARE AVAILABLE. I WAS CURRENTLY ON 1 AND 9 NORTH OF JERSEY CITY NJ. I WAS ON A STOP LIGHT AND WHEN IT TURNED GREEN, THE CAR DID NOT ACCELERATE AS MUCH AS IT WAS SUPPOSE TO WHEN YOU PRESS ON GAS PEDAL. IT WAS LITERALLY MOVING 5 MILES PER HOUR. I WAS PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL FOR THE CAR TO GO BUT IT WAS STILL NOT EVEN MOVING UP. I TURNED ON THE HAZARDS AND PULLED OVER. THE SECOND PROBLEM OF THIS CAR IS WHEN YOU PRESS ON THE BRAKE, IT STILL MOVES A LITTLE BIT. WHEN YOU START GOING AND PRESSING ON THE GAS PEDAL, YOU HAVE TO PRESS ON IT HARDER FOR IT TO GO BUT IT GASES UP THAN IT NORMALLY DOES. I HAVE RECENTLY SAW THE PREVIOUS OWNERS RECEIPTS FOR ITS CAR SERVICE AND HE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. HE ALWAYS HAD TO FIX THE ACCELERATOR BUT UNTIL NOW, IT IS STILL THE SAME AND STILL NEEDS TO BE FIXED. I HAVE TWO RELATED CONCERNS ABOUT THE 2009 COROLLA S WITH TRACTION AND STABILITY CONTROL. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THERE IS AN UNRESOLVED SOFTWARE ISSUE WITH THE ABS / STABILITY SYSTEM. I NOTICED THE FIRST ISSUE AT ONLY 6000 MILES, RIGHT AFTER MY SECOND SERVICE AT THE TOYOTA DEALER. THEY PERFORMED THE BRAKE MANIFOLD RECALL RELATED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V338000 DURING THAT SERVICE. THE FRONT BRAKES BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY DURING BRAKING FROM 65 MPH. IT FELT LIKE THE ROTORS WERE SEVERELY WARPED WHEN THIS OCCURRED. THIS DOES NOT OCCUR EVERY TIME. THE TOYOTA DEALER EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY ISSUES AND WOULD NOT TEST THE VEHICLE ABOVE 55 MPH. EACH TIME I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR A SCHEDULED SERVICE, THE PROBLEM WOULD SUDDENLY GET WORSE AGAIN. THEY LIKE TO TIGHTEN THE REAR BRAKES EACH TIME. I ASKED THEM TO LEAVE THE REAR BRAKES ALONE AND DID NOT SEE THE NORMAL AGGRAVATION OF THE FRONT DISK PULSATION ISSUE. I DO STILL SEE SEVERE VIBRATION PERIODICALLY. THIS SYMPTOM APPEARS TO OCCUR MOST WHEN THE AMBIENT EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE IS LOWER THAN 2 DEGREES BELOW FREEZING AND ALL THE LIGHTS ARE FULLY LIT. DUE TO THE SPORADIC NATURE OF THE VIBRATION, MY CONCERN IS THAT THE ABS SYSTEM IS UNABLE TO KEEP UP OR THERE IS A VOLTAGE FLUCTUATION WITH ALL THE LIGHTS ON THAT TRIGGERS THE SYSTEM TO PULSE THE BRAKES INTENTIONALLY. I HAVE FOUND OTHERS ARE SEEING THE SAME TYPE OF ISSUE AND NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE A SIMILAR REQUEST ODI ID NUMBER: 10359202 FROM SOMEONE THAT HAS THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL WITH MANY IDENTICAL VIN NUMBER DIGITS. THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKES WERE INOPERABLE DURING THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION FAILURE AND BELIEVED THE BRAKES WERE ALSO DEFECTIVE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 16,000.

THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 12,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 36,000. THIS COMPLAINT IS BEING FILED ON BY ME AS A RESULT OF THE TERRIBLE SAFETY PROBLEMS I HAVE ENCOUNTERED SINCE PURCHASING MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA NEW FROM PERFORMANCE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN FAIRFIELD, OHIO. ON 3/27/2009 MY COROLLA SPED UP ON ITS OWN CAUSING ME TO STRIKE A PARKED VEHICLE, AND INJURING MYSELF. I CALLED THE WALTON, KENTUCKY PLANT ABOUT THIS THE FOLLOWING DAY. THEIR ADVISE TO ME WAS TO TAKE MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I HAD BOUGHT IT FOR AN INSPECTION. ON APRIL 1, 2009 I DID THIS VERY THING AND I WAS TOLD BY THEIR MECHANICS THAT EVERYTHING ON MY CAR WAS FINE AND THAT IT WAS PROBABLY JUST OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLES FAULT. LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP WORRIED, AND CONCERNED I PUT MY TOYOTA COROLLA IN THE BODY SHOP FOR REPAIRS. TEN DAYS LATER AFTER HAVING MY VEHICLE INSPECTED BY THEIR MECHANICS AND HAVING MY BODY REPAIRS MADE THE SAME THING OCCURRED TO ME AGAIN WHEN ON 4/11/2009 MY TOYOTA COROLLA ACCELERATED UPON ITS OWN AGAIN STRIKING A PARKED VEHICLE CAUSING ADDITIONAL INJURIES TO MYSELF AS WELL AS THIS TIME I WAS CITED BY THE POLICE, MY INSURANCE CARRIER RAISED MY RATES TO NEARLY DOUBLE THE USUAL AMOUNT, AND I AM PAYING FOR A CAR THAT I AM TERRIFIED AT THIS POINT TO BE DRIVING. WHEN I REQUESTED PRINT OUTS FROM THE DEALERSHIP OF THE MECHANICAL INSPECTION THAT WAS MADE BETWEEN AUTO ACCIDENTS THEY BECAME VERY AGITATED WITH ME, AND MY SON TO THE POINT OF COMPLETE RUDENESS. ON 22/4/2010 THEY MADE A CORRECTION ON MY TOYOTA COROLLA TO MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO FIX THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM, AND TOLD ME TO REMOVE MY DRIVERS SIDE FLOOR MAT THAT I WOULD BE RECEIVING A NEW ONE FOR SAFETY REASONS. I DID THIS BUT STILL AS OF YET HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY SUCH FLOOR MAT FOR MY CAR. ON 5/19/2010 MY SON AND I TOOK MY COROLLA IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION WHEN WE WERE TOLD OF A BRAKE RECALL THAT MY CAR NEEDED WHICH WOULD ONLY TAKE 40 MINUTES TO ACCOMPLISH. I TOLD THEM TO FIX IT PLEASE. I HAVE COMPLIED IN EVERY WAY. *TR
ON MARCH 8, 2010 I WAS DRIVING MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA, OF WHICH I AM THE FIRST OWNER. I WAS GOING ABOUT 35 MPH AND I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL TO ACCELERATE TO ABOUT 45 MPH. THEN I RELEASED THE GAS AND PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN, BUT KEPT GOING 45. AFTER A FEW SECONDS OF PRESSING HARD ON THE BRAKES, I PULLED THE HANDBRAKE AND SHIFTED THE CAR INTO PARK. THE CAR SLOWED DOWN AND EVENTUALLY STOPPED. I THEN CALLED A TOWING COMPANY AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP. THEY INSPECTED THE CAR AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT OCCURRED SINCE. *TR
I EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF THE BRAKES IN MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA S. I WAS PULLING OUT OF THE PARKING LOT AT WORK TODAY AND APPROACHING A BUSY ROAD TO TURN RIGHT ONTO. APPROACHING THE TURN AT ABOUT 5 MPH, I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL LIGHTLY TO GRADUALLY SLOW DOWN TO A STOP TO AVOID ENTERING THE ROAD INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. HOWEVER, WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUSHED, I HEARD A GRINDING NOISE AND THE CAR DID NOT DECELERATE AT ALL. IT MAY HAVE BEEN THE ABS ACTIVATING, DESPITE THE LOW SPEED AND LIGHT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. I TRIED APPLYING MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE, BUT THERE WAS STILL NO DECELERATION. ONLY WHEN I RELEASED THE BRAKES COMPLETELY (WHICH IS VERY HARD TO DO WHEN YOU'RE ABOUT TO DRIVE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC) AND REAPPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL DID THE BRAKES ENGAGE AND THE VEHICLE STOP. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES IN NEARLY 20,000 MILES OF DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE AND TO INCREASE THE SOUND OF THE RADIO LOUDER WHILE DRIVING TO AVOID THE GRINDING NOISE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35,800.
DRIVING NORTH BOUND ON I-90 IN LANE 2 FROM THE RIGHT SIDE, APPROACHING NEAR THE NORTH CUMBERLAND AVE OVER PASS AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, WHEN IT APPEARED THE AUTO IN FRONT WAS SLOWING DOWN I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THEY DID NOT ENGAGE OR SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN. WITH VEHICLE 1 RAPIDLY GAINING ON THE AUTO IN FRONT OF IT, I SWITCHED OVER TO LANE 1 QUICKLY TO AVOID STRIKING THE VEHICLE FROM BEHIND, WHEN THE BRAKES DID NOT STOP THE VEHICLE, THE SPEED CONTINUED TO INCREASE, WHEN IT APPEARED I WAS GOING TO HIT THE WALL TO THE RIGHT OF THE SAFETY LANE, I CUT BACK INTO LANE 1 AND THE CAR, NOW GOING AT AN UNCONTROLLABLE HIGHER RATE OF SPEED, MADE ALMOST A COMPLETE LEFT ACROSS ALL 3 LANES STRIKING VEHICLE 2 IN THE 3RD LANE ON THE RIGHT REAR DOOR, WHEN SPINNING OFF OF VEHICLE 2 THE LEFT REAR OF VEHICLE 1 STRUCK THE WALL MAKING THE VEHICLE COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. *TR
I HAVE NOTICED THAT MY BRAKES ON MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA S HAVE BEEN NOT AS RESPONSIVE AS I WOULD ASSUME OR WANT THEM TO BE. THIS IS ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE WHEN IT IS RAINY OR WET, OR EVEN DAMP OUTSIDE. I BEGAN TO NOTICE THAT WHEN IT WAS WET MY BRAKES SOUND LIKE THEY ARE GRINDING WHEN I STOP AND STOPPING DISTANCE IS SIGNIFICANTLY ELONGATED. FINALLY ON ONE RAINY DAY MY BRAKES FAILED AS I CRASHED INTO THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME. IN ANY USUAL CIRCUMSTANCE I WOULD HAVE HAD ENOUGH TIME TO COMPLETELY STOP, HOWEVER MY BRAKES COMPLETELY DEPRESSED TO THE GROUND AND FELT THAT THEY HARDLY SLOWED MY CAR, RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO MY CAR AND INJURY TO MYSELF. I HAVE BROUGHT MY COROLLA INTO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE BREAKS LOOKED AT AND THEY SAID THEY WERE COMPLETELY FINE, HOWEVER THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE CIRCUMSTANCE UNDER WHICH MY BRAKES FAILED, THEREFORE RESULTING IN THEM SAYING THERE WAS NO ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES. I HAVE HAD ALL OF THE RECALLS DONE ON MY CAR AND I STILL NOTICE THAT THE BRAKES ARE NOT FUNCTIONING AS THEY SHOULD. *TR

WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES (2009 TOYOTA COROLLA LE 38,000MILES) ON THE SNOW OR SLICK CONDITION ROAD THE WHEELS WOULD CONSTANTLY STOP/ROTATE AS SOON I WOULD PRESS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND PREVENTED ME FROM STOPPING UNTIL THE CAR SLID INTO A DRY SPOT, CURB, OR SNOW BANK. IT SEEMED AS IF THE BRAKES WERE OVER SENSITIVE CAUSING THE BRAKES TO IMMEDIATELY RESPOND WITH THE CONSTANT STOP/ROTATE. FOR A COUPLE OF SNOW FALLS (09/10 SEASON) I DEALT WITH THIS BY SLOWING DOWN AND USING THE BRAKES WAY BEFORE MY INTENDED STOPS. ON 1/7/10 AS I WAS COMING OVER A SLIGHT DECLINE I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE IN RESPONSE TO A VAN ABOUT 150 FEET IN FRONT OF ME AT A RED LIGHT WHICH CAUSED THE CAR REAR END TO WHIP AROUND TO THE FRONT ACROSS ONCOMING TRAFFIC LAND INTO A SNOW BANK. AT THAT POINT THE CAR WAS STUCK AND HAD TO BE PULLED OUT. ALTHOUGH THE TIRES STILL HAD SUFFICIENT TREAD ON THEM (NO BALDING) I REPLACED ALL THE TIRES. THAT STOPPED THE OVER SENSITIVE REACTION WITH THE BRAKES. *TR

THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER PERTAINING TO THE SERVICE BRAKES (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V338000, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM) AND TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALER FOR THE NECESSARY REPAIRS. THREE WEEKS LATER, WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 25 MPH THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKES DUE TO THE PRECEDING VEHICLE UTILIZING ITS BRAKES. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT DOWN INTO THE FLOOR BOARD AND WOULD NOT ENGAGE. HE THEN CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF THE PRECEDING VEHICLE CAUSING MODERATE DAMAGE TO THE PRECEDING VEHICLE, WHICH WAS A LARGER PICKUP TRUCK. THE POLICE ARRIVED TO THE SCENE AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO ANY OF THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND REFERRED HER TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, HOWEVER THEY WERE NOT RECEIVING ANY INCOMING CALLS. TO DATE, SHE WAS AWAITING A CALL BACK FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 15,000.
I STARTED UP MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA, THEN WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, I PUT THE CARS GEAR INTO REVERSE. THE CAR STARTED BACKING UP, ACCELERATING UNCONTROLLABLY. THE BRAKE WOULD NOT STOP THE CAR. I NEVER TOUCHED THE ACCELERATOR FROM THE TIME I STARTED THE CAR. THE CAR STOPPED WHEN IT RAN INTO ANOTHER PARKED VEHICLE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN BRADFORD, PA. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. HE SAID THAT I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE TOO HARD AND THAT DISABLES THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. THEY REFUSED TO LOOK AT THE CAR. THERE WERE NO FLOORMATS IN MY VEHICLE. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WILL NOT LOOK AT MY CAR BECAUSE THEY SAY THAT IT IS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL BECAUSE ITS VIN NUMBER BEGINS WITH A J, WHICH MEANS IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN JAPAN. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE IT BECAUSE I HAVE ALREADY HAD THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM ONCE AND CRASHED. *TR

MONTH: FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2010 WEATHER: DRY ROADS SPEED: LESS THAN 35MPH ON TWO OCCURRENCES, I TRIED TO BRAKE TO STOP MY CAR. THE BRAKES MADE A VERY LOUD GRINDING NOISE, AND THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN. I RELEASED THE BRAKE AND THEN PRESSED IT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, AT WHICH POINT THE CAR STOPPED. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SEEMED VERY UNCONCERNED ABOUT IT. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA IN JANUARY 2009. I THOUGHT THE BRAKES WERE A LITTLE SLUGGISH AND EXPRESSED THAT TO THE SALESMAN. HE SAID THEY WERE FINE SO I THOUGHT I JUST NEEDED TO GET USED TO THEM. I HAD NO OTHER PROBLEM IN 2009. IN JANUARY OF 2010, ON TWO OCCASIONS, I EXPERIENCED EPISODES IN WHICH THE BRAKES FAILED. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THEY WOULD HOLD AND THEN SLIP SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THE CAR CAME TO A STOP. ON AT LEAST ONE OF THESE OCCASIONS, I THOUGHT I HEARD THE ENGINE RACING WHILE THE BRAKES WERE BEING APPLIED. AFTER I HEARD ABOUT THE COROLLA RECALL, I TOOK MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I HAD PURCHASED IT AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS NOT SUBJECT TO THE RECALL. I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THIS BUT ASKED THEM TO KEEP THE CAR UNTIL THEY COULD FIND AND FIX THE CAUSE OF THE MALFUNCTION BECAUSE I CONSIDERED THE CAR TO BE A DEATH TRAP. THIS WAS IN FEBRUARY 2010 AND I REPORTED TO THEM EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE NOW REPORTED TO YOU. AFTER ABOUT TWO WEEKS THEY CALLED AND TOLD ME MY CAR WAS "ALL SET." WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR, THEY GAVE ME AN INVOICE WHICH SAID THEY HAD TAKEN IT FOR A COUPLE OF TEST DRIVES, CHECKED THE CODES, AND FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM DESPITE THE FACT THAT I HAD TOLD THEM IT WAS A BRAKE PROBLEM. ON 2/25/10, I APPLIED THE BRAKES AS I APPROACHED A RED LIGHT AND THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND. I DO NOT KNOW WHETHER THE CAR ACCELERATED BUT I DO KNOW THAT IT DID NOT SLOW DOWN. CONSEQUENTLY, I REAR-ENDED THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME AND MY VEHICLE WAS BADLY DAMAGED. *TR
MY CAR IS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA WHICH IS ON THE RECALL LIST. I HAD GONE TO THEM TWO DAY BEFORE THE ACTUAL RECALL, BECAUSE EACH TIME I WOULD ENCOUNTER A DOWN SLOPE OR GO DOWN A HILL, MY CAR WOULD SOUND LIKE IT WAS IDLING UP AND GRINDING AS IF IT WANTED TO TAKE OFF. IT HAD BEEN SERVICE A WEEK BEFORE THIS HAPPENED; HOWEVER, THE SOUND OF MY BRAKES SCARED ME SO I TOOK IT BACK IN TWICE. THEY STILL INSISTED NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT. THEN, I TOOK IT BACK THE NEXT DAY AFTER THE RECALL, AND I WAS TREATED VERY RUDELY BY THE SERVICE PEOPLE AS WELL AS THE SERVICE MANAGER. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE SINCE THEN. I DRIVE IT DAILY WITH A PRAYER, BECAUSE I WAS TOLD THAT IF MY VIN NUMBER BEGIN WITH A "J" IT IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. HOWEVER, I AM VERY AFRAID OR PARANOID ABOUT DRIVING IT DAILY AND ESPECIALLY ON RAINY DAYS. WHEN IT RAINS MY BRAKES SQUEAK AND SOUND AS IF THEY OR LETTING OUT AIR OR A BALLOON BEING RUBBED AGAINST YOUR HAND. I HAVE CALLED SEVERAL TIMES AND RECEIVED NO RESPONSE. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH UNIVERSAL TOYOTA UNTIL NOW. I WAS A FAITHFUL CUSTOMER WHO HAS HAD SIX TOYOTA CARS THAT I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED, BUT THIS SITUATION HAS CAUSE ME TO CONSIDER OTHER OPTIONS. COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE (14 MONTHS WORTH) AND ACCELERATION OVER 85-95 MPH (WITH COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE). I WAS INJURED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCELERATION INCIDENT AND THE BRAKES FAILED COMPLETELY. I'VE HAD TWO RECALLS DONE ON MY 209 COROLLA. THE ACCELERATOR AND THE BRAKES. I'VE NOTICED THAT MY GAS PEDAL MAKES THIS WHISTLE EVERY TIME I ACCELERATE. WHILE DRIVING OUR 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA ON A SLICK, SNOW-COVERED ROADWAY, A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF MY WIFE STOPPED RATHER QUICKLY. TWO DAYS LATER, IT SNOWED AGAIN, AND I WAS ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM ON OUR STREET. DRIVING AT A SPEED OF 20-25 MPH, I QUICKLY APPLIED THE BRAKES AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME RESISTANCE TO PRESSING OF THE BRAKES, THE SAME SLOW FIRING OF THE ANTI-LOCK SYSTEM, AND THE SAME FEELING OF COMPLETE DISENGAGEMENT OF THE BRAKES. THE CAR TOOK NEARLY 120 FEET TO STOP (THIS IS A VERY GROSS ESTIMATE BASED ON PROPERTY SIZES). AFTER THIS EXPERIENCE, WE TESTED THE BRAKES ON OUR TOYOTA RAV 4 ON THE SAME ROAD AND GOT SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER PERFORMANCE - THE VEHICLE STOPPED IN LESS THAN 60 FEET (AGAIN, GROSS ESTIMATE) AND DID NOT EXHIBIT THE RESISTANCE TO PRESSING OR THE SLOW FIRING OF THE ABS. UPON TAKING THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER, WE WERE INFORMED THAT EVERYTHING TESTED FINE AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AND NOTHING TO FIX. THE PROBLEM RECURRED AGAIN IN SIMILAR CONDITIONS TWO DAYS LATER. THE DEALER HAS OFFERED TO ALLOW US TO BRING THE CAR IN ON A DAY WHEN A REP FROM TOYOTA WILL BE PRESENT, BUT I FEEL THAT THEY DO NOT BELIEVE US, AND AM NOT OPTIMISTIC THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE. *TR

SHE ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY ACCELERATE ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS. IN DECEMBER 2009, THE DRIVER CRASHED INTO A BRICK WALL WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE DEALER TOOK PICTURES AND TOLD HER THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. FURTHERMORE, THE GEAR SHIFT BROKE AND THE DEALER DID NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE FOR SIX MONTHS. SHE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS UNABLE TO SPEAK WITH A REPRESENTATIVE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 17,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 1,000.

I ALMOST GOT KILLED AVOIDING OTHER CARS AT INTERSECTIONS. ONCE AGAIN, THE DEALERSHIP TRIED TO DUPLICATE THE SITUATION AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I TOLD THEM I AM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE AN UNSAFE CAR WHICH WILL END UP CRASHING AT SOME POINT FROM A FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM. THEY SAID THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING.
