ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2008 COROLLA AND COROLLA MATRIX VEHICLES. THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) FOR THE SUBJECT MODELS EQUIPPED WITH THE 1ZZ-FE ENGINE AND TWO-WHEEL DRIVE MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY MANUFACTURED. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT A CRACK MAY DEVELOP AT CERTAIN SOLDER POINTS OR ON VARISTORS ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE PRODUCTION NUMBER OF THE ECM AND REPLACE THE ECM IF NECESSARY. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. TOYOTA WILL MAIL AN INTERIM OWNER NOTIFICATION THE MIDDLE OF SEPTEMBER 2010 TO ADVISE OWNERS OF THIS DEFECT AND RECALL. THIS INTERIM NOTIFICATION WILL INFORM OWNERS THAT THEY WILL RECEIVE A FUTURE NOTIFICATION WHEN PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE TO HAVE THE FREE REMEDY PERFORMED ON THEIR VEHICLE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 29, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT, THE VEHICLE SHOOK VIOLENTLY AND STALLED. THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAITED A MINUTE AND WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SPARK PLUG FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.

WE GOT THE RECALL NOTICES FOR OUR TWO 2008 COROLLAS.. FOR THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V384000.. THEN WE GOT THE OTHER LETTER SAYING THAT WE CAN GO AND GET OUR CARS SERVICED. WE DID AND THERE THEY TOLD US THAT BOTH OUR CARS WERENT AFFECTED BY THE RECALL. YET WHILE WE WHERE WAITING TO BE CALLED UP ONE OF THE MECHANICS TOLD ME THAT BOTH OUR CARS NEEDED TO GET WHATEVER THEY WHERE GOING TO DO TO THEM DONE.. EVER SINCE THEN WE HAVE HAD OUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, FOR BOTH CARS.. WE HAVE SPENT A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY TRYING TO PASS SMOG CHECKS IN CALIFORNIA... ARE THERE ANY I DONT KNOW RECORDS OF WHAT CIRCUIT BOARDS HAD THAT PROBLEM? I WANT FOR MY MECHANIC TO CHECK IF INDEED THE BOARD WE HAVE ON OUR CARS WASNT A PART OF THE RECALL OR IF WE GOT SCREWED... DO THE BOARDS HAVE SERIAL NUMBERS AND IS IT KNOW WHAT SERIAL NUMBERS NEEDED THE RECALLS. THE TOYOTA PEOPLE DIDNT EVEN OPEN THE HOOD OF THE CAR... WE WAITED A COUPLE HOURS TO FINALLY GET CALLED UP AND THEN THEY HAD THE CAR TWO MINUTES AND TOLD US OUR CAR WAS GOOD. THOUGH IT WASNT, IT HAD ALL THE SYMPTOMS OF THE RECALL.. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ALSO WHAT IT IS THEY SAID ABOUT THE RECALL ON OUYR CARS.. DID THEY SAY THEY FIXED THEM OR WHAT. THAT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO ME.. NOW UNFORTUNATELY THE KEPT THE RECALL NOTICES.. I HAD TO REPLACE THE SERPENTINE BELT, BECAUSE IT WAS SQUEAKING (DRY AND CRACKED); I COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA ABOUT HAVING TO REPLACE IT AFTER SUCH A SHORT TIME BUT WAS TOLD BASICALLY THAT THEY DIDN'T CARE, SINCE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAVE HAD ONGOING - AND I THOUGHT UNRELATED - ISSUES WITH THE GEARS SLIPPING BUT COULDN'T IDENTIFY A CAUSE. IN JANUARY 2015, I HAD AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE GEARS SLIPPED. ON JULY 17, 2015, I HAD THE SERPENTINE BELT REPLACED FOR A SECOND TIME, BECAUSE IT WAS STARTING TO SQUEAK AGAIN. MUCH TO MY SURPRISE, THE NEW BELT, NOT MADE BY TOYOTA, SOLVED THE OTHER PROBLEMS I'VE HAD WITH SHIFTING (MY CAR IS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION). THE MECHANIC SAID THAT HE HAD HEARD COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS ABOUT HAVING TO REPLACE THE SERPENTINE BELT, A PART THAT SHOULD LAST APPROX. 100,000 MILES/10 YEARS, AFTER ONLY 3 YEARS. IT WAS HIS OPINION THAT THE BELT WAS DEFECTIVE. THE DIFFERENCE A NEW, NON-TOYOTA BELT HAS MADE TO MY CAR - UNEXPECTEDLY RESOLVING THE OTHER ISSUES I WAS HAVING - HAS CONVINCED ME THAT TOYOTA IS MAKING A DEFECTIVE AND DANGEROUS PRODUCT, ONE THAT THEY FAIL TO ACKNOWLEDGE.

WE CALLED TOYOTA WORLD OF NEWTON, NEW JERSEY AND BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN. THEY TESTED IT AND TOLD US EVERYTHING WAS OKAY INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE PART. TOTALLY DISGUSTED WITH THE BUSINESSES IN THIS COUNTY. THEY ARE LOOKING TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF US AT ANOTHER TIME. DURING DRIVING IN FREEWAY, THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME UP AND THEN SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE. DURING TRIPS TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THEY WERE UNABLE TO DISCOVER THE PROBLEM OR DUPLICATE IT IN FIRST OCCASION. HOWEVER AFTER RETURNING OF THE CAR AND INSISTING OF THE PROBLEM, WITH REPETITION OF THE PROBLEM, TOYOTA REPLACED THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESOLVED THROUGH PREVIOUS RECALL BUT IT MAY HAVE NOT BEEN FULLY ADDRESSED. THE ISSUE WAS POTENTIALLY ECM INTERNAL FUSE WAS SHUTTING DOWN THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE CAUSING THE CAR TO STOP. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS AFFECTS THE BRAKING DUE TO STOPPING THE CAR. AT ALL THE OCCASION THIS HAPPENED TO ME THE CAR SHUT DOWN AND CAME TO STOP. AFTER THE RESTART OF THE CAR, THE PROBLEM STAYS HIDDEN FOR A WHILE BUT COMES BACK AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. WHEN THEY ENTERED THE VIN NUMBER INTO THE COMPUTER, IT SHOWED THE ECM HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT WAS INCORRECT, AS HE HAD THE RECEIPTS AND RECALL NOTICE. THE CONSUMER WENT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP AND THEIR COMPUTER SYSTEM SHOWED THE SAME INFORMATION. IT WAS DISCOVERED THE FIRST DEALER, ENTERED THE INFORMATION INCORRECTLY. THE DEALER STATED THE ECM WAS COVERED BY TOYOTA. HOWEVER, THE PART HAD TO ORDERED. THE CONSUMER FINALLY RECEIVED A CALL, FROM THE DEALER, THAT THE PART HAD ARRIVED AND HAD BEEN REPLACED.

WHILE DRIVING, A STRAP ON THE FUEL TANK AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER HEAT SHIELD BOTH, SIMULTANEOUSLY, BECAME LOOSE AND BEGAN RATTLING TERRIBLY. I CONTINUED DRIVING THE CAR IN ORDER TO GET HOME, A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 200 MILES, WITH THE LOUD NOISE CONTINUING THROUGHOUT. I THOUGHT THE HEAT SHIELD WAS LOOSE, WHICH IT WAS, BUT I DID NOT REALIZE THE FUEL TANK STRAP HAD FAILED, OR I WOULD NOT HAVE CONTINUED DRIVING BECAUSE OF THE DANGER OF FIRE. IN FEBRUARY 2011 RECEIVED NOTICE FROM TOYOTA THAT DEFECT WITH ECM WAS CONFIRMED AND COULD CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE AND POSSIBLY SERIOUS INJURY FROM DRIVING VEHICLE CAUSED BY THE ECM FAILURE. OUR CAR WAS ALREADY SUFFERING THE EXACT SYSTEMS OF ECM FAILURE. IMMEDIATELY TOOK VEHICLE TO DON MCGILL TOYOTA LOCATED AT 21555 KATY, FREEWAY, KATY, TEXAS 77450. SPOKE WITH ASSISTANT SERVICE MANAGER, [XXX] OF DON MCGILL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. [XXX] INFORMED ME THAT DON MCGILL TOYOTA AND TOYOTA DID NOT HAVE A REPLACEMENT PART FOR THE DEFECT IN STOCK AND IT WOULD HAVE TO BE ORDERED FROM THE MANUFACTURER, TOYOTA. [XXX] ALSO STATED HE WOULD CALL ME TO SCHEDULE THE DEFECTIVE PART REPLACEMENT IN 3-5 BUSINESS DAYS UPON THE PART ARRIVAL FROM TOYOTA THE MANUFACTURER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN ILLUMINATING ON THE DASHBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN DIRECTLY TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER BECAUSE PRIOR TO BEING REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL THE VEHICLE WOULD STALL MOMENTS AFTER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN ILLUMINATING. THE ECM WAS REPLACED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 50,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60-65 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED. THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE ACCELERATOR WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO DECELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED THREE ADDITIONAL TIMES. THE SECOND TIME THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE ECM. THE THIRD AND FOURTH FAILURES, THE ECM WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER. DECEMBER 2010, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE DEALER REPLACED A PART TO THE COMPUTER. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, FILED A COMPLAINT AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN RECALL 10V384000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 53,000.

THE CONTACT STATED AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE REPAIRED FOR THE ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING (10V384000) FOUR MONTHS LATER THE VEHICLE IS STALLING AND SHUT OFF WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE STALLING CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO THE REAR OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. NO ONE WAS INJURED BUT THE VEHICLE SUFFERED DAMAGES TO THE FRONT END. THE CONTACT HAS TAKEN THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE DEALER IS WAITING FOR THE MANUFACTURER TO GIVE THE "OK" TO REPLACE THE ECM AGAIN. THE CONTACT CAN NOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE STALLING. THE CONTACT STATED THE STALLING IS VERY SPORADIC. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, I NOTICED A CLICKING SOUND RESULTING FROM THE NEEDLE ON THE RPM METER DROPPING TO 0. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON, AND MY ENGINE STALLED. I LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKING, AND COASTED ON MOMENTUM TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF A FEW SECONDS LATER. I HAD THE CAR TOWED HOME.

THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WAS IN THE PROCESS OF REDESIGNING THE DEFECTIVE SHIELD THEREFORE, AS A TEMPORARY REPAIR, THE DEALER WIRED THE DEFECTIVE SHIELD UNTIL THE NEWLY DESIGNED PART BECAME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PART WAS STILL NOT AVAILABLE AFTER ONE MONTH. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 33, 600.

MONDAY, AUGUST 23, 2010, WHILE DRIVING ON A MAIN HIGHWAY WITH A HILL MY CAR STALLED. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS THE ONLY THING SHOWING IN MY DASH. I PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR; THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO SLOW DOWN AND I WAS FRIGHTENED THAT SOMEONE WOULD REAR END ME OR THAT MY CAR WOULD START ROLLING BACK DOWN THE HILL. THANK GOD NO ONE WAS TRAVELING AT THE LEGAL SPEED OF 65 MPH WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I TURNED MY VEHICLE BACK IN THE DIRECTION THAT I CAME FROM TO HAVE MY HUSBAND HELP ME LOOK FOR WHY THIS HAPPENED. HE SAID MOST LIKELY IT WAS THE BATTERY AND REPLACED IT THAT EVENING. TUESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2010, LATE EVENING I PARKED MY CAR IN A POTEAU OKLAHOMA SHOPPING CENTER FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AFTER DRIVING SOME TWENTY PLUS MILES. I RETURNED TO MY CAR; IT APPEARED TO START OK; HOWEVER, WHEN I SHIFTED TO DRIVE IT SHIFTED HARD AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN LURCHING FORWARD. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD COME BACK ON. I SHIFTED TOWARD PARK AND NOTICED THAT WHEN IT REACHED THE REVERSE ON GEAR SHIFT CONSOLE THE HARD SHIFT LESSENED BUT IN PARK NO HARSHNESS OR LURCHING. I PHONED MY HUSBAND THAT IT HAD HAPPENED AGAIN AND HE CAME WITH THE CAR HAULER AND HAULED MY VEHICLE HOME. I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA COROLLA. ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP THE ENGINE ACCELERATED. I IMMEDIATELY PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE RPM INCREASED TO 6000RPM. AFTER THE FIRST OCCURRENCE I REMOVED THE FLOOR MATS AT TOYOTA'S REQUEST EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE NO WHERE NEAR THE ACCELERATOR AND THE CONDITION RE-OCCURRED. BOTH THE LOCAL AND REGIONAL TOYOTA REP CHECKED THE CAR AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG. I PUT THE FLOOR MATS BACK - AGAIN NO WHERE NEAR THE ACCELERATOR AND ON 2 JULY THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OCCURRED AGAIN WHEN I WAS ON A TRIP. WHEN I RETURNED I BROUGHT THE CAR TO MY LOCAL DEALER THEY CHECKED THE CAR AND FOUND NOTHING. THE REGIONAL TOYOTA REP WOULD NOT COME TO INSPECT IT BECAUSE THE FLOOR MATS WERE IN PLACE - BUT AGAIN THEY ARE NO WHERE NEAR THE ACCELERATOR. I WAS TOLD TO BRING IT IN IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN AND TO REMOVE THE FLOOR MATS. MY WIFE AND MOTHER IN LAW WERE IN THE CAR DURING THE LAST INCIDENT AND THEY WERE VERY FRIGHTENED. MY WIFE WILL NO LONGER DRIVE THE CAR. I DO NOT FEEL THAT THE CAR IS SAFE BUT HAVE NO CHOICE SINCE I CANNOT AFFORD ANOTHER CAR. SHORTLY AFTER, ENGINE STARTED STALLING; FIRST TIME JUST FELL LIKE ENGINE WAS BEING SLUGGISH AND NEEDED TO GIVE MORE GAS TO GET POWER; SECOND TIME, CAR NEARLY FELL STILL (DOWN TO A COUPLE OF MPH'S), EVEN WHEN APPLYING SERIOUS GAS (AND CLEARLY HITTING HIGH RPM & ENGINE ROARING LOUDLY). JUST MANAGED TO PULL THE CAR ASIDE. WHEN TOWTRUCK ARRIVED 30 MINUTES LATER, PROBLEM HAD DISAPPEARED... (FOR NOW). A QUICK CHECK ON GOOGLE SOUNDS LIKE THIS MAY BE DUE TO MANY CAUSES, FROM SIMPLE AIR INTAKE SENSOR, TO MORE SERIOUS ECM PROBLEMS. INFORMED BY DEALER THAT PROBLEM WAS DEFECTIVE ENGINE COMPUTER (FP NO 89661-02R00) AND THAT COROLLAS IN MODEL YEARS 2004-07 COMMONLY HAD PROBLEM. HOWEVER, NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED BY COMPANY THOUGH IT HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE PART. COMPUTER REPLACED WITHOUT CHARGE. MY SON HAS A 2007 COROLLA. ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO, HE NOTICED HIS AIR CONDITIONING WAS NOT COOLING. HE TOO IT TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO BE FIXED SINCE HE ONLY HAS 17,000 MILES ON THE CAR. THEY REFUSED TO FIX THE CONDENSER. THEY ARE TRYING TO SAY IT IS A ROAD HAZARD AND HIS FAULT. TOYOTA HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE 2005 AND 2006 COROLLA. NOW IT HAS HAPPENED WITH THE 2007.
