I AM THE 2ND OWNER OF THIS CAR , AND I HAVE LOVED IT UNTIL THE DAY THE ACCELERATOR DIDN'T WORK. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A MOUNTAIN, NOT USING THE ACCELERATOR UNTIL I REACHED THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE THE PEDAL WOULD NOT MOVE. I COASTED INTO THE NEAREST TURNOFF. THE CAR WAS RUNNING , I PUT IT INTO" PARK", WHILE STILL RUNNING I CHECKED TO SEE IF THERE WAS SOMETHING (FLOORMATS) BLOCKING THE PEDAL. THERE WAS NOTHING. I TRIED MASHING IT AS HARD AS I COULD, NO MOVEMENT. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTED. THE PEDAL WAS OK, ACCELERATED JUST FINE. I BELIEVE I REBOOTED THE COMPUTER. I CAREFULLY DROVE TO MY MECHANIC, HE CHECKED THE "PLATES" AND OTHER POSSIBLE PROBLEMS AND COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE , THEY ADVISED TAKING IT TO THE NEAREST DEALER. I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST BUT I COULD BRING IT IN TO BE CHECKED. I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR THAT DISTANCE OVER 200 MILES ROUNDTRIP. I LATER RECEIVED A SMALL CHECK FROM "TOYOTA ECONOMIC LOSS SETTLEMENT ADMINISTRATOR " FOR A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT. I DID NOT CASH IT. I WAS ADVISED BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR. I WOULD LIKE TO SELL IT BUT ETHICALLY CAN NOT BECAUSE I DON'T WANT SOMEBODY KILLED OR INJURED IN IT. I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AT THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND A SOLUTION. BUT THEY CLAIM THIS PROBLEM COULDN'T HAPPEN AND WERE NOT HELPFUL. IT COULD BE SOLD TO A JUNK YARD AT A LOSS BUT AGAIN, IT COULD BE SOLD FROM THERE AND DRIVEN. ANY ADVICE?
EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION. CAR ALL OF SUDDEN ACCELERATED. TRIED TO STOP CAR WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. ALSO, TRIED TO PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL AND PARK AS WELL AS TURN OFF THE ENGINE. HAD TO RUN CAR INTO HILLSIDE BANK TO STOP THE CAR. *TR
EMISSIONS SYSTEM. OBD II CODE P0446 FAILED VENT VALVE (APPARENTLY THERE ARE 3 OF THESE, ONE NEXT TO THE AIR CLEANER HOUSING, AND TWO ON THE CHARCOAL CANISTER LOCATED UNDER THE CAR NEXT TO THE GAS TANK). THE SYSTEM IS INSTALLED TO MEET EPA REQUIREMENTS WHICH LIMIT HYDROCARBON EMISSIONS FROM THE ATMOSPHERE. THIS FAILURE ALONG WITH OTHERS REPRESENTED BY CODES P0440, P0441, P0442, ETC. HAVE BEEN REPORTED ESPECIALLY FOR TOYOTA MODELS BUILT FROM THE LATE 1990'S THROUGH EARLY TO MID 2000S AND HAVE PLAGUED MOTORIST FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS OR MORE. YET NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN BY EPA OR DOT TO REMEDY WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECT IN THIS SYSTEM IN THESE CARS AS REPORTED NUMEROUS TIMES HERE AND IN OTHER PLACES ON THE INTERNET. WHY NOT? IF LIMITING EMISSIONS IS SO IMPORTANT WHY HAVEN'T YOU REQUIRED A RECALL OF AUTOMOBILES MANUFACTURED WITH DEFECTIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEMS? WHAT HAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED BY OWNERS OF THESE AUTOMOBILES IS CONSISTENT MISDIAGNOSIS OF THIS FAILURE BY DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENTS AND INDEPENDENT MECHANICS COSTING DRIVERS HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN UNNECESSARY REPAIRS ONLY TO HAVE THE SAME CODE(S) REOCCUR A FEW DAYS OR WEEKS LATER. THE RESULT: FAILED STATE EMISSIONS TESTS, DRIVERS UNABLE TO USE THEIR AUTOMOBILES TO GET TO WORK, AND MORE COSTLY REPAIRS. NOT TO MENTION FOULED AIR. IF THIS SYSTEM IS SO COMPLEX THAT EVEN DEALERS CAN'T PROPERLY DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR IT, THAT IN ITSELF IS CAUSE TO RECALL IT, REPAIR IT PROPERLY AND GET THESE CARS BACK ON THE ROAD SAFELY. YOU STATE THAT COMPLAINT INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT TO YOUR AGENCY, YET YOU'VE DONE NOTHING TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE FOR THE MAJORITY OF MOTORISTS THAT HAVE REPORTED THIS FLAW TO YOU MANY TIMES OVER MANY YEARS. DON'T YOU THINK IT'S TIME YOU DID SO? SOME MAY CONCLUDE THAT YOUR FAILURE TO ACT INDICATES THAT THE MANUFACTURERS CONTROL YOUR AGENCY AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. *TR
2001 TOYOTA CAMRY, TIGHT GAS PEDAL. *TR
WHEN MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN MY 2001 TOYOTA CAMRY, I BROUGHT THE CAR TO BAKER AUTO SERVICE. I WAS TOLD THE VSV NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, IT WAS ON A RECALL LIST AND I SHOULD TAKE IT TO A TOYOTA DEALER. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO KING TOYOTA IN DEERFIELD BEACH, FL AND PAID AN $80.88 DIAGNOSTIC FEE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR NEEDED VSV AND A CHARCOAL CANISTER. I WAS ALSO TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THESE PARTS AND THE REPAIR COST WOULD BE $628. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT IS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS NOT TO REPLACE THESE PARTS BECAUSE IF I AM REAR-ENDED THE GAS TANK WILL EXPLODE, SIMILAR TO THE RECALL FOR THE FORD PINTO. IF THIS IS THE CASE, WHY HAVE THESE PARTS NOT BEEN RECALLED? PLEASE ADVISE ME ON ANY MENDING ACTION ON THIS PROBLEM AND ANY RECOURSE I MIGHT HAVE. *NM
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. DEALER REPLACED VALVE AND VACUUM SWITCH. ELEVEN MONTHS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED, ONLY THIS TIME IT WAS ANOTHER VALVE AND THE SOP CANISTER. *NM WE WENT ON A TOYOTA CAMRY CHAT LINE AND DISCOVERED MANY MANY OTHER OWNERS WITH THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAD ONLY 28000 MIS. WITH THE FIRST REPAIR AND 34,000 WITH THE SECOND AND LARGER REPAIR. IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH A LARGE NUMBER OF CAMRYS. SHOULD THERE BE A RECALL?
THE CHARCOAL CANISTER WAS REPLACED DUE TO AN INTERNAL LEAK INSIDE THE CANISTER. *NM *JB
THE GAS CAP WILL NOT STAY SECURE TIGHTLY AND WILL LOSE FUEL. *AK
I AM NOT GETTING THE MILES PER GALLON EXPECTED. I HAVE A 4 CYLINDER AND I AM ONLY GETTING 16-19 MILES PER GALLON IN THE CITY, AND AROUND 27-28 HIGHWAY. I GOT BETTER GAS MILEAGE WITH MY 6 CYLINDER INTRIGUE. *JB
CONSUMERS CONCERN WITH THE VEHICLE REGARDS EXCESSIVE COLD IDLE SPEED WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE. WHEN CONSUMER DRIVES OUT OF HIS ALLEY, THERE IS A DOWNHILL SLOPE WHICH TAKES A LOT OF BRAKE PRESSURE TO STOP AND HOLD THE VEHICLE ON THE SLOPE. THE VEHICLE IS ALSO DIFFICULT TO STOP ON ICY CONDITIONS BECAUSE THE ENGINE IS TRYING TO RACE. CONSUMER BELIEVES THAT THIS VEHICLE IS NOT ACHIEVING THE SPECIFIED FUEL MILEAGE PER GALLON. THE MPG FOR THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE ARE 27 HIGHWAY 22 CITY. THIS VEHICLE, A COMBINATION OF 19 MPG. *JG
CAR SPUTTERS AND KILLS WHILE TRYING TO START. WILL START AFTER A COUPLE OF ATTEMPTS - THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN NAMED THE "COLD START PROBLEM" BY TOYOTA.. TOYOTA HAS REPLACED THE COMPUTER, FUEL INJECTORS, FUEL PUMP, FUEL REGULATOR, SPARK PLUGS, CLEANED THE ENGINE.....NO GOOD. CAR IS DEFECTIVE AND THEY REFUSE TO REPLACE.
