Entire frame of the vehicle is rotten with rust and holes. This vehicle has been inspected by McDaniel Toyota, Marion, OH 43302 and the damage was confirmed. I have been and must continue to drive this vehicle even though the dealership did not recommend it. No evidence of the extent of the rust and damage was not noticed until October 2023 when a strap on the gas tank came loose. Upon further inspection, he noticed the holes and rust all over the frame. Reported to Toyota because other 2004 Models were recalled for this issue. They were of no assistance.

Frame of this vehicle completely rusted through. Holes on passenger side right where the front door ends. Hole is approx 12" long. Frame also has a hole in the left front core support. Advised that the vehicle is no longer safe to drive by my Toyota Dealer and personal mechanic. . There were no indications of this until a few weeks ago when the gas tank strap had come off and the gas tank was leaning. When inspected, it was found the frame was in disrepair.

Purchased 4 runner from a Toyota dealer in 2018 with 130k miles. During routine maintenance in 2021 with 160k. The frame was found to have several holes and wide spread corrosion. It is absurd that Toyotas was let off the hook for frame replacements. I bought this truck from the dealer and it had structural frame issues that were not disclosed at the time of sale. Frames don’t just fall apart apart in 4 years from normal driving. Clearly Toyota is ignoring the manufacturing deficits in there frames and still re-selling these as road worthy cars. It’s absurd that Toyota was not required to replace these and not recall has been issued. People should not be able to buy/sell one off these vehicles they are not safe due to the frames rusting from the inside-out. They need to be recalled and removed from service.

The frame is damaged from excessive corrosion. The rear cross member that supports the trailer hitch and rear bumper is almost non-existent, which could result in the loss of the trailer being towed, and it will reduce the truck's rear impact resistance. The front right lower control arm has a 2'" x 3/8" lateral hole from corrosion, which could result in a catastrophic failure of the right front suspension system. The longitudinal frame members are compromised by corrosion which has penetrated through the steel in various locations. The front cross-frame member that supports the radiator is severely corroded. The frame to body mounts are showing signs of excessive corrosion which could result in the separation of the the body from the frame in an accident.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota 4Runner. The contact stated that he noticed that the tow hitch had separated from the frame and was laying on the ground. The contact stated upon inspecting the subframe of the vehicle, he noticed that the subframe to which the radiator mount was attached was severely corroded. The contact stated that upon changing the oil in the vehicle he noticed that the front passenger’s side subframe had a significant size hole. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case numbers to the contact. The failure mileage was approximately 224,000. The contact stated that their vehicle is not a part of the recall that affects other Toyota models although other 4Runners have experienced similar issues. It was recommended to the contact to sell or trade-in their vehicle. No repairs were made.

We took our 2004 4Runner for annual vehicle inspection and the service provider told us the vehicle would not pass safety inspection due to the excessive rusting on the steel frame and the suspension of the vehicle. Welding and patchwork will not fix this issue. My husband depends on this vehicle to work. The attached pictures give a small window into the extent of the damage. There is no current recall for this vehicle and year, but similar Toyota trucks from the same time frame have been recalled for the same exact issue. The entire frame needs to be replaced or worst case scenario, the vehicle is no longer usable. Toyota needs to remedy this issue for their loyal customers immediately.

Complete frame rust-out. Suspension at rear axle disintegrated. Vehicle undriveable. My son had just taken the vehicle (moving his belongings) from Minnesota to the East Coast and back. No problems or issues. After returning, while driving the vehicle I had a hard braking event which is when I noticed something was drastically wrong. This frame failure really snuck up on us. We were lucky, no accident or incidents occurred.

I bought my 2004 Toyota 4runner Sport edition as a new car, and have been the sole owner of the vehicle. I have taken good care of it the entire time. Regular car washes, service maintenance and necessary repairs over time. I recently had my 4runner in for repairs and spent a considerable amount of money, over $6,000 in anticipation of driving it for many more years. Following the repairs I was told by the mechanic that the frame was EXTREMELY rusted and that the entire frame would need to be replaced. There are large holes rusted through in many areas of the frame and a tremendous amount of rust over the entire frame. Rusted Pieces of the frame have fallen off. I fear for the safety of my family and me if I were to drive the vehicle at all. I have barely driven it since learning of the dangerous condition of the frame. I've limited any driving at all to my immediate area, and have driven very carefully and slowly, as I am extremely concerned that there might be a catastrophic failure of the frame while driving and I may be injured or killed, or worse....the vehicle might cause harm or death to another person. I am now basically without a vehicle and have been forced to rely on my daughter's car, leaving the family with only one vehicle. This is a major failure of the vehicle. My Car was inspected by a Virginia Inspection Station and was cited for significant rust holes in the frame which have to be repaired. The frame should not have such significant rust that it needs to be fixed or it will be a hazard on the road. Based on other litigation around Toyota fames from this period of time is seems that this is a systemic issue and should be made to provide a recall based on the safety risk that is present with a frame failure as noted in previous class-action lawsuits. The Brian Warner et al. v. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., Class Action Settlement (UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA Case No. 2:15-cv-02171-FMO-FFM) is a perfect example of the risk to the public if this is not corrected.

The entire frame is rusted. It's been welded back together on 2 different occasions. The last time it happened I was pulling out of driveway and the vehicle cannot be steered at all. I live in east TN and should not have a rusted frame. This is not an isolated problem. This is a problem with the 4runners and should be recalled. He informed us that the frame of the vehicle was nearly rusted into and that it's serious safety issue to continue to drive it. It is my understanding the Toyota recalled several other models with this same issue but did not include the 4Runner in this recall.

I took my car in for repair. Check engine light and VSC track lights on with horrible sound beneath the car. The auto repair shop called me and said the frame and underbody of the car is so rusted it will break apart if I drive over a pothole. So rusted that there is nothing to be able to attach to under the car. I am original owner and had rust proofing applied to the car there when I bought it. They charged me nothing because there is nothing they can do, they can’t even weld it it’s nothing but rust.

Frame started excessive rusting before 2011 when the vehicle had very low miles on it. I reported it to Toyota National headquarters in 2016. They knew about it but since they didn't have to replace the frames they didn't care. They offered me $1000 towards a new car. I could not afford a new car. I have been battling the rust ever since. I spent $4000 in the past 2 years. I was driving with a broken front axle!! Recently the rust corroded my brake fluid lines causing the lines to fail all at once. Luckily I was leaving my driveway. I had no brakes and was headed for the road. I hit the emergency brake and stopped at the road. Brake fluid fell out all over my driveway. I had to spend $400 getting my driveway resealed and $300 for the new brake lines which was really cheap. I took the truck to Toyota to trade it in and they would only give me $1500 for the beautifully, well cared for truck with only 135000 miles on it because the frame was rusted. They replaced the frames on the Tundra and Tacoma, which were the same frames. They need to replace the frames on the 4Runners or compensate the owners like me. I am the original owner. I bought the dealers demo in 2005. I want the $10,000 they owe me. I am moving and I have to sell this truck, instead of waiting for Toyota to replace the frame, because it is unsafe to drive from NY to NC. I am very sad. Other than the rust this truck is fantastic. I feel like a good friend died! It hurts to let it go. I will have to sell it privately. I think $1500 from the dealer is criminal.

ACCORDING TO KBB THERE IS NOT WITH MY CORRESPONDING VIN NUMBER WHICH IS A DANG SHAME BECAUSE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND I SHOULD T BE AFRAID TO DRIVE MY GRAND CHILDREN AROUND IN FEAR THAT MY FRAME WON'T SUPPORT US. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE TOYOTA IS KNOWN FOR THEIR SAFETY, RELIABILITY.INTEGRITY AND LONGEVITY. TL* THE CONTACT'S SON OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HIS SON WAS DRIVING 15 MPH, HIS SON HEARD A LOUD POPPING SOUND AS THE REAR AXLE TRAILING ARM FELL OFF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC PLACED THE VEHICLE ON A HOIST, AND DEEMED THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO SEVERE CORROSION TO THE UNDERCARRIAGE. THE CONTACT THEN HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 104,000.

THIS WELL MAINTAINED VEHICLE HAD BEEN FUNCTIONING FLAWLESSLY UP TO THIS POINT. OUR SON WAS ON HIS WAY HOME AND VEHICLE FELT UNSTABLE AND STARTED TO VEER IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. HE MAINTAINED CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND WAS ABLE TO GET HOME. I PERSONALLY DROVE THE VEHICLE UPON HIS DESCRIPTION AND SURE ENOUGH IT SEEMED VERY UNSTABLE. AFTER CLOSE EXAMINATION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FRAME HAD SEPARATED AT A LOCATION WHICH LEFT A DRIVERS SIDE REAR STABILIZER BAR DETACHED FROM THE FRAME. THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY DETERIORATING AND FLAKING APART. THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. WE PURCHASED THIS ONE OWNER VEHICLE FOR OUR SON. WE OWNED A TOYOTA SEQUOIA THAT GAVE US SAFE RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION FOR OUR FAMILY FOR MANY YEARS AND THOUGHT THIS 4RUNNER WOULD BE A SAFE AND RELIABLE VEHICLE FOR OUR SON TO GO OFF TO COLLEGE. THE BODY AND MECHANICS OF THE VEHICLE WERE VERY SOUND. NOW, TO FIND OUT, BECAUSE OF THE INFERIOR FRAME, THE VEHICLE IS WORTHLESS. WE ARE OUT THE MONEY WE PAID FOR THE VEHICLE AND DISHEARTENED BY TOYOTA'S RESPONSE THAT OUR VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THE FRAME RECALL THAT WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND SAFETY ISSUE FOR SO MANY OWNERS. THIS COULD HAVE TURNED OUT TO BE A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION IF HE HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL. WE UNDERSTAND RUST & CORROSION, BUT THIS IS EXTREME. WHAT'S FUNNY I'VE BEEN TOLD BY TOYOTA REPS ALSO THAT THE 4RUNNER HAS THE VERY SAME FRAME AS THE TACOMA'S. SO IF THAT'S SO WHY CAN'T THEY REPLACE THESE ALSO? FRAME AND REAR AXLE HOUSING RUST - CAUSED THE UPPER CONTROL ARMS, WHICH PREVENT ROTATION OF THE REAR AXEL, TO DISCONNECT FROM THE HOUSING/FRAME. ALSO, STEERING HAS BECOME STIFF AND BUMPY AS YOU TURN THE WHEEL. THIS MAY BE DUE TO FRONT CROSSMEMBER RUST OR RUST ON THE STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT. I LIVE ON LONG ISLAND AND HAVE THE CAR BOTTOM WASHED WHENEVER IT HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO SNOW MELTING SALTS/COMPOUNDS. MY MECHANIC SAYS THE CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE.

MY 2004 4RUNNER, WITH LESS THAN 80,000 MILES, HAS SIGNIFICANT AND OVERWHELMING UNDER CARRIAGE RUST. THERE IS A FRAME ROT HOLE. ONE OF THE TRAILING ARM BRACKETS ON THE AXLE HAS RUSTED TO THE POINT WHERE THE TRAILING ARM WAS NO LONGER CONNECTED. THIS IS ONE OF THE POINTS WHERE THE AXEL IS CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE AND KEEPS THE AXEL FROM ROTATING. THERE ARE FRONT SUSPENSION PARTS COMPLETELY RUSTED TO THE POINT MY VEHICLE CAN NO LONGER RECEIVE A SUCCESSFUL FRONT END ALIGNMENT. THESE ARE THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS, THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER ISSUES DUE TO UNBELIEVABLE RUST.

THERE IS LOT OF RUST ON FRAME, UNDER CARRIAGE AND ITS ALSO IN THE SUSPENSION. ITS ALSO CAUSING FLUIDS TO LEAK AND I HAD TO REPLACE THE MUFFLER ASSEMBLY DUE TO RUST. I PURCHASED THIS CAR AS CERTIFIED USED FROM PRESTIGE TOYOTA OF NJ WITH ONLY 5000 MILES IN AUGUST OF 2005, I PURCHASED THIS TOYOTA BECAUSE OF THEIR STELLAR REPUTATION IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY BUT I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS CAR. I HAVE LESS THAN 109,000 MILES AND AT THE WAY THIS RUST IS PROGRESSING, I WILL HAVE TO JUNK THE CAR VERY SOON. I CANT RISK BEING ON THE ROAD WITH MY FAMILY AND HAVE THIS RUST BUCKET FALL APART ON THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I HAVE BEEN WAITING TO SEE IF THERE IS A RECALL BUT HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING COME THROUGH YET. PLEASE INCLUDE MY CAR IN ANY VEHICLE SAFETY RECALLS, OR CLASS ACTION SUITS AGAINST TOYOTA. THANK YOU

RUST POINTS AROUND RADIATOR SUPPORT MOUNTS, AND PASSENGER SIDE RAIL, NEAR MUFFLER MOUNT, AND REAR SUSPENSION MOUNT POINT. WITH DAMAGE, CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. TOYOTA STATES NO RESOLUTION OPTION EXISTS. SIMILAR YEAR TACOMAS FRAMES ARE BEING REPLACED WITH IDENTICAL DAMAGE.

THERE IS EXCESSIVE RUST/CORROSION ON THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK. THE SKID PLATES COMPLETELY RUSTED OFF THE TRUCK IN 2010. THE TRANSMISSION LINES HAVE CORRODED TO THE POINT THEY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE ENGINE OIL COOLER AND RADIATOR SUPPORTS HAVE RUSTED THROUGH. THE EXHAUST RUSTED OFF THE TRUCK IN 2010 AS WELL. CURRENTLY THERE IS EXTENSIVE CORROSION ON THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK AND THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. THESE ISSUES APPEARED IN 2010 AND I HAVE BEEN FIGHTING THEM EVER SINCE. MECHANICALLY THE TRUCK RUNS GREAT, NEVER A PROBLEM, HOWEVER THE VEHICLE'S FRAME IS DISINTEGRATING DUE TO CORROSION.

EXCESSIVE RUST AND CORROSION TO THE POINT WHERE MY SKID PLATE CAME OFF AND TRANSMISSION FLUID LINES BROKE APART, LEADING TO MAJOR LEAK AND FIX - LUCKILY IT CAME OFF IN DRIVEWAY AND NOT ON HIGHWAY WHERE SOMEONE COULD HAVE BEEN SIGNIFICANTLY INJURED. SHOCKS HAVE HOLES IN THEM FROM RUST AND CORROSION, AS DO SUPPORT BARS AND FRAME. CAN BREAK OFF PIECES OF THE FRAME IN MY HAND WITHOUT EFFORT. CONCERNED THAT FRAME COULD CRACK, SUPPORT COMPONENTS COULD FAIL WHILE DRIVING BECAUSE OF CORROSION. OTHER TOYOTA MODELS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR RUST, USING THE SAME COMPONENTS BUT ASSEMBLED IN DIFFERENT FACTORIES THAN THE 4RUNNER AND LAND CRUISER MODELS, TO MY UNDERSTANDING. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT TOYOTA MUST ADDRESS BEFORE ANYONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED.

I WAS GOING 5 MPH AND HIT MY BRAKES. THE CONTROL ARM WAS RIPPED FROM THE FRAME DUE TO ROT/RUST. TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM FOR 4RUNNERS, BUT HAS ONLY OFFERED ASSISTANCE ON THE TACOMA AND TUNDRAS. THE BODY OF MY VEHICLE HAS NO RUST ANYWHERE, AND THE MILEAGE IS EXTREMELY LOW. I CANNOT EVEN FIND A MECHANIC TO FIX IT, BECAUSE THE FRAME IS SO BAD. I WAS TOLD, IF IT GETS FIXED, ANOTHER PART OF THE FRAME MAY FAIL WHEN I'M CRUISING ON THE HIGHWAY AND PEOPLE COULD GET HURT OR KILLED. NO MECHANIC WANTS THIS LIABILITY IN DOING A REPAIR.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA 4-RUNNER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO ENGAGE THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE BUT IT WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO A STOP AND SHE THEN ATTEMPTED TO ENGAGE THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE AGAIN BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE SHE WAS ADVISED THAT THE TRANSFER HOSE WAS FRACTURED AND BOTH REAR AXLES WERE LEAKING. THE FAILURE WOULD ONLY OCCUR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ENGAGE THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 112,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 113,000. I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE FRONT END ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS WITH MY 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SINCE DAY ONE. THE TIRES ARE WEARING ON THE FRONT END ON THE OUTSIDE EDGE EXTREMELY FAST. TOYOTA HAS REPLACED THE TIRES, BUT THE NEW TIRES ARE WEARING VERY QUICKLY ( IT IS BEING DESCRIBED AS FEATHERING). TOYOTA OF RICHARDSON HAS ADMITTED THAT THERE IS A FRONT END PROBLEM, BUT THEY ARE NOT SURE HOW TO REPAIR THE FRONT END. I ONLY HAVE 7500 MILES AND SO FAR AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND TOYOTA DIRECTLY. THE FRONT END FEELS UNSAFE. *JB
