2018 Subaru Outback Wipers & Visibility Problems

Sunroof's glass panel exploded/shattered unexpectedly due to unknown cause(s)/reason(s) while driving vehicle. No external item(s) contacted sunroof glass panel.

My husband, son, and I got into our parked 2018 Subaru Outback and closed our doors. My husband started the car and we immediately heard a loud “pop” and saw a crack spread in several directions from the driver’s side edge of the windshield across the driver’s line of vision. Upon closer inspection, we were able to see 3 tiny chips in the glass, one of which was incorporated into the crack.

I was driving to work on the intestate on a cool overcast morning. There were no other cars around me at the time and I was not near any over passes when all of a sudden I heard a loud sound from my roof and then the glass falling on the roof. I was freaked out by it and it caused me to swerve.

The windshield of this 2018 subaru outback has fractured three times in less than three years of ownership. In all three instances, there was no known projectile that caused impacted the vehicle to cause the hairline cracks. The windshield appears to have cracked on its own.

I received a single minute hit from an 18-wheeler while driving on a freeway and now that grown within a month to covering the whole windshield like an art drawing my fear is driver assist camera may be affected putting others and me in accident danger

Left sideview mirror does not rotate far enough to left: a person or vehicle within 3 feet or greater distance of left side and adjacent with aft of left rear door (ie, parallel to the break line of the door where it closes) cannot be seen in side view mirror. A replacement mirror was installed by dealer, but the problem remains. Checking out another new 2018 outback resulted in same problem.

The ability to adjust the outside driver side mirror is significantly restricted in comparison to the passenger outside side mirror. This increases the chance of an operator being in an accident due to reduced awareness and/or needed increased reaction time to compensate for this design flaw.

Replaced windshield at dealer using factory glass on 8/7/24. Daughter came out of apartment on approximately the 18th of December and the windshield had a horizontal crack from side to side. She did not have anything hit the windshield and there were not dings or stars in it.

On september 23, 2019 at about 1 pm mst I was driving north on arizona route 89, just north of the rt 64 intersection. I was on a divided section of paved highway traveling at no more than 40 miles per hour. There is a distorted view through the driver's side and passenger side windows. Subaru of america, and the service department at the dealership the vehicle lease was signed at, both tell me that because it's tempered glass, that's how they come. This is visible when in motion or when the vehicle is in park.

Spontaneous sunroof glass explosion

We have experienced 3 cracked windshields within 4 months due to small rock debris kicked-up from passing vehicles. Each crack originated at the edge of the glass; 2 from outside edge passenger side and 1 from center bottom edge passenger side. Driving conditions were different for each incident, as each incident occurred during highway driving during light, medium, and heavy traffic flow.

This vehicle has less than 65,000 miles and has had 3 genuine Subaru windshields crack as a result of road hazards. We live in Los Angeles County and the windshields have cracked as a result of unseen freeway debris/objects (I.e., not a large object such as a chunk of a truck tire). In 45 years of driving, I have never experienced this many windshield failures.

My 2018 Subaru Outback's windshield has cracked overnight parked on the driveway. There's no visible rock strike point. This will be the 4th windshield replacement in the 5 year ownership.

I was changing the passenger side wiper blade, and when the wiper was lowered to the windshield, the windshield cracked. The crack is now moving up towards the forward eyesight detection system.

The windshield got cracked again from almost the same place as last time in 2019. Again, I found out the incident the morning when I just started driving. The crack originates from bottom of the glass without any chips.

The windshield cracked while driving at 45mph on a normal street. Nothing hit the windshield, it just popped and cracked. This is the second time this has happened to this vehicle.

A crack has developed from the base of the windshield and has grown to about 9 inches so far as it crosses along the windshield. The only thing that has hit the windshield was a small bug as we traveled along the highway. The sound of the bug hitting the windshield was so tiny neither my wife or I could believe that was what caused the crack.

Windshield has a long crack in it that begins under the passenger side windshield wiper. There are no signs of impact whatsoever. First noticed the crack in early January of 2022.

This is the second windshield on my 2018 Subaru Outback that has cracked near the A-pillar without any evidence of being caused by an impact.

Windshield washer barely works, only one of the three nozzles will spray fluid. Pump sounds like it's working and fluid is full. For sure a safety issue in winter months.

Windshield has cracked twice with no dings. The crack starts at the top and goes down and then horizontal. The car only has 18,500 miles on it.

didn't have any cracks in the windshield when I arrived at work, parked, and went inside for 8 for my shift. At the end of the day when I came out to the car and got in to go there was a single long curving crack that was over 12 inches long. didn't see any impact marks or other reason that it may have cracked.

I was driving down the road (2 lane highway) and the windshield cracked. It sounded like a gunshot. There were no other cars around me, and no vehicle near to throw up a rock.

It happened in august of 2020. Vehicle was stationary in a grocery store parking lot on a clear sunny day. It was fairly hot outside (a/c was running) and I was sitting in the car eating when I heard a popping/cracking sound.

Windshield cracked and within 3 days ran across most of the entire width of the front windshield.

Windshield spontaneously cracked during the night. Vehicle was parked at residence when it cracked. The low temperature was at or just below zero degrees farenheit.

My windshield spiderwebbed when it was hit with rock. At first it chipped and then a couple minutes later it spiderwebbed into a crack that is almost a foot long. This also happened to me when I was coming home from thanksgiving.

So I just got this subaru a few weeks ago and today in the right side look like the tinniest rock in the world hit it and cracked my windshield. I've talked to a few a my buddy's who own subaru's as well and was told to contact y'all because the new models have a very thin windshield and y'all will have it taken care of. Windshield cracked twice in the last six months after getting hit by small pebble while driving within speed limit on highway.

Well it was 25below here and my windshield cracked on its own while in the schoolteachers parking lot.

Crack appeared in right side of windshield for no reason as outback had been sitting parked the driveway for 5 days. It is about 6' long from left to right then turns right or downward about 3'.

For the second in time less than a year the windshield has cracked as a result of minor road debris. The first time subaru covered the replacement under warranty. I have recently contacted them about this incident and I am awaiting a resolution.

Ii was parked at a friends residence for about four hours. When I left and was still on his driveway I saw that my windshield had a crack in it from the bottom of the passenger side going up about a third of the windshield and continuing towards the drivers side about ten inches. There had been no impact with anything, the crack appeared on it's own.

On route 6 was traveling behind a truck and had road debris thrown at the windshield causing putting and one with spider cracks radiating from it.

My car was purchased in april of this year. Within the first few weeks a crack appeared on the top right of the windshield. A couple months later another crack appeared in the bottom middle of my windshield.

While driving on a city street, I drove over a bump. The windshield developed a long crack starting at the left edge. The crack continues up and to the right crossing in front of the driver's view area.

The windshield on this car has chipped 10+ times. I have never had a piece of glass chip so many times.

Outback 2018 windshield started showing cracks while driving in highway. We had been driving for 1 hour in highway and suddenly saw the windshield cracking . In 15 mins, the crack got bigger and it was very tensed condition since I had my wife , new born baby and old parents in the car.

I went out to my car in the driveway this morning and the windshield had a 6 inch "t" shaped crack starting with a single crack emanating from the middle of the windshield on the passenger side, horizontally about 6 inches toward the driver side, then perpendicular in a t formation 3 inches up and down . The previous night I had driven the vehicle and the windshield was fine.

My windshield cracked for no apparent reason on the driver's side. The car had not been hit by anything, but had been sitting idle overnight. There was only a 15 degree temperature change so it wasn't that.

2018 subaru outback deveolped a crack in the windshield that originated on the lower left corner in the de-icer region. The curious location of this crack LED me to seek out what could have happened.

The windshield mysteriously cracked on the lower third of the passenger side and immediately spidered out in all directions like a starburst even though the vehicle was sitting by itself in broad daylight in a lowe's parking lot. Like many others, my windshield started cracking in 2 separate places. One long crack from just above the wiper blade spanning 18 inches, and another one that starts from midway up on the passenger side about 2 feet long that almost links up with the other one. Two separate instances of a crack have formed while driving in normal conditions without a notable incident connected to the cracks. The initial cracks were noticed while driving on the highway.

Normal driving 45 MPH highway and without reason the windshield started to crack about one inch then kept getting longer about 20 minutes later the crack was about 8 inches long.

I have been suffering from repeated windshield cracks, in a variety of road conditions, with this vehicle. Between my own car, and loaner vehicles of the same year/model, I have had 5 windshields crack in less than 30,000 miles. Most instances I did not see any debris impact the vehicle.

The windshield cracked after starting defroster while still parked in the unheated garage. The vehicle was not in motion and there was no crack prior to starting the defroster.

The car was parked in an end space parking. When I returned the windshield was cracked on the passenger side. No marks, dings or dents are near or around the cracked windshield.

Over the last 6 months I have gotten 6 rock chips that have come from driving on ground roads at speed of no more than 40 MPH some were from bugs or dirt clods. One chip has resulted in a break going up the middle of the window and will soon be in the eyesight system. The crack happened while sitting in a sheltered parking lot during a warm 75 degree day.

While parked indoors a front windshield crack first appeared on lower drivers side of windshield. No sign of being struck by projectile.

The windshield has a chip in it & I do not remember getting it by any pebble. Seems the windshield may be defective. This is a new vehicle.

While driving on a trip, a crack appeared on the lower passenger portion of the windshield and proceeded to grow up and across the windshield over the next 24 hours. Often times the crack growth was observable. Subaru would not cover because the crack had already exceeded their size limit before it could get into a shop.

My windshield cracked without being hit or chipped while the car was parked.

I was on an on ramp about to enter highway near where I live. I wasn't yet at highway speed. Suddenly not sure if a rock or rock salt hit my windshield.

I have a 2018 subaru outback (less than 2 years old). Driving on the highway and heard a glass crack. Then I noticed that there was a large window crack starting from the bottom of the windshield (driver side windshield wiper) and curving upwards towards the center.

I was driving on a 2 lane hwy going about 50mph when I spotted a small star crack in the bottom, middle of my windshield. The crack has continued to grow, mostly horizontal over the next 2 weeks. The weather was mild, about 55 degrees and there was no one driving in front of me.

On returning to parked car mid-day on 2/2/2020 (a mild winter day, parked in shade at ski resort), I saw a t shaped crack on lower part of windshield just on passenger side of center. There was no chip or dent or crack in the central windshield when I parked the car. I didn't see or hear an impact to the windshield on the drive that morning.

We have 2 cracks that continue to grow on our windshield. We have never had a windshield crack in this way in over 50 years of driving. The cracks grow overnight in the garage!!

While driving on the freeway a rock of piece of gravel hit the passenger side front windshield approximately 1/8" from the top edge of the glass immediately resulting in a crack which within hours spread across the windshield.

A small rock or piece of gravel hit the driver's side windshield approximately 3" from the top edge while driving on the freeway. Almost immediately a 12" long crack developed and has continued to spread. This is the second time this has happened in 16 months.

In august 2019 driving at about 40mph on a samll country road a very small piece of gravel stuck windshield and within 20 minutes it expanded to a crack over 18 inches long. Just five months later on december 22 driving at about 65mph on interstate 5 another small stone struck wind shield and within 30 minutes a crack formed almost 14 inches. Both windshields were subaru oem parts.

Small rock hit windshield and it caused a huge crack in march 2019 and then again in november 2019. We were driving down the highway when it happened. It should have cause no damage or just a little chip, not huge cracks.

Windscreen is easily cracked by any pebbles that knick thr shield. First time the screen was hit by a pebble from a moving vehicle and the crack spread all the way across the screen. Had to replace it with another subaru glass.

Car parked in driveway in morning and windshield was fine. Few hours later there was a two foot crack from the drivers side to the mid point of the windshield.

The windshield cracked, starting at the bottom middle, and spreading up and then in all directions. There is no point of impact and the crack started while parked int the driveway, away from the front of the house.

Driving on highway one day heard a crack. Parked the car and after a few hours noticed a small hairline crack. That started from the middle passenger side.

Car was in motion and a loud pop in the windshield area was heard. After arriving home there is a crack in the windshield by the wiper blades that has extended about 6inches up. There did not appear to be rock or foreign object that hit the windshield.

A large crack, like the shape of a question mark, spontaneously appeared in my windshield. The crack starts below the windshield wiper, up about 7 inches and curves back down. Car was moved out of our garage and parked in driveway when the crack appeared!!!!!

A rock hit my windshield and produced a significant divot and crack while the driver ahead of me and I were turning from a stop in the left turn lane.

I was traveling at about 35 MPH with traffic when a rock hit my windshield and created two chips. These are the second and third chips in this window since I bought the vehicle in april 2019.

Nothing has happened. The drivers side mirror will not adjust far enough out to comply with the current recommendation for side/rear vision leaving a blind spot. The subaru outback touring has electronic warning that may interfere with the mechanical capacity of the mirror.

When it rains the water drops do not run off of the side mirrors we are unable to see. At night the drops of water magnifies the headlights of the cars behind us and this blinds us. This is very dangerous.

The head unit went black and that means I do not have a back up camera. I live in a place where back up camera is a must. I purchased this unit because it have a big back up camera and all 2018 models must have back up camera.

A tiny pebble struck the windshield on the interstate, but it suddenly grew to a crack approximately 6 inches long. Never had this problem before, and my car is fairly new on the road (less than 8,000 miles, bought in july, 2018). Deeply concerned that subaru still has not figured out its notorious windshield-reliability problem that has frustrated so many drivers throughout the past 5 years.

Rear view mirror too tightly attached to front window. Epoxy attaching window got hot in sun and cracked entire window and fell off.

Driving interstate, 65mph, small object thrown from another vehicle hit my windshield on the left edge. Short cracks appeared immediately. Two spread all the way to the rear view mirror area within days.

The rear view mirror is in my field of view! I am only 5'4" and I like to raise my seat all the way up to give me good visibility. If I do that , the rear view mirror gets in my way, I have to duck down to look under the mirror!!
