2017 Subaru Outback Wipers & Visibility Problems

The windshield has cracked multiple times. I replaced in with the OEM Subaru glass before learning it is a known problem, initially on 2015-16 models but now 2017 to 2020. Subaru insists on recalibration of the ADAS system which has been done, at my expense.

I was warming up my car and clearing it off after a snow storm. The windshield had no problems when I wiped it clear of the snow with the wipers up (I always leave them up before a storm to prevent damage to the blades). When I put the drivers side wiper down, a large crack formed on the windshield starting at the blade on the passenger side and crossing over the driver's side.

I purchased the vehicle used from a dealership on 02/09/2021. On 03/31/2021 while driving the car, I noticed a crack in the windshield near the top center of the windshield. Upon further exploration, I noticed the crack extended from the top-center, down about 4 inches and then another 6 inches towards the passenger side of the vehicle.

These are $1,300 insurance claims each. Subaru needs to figure out what is happening with the poor quality before someone gets hurt from shattered glass or impaired visibility from cracks.

Hello, I am making a complaint about my 2017 Subaru Outback's windshield. I am frustrated that my windshield has cracked for the second time in just over 2 years. In early October 2020, I purchased the vehicle as a used car. Three weeks later a small rock hit the windshield on the driver's side and a small chip became a large crack that spread across my vision over 1 ft long. I brought it to the Subaru dealership I purchased the vehicle from to have it replaced, which cost over $500.00 for parts and labor which included recalibration of the eyesight technology installed with the vehicle. I recently (January 2023) replaced my windshield wipers and as I was doing so the passenger side wiper arm slipped from my hand and struck the windshield and immediately formed a 5 inch crack. The wiper arm was about 3 to 4 inches away from the windshield when this happened. I cannot believe this happened at all. In both cases the cracks traveled well over a foot across the windshield within 2 days. My vehicle is equipped with eyesight technology and I have come to understand that the windshields on these vehicles are made thinner than usual to accommodate it. I believe this is a defect in their windshield manufacturing and/or design. I find it unacceptable the windshield is that fragile. Subaru vehicles are touted as very dependable, rugged and capable of off road use. My confidence in this notion is low and everytime something strikes the windshield I pray it doesn't crack. I will be spending over $1000.00 for new windshields in the 2 plus years I've owned this vehicle.

It is a big s-shaped curve from the top of the windshield where it meet the roof down toward the middle of the windshield below the rear view mirror. My wife contacted me thru text this morning (Monday the 19th, 2021) asking if I remember seeing the windshield cracked (starting on the passanger side) on Saturday, as thats the last time the vehicle was driven. She had just got in the vehicle to go to work, when she saw it. I told her no and couldn't figure out how it even happened as there is no damage of any sort that would of caused it.

I have noticed a crack on the lower corner of the windshield on the driver side. The crack goes from one side to across the bottom of the window, with no evidence of an impact point.

Safety risk: windshield- 05/14/21 exited my home and went to my vehicle that had not moved at all that day or the night prior. I noticed a large crack on my windshield that I had never noticed before. No sign of this crack prior to 5/14/21.

Windshield has a crack in it on lower part pf drivers side out of nowhere

Windshield cracked for no underlying reason. No objects hit it; nor extreme temps.

Had to replace windshield in my wife's 2017 outback 2 times. Both times the same situation: small pebble chips window and a long and eventually growing crack extends across window.

The windshield cracked unexpectedly yesterday afternoon. Vehicle was in motion.

My vehicle developed a crack that has transversed the entirety of the windshield, necessitating its replacement. The crack began on the lower left (driver's) side and moved across to the right (passenger's) side before curving back and upward toward the location of the rearview mirror. This has obscured the eye sight cameras and impaired the safety mechanisms in the vehicle.

While driving on the highway a pebble hit the windshield months before september. There was a chip but no cracks, come september the windshield cracked from the spot where the pebble hit. Pictures are shown below.

The rear view mirror fell off because the glass separated where the mirror attaches to the windshield.

Two chips in the windshield appeared for no apparent reason about ~10 days after purchase of vehicle. Chip # 1 is above the steering wheel and around~ 5 mm size. Chip #2 is in front of passenger seat with a clear crack on the outside and inside of vehicle about the size of ~ 1 cm.

My wife came out of work and noticed a large crack running from the top/center of the windshield down and towards the driver side of the vehicle. The vehicle was parked from 6:30 am to 3:30 pm and was not near another vehicle. The windshield was crack free on her drive into work and she did not have anything hit the window while driving.

Windshield spontaneously cracked while it was parked overnight in our under-house parking space. I had to replace my windshield on my 2017 outback 02/14/2020 and again on 03/21/2020. I didn't notice any direct impact on my windshield. Advanced auto glass in weatherford, tx was the glass company that did the replacement.

Cracked windshield

Windshield crack in the middle of the day while driving to work on a local streets street. It's the bay area in cali, so the weather was around 60 f. There were no sign or chipped or anything.

There are two cracks on the windshield, including areas that don't seem to have been able to be hit by road debris (on the very edge, protected by body trim. These were discovered and haven't been connected to any obvious piece of road debris or dings. They were just discovered in a normal visual inspection prior to driving.

On feb, 22, 2018 while driving south on i35 from norman to purcell, oklahoma the front windshield of our 2017 subaru outback shattered completely. The glass remained in the frame of the car but was fractured into innumerable pieces. The traffic ahead of us was greater than 100 yards and I witnessed no debris airborne before the glass failed.

I parked my car in my apartment's parking garage overnight. When I went out to my vehicle in the morning there was a large crack in the windshield approximately 24". There were no cracks or chips in the windshield prior to the windshield failing, nor did any object strike the windshield when it was parked.

Ironically on the same day that I had the vehicle inspected per rhode island inspection laws, I parked the car in my driveway after the inspection. I came out a while later to find that the windshield was cracked. When I first observed it, the crack was about 6 inches long.

When leaving my garage on 1/2/2020, a 9" vertical crack was first noticed in the top middle portion of the windshield, just below the right eyesight camera of my 2017 outback. My windshield has cracked multiple times. I had to replace it out of pocket when I believe the windshield was defective.

Windshield cracks and requires replacement following the smallest of pebbles impacting windscreen. This is my second replacement following a small hit resulting in the entire screen cracking from molding to molding, rendering the vehicle unsafe to drive.

The windshield just cracked while I was driving entering the freeway. There was no vehicle in front of mine within 150 feet. There is no mark indicating an impact to the windshield where the crack starts.

4th windshield replacement on 2017 subaru outback 2.5i premium with eyesight (43,000 miles). Minor impact while driving which I'm sure happens every day to other makes without needing to replace windshield. Never had to replace a windshield in this household with 80+ years of driving non-subarus.

Have to replace windshield for 2nd time on 2017 subaru outback. Cracks have been both times on drivers side from bottom up under wiper with no chips on windshield. There was a class action suit for the same problem for the 2015 and 16 outbacks which subaru lost but so far they are nor covering the 2017 models which is has a different windshield but having numerous complaints for the same problem.

We purchased the outback 2017 a couple of weeks ago and have discovered that visibility is severely limited when raining and wipers are on, especially when lights are reflected on the windshield. We have researched and have found on the internet that others have the same problem....for years before and for the 2017 models. We were driving on interstate highways and local roads.

I very small rock chip hit my windshield initially causing an 8 inch crack and is now over two feet long. The chip did not even leave an impact mark; if you tried right now to see where the crack started you would not be able to. I reviewed forums online and have seen numerous complaints about outback windshields.

On a bright sunny day it is really difficult to drive as glare from the center infotainment display directly reflects on the eyes, making it hard to see the road. This is a safety issue, the screen should be anti glare. Subaru representative replied they could not help it and asked to find after market anti glare screen protectors.

Star crack in windshield discovered stationary (in carport) the day after purchasing the vehicle (odometer reading 200 miles). Location of crack slightly above wiper blade on passenger side. Impact strike the size of a pinhead.
