FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:AUXILLARY TANK
NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006 AND MODEL YEAR 2008 FRONTIER, XTERRA AND PATHFINDER VEHICLES. THE MOLDED FUEL TANK SHELLS CAN DEFORM, CAUSING THE FUEL SENDER FLOAT ARM TO CONTACT AN EMBOSSMENT MOLDED INTO THE TANK SHELL CAUSING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FUEL GAUGE TO SHOW THAT THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY ONE QUARTER TANK WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS EMPTY.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT INSIDE THE FUEL TANK WITH A NEW ONE THAT HAS A MODIFIED FLOAT ARM. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 22, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

I BOUGHT THE NISSAN PATHFINDER BRAND NEW OFF THE LOT IN LATE 2007. IT ONLY HAS 45 THOUSAND MILES ON IT. I'VE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE UNTIL NOW. ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO I THOUGHT SOMEONE WAS STEALING GAS OUT OF MY VEHICLE, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE IT'S KEPT BEHIND A LOCKED FENCE . SATURDAY JULY 13TH I HAD TO FILL UP BECAUSE OF A STORM. WHEN I GAS FINISHED FUELING IT SHOWED THAT I HAD AN EMPTY TANK. I KNEW THAT WAS WRONG SO I DECIDED TO GIVE NISSAN A CALL AT 1-800-647-7261. I SPOKE TO AN AGENT AND TOLD HIM MY PROBLEM, HE GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER AND TOLD ME TO CALL THE NEAREST NISSAN DEALERSHIP CLOSEST TO ME . I CALLED THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY SERVICES I HAD DONE TO MY VEHICLE. . I DON'T AGREE . THERE ARE MULTIPLE PEOPLE WITH THE SAME VEHICLE AS MYSELF AND I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM . IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME , PLEASE FEEL FREE TO HELP. WHILE DRIVING THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH, 2019, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I PULLED OVER IN A NEARBY PARKING LOT AS SOON AS I COULD. AT THIS POINT, I NOTICED THAT MY FUEL GAUGE HAD DROPPED FROM 1/4 TANK DOWN TO EMPTY. I USED AN ODB2 SCANNER TO CHECK MY ERROR CODES, AND FOUND AN ERROR CODE P0463 (FUEL TANK LEVEL SENSOR - VOLTAGE HIGH). I IMMEDIATELY PROCEEDED TO A GAS STATION, REFUELED, AND CLEARED THE ENGINE CODE TO SEE IF IT WOULD REAPPEAR. IT HAS NOT SINCE REAPPEARED. AFTER SOME RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR 2008 NISSAN PATHFINDERS, AND THAT THERE IS A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH THE ISSUE. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID IS 10V075000. I CALLED NISSAN'S PUBLIC NUMBER AND A LOCAL DEALERSHIP OWNED SERVICE CENTER. NEITHER FOUND ANY ACTIVE RECALLS REGARDING MY VEHICLE, AND NEITHER KNEW WHAT A NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS. I ASKED TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER OF THE SERVICE CENTER. I LEFT A VOICE MAIL FOR THEM THURSDAY AFTERNOON, BUT HAVE NOT HEARD BACK. BASED ON THE SYMPTOMS MY VEHICLE IS EXPERIENCING, I BELIEVE MY VEHICLE IS LIKELY SUFFERING FROM THE SAME ISSUE AS DESCRIBED IN THE AFOREMENTIONED NHTSA CAMPAIGN, AND THAT MY VEHICLE, AND LIKELY OTHERS, WERE MISSED IN THE RECALL.

THE DASHBOARD FUEL GUAGE DOES NOT RELIABLY REPORT THE LEVEL OF FUEL. THIS ISSUE LED TO A RECALL FOR 2008 PATHFINDERS IN THE PAST, BUT APPARENTLY NOT FOR MY VIN. THE ISSUE OCCURS AT VARIOUS TIMES, INCLUDING WHEN STATIONARY OR MOVING. SOMETIMES REFILLING THE TANK WILL GIVE A FULL TANK READING, SOME TIMES IT WILL NOT. IT WILL ALSO ALLOW THE TANK TO RUN DOWN TO EMPTY WITHOUT REFLECTING THAT ON THE GUAGE. OFTEN, BUT NOT ALWAYS, THE YELLOW SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE AS A RESULT.
THE PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE (I THINK THAT'S WHAT IT'S CALLED) HAD TO BE REPLACED. IT COST ME $350 BUT I DIDN'T KEEP A RECEIPT. AN INDIVIDUAL THAT HAD A SHOP DID THE REPAIR BUT HAS SINCE MOVED AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE. I WAS UNABLE TO PUT MORE THAN A FEW GALLONS OF GAS WHEN PUMPING GAS BEFORE IT WOULD CUT OFF. I WOULD WAIT A FEW MINUTES AND PUMP A FEW MORE GALLONS AND IT WOULD CUT OFF AGAIN. I HAD IT REPLACED LAST YEAR BUT I DON'T REMEMBER THE MILEAGE.

IF ACCURATE FUEL READING WAS CONCERN ENOUGH FOR RECALL 10V075000, HOW DO AN ADDITIONAL 43-54 COMPLAINTS NOT CAUSE ADDITIONAL VEHICLES TO BE INCLUDED. THIS HAPPENS RANDOMLY WHILE STATIONARY, WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREET AND HIGHWAY. FLUCTUATES IN THE MIDDLE OF A TRIP, ETC.

I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS MY FUEL LEVEL SENSOR THAT NEEDED REPLACED, NISSAN NORTH AMERICA INFORMS ME MY VIN ISN'T COVERED IN THE NHTSA REFERENCE #10V075000 RECALL OF THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR THAT BEGAN MARCH 2010, I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE USED AFTER THE RECALL WAS INITIATED. DUE TO THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR NEEDING REPLACED ($600), I WAS NOT ABLE TO PASS MY EMISSIONS TEST IN CO ($25), AND AM NOT ABLE TO REGISTER MY VEHICLE ($200). SO IF I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY OWN REPAIRS I WILL HAVE TO REPLACE A PART THAT NISSAN IS AWARE HAS AN ISSUE, GET A SECOND EMISSIONS TEST AND PAY ANY LATE FEES ON TOP OF MY ANNUAL REGISTRATION FEE. GOT 4 MECHANICS AND THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO CHECK ALL THIS OUT AND THEY ALL CONCLUDED THE COOLANT OVERFLOW TANK WAS FILTHY, STINKS- NOT THE SWEET SMELL- SMELLED BURNT AND RUSTY. UPON FURTHER DIAGNOSIS, THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY WAS RECALLED. WHEN THE SELLING DEALER WAS NOTIFIED THEY SAID THE RECALL DATE HAD EXPIRED AS OF LAST NOVEMBER AND WAS NOT COVERED. THE COST TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY WAS MORE THAN $970. WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL BUT WERE NOT. I THINK THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT THIS IS NOT A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ITEM. THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THESE SENSORS (80,000 RECALLS?) I DID NOT HAVE THE ADDITIONAL MONEY TO PERFORM THIS SERVICE. ON 11/19/2012, I DISCOVERED THAT NHTSA HAD HAD ISSUED A SAFETY RECALL, CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V075000 FOR THE 2008 NISSAN PATHFINDER AND INDICATED THAT THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS TO BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. THE DATE OF THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN WAS MARCH 2010. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED. ADDITIONALLY, I ALWAYS TAKE MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE, SO THEY MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES TO TO ADVISE ME OF THIS PROBLEM AND PERFORM THE NECESSARY FIX. I COUNTERED WITH THE STATEMENT THAT FIRSTLY, IT WAS A NHTSA RECALL, SECONDLY, THAT I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED, AND THIRDLY, HAD I HAD BEEN PROPERLY NOTIFIED IN MARCH 2010, I WOULD HAVE STILL BEEN WITHIN WARRANTY COVERAGE, ALTHOUGH AS A SAFETY RECALL THE SERVICE SHOULD BE PERFORMED FOR FREE. FROM THE NHTSA NOTICE IT APPEARS OVER 80,000 VEHICLES WERE SOLD WHICH WOULD HAVE THIS PROBLEM. APPROXIMATELY 2 MO AGO, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A FAILURE WITHIN THE FUEL SYSTEM. HE SAID I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM WHICH WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $800 FOR THE PART AND LABOR. HE LOOKED FURTHER INTO THE ISSUE SINCE I TOLD HIM THAT I DON'T ACTUALLY NOTICE A PROBLEM WITH MY FUEL GAUGE. I ALSO DID SOME RESEARCH ON MY OWN AND HAVE DISCOVERED, LIKE HIM, THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AS ME. SOME PEOPLE ACTUALLY DO HAVE ERRORS WITH THEIR FUEL GAUGE AND OTHER DON'T, HOWEVER THE RESULTING ISSUE HAS TO DO WITH A MALFUNCTION OF THE FUEL SYSTEM WHICH IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. NISSAN IS WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND THERE IS A RECALL FOR CERTAIN 2006 AND 2008 XTERRA AND PATHFINDER VEHICLES. WHEN I CONTACTED THE NISSAN #800, I WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR ANY RECALLS---IN SPITE OF THE COMPANY KNOWING ABOUT THE ISSUE, ISSUING A RECALL FOR THE ISSUE ON THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL OF MY VEHICLE AND MY EXPERIENCING THAT EXACT ISSUE. MY FAMILY HAS BEEN HIT VERY HARD BY THIS ECONOMY LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. THE MOLDED FUEL TANK SHELLS CAN DEFORM, CAUSING THE FUEL SENDER FLOAT ARM TO CONTACT AN EMBOSSMENT MOLDED INTO THE TANK SHELL CAUSING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FUEL GAUGE TO SHOW THAT THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY ONE QUARTER TANK WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS EMPTY. I HAVE STALLED IN TRAFFIC THREE TIMES . THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL CONTROL OF POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES AND CEASES TO MOVE SUDDENLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MYSELF AND OTHER MOTOR VEHICLES. I HAVE RESEARCHES THIS COMMON PROBLEM WITH NISSAN AND FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE. INCIDENT OUTLINE: I WAS DRIVING ON THE 2 LANE PORTION OF THE TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY #1 WEST OF CHILLIWACK AND HAD FUELED UP ABOUT TWO HOURS EARLIER. I WATCHED THE FUEL GAUGE, MPG AND DTE READINGS TO ROUGHLY ESTIMATE THE AMOUNT OF FUEL REMAINING AND THE RANGE TO BE EXPECTED FROM THE REMAINING FUEL, WHEN THE GAUGES WERE ACTUALLY WORKING FOR A BRIEF TIME. THE FUEL GAUGE HAD SEEMINGLY PROPERLY SHOWN THE DTE AND FUEL LEVEL BUT AT +/- 5/8 OF A TANK IT DROPPED TO ZERO AND THE DTE READINGS WENT FLAT LINE. I QUICKLY ASSESSED THE OPTIONS, PUT MY RIGHT HAND TURN SIGNAL ON AND STARTING EASING INTO THE CURB LANE DISPLACING THE VEHICLE BESIDE ME. I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE TRUCK INTO THE CURB LANE UNDER THE MOMENTUM IT HAD WITHOUT INCIDENT BUT NOT WITHOUT TREMENDOUS STRESS AND 2 NEAR MISSES WITH OTHER VEHICLES. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM NISSAN FOR MY 2008 PATHFINDER DUE TO A FAULTY FUEL GAUGE. ON SATURDAY 5/1/2010, I PRESENTED THE VEHICLE TO MAROONE NISSAN IN KENDALL FOR REPAIRS. AFTER 2 HOURS, THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO ME WITH A RECEIPT INDICATING THAT THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. THERE WAS A STRONG GAS ODOR WHEN I STARTED THE CAR. I ASSUMED THAT THIS WAS PROBABLY NATURAL SINCE THE REPAIRS WERE RELATED TO THE FUEL SYSTEM. HOWEVER, LATER THAT DAY, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THIS WAS THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME THAT THIS LIGHT CAME ON SINCE I ACQUIRED THE VEHICLE IN APRIL 2008. I DECIDED THAT ON MONDAY MORNING I WILL RETURN THE VEHICLE TO NISSAN. HOWEVER, ON SUNDAY AROUND MIDDAY, MY SON TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE SERVICE STATION TO PURCHASE GAS. THE NEXT EVENT THAT HAPPENED WAS ALARMING. ALL THE GAS THAT MY SON ADDED TO THE VEHICLE LEAKED OUT ON THE GROUND. APPARENTLY, THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN SOMEHOW MANAGED TO CREATE A HOLE SOMEWHERE IN THE FUEL SYSTEM/GAS TANK. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO NISSAN FOR REPAIRS AND THE REPAIRS ARE EXPECTED TO OCCUR ON MONDAY 5/3/2010. THIS SITUATION COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR EVEN DEATH TO MY SON. I DO NOT KNOW WHETHER THE INDIVIDUAL WHO PERFORMED THE REPAIRS WAS A NISSAN TRAINED AND CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN OR NOT. HOWEVER, IT IS WORTHY OF NOTE THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS DEFICIENCY IN EXISTENCE AT THE NISSAN LOCATION.
